This study was conducted to propose an accurate measurement method of charred thickness in structural glued laminated timber (glulam) exposed to standardized fire temperature conditions for evaluation of the fire resistance of Japanese larch (Larix kaempferi) structural glulam. The compressive strength of the test piece collected from the structural glulam exposed to the standardized fire temperature for two hours was analyzed. The results showed that there was residual strength of 14% in the boundary area between sound and charred part. Therefore, the thickness of charred part should be calculated as approximately 4.5 mm less than what is measured visually. The cell wall thickness between sound-, boundary-, and charred-part exposed to high temperature was observed under a microscope. Higher temperature resulted in a thinner tracheid cell wall, and the radial tissue was broken down. The transformation of the boundary part of these microstructures progressed gradually until full carbonization of wood occurred. Based on compressive strength tests and microscopic observation in the boundary part of specimens exposed to high temperature, the current visual assessment of charred thickness measurement is safe in terms of structural aspect but not efficient in terms of wood utilization point of view due to exception of load carrying area of the member.

Compared to steel and concrete, wood offers a fully renewable construction material with lesser carbon footprint and high strength-to-weight ratio. However, this material has become relatively unknown and ignored in the civil engineering community apart from cosmetic purpose. This study intends to provide insight on the design of a timber bridge for road traffic and presents the results of a series of full-scale laboratory test and monitoring performed conducted on Hanareum bridge, the first timber bridge for road traffic constructed in Korea. The arched truss bridge is made of glulam and spans over 30 m with two traffic lanes for a width of 8.4 m. The laboratory test considered tensile, compressive as well as bending tests on full-scale members, connections and the entire superstructure. Truck load testing involved both static and dynamic loading from which the dynamic properties and behavior of the bridge could be assessed. Finally, regular monitoring enabled to observe eventual seasonal variation of wood. The analysis of the results show that the structure continues to behave elastically as desired, that the maximum deflection at mid-span reaches merely 24% of the allowable deflection, and that the stress level remains far below the allowances even after 6 years of operation.

Depolarized fields inside a magnetodielectric sample interfere with the accurate measurement of sample characteristics in a cavity perturbation method. These depolarized fields occur due to the polarization of the test sample, depending on the volume and shape of the sample, in the electromagnetic field. To characterize the magnetodielectric sample more accurately, we proposed an advanced rectangular cavity (RC) perturbation method. In this method, we investigated the change in the resonant frequency and $Q$ -factor of a cavity which depends on the volume, and shape of the sample, and depolarized fields within the sample. The depolarizing factor for calculating the permittivity and permeability of the sample is derived by separating the uniform and depolarized fields within the sample when the sample is inserted in the cavity. These separations of fields play an important role to improve the measurement accuracy. The proposed unified RC perturbation technique is validated initially by measuring the resonant frequency and quality factor and then calculating the complex permittivity and permeability at the TE $_{10l}$ mode. The standard dielectric material (Al2O3) and magnetic material (YIG) samples are measured with the vector network analyzer. The measurement was performed when the magnetodielectric sample having various shapes and volumes inserted into the RC resonator. In comparison with the previous cavity perturbation methods, the permittivity and permeability have been calculated more accurately with various shapes of the test sample, and we also found that the ratio of the maximum sample volume to the cavity for various samples increases about 40%. Based on the proposed method, for a cube-shaped sample, we obtained the complex permittivity and permeability consecutively at each resonance mode without any physical relocation of the test sample. Therefore, the test sample is capable of continuous more accurate and more effective measurement in the desired frequency band without relocation using the proposed technique.

The signal processing technologies of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) have been vastly studied as diverse measurement modes for various applications. One of the technologies is Video-SAR (ViSAR). It is a land-imaging mode where a sequence of images is continuously formed on the spotlight mode. We propose a new signal processing method to generate the multi-frames of ViSAR using Doppler shifting technique via sub-aperture processing. The method is based on our designed wide-angle antenna, which is a corrugated horn shape with low side lobe and Gaussian beam pattern. This wide-angle antenna receives a wide Doppler band along the azimuth direction. Based on the characteristics of the antenna, we separate the wide Doppler band into each chirp pulse signal. Each of these separated signals has a different center time. Through each chirp pulse signal in Doppler domain, the proposed method generates each frame of video at a high frame rate. The proposed ViSAR processing can show high efficiency with low computation and without a fixed coordinate system. Moreover, it can also visualize a wider area on stripmap mode than the conventional ViSAR mode, and can derive the video results based on Range Doppler Algorithm (RDA). These advantages can lead to reduce economic costs and simplify the operating ViSAR system. We have performed the practical experiments using X-band chirp pulse SAR system mounted on an airplane to verify the proposed method.

This paper introduces a sparse scene reconstruction algorithm for automobile frequency-modulated continuous-wave synthetic aperture radar (FMCW SAR) through scaled compressed sensing (CS). An FMCW radar leads to low manufacturing cost, compact realization, and low transmission power. An automobile SAR is more economical and easier to implement than typical SAR platforms (e.g., satellites and aircraft). We apply CS to randomly subsampled raw data of automobile FMCW SAR for sparse reconstruction. We exploit the fact that the velocity of an automobile is significantly lower than that of the SAR platforms, which leads to a vastly narrow bandwidth of an azimuth-matched filter in the azimuth compression of the range-Doppler algorithm (RDA). Low-frequency azimuth data have a fundamental effect on azimuth compression. We propose a new reconstruction scheme, scaled CS, which specializes in low-frequency information recovery for automobile SAR. The scheme is based on basis pursuit denoising (BPDN). A Ku-band FMCW SAR system is developed to verify the performance of the proposed algorithm. We mount our system on an automobile and collect FMCW SAR raw data in the stripmap mode with a van maintained a constant speed on a highway. The proposed reconstruction algorithm shows improved recovery performance for automobile FMCW SAR, which is validated by processing a high-resolution real SAR image.

This paper proposes a modified stripmap synthetic aperture radar (SAR) signal processing algorithm with an X-band SAR system, using the practical measurement results of automobile-based SAR (Auto-SAR). The quality of the image is degraded due to an unexpected direction change or anisotropy of the target position in radar image measurement. To solve the quality problem, signal processing is required for the vector velocity of each range in the azimuth direction. An X-band chirp pulse system was implemented and optimized by a signal processing algorithm suitable for high resolution. The stripmap SAR images are produced in five places. The validity of the proposed algorithm is verified by comparing impulse response function analysis and experimental images.

A cross-laminated timber (CLT) wall plays the role of resisting shear stress induced by lateral forces as well as vertical load. Due to the press size, CLT panels have a limitation in size. To minimize the initial investment, some glulam manufactures wanted to make a shear wall element with small-size CLT panels and panel-to-panel connections and wanted to know whether the shear wall would have equivalent shear performance with the wall made of a single CLT panel. In this study, this was investigated by experiments and kinematic model analysis. Two shear walls made of small CLT panels were tested. The model showed a good agreement with test results in the envelope curve. Even though the shear walls were made of small panels, the global peak load did not decrease significantly compared with the wall made of a single CLT panel, but the global displacement showed a large increase. From this analysis, it was concluded that the shear wall can be designed with small CLT panels, but displacement should be designed carefully.

This study is aiming at the simulation of wood compression (C) at a macroscopic level by means of a three-dimensional finite element analysis (3D-FEA) of solid wood and evaluation of the capability and limitations of this approach. C-Tests were carried out on Douglas fir according to ASTM D 143. The specimens included the 25×25×100 mm3 cuboid bars for longitudinal (L), radial (R) and tangential (T) directions and the conventional 50×50×150 mm3 blocks for the perpendicular to grain (⊥) direction. Two sets of wood parameters were developed and the 3D-FEA was implemented for the two types of specimens. The 3D-FEA worked successfully provided that the stress state coming from the total wood C was uniform. However, in case of the dominance of local compressive behaviour such as bearing, crushing and fibre shear, a microscopic-level modelling technique is needed for correction of the material parameters. More details on the limitations and difficulties of 3D-FE implementation for wood were discussed.

KS F 3020-침엽수구조용재 기준에 따라 국산 소나무(Pinus densiflora) 38 × 140 × 3600 mm 구조용 제재목 365개에 대하여 기계등급구분을 실시하고, 휨허용응력을 산출하여 현재 적용되는 KS기준허용응력과 비교 분석하였다. 휨허 용응력 계산을 위하여 5% 휨강도 하한값을 75% 신뢰수준의 비모수적 방법, 2-parameter 그리고 3-parameter Weibull 분포를 가정한 모수적 방법, 휨강도-휨탄성계수 직선회귀 방법, 총 4가지 분석방법을 사용하여 결정하였다. 기계등급 E8, E9, E10 만이 비모수적 방법의 통계 처리가 가능한 자료 수를 얻었으며, 휨강도-휨탄성계수 직선회귀 방법은 이론적으로 모든 등급에 대한 5% 하한값 결정이 가능함을 보여주었다. 결정된 등급별 휨허용응력은 기준허용응력에 비하여 모두 낮은 값을 나타내었으며 이것은 과소설계의 위험성이 있는 것으로 현행 기계등급구분체계의 문제점으로 파악되었다. 이러한 문제는 구조설계 신뢰성과 관련하여 반드시 개선되어야 할 것으로, 휨강도-휨탄성계수 조합 등급 도입이 필요할 것으로 생각되었다.

국내외 기계등급제재목(구조재 및 층재)의 등급기준 및 설계강도 산출방법을 비교 분석하고 국내 제재산업 실정을 고려한 평균 탄성계수(modulus of elasticity, 이하 MOE) 기준방법 적용을 제안하였다. 먼저 올바른 기계등급제재목 기준 정착을 위해 기계등급구조재와 기계등급층재의 공통점과 차이점을 설명하였다. 최소 고정 MOE 기준 등급을 사용하는 국내 기준은 등급구분에는 편리하나 휨강도(modulus of rupture, 이하 MOR) 예측과 자원이용도 측면에서는 효율성이 낮은 것으로 파악되었다. 해외에서 사용되는 평균 MOE 기준 방법은 초기 컴퓨터 기반 작동을 요구하나 MOR-MOE 직선회귀에 근거한 합리적인 MOR 예측과 품질관리 측면에서 효율성이 높은 것으로 분석되었다. 무엇보다도 현 국내 기계등급구조재 등급체계는 수종별 강도 특성을 반영하지 못하고 있다는 것이 가장 큰 문제점으로 분석되었으며 이러한 결과를 기반으로 MOR-MOE 직선회귀분석에 근거한 기계등급제재목 등급기준 및 기준설계값 산출방법 적용을 제안하였다. 이를 통하여 궁극적으로 부가가치가 높은 국산 기계등급구조재 생산 활성화를 이루고, 기계등급구조재의 층재 전용 가능에 따른 구조용 집성재 가격경쟁력 제고 효과를 얻을 수 있다고 사료되었다.

Heart rots severely degrade tree’s log quality. This study presents a development of stress wave indices which could be helpful for the detection of heart rots in trees with commercial stress wave CT equipment. To determine an accurate index telling sound or decayed wood, two tests were carried out. First, Dissimilarity Index (DI), based on difference in stress wave velocity between the measurements and the reference value on sound wood, was calculated with consideration of difference in velocity according to transducers’ angles. Second, average difference in velocity (ADV) between inner and outer zones of a cross section was calculated. For these two indices, the best method and threshold were determined. The ADV index could distinguish sound and heart-rot discs with high accuracy (89.5–94.7 %). DI did not show satisfactory accuracy in determining the presence of heart rots (63.6 %), but it showed a good feasibility of predicting the size of heart rot. The developed indices were expected to be able to be used as a decision-making criterion for heart-rot detection and a predictor of its sizes in teak trees while using stress wave CT equipment.

To evaluate moisture content in wood, the dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) method is presented in this paper. A digital detector was used to improve the accuracy of evaluation of moisture content, which reduced the error from the process of developing X-ray films and directly measured the quantity of transmitted X-ray energies. The theoretical equation of DXA method was developed using a relationship between the ratio of two reference X-ray energies (45 and 60 kV), which are referred to as k value, and the moisture content. From the theoretical result, a regression equation was derived to estimate moisture content of wood. The moisture contents were successfully estimated by the equation when the results were compared to experimentally measured moisture contents with root-mean-square error of prediction of 3.15 % in the 28.68–172.81 % moisture content range.

Insect damage is one of the most serious problems in conservation of wooden cultural heritage buildings. Because this damage is quite small in a cross section, it is difficult to detect by conventional ultrasonic techniques. In the previous study, ultrasonic attenuation spectroscopy showed a feasibility to detect this small defect. But to apply this method to real inspection, the robustness needs to be improved. For improving the robustness, this study focused on inconsistency of ultrasonic spectrum measurement. To minimize the inconsistency, Spectra-averaging pretreatment was attempted. Even though this pretreatment would provide the better robustness, it can also make a negative effect on the accuracy in the detection of small damage. Therefore, the influence of the pretreatment on the prediction was investigated in this study. By ultrasonic attenuation spectroscopy, the number of drill hole was predicted. When comparing the accuracy in prediction using the pretreated spectra from the prediction without the pretreatment, the accuracy was not lower than that without the pretreatment or the previous study. Therefore, it was concluded that the Spectra-averaging pretreatment does not make a negative effect on the prediction.

A simplified material model, which was efficiently implemented in a three-dimensional finite solid element (3D FE) analysis for wood was developed. The bi-linear elasto-plastic anisotropic material theory was adopted to describe con- stitutive relations of wood in three major directions including longitudinal, radial and tangential direction. The assump- tion of transverse isotropy was made to reduce the requisite 27 material constants to 6 independent constants including elastic moduli, yield stresses and Poisson's ratios in the parallel, and perpendicular to grain directions. The results of Douglas fir compression tests in the three directions were compared to the 3D FE simulation incorporated with the wood material model developed in this study. Successful agreements of the results were found in the load-deformation

A portable X-ray apparatus generates soft X-rays which have a continuous wavelength (wide range). When using continuous wavelength X-rays, the mass attenuation coefficient of the soft X-rays is changed as the penetrating depth in wood increases, unlike monochromatic X-rays which are usually used for medical purposes. In safety inspections of historic buildings, penetrating depth varies in an X-ray radiograph. Computerized tomography (CT) is a powerful tool that helps determine the density information of the inner sections of buildings. Because only portable X-rays can be used in historic buildings and the penetrating depth can vary, the mass attenuation coefficient of wood according to penetrating depth needs to be investigated. Therefore, in this study, we developed a statistical method which takes into account the influence of the penetrating depth on a density calculation made by a portable X-ray apparatus. X-ray tests were conducted on wood specimens of various depths. From the results, a statically determined mass attenuation coefficient (SMAC) ( $$ \mu = - 0.214\ln (t) + 0.7251 $$ ), which is the equation of mass attenuation coefficient according to the penetrating depth in wood, was derived to convert radiographs to density radiographs. All projections were converted into density profiles using two methods, average mass attenuation coefficient and SMAC. Based on the density profile for each projection, a density distribution of a cross-section was reconstructed by filtered back projection. Compared with the cases using a consistent mass attenuation coefficient, SMAC provided much higher precision in density prediction than the average mass attenuation coefficient.

X-ray computed tomography is a very powerful nondestructive technique in safety inspection of historic timber building. But, in field, various testing condition makes it difficult to carry out X-ray CT testing. Limited size in X-ray digital detector is one of the problems. In this study, a pitch pine disk with two holes was used to know how imperfection in X-ray projection affects CT image resolution. Using various number of projections, CT image was reconstructed by filtered back projection method, and then it was investigated how many projection is required to identify the holes in different location. Two artificial holes could be differently detected according to their location in cross section of specimen. One hole in center part of specimen was identified using more than 9 radiographs, but the other one which located in outer part of cross section could not be detected until more than 36 projections were used. Even though there is data missing in outer part of cross section due to limited size of detector, the center part of CT image could be reconstructed well and the resolution of outer part became higher with increase of the number of projections. For field application, the number of projections for CT image reconstruction needs to be decided with consideration of another nondestructive testing and the location of interest.

The purpose of this research was development of quantitative ultrasonic test methodology for detecting internal defects in members of ancient wooden building. Connection part between wooden members and/or contacted or hidden part by wall of ceiling or other construction materials make it hard to apply direct way of ultrasonic test. So indirect way of ultrasonic test needed to be applied. Test methodology with newly developed prototype of ultrasonic system was proposed. Homogeneous material with polypropylene was also tested for establishing the criterion. Results showed that TOF(time of flight)-energy and pulse length were found out to be proper ultrasonic parameters for predicting depth of defect in wood different from polypropylene. It was not possible to directly apply prediction equation derived from polypropylene. Newly established prediction equation shows coefficient of determination of 0.73 for wood. Finally, defect of replaced rafter members was predicted with the coefficient of determination of 0.32. Various aspects of ultrasound propagation in wood including anisotropy need to be carefully considered to raise up the prediction accuracy.

In Korea, there has been a traditional post and beam wood construction with large roof load. Because a large friction is generated in wooden joint or members, it is important to evaluate the friction between wood members according to wood direction. Because most of studies have been concerned with friction between wood and steel, excluding effect of real area of contact, there are a few studies on the friction between wood members. The object of this study was to evaluate friction or coefficient of friction accord- ing to normal force and real area of contact of wood. With Japanese larch (Larix kaempferi) test speci- mens, five steps of normal force and combinations of test were prepared. Results indicated that normal force had almost no affection on the friction, however there was difference about friction or coefficient of friction according to real contact conditions of wood grain and contact area.

TiO2/carbon nanotubes (CNTs) composite nanofibers were prepared by sol-gel processing followed by electrospinning technique. Phase pure titania/CNT nanofiber of 100–150 nm diameters were obtained by high temperature calcinations of the inorganic organic composite fibers. The inclusion of nanotubes with TiO2 was confirmed by FT-IR and Raman spectra and corresponding morphology and crystallinity were observed by SEM, TEM, and XRD analysis.

Metal–ceramic nanocomposites have a special interest for biomedical applications such as in dental and bone implants. One interesting possibility to control the size of these materials is their fabrication on electrospun nanofibers. In this communication, we reported the use of bio-activated titanium oxide electrospun nanofibers as a template for the synthesis of hydroxyapatite (HAp) [Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2] crystals. Titanium oxide (TiO2) nanofibers were fabricated using a viscous solution of titanium isopropoxide (TiP)/poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) via electrospinning and then chemically treated with NaOH followed by diluted HCl to explore the possibility of enhancing the bioactivity. Thus obtained nanofibers were employed for the simulated body fluid (SBF) mediated biomimatic synthesis of HAp crystals. The composites were characterized by different physico-chemical (FT-IR, XPS, XRD, SEM, and EDX) techniques. Results showed that the activated TiO2 nanofibers served as an effective template for the assembly of plate like hydroxyapatite crystals.

This work reports the electrolyte induced aggregation of gold nanoparticles directly conjugated to amino acid by chemical reduction in aqueous solution. The study was focused on three different classes of amino acids depending on the nature of alpha substituent, viz. l-cysteine, l-leucine, and l-asparagine. The band broadening and the red shift of surface plasmon band with increase in flocculation parameter showed the aggregation of gold nanoparticles with increase in electrolyte concentration and decrease in pH as monitored by UV-visible spectrophotometer. The (1)H NMR spectrum demonstrates that the sulfide bond of cysteine and alpha amino group of leucine and asparagine interact with nanoparticles surface. Furthermore, transmission electron microscope (TEM) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) were performed to characterize and to support the fate of stabilization of the gold nanoparticles by amino acid.

The synthesis of titanium dioxide nanofibers with 200–300 nm diameter was presented. The new inorganic-organic hybrid nanofibers were prepared by sol-gel processing and electrospinning technique using a viscous solution of titanium isopropoxide (TiP)/poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc). Pure titanium dioxide nanofibers were obtained by high temperature calcination of the inorganic-organic composite fibers. SEM, FT-IR, and WAXD techniques were employed to characterize these nanofibers. The titanium dioxide nanostructured fibers have rougher surface and smaller diameter compare with PVAc/TiP composite nanofibers. The anatase to rutile phase transformation occurred when the calcination temperature was increased from 600 °C to 1000 °C.

In this paper we develop nonparametric methods for regression analysis when the response variable is subject to censoring and/or truncation. The development is based on a data completion princple that enables us to apply, via an iterative scheme, nonparametric regression techniques to iteratively com¬pleted data from a given sample with censored and/or truncated observations. In particular, locally weighted regression smoothers and additive regression models are extended to left-truncated and right-censored data Nonparamet¬ric regression analysis is applied to the Stanford heart transplant data, which have been analyzed by previous authors using semiparametric regression meth¬ods. and provides new insights into the relationship between expected survival time after a heart transplant and explanatory variables.

Differential interference contrast microscopy is designed to image unstained and transparent specimens by enhancing the contrast resulting from the Nomarski prism-effected optical path difference. Retinitis pigmentosa, one of the most common inherited retinal diseases, is characterized by progressive loss of photoreceptors. In this study, Differential interference contrast microscopy was evaluated as a new and simple application for observation of the retinal photoreceptor layer and retinitis pigmentosa diagnostics and monitoring. Retinal tissues of Royal College of Surgeons rats and retinal-degeneration mice, both well-established animal models for the disease, were prepared as flatmounts and histological sections representing different elapsed times since the occurrence of the disease. Under the microscopy, the retinal flatmounts showed that the mosaic pattern of the photoreceptor layer was irregular and partly collapsed at the early stage of retinitis pigmentosa, and, by the advanced stage, amorphous. The histological sections, similarly, showed thinning of the photoreceptor layer at the early stage and loss of the outer nuclear layer by the advanced stage. To count and compare the number of photoreceptors in the normal and early-retinitis pigmentosa-stage tissues, an automated cell-counting program designed with MATLAB, a numerical computing language, using a morphological reconstruction method, was applied to the differential interference contrast microscopic images. The number of cells significantly decreased, on average, from 282 to 143 cells for the Royal College of Surgeons rats and from 255 to 170 for the retinal-degeneration mouse. We successfully demonstrated the potential of the differential interference contrast microscopy technique's application to the diagnosis and monitoring of RP.

The aim of this study was to check the load resistance factored design (LRFD) codes for Korean softwood species. Three representative structural timber Lazix Kaempferi, Pinus koraiensis, and Pinus densiflora, in the northeastern South Korea were selected. For evaluating the bending strength, a full-sized specimen was used. In the test results, it seemed that the KFRI grading rule was suitable for grading the three species due to the high percentage of grade 1 or 2. However, in terms of modulus of rupture, the grading rule had a problem due to the large coefficient of variation in the grade class. Moreover, in case of Pinus densiflora, it is difficult to use LRFD design values by format conversion since the reference resistance values were much lower than the values. For greater reliability, the accumulation of additional data is necessary and further studies should be performed.

Portable ultrasonic system which is named KCT-200 was developed to detect deterioration in dismantled historical wooden member in Korea. For investigating inner state of wood, an experimental study was done with sound wood. It was confirmed that velocity to find deterioration in wood was 1200 m/s from experimental study. And that result could be used to detect inner state of dismantled historical wooden member. The method to predict ration of sound wood to deteriorated wood was also suggested in this study.

In recent years, electrospinning has been arisen, because polymer fibers prepared by this technique are able to achieve fiber diameter in the range of nanometers to a few micrometers. Generally, electrospun web is of white color and without any pattern. The preparation of the patterned web seems to occur as using patterned and/or decorative collector in electrospinning. It is found that electrospinning can directly prepare the patterned web with light and shade. To induce electrospun web with a unique patterned, shape, the basic principle is to make use of the electric potential difference of a collector surface. Various patterns at electrospun web were successfully prepared as using the patterned collector and imaged with a scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and an automatic force microscopy (AFM). As the results of analysis of those SEM and AFM, the patterned web has different morphology due to induce the electric potential difference of a collector surface. AFM images revealed that much thinner fibers in higher electric potential regions are observed here in electrospinning for patterning than fibers formed from in lower electric potential regions. Finally, this study has opened the feasibility to form interesting electrospun web with a nice-looking decoration.

We know that the quantum system evolves to different physical phenomena according to initial states. However, the situation is very different in the open system. We consider the system and the environment governed by the Markovian process. The density matrix (the reduced density matrix) of the system satisfies the Kossakowski-Lindblad equation. We calculate the expectation value of the z-direction-magnetization in the system for various types of 1) initial states and 2) interactions between the system and the environment. In all the cases, the values of the magnetization approached asymptotically to the same point even though the different initial states and different interaction types between the system and the environment are applied. The paths to asymptotically approach the final values are different according to the initial states and the interactions. These facts show that the physical results of expectation value are independent of the initial states.
