Does the adoption of digital media platforms affect the success of environmental movements? We address this question by using a representative sample of environmental non-governmental organizations (ENGOs) from Hong Kong and examining the linkages between their digital media adoption and reach and their level of success. Guided by the agenda setting theory, we test whether the digital strategies are related to the shifts in the media and government agenda from 2007–2018. Our findings show that the adoption of digital media contributes to ENGOs’ own media visibility and specific issue salience in the news media agenda, and that the extent of digital reach of ENGOs is also associated with ENGOs’ visibility in the news media. Furthermore, although we find no direct relationships between the digital adoption and the government agenda, we argue that the legislative processes on biodiversity and green energy issues in Hong Kong suggest a pattern of mutually reinforcing interactions between the media agenda and the policy agenda. It is therefore likely that digital strategies contribute to policy changes indirectly, that is, by increasing issue salience in the local news media.

In order to explore the effect of okra powder on the rheological properties of wheat dough, the thermomechanical properties, alveograph characteristics, rheofermentation and dynamic rheological properties of the mixture flour dough (the addition amount of okra powder are 0, 1%, 3%, 5%, 7% and 9%) were measured by using Mixolab, Alveolab, Rheofermentometer, rheometer and other technical methods. The results showed that the wet gluten content of the mixture flour decreased by 79.96% under the incorporation of okra powder. Furthermore, with the increasing of okra powder addition, the dough water absorption ratio increased from 63.30% to 65.90%, the dough development time and stability decreased firstly and then increased, and the protein weakening was enhanced. The pasting peak viscosity and setback decreased while the cooking stability showed no change. Meanwhile, the tenacity, extensibility and fermentation performance of dough dropped, and the maximum fermentation height Hm value decreased by 39.80%. Different types of media use exert distinctive influences over political participation of various forms. Drawing on the O-S-R-O-R (Orientation-Stimulus-Reasoning- Orientation-Response) model of political communication effects, this study proposes a theoretical model to connect traditional news media use and online alternative media use to both institutional and noninstitutional forms of political participation. The framework integrates internal efficacy and political satisfaction as mediators to explain the indirect processes from media use to political participation. Findings from a survey of representative Hong Kong adults suggest that news media use and alternative media use can influence political participation in different ways. Specifically, traditional news media play the role of an efficacy facilitator to boost institutional and noninstitutional political participation, whereas online alternative media mainly serve as a political dissatisfaction amplifier to fuel citizens' noninstitutional political participation, such as protest participation. In this paper we report the development of a cost-effective, modular, open source, and fully automated slide-scanning microscope, composed entirely of easily available off-the-shelf parts, and capable of bright field and fluorescence modes. The automated X-Y stage is composed of two low-cost micrometer stages coupled to stepper motors operated in open-loop mode. The microscope is composed of a low-cost CMOS sensor and low-cost board lenses placed in a 4f configuration. The system has approximately 1 micron resolution, limited by the f/# of available board lenses. The microscope is compact, measuring just 25×25×30 cm, and has an absolute positioning accuracy of ±1 μm in the X and Y directions. A Z-stage enables autofocusing and imaging over large fields of view even on non-planar samples, and custom software enables automatic determination of sample boundaries and image mosaicking. We demonstrate the utility of our device through imaging of fluorescent- and transmission-dye stained blood and fecal smears containing human and animal parasites, as well as several prepared tissue samples. These results demonstrate image quality comparable to high-end commercial microscopes at a cost of less than US$400 for a bright-field system, with an extra US$100 needed for the fluorescence module.
