Achieving a narrow emission bandwidth is long pursued for display applications. Among all primary colors, obtaining pure red emission with high visual perception is the most challenging. In this work, CsPbI 3 halide perovskite nanoplatelets (NPLs) with rigorously controlled 2D  [PbI 6 ] 4- octahedron layer number (n) are demonstrated. A perovskite core-PbSO 4 shell structure is designed to prevent aggregation and fusion between NPLs, enabling consistent thickness and quantum confinement strength for each NPL. Consequently, exact n = 4 CsPbI 3  NPLs are demonstrated, exhibiting emission peaks around 630 nm, with very narrow spectral bandwidths of <24 nm and high absolute photoluminescence quantum yields up to 85%. The emission of n = 4 NPLs falls exactly within the pure-red region, closely aligning with the International Telecommunication Union Recommendation BT.2020  standard. Measurements suggest predominant stability and color homogeneity compared to traditional red-emitting CsPbI x Br 3- x nanocrystals. Finally, proof-of-concept pure-red emissive light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are demonstrated by integrating n = 4 CsPbI 3 NPLs films with a blue LED chip, showing an excellent external quantum efficiency of 18.3% and high brightness exceeding 3 × 10 6 nits. Several marine drugs exert anticancer effects by inducing oxidative stress, which becomes overloaded and kills cancer cells when redox homeostasis is imbalanced. The downregulation of antioxidant signaling induces oxidative stress, while its upregulation attenuates oxidative stress. Marine drugs have miRNA-modulating effects against cancer cells. However, the potential antioxidant targets of such drugs have been rarely explored. This review aims to categorize the marine-drug-modulated miRNAs that downregulate their antioxidant targets, causing oxidative stress in anticancer treatments. We also categorize the downregulation of oxidative-stress-inducing miRNAs in antioxidant protection among non-cancer cells. We summarize the putative antioxidant targets of miRNA-modulating marine drugs by introducing a bioinformatics tool (miRDB). Finally, the marine drugs affecting antioxidant targets are surveyed. Introduction: The 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were adopted by the United Nations in 2015, emphasizing the importance of achieving peace, prosperity, and well-being for all people. With the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, sustainable health has become an important issue. Teachers were forced to adopt distance teaching, necessitating rapid upgrading of their ICT skills and integration into e-learning, which caused tangible and intangible pressures on teachers and impacted their well-being. This study examined the effects of ICT competence on teachers' workplace anxiety, emotional exhaustion, and well-being during the pandemic from the perspective of Social Cognitive Theory (SCT)., Methods: A quantitative research methodology and a questionnaire survey with a total of 21 questions were used as the primary research design. The snowball method was employed as a sampling method for online questionnaires from September to October 2021. A total of 216 questionnaires were collected, of which four incomplete questionnaires were excluded, leaving 212 valid questionnaires, with a valid questionnaire recovery rate of 98.1%. The valid questionnaires were analyzed using Smart Pls 4.0 Partial Least Square Method Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM)., Results: The study found that teachers' ICT competence could significantly reduce emotional exhaustion and enhance teachers' well-being. However, there was no significant effect on workplace anxiety. Additionally, well-being was not directly affected by workplace anxiety, and teachers' well-being needs to be mediated by emotional exhaustion to be indirectly affected. Emotional exhaustion plays an important mediating role between teachers' ICT competence and workplace stress, both of which are important mediators of well-being., Discussion: From a practical point of view, to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2030, it is ideal to have good health and well-being for the whole person. Objective: Aortic dissection, a rare but serious condition, requires timely diagnosis and treatment., Case Report: A case report involving a 33-year-old female with Stanford type B aortic dissection at 32 + 3 weeks gestational age highlights the importance of being alert to the symptoms and signs of this condition, particularly in patients with hypertension or a history of connective tissue disorders. The case report suggests a delivery first strategy followed by TEVAR procedure as the preferred approach for managing aortic dissection in pregnancy. Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most common chronic liver disorder characterized by fat accumulation in the liver. This leads to aggravated hepatocyte inflammation due to impaired mitochondrial function, mitochondrial double-stranded RNA (mt-dsRNA) release, elevated oxidative stress, and reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. MicroRNA-29a (miR-29a) is used to reduce hepatic fibrosis in cases of cholestatic liver damage and lessen the severity of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis in animal studies by influencing mitochondrial protein balance. However, the effectiveness of miR-29a in diminishing mt-dsRNA-induced exacerbation of NAFLD remains poorly understood, particularly in the context of a Western diet (WD). Our results have found that mice with increased miR-29a levels and fed a WD showed notably decreased serum aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), total cholesterol, and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels. They also experienced less weight gain and lower final body and liver weights. In addition, overexpression of miR-29a reduced the severity of fibrosis, alleviated hepatic oxidative stress, misfolded protein aggregates, and the release of mt-dsRNA. Moreover, miR-29a attenuated the innate immune mitochondrial antiviral-signaling protein (MAVS) pathway response. In vitro, the research using HepG2 cells confirmed that miR-29a reduces MAVS expression and decreases the release of mt-dsRNA and superoxide initiated by palmitic acid (PA). Analysis of luciferase activity further established that the specific binding of miR-29a to the 3'UTR of MAVS led to a repression of its expression. Phthalates are widespread and commonly used plasticizers that lead to adverse health effects. Several natural products provide a protective effect against phthalates. Moreover, microRNAs (miRNAs) are regulated by natural products and phthalates. Therefore, miRNAs' impacts and potential targets may underlie the mechanism of phthalates. However, the relationship between phthalate-modulated miRNAs and phthalate protectors derived from natural products is poorly understood and requires further supporting information. In this paper, we review the adverse effects and potential targets of phthalates on reproductive systems as well as cancer and non-cancer responses. Information on natural products that attenuate the adverse effects of phthalates is retrieved through a search of Google Scholar and the miRDB database. Moreover, information on miRNAs that are upregulated or downregulated in response to phthalates is collected, along with their potential targets. The interplay between phthalate-modulated miRNAs and natural products is established. While the transcription factor GATA-3 is well-established for its crucial role in T cell development, its specific influence on invariant natural killer T (iNKT) cells remains relatively unexplored. Using flow cytometry and single-cell transcriptomic analysis, we demonstrated that GATA-3 deficiency in mice leads to the absence of iNKT2 and iNKT17 cell subsets, as well as an altered distribution of iNKT1 cells. Thymic iNKT cells lacking GATA-3 exhibited diminished expression of PLZF and T-bet, key transcription factors involved in iNKT cell differentiation, and reduced production of Th2, Th17, and cytotoxic effector molecules. Single-cell transcriptomics revealed a comprehensive absence of iNKT17 cells, a substantial reduction in iNKT2 cells, and an increase in iNKT1 cells in GATA-3-deficient thymi. Differential expression analysis highlighted the regulatory role of GATA-3 in T cell activation signaling and altered expression of genes critical for iNKT cell differentiation, such as Icos , Cd127 , Eomes , and Zbtb16 . Notably, restoration of Icos, but not Cd127, expression could rescue iNKT cell development in GATA-3-deficient mice. In conclusion, our study demonstrates the pivotal role of GATA-3 in orchestrating iNKT cell effector lineage differentiation through the regulation of T cell activation pathways and Icos expression, providing insights into the molecular mechanisms governing iNKT cell development and function.

Protein phosphatase 2A (PP2A), a heterotrimeric holoenzyme (scaffolding, catalytic, and regulatory subunits), regulates dephosphorylation for more than half of serine/threonine phosphosites and exhibits diverse cellular functions. Although several studies on natural products and miRNAs have emphasized their impacts on PP2A regulation, their connections lack systemic organization. Moreover, only part of the PP2A family has been investigated. This review focuses on the PP2A-modulating effects of natural products and miRNAs' interactions with potential PP2A targets in cancer and non-cancer cells. PP2A-modulating natural products and miRNAs were retrieved through a literature search. Utilizing the miRDB database, potential PP2A targets of these PP2A-modulating miRNAs for the whole set (17 members) of the PP2A family were retrieved. Finally, PP2A-modulating natural products and miRNAs were linked via a literature search. Ferroptosis, which comprises iron-dependent cell death, is crucial in cancer and non-cancer treatments. Exosomes, the extracellular vesicles, may deliver biomolecules to regulate disease progression. The interplay between ferroptosis and exosomes may modulate cancer development but is rarely investigated in natural product treatments and their modulating miRNAs. This review focuses on the ferroptosis-modulating effects of natural products and miRNAs concerning their participation in ferroptosis and exosome biogenesis (secretion and assembly)-related targets in cancer and non-cancer cells. Natural products and miRNAs with ferroptosis-modulating effects were retrieved and organized. Next, a literature search established the connection of a panel of ferroptosis-modulating genes to these ferroptosis-associated natural products. Moreover, ferroptosis-associated miRNAs were inputted into the miRNA database (miRDB) to bioinformatically search the potential targets for the modulation of ferroptosis and exosome biogenesis. Finally, the literature search provided a connection between ferroptosis-modulating miRNAs and natural products. Consequently, the connections from ferroptosis-miRNA-exosome biogenesis to natural product-based anticancer treatments are well-organized. This review sheds light on the research directions for integrating miRNAs and exosome biogenesis into the ferroptosis-modulating therapeutic effects of natural products on cancer and non-cancer diseases.

Octocoral of the genus Clavularia is a kind of marine invertebrate possessing abundant cytotoxic secondary metabolites, such as prostanoids and dolabellanes. In our continuous natural product study of C. spp., two previously undescribed prostanoids [clavulone I-15-one ( 1 ) and 12- O -deacetylclavulone I ( 2 )] and eleven known analogs ( 3 - 13 ) were identified. The structures of these new compounds were elucidated based on analysis of their 1D and 2D NMR, HRESIMS, and IR data. Additionally, all tested prostanoids ( 1 and 3 - 13 ) showed potent cytotoxic activities against the human oral cancer cell line (Ca9-22). The major compound 3 showed cytotoxic activity against the Ca9-22 cells with the IC 50 value of 2.11 ± 0.03 μg/mL, which echoes the cytotoxic effect of the coral extract. In addition, in silico tools were used to predict the possible effects of isolated compounds on human tumor cell lines and nitric oxide production, as well as the pharmacological potentials.

Highly emissive semiconductor nanocrystals, or so-called quantum dots (QDs) possess a variety of applications from displays and biology labeling, to quantum communication and modern security. Though ensembles of QDs have already shown very high photoluminescent quantum yields (PLQYs) and have been widely utilized in current optoelectronic products, QDs that exhibit high absorption cross-section, high emission intensity, and, most important, nonblinking behavior at single-dot level have long been desired and not yet realized at room temperature. In this work, infrared-emissive MAPbI 3 -based halide perovskite QDs is demonstrated. These QDs not only show a ≈100% PLQY at the ensemble level but also, surprisingly, at the single-dot level, display an extra-large absorption cross-section up to 1.80 × 10 -12 cm 2 and non-blinking single photon emission with a high single photon purity of 95.3%, a unique property that is extremely rare among all types of quantum emitters operated at room temperature. An in-depth analysis indicates that neither trion formation nor band-edge carrier trapping is observed in MAPbI 3 QDs, resulting in the suppression of intensity blinking and lifetime blinking. Fluence-dependent transient absorption measurements reveal that the coexistence of non-blinking behavior and high single photon purity in these perovskite QDs results from a significant repulsive exciton-exciton interaction, which suppresses the formation of biexciton, and thus greatly reduces photocharging. The robustness of these QDs is confirmed by their excellent stability under continuous 1 h electron irradiation in high-resolution transmission electron microscope inspection. Mechanochemical reactions achieved by processes such as milling and grinding are promising alternatives to traditional solution-based chemistry. This approach not only eliminates the need for large amounts of solvents, thereby reducing waste generation, but also finds applications in chemical and materials synthesis. The focus of this study is on the synthesis of quinazolinone derivatives by ball milling, in particular evodiamine and rutaecarpine analogues. These compounds are of interest due to their diverse bioactivities, including potential anticancer properties. The study examines the reactions carried out under ball milling conditions, emphasizing their efficiency in terms of shorter reaction times and reduced environmental impact compared to conventional methods. The ball milling reaction of evodiamine and rutaecarpine analogues resulted in yields of 63-78% and 22-61%, respectively. In addition, these compounds were tested for their cytotoxic activity, and evodiamine exhibited an IC 50 of 0.75 ± 0.04 μg mL -1 against the Ca9-22 cell line. At its core, this research represents a new means to synthesise these compounds, providing a more environmentally friendly and sustainable alternative to traditional approaches.

Cavity quantum electrodynamics (CQED) and its extensions are widely used for the description of exciton-polariton systems. However, the exciton-polariton models based on CQED vary greatly within different contexts. One of the most significant discrepancies among these CQED models is whether one should include direct intermolecular interactions in the CQED Hamiltonian. To answer this question, in this article, we derive an effective dissipative CQED model including free-space dipole-dipole interactions (CQED-DDI) from a microscopic Hamiltonian based on macroscopic quantum electrodynamics. Dissipative CQED-DDI successfully captures the nature of vacuum fluctuations in dielectric media and separates them into free-space effects and dielectric-induced effects. The former include spontaneous emissions, dephasings, and dipole-dipole interactions in free space; the latter include exciton-polariton interactions and photonic losses due to dielectric media. We apply dissipative CQED-DDI to investigate the exciton-polariton dynamics (the population dynamics of molecules above a plasmonic surface) and compare the results with those based on the methods proposed by several previous studies. Antioral cancer drugs need a greater antiproliferative impact on cancer than on normal cells. Demethoxymurrapanine (DEMU) inhibits proliferation in several cancer cells, but an in-depth investigation was necessary. This study evaluated the proliferation-modulating effects of DEMU, focusing on oral cancer and normal cells. DEMU (0, 2, 3, and 4 μg/mL) at 48 h treatments inhibited the proliferation of oral cancer cells (the cell viability (%) for Ca9-22 cells was 100.0 ± 2.2, 75.4 ± 5.6, 26.0 ± 3.8, and 15.4 ± 1.4, and for CAL 27 cells was 100.0 ± 9.4, 77.2 ± 5.9, 57.4 ± 10.7, and 27.1 ± 1.1) more strongly than that of normal cells (the cell viability (%) for S-G cells was 100.0 ± 6.6, 91.0 ± 4.6, 95.0 ± 2.6, and 95.8 ± 5.5), although this was blocked by the antioxidant N-acetylcysteine. The presence of oxidative stress was evidenced by the increase of reactive oxygen species and mitochondrial superoxide and the downregulation of the cellular antioxidant glutathione in oral cancer cells, but these changes were minor in normal cells. DEMU also caused greater induction of the subG1 phase, extrinsic and intrinsic apoptosis (annexin V and caspases 3, 8, and 9), and DNA damage (γH2AX and 8-hydroxy-2-deoxyguanosine) in oral cancer than in normal cells. N-acetylcysteine attenuated all these DEMU-induced changes. Together, these data demonstrate the preferential antiproliferative function of DEMU in oral cancer cells, with the preferential induction of oxidative stress, apoptosis, and DNA damage in these cancer cells, and low cytotoxicity toward normal cells., (© 2023 Wiley Periodicals LLC.)

Cells in the tumor microenvironment (TME) communicate via membrane-bound and secreted proteins, which are mostly glycosylated. Altered glycomes of malignant tumors influence behaviors of stromal cells. In this study, we showed that the loss of core-1 β1,3-galactosyltransferase (C1GALT1)-mediated O-glycosylation suppressed tumor growth in syngeneic head and neck cancer mouse models. O-glycan truncation in tumor cells promoted the M1 polarization of macrophages, enhanced T-cell-mediated cytotoxicity, and reduced interleukin-6 (IL-6) levels in the secretome. Proteasomal degradation of IL-6 was controlled by the O-glycan at threonine 166. Both IL-6/IL-6R blockade and O-glycan truncation in tumor cells induced similar pro-inflammatory phenotypes in macrophages and cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs). The combination of the O-glycosylation inhibitor itraconazole and anti-programmed cell death protein 1 (anti-PD-1) antibody effectively suppressed tumor growth in vivo. Collectively, our findings demonstrate that O-glycosylation in tumor cells governs their crosstalk with macrophages and CTLs. Enterovirus D68 (EV-D68), belonging to the genus Enterovirus of the Picornavirus family, is an emerging pathogen that can cause neurological and respiratory diseases in children. However, there is little understanding of the pathogenesis of EV-D68, and no effective vaccine or drug for the prevention or treatment of the diseases caused by this virus is available. Autophagy is a cellular process that targets cytoplasmic proteins or organelles to the lysosomes for degradation. Enteroviruses strategically harness the host autophagy pathway to facilitate the completion of their life cycle. Therefore, we selected an autophagy compound library to screen for autophagy-related compounds that may affect viral growth. By using the neutralization screening assay, we identified a compound, 'licochalcone A' that significantly inhibited EV-D68 replication. To investigate the mechanism by which licochalcone A inhibits EV-D68 replication and to identify the viral life cycle stage it inhibits, the time-of-addition, viral attachment, viral entry, and dual-luciferase reporter assays were performed. The results of the time-of-addition assay showed that licochalcone A, a characteristic chalcone found in liquorice roots and widely used in traditional Chinese medicine, inhibits EV-D68 replication during the early stages of the viral life cycle, while those of the dual-luciferase reporter assay showed that licochalcone A does not regulate viral attachment and entry, but inhibits EV-D68 IRES-dependent translation. Licochalcone A also inhibited enterovirus A71 and coxsackievirus B3 but did not significantly inhibit dengue virus 2 or human coronavirus 229E replication. Purpose: The aim of this study was to examine the quality of assessment and the utilisation of optical low vision aids (OLVAs) among people with visual impairment (VI) in Taiwan., Methods: The study included 577 participants between 4 and 100 years of age (314 males and 263 females). All participants had been certified by the Ministry of the Interior of Taiwan, indicating that they had undergone a thorough and comprehensive low vision assessment, including evaluation of visual acuity (VA), contrast sensitivity, colour vision, visual fields and glare disability. Furthermore, all participants who consented to refraction had received prescriptions for OLVAs., Result: All participants were prescribed one or more OLVAs such as eyeglasses, tinted lenses, magnifiers, closed-circuit television magnifiers, telescopes, or screen magnifiers. Among the 577 individuals, 515 received correction for refractive errors, providing the best-corrected VA (BCVA). The improvement in VA was significant at both distance and near, improving from 1.29 ± 0.55 to 1.01 ± 0.52 logMAR (p < 0.001) and from 1.29 ± 0.56 to 1.01 ± 0.52 logMAR (p < 0.001), respectively. Eyeglasses were the primary OLVAs chosen by 333 participants (64.7%), while 53.3%-80.3% of participants combined eyeglasses with other OLVAs to enhance their visual performance., Conclusions: The most commonly used and effective OLVA was eyeglasses. Five new eudensamane-type sesquiterpene lactones, clasamanes A-E ( 1 - 5 ), three new dolabellane-type diterpenes, clabellanes A-C ( 6 - 8 ), and fifteen known compounds ( 9 - 23 ) were isolated from the ethanolic extract of Taiwanese soft coral Clavularia spp. The structures of all undescribed components ( 1 - 8 ) were determined by analysis of IR, mass, NMR, and UV spectroscopic data. The absolute configuration of new compounds was determined by using circular dichroism and DP4+ calculations. The cytotoxic activities of all isolated marine natural products were evaluated. Compound 7 showed a significant cytotoxic effect against oral cancer cell line (Ca9-22) with an IC 50 value of 7.26 ± 0.17 μg/mL.

Exosomes are cell-derived membranous structures primarily involved in the delivery of the payload to the recipient cells, and they play central roles in carcinogenesis and metastasis. Radiotherapy is a common cancer treatment that occasionally generates exosomal miRNA-associated modulation to regulate the therapeutic anticancer function and side effects. Combining radiotherapy and natural products may modulate the radioprotective and radiosensitizing responses of non-cancer and cancer cells, but there is a knowledge gap regarding the connection of this combined treatment with exosomal miRNAs and their downstream targets for radiation and exosome biogenesis. This review focuses on radioprotective natural products in terms of their impacts on exosomal miRNAs to target radiation-modulating and exosome biogenesis (secretion and assembly) genes. Several natural products have individually demonstrated radioprotective and miRNA-modulating effects. However, the impact of natural-product-modulated miRNAs on radiation response and exosome biogenesis remains unclear. In this review, by searching through PubMed/Google Scholar, available reports on potential functions that show radioprotection for non-cancer tissues and radiosensitization for cancer among these natural-product-modulated miRNAs were assessed. Next, by accessing the miRNA database (miRDB), the predicted targets of the radiation- and exosome biogenesis-modulating genes from the Gene Ontology database (MGI) were retrieved bioinformatically based on these miRNAs. Moreover, the target-centric analysis showed that several natural products share the same miRNAs and targets to regulate radiation response and exosome biogenesis. As a result, the miRNA-radiomodulation (radioprotection and radiosensitization)-exosome biogenesis axis in regard to natural-product-mediated radiotherapeutic effects is well organized. This review focuses on natural products and their regulating effects on miRNAs to assess the potential impacts of radiomodulation and exosome biogenesis for both the radiosensitization of cancer cells and the radioprotection of non-cancer cells.

Cancerous exosomes contain diverse biomolecules that regulate cancer progression. Modulating exosome biogenesis with clinical drugs has become an effective strategy for cancer therapy. Suppressing exosomal processing (assembly and secretion) may block exosomal function to reduce the proliferation of cancer cells. However, the information on natural products that modulate cancer exosomes lacks systemic organization, particularly for exosomal long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs). There is a gap in the connection between exosomal lncRNAs and exosomal processing. This review introduces the database (LncTarD) to explore the potential of exosomal lncRNAs and their sponging miRNAs. The names of sponging miRNAs were transferred to the database (miRDB) for the target prediction of exosomal processing genes. Moreover, the impacts of lncRNAs, sponging miRNAs, and exosomal processing on the tumor microenvironment (TME) and natural-product-modulating anticancer effects were then retrieved and organized. This review sheds light on the functions of exosomal lncRNAs, sponging miRNAs, and exosomal processing in anticancer processes. It also provides future directions for the application of natural products when regulating cancerous exosomal lncRNAs.

Although vacuum-deposited metal halide perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) have great promise for use in large-area high-color-gamut displays, the efficiency of vacuum-sublimed PeLEDs currently lags that of solution-processed counterparts. In this study, highly efficient vacuum-deposited PeLEDs are prepared through a process of optimizing the stoichiometric ratio of the sublimed precursors under high vacuum and incorporating ultrathin under- and upper-layers for the perovskite emission layer (EML). In contrast to the situation in most vacuum-deposited organic light-emitting devices, the properties of these perovskite EMLs are highly influenced by the presence and nature of the upper- and presublimed materials, thereby allowing us to enhance the performance of the resulting devices. By eliminating Pb° formation and passivating defects in the perovskite EMLs, the PeLEDs achieve an outstanding external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 10.9% when applying a very smooth and flat geometry; it reaches an extraordinarily high value of 21.1% when integrating a light out-coupling structure, breaking through the 10% EQE milestone of vacuum-deposited PeLEDs., (© 2023 The Authors. The gills are the major organ for Na + uptake in teleosts. It was proposed that freshwater (FW) teleosts adopt Na + /H + exchanger 3 (Nhe3) as the primary transporter for Na + uptake and Na + -Cl - co-transporter (Ncc) as the backup transporter. However, convincing molecular physiological evidence to support the role of Ncc in branchial Na + uptake is still lacking due to the limitations of functional assays in the gills. Thus, this study aimed to reveal the role of branchial Ncc in Na + uptake with an in vivo detection platform (scanning ion-selective electrode technique, SIET) that has been recently established in fish gills. First, we identified that Ncc2-expressing cells in zebrafish gills are a specific subtype of ionocyte (NCC ionocytes) by using single-cell transcriptome analysis and immunofluorescence. After a long-term low-Na + FW exposure, zebrafish increased branchial Ncc2 expression and the number of NCC ionocytes and enhanced gill Na + uptake capacity. Pharmacological treatments further suggested that Na + is indeed taken up by Ncc, in addition to Nhe, in the gills. These findings reveal the uptake roles of both branchial Ncc and Nhe under FW and shed light on osmoregulatory physiology in adult fish.

Background/purpose: The clinical features of dihydropyridine-induced gingival overgrowth (DIGO), including extracellular matrix accumulation and cell hyperplasia, are regulated by inflammatory factors (e.g., Interleukin-1β [IL-1β]) in combination with calcium channel blockers (e.g., nifedipine [Nif]). We speculated that IL-1β and Nif (IL-1β/Nif) may be the main factor modulating the proliferative potential and turnover of fibroblasts in DIGO., Materials and Methods: We cultured four DIGO fibroblast strains and analysed the possible effects of IL-1β/Nif treatments on epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT)-associated proteins. We developed short hairpin ribonucleic acids (shRNAs) and used them to explore the role of IL-1β/Nif in regulating proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) levels in DIGO tissues., Results: Our results revealed that compared with control cells, DIGO cells stimulated with IL-1β/Nif had higher levels of the EMT-associated proteins Snail, Slug, and Twist. Drawing on concepts from conservation of resources theory, this study examines the effects of perceived workplace COVID-19 infection risk on employees' in-role (i.e., task), extra-role (i.e., OCBs: organizational citizenship behaviors), and creative performance via three mediators, namely, uncertainty, self-control, and psychological capital (i.e., PsyCap), and the moderation of leaders' safety commitment. Three sets of surveys were collected from 445 employees and 115 supervisors working in various industries during the 2021 COVID-19 (Alpha and Delta variants) outbreak in Taiwan, when vaccinations were not yet readily available. The Bayesian multilevel results reveal that COVID-19 infection risk (Time 1) is negatively associated with creativity (Time 3) as well as supervisor-rated task performance and OCBs (Time 3) via PsyCap. Additionally, the relationship between COVID-19 infection risk and creativity is mediated by the serial psychological processes of uncertainty (Time 2), self-control (Time 2), and PsyCap (Time 3). Furthermore, supervisors' safety commitment marginally moderates the relationships between uncertainty and self-control and between self-control and PsyCap. Conditional indirect results show that the effect of uncertainty on PsyCap via self-control is significant for supervisors with high-level safety commitment, and the effect of self-control on creative performance via PsyCap is significant for supervisors with both high- and low-level safety commitment. In summary, workplace COVID-19 infection risk stimulates a tandem psychological process and impairs employees' work-related performance; PsyCap plays a dominant role in this context. Many miRNAs are known to target the AKT serine-threonine kinase (AKT) pathway, which is critical for the regulation of several cell functions in cancer cell development. Many natural products exhibiting anticancer effects have been reported, but their connections to the AKT pathway (AKT and its effectors) and miRNAs have rarely been investigated. This review aimed to demarcate the relationship between miRNAs and the AKT pathway during the regulation of cancer cell functions by natural products. Identifying the connections between miRNAs and the AKT pathway and between miRNAs and natural products made it possible to establish an miRNA/AKT/natural product axis to facilitate a better understanding of their anticancer mechanisms. Moreover, the miRNA database (miRDB) was used to retrieve more AKT pathway-related target candidates for miRNAs. By evaluating the reported facts, the cell functions of these database-generated candidates were connected to natural products. Therefore, this review provides a comprehensive overview of the natural product/miRNA/AKT pathway in the modulation of cancer cell development.

The phosphor-converted light-emitting diode (PC-LED) has become an indispensable solid-state lighting and display technologies in the modern society. Nevertheless, the use of scarce rare-earth elements and the thermal quenching (TQ) behavior are still two most crucial issues yet to be solved. Here, this work successfully demonstrates a highly efficient and thermally stable green emissive MnI 2 (XanPO) crystals showing a notable photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of 94% and a super TQ resistance from 4 to 623 K. This unprecedented superior thermal stability is attributed to the low electron-phonon coupling and the unique rigid crystal structure of MnI 2 (XanPO) over the whole temperature range based on the temperature-dependent photoluminescence (PL) and single crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD) analyses. Considering these appealing properties, green PC-LEDs with a power efficacy of 102.5 lm W -1 , an external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 22.7% and a peak luminance up to 7750 000 cd m -2 are fabricated by integrating MnI 2 (XanPO) with commercial blue LEDs. Moreover, the applicability of MnI 2 (XanPO) in both micro-LEDs and organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) is also demonstrated. Cancer-derived exosomes exhibit sophisticated functions, such as proliferation, apoptosis, migration, resistance, and tumor microenvironment changes. Several clinical drugs modulate these exosome functions, but the impacts of natural products are not well understood. Exosome functions are regulated by exosome processing, such as secretion and assembly. The modulation of these exosome-processing genes can exert the anticancer and precancer effects of cancer-derived exosomes. This review focuses on the cancer-derived exosomal miRNAs that regulate exosome processing, acting on the natural-product-modulating cell functions of cancer cells. However, the role of exosomal processing has been overlooked in several studies of exosomal miRNAs and natural products. In this study, utilizing the bioinformatics database (miRDB), the exosome-processing genes of natural-product-modulated exosomal miRNAs were predicted. Consequently, several natural drugs that modulate exosome processing and exosomal miRNAs and regulate cancer cell functions are described here. This review sheds light on and improves our understanding of the modulating effects of exosomal miRNAs and their potential exosomal processing targets on anticancer treatments based on the use of natural products.

GalNAc-type O-glycosylation and its initiating GalNAc transferases (GALNTs) play crucial roles in a wide range of cellular behaviors. Among 20 GALNT members, GALNT2 is consistently associated with poor survival of patients with colorectal cancer in public databases. However, its clinicopathological significance in colorectal cancer remains unclear. In this study, immunohistochemistry showed that GALNT2 was overexpressed in colorectal tumors compared with the adjacent nontumor tissues. GALNT2 overexpression was associated with poor survival of colorectal cancer patients. Forced expression of GALNT2 promoted migration and invasion as well as peritoneal metastasis of colorectal cancer cells. In contrast, GALNT2 knockdown with siRNAs or knockout with CRISPR/Cas9 system suppressed these malignant properties. Interestingly, we found that GALNT2 modified O-glycans on AXL and determined AXL levels via the proteasome-dependent pathway. In addition, the GALNT2-promoted invasiveness was significantly reversed by AXL siRNAs. In this study, based on the theory developed in Paper I, we explore the combined effects of molecular fluorescence and excitation energy transfer in a minimal model-a pair of single-vibration-mode chromophores coupled to surface plasmon polaritons. For the chromophores with zero Huang-Rhys factors and strong couplings to surface plasmon polaritons, we find that the frequencies of Rabi oscillations (the strengths of strong light-matter couplings) are associated with the initial excitation conditions. On the other hand, for the chromophores weakly coupled to surface plasmon polaritons, our numerical calculations together with analytical analysis elaborate on the conditions for the superradiant and subradiant decay behaviors. Moreover, we show that the modified decay rate constants can be explicitly expressed in terms of generalized spectral densities (or dyadic Green's functions), revealing a relationship between photonic environments and the collective effects such as superradiance and subradiance. For the chromophores with nonzero Huang-Rhys factors and strong coupling to surface plasmon polaritons, the effects of molecular vibrations emerge. We demonstrate that the low-frequency vibrational modes do not affect the excited state population dynamics, while the high-frequency vibrational modes can modify either the period of Rabi oscillation (Franck-Condon Rabi oscillation) or the amplitude of excited state population. Our study shows that the collective effects, including superradiance and subradiance, can be controlled via dielectric environments and initial excitation conditions, providing new insights into polariton chemistry and the design of quantum optical devices.

In this study, we develop a theory of multichromophoric excitation energy transfer (MC-EET) in the framework of macroscopic quantum electrodynamics. The theory we present is general for studying the interplay between energy transfer and fluorescence in the presence of arbitrary inhomogeneous, dispersive, and absorbing media. The dynamical equations of MC-EET, including energy-transfer kernels and fluorescence kernels, allow us to describe the combined effects of molecular vibrations and photonic environments on excitation energy transfer. To demonstrate the universality of the MC-EET theory, we show that under specific conditions, the MC-EET theory can be converted to three representative theories. First, under the Markov approximation, we derive an explicit Förster-type expression for plasmon-coupled resonance energy transfer [Hsu et al., J. Phys. Chem. Lett. 8, 2357 (2017)] from the MC-EET theory. In addition, the MC-EET theory also provides a parameter-free formula to estimate transition dipole-dipole interactions mediated by photonic environments. Second, we generalize the theory of multichromophoric Förster resonance energy transfer [Jang et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 92, 218301 (2004)] to include the effects of retardation and dielectric environments. Third, for molecules weakly coupled with photonic modes, the MC-EET theory recovers the previous main result in Chance-Prock-Silbey classical fluorescence theory [Chance et al., J. Chem. Phys. 60, 2744 (1974)]. This study opens a promising direction for exploring light-matter interactions in multichromophoric systems with possible applications in the exciton migration in metal-organic framework materials and organic photovoltaic devices.

The purpose of this study aimed to assess the antiproliferation effects of methanol extract of T. swinhoei (METS) and explore the detailed responses of oral cancer cells compared to normal cells. METS effectively inhibits the cell proliferation of oral cancer cells but does not affect normal cell viability, exhibiting preferential antiproliferation function. METS exerted more subG1 accumulation, apoptosis induction, cellular and mitochondrial oxidative stress, and DNA damage than normal cells, reverted by oxidative stress inhibitor N -acetylcysteine. This METS-caused oxidative stress was validated to attribute to the downregulation of glutathione. METS activated both extrinsic and intrinsic caspases. DNA double-strand breaks (γH2AX) and oxidative DNA damage (8-hydroxy-2-deoxyguanosine) were stimulated by METS. Therefore, for the first time, this investigation shed light on exploring the functions and responses of preferential antiproliferation of METS in oral cancer cells.

It is an important issue for vocational school students to have good adaptability for their future life. This study combines career construction theory and self-determination theory to construct a model to explore the relationship between the "motivation," "self-efficacy," "fear of failure," "career adaptability," and "meaning in life" of vocational school students. This study used a secondary data research method and retrieved a total of 2,377 data from vocational school students in Taiwan from the perspective of data exploration using PISA 2018 data, which was validated by the partial least squares structural equation model (PLS-SEM). The following results were obtained: (1) Vocational students were afraid that failure would have a negative impact on their career adaptability. (2) Motivation and Self-efficacy had a positive effect on career adaptability. (3) Motivation positively affected fear of failure. (4) Self-efficacy negatively affected fear of failure. (5) Meaning in life could positively moderate the effect of self-efficacy on fear of failure. (6) However, there was no statistical difference in the moderating effect of meaning in life on the relationship between motivation and fear of failure. First, fear of failure negatively affected career adaptability, while motivation and self-efficacy positively affected career adaptability; compared to the three effects, the negative effect of fear of failure may not be as great as expected. Second, motivation is like a double-edged sword as it improves adaptability, but it also comes with an increased fear of failure. On the contrary, self-efficacy can simultaneously improve the career adaptability of vocational students and reduce their fear of failure. Therefore, the development of self-efficacy should be given priority over motivation in the career adaptability enhancement strategy of vocational students. Finally, the meaning of life can positively moderate the negative influence of self-efficacy on the fear of failure. AKT serine-threonine kinase (AKT) and its effectors are essential for maintaining cell proliferation, apoptosis, autophagy, endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress, mitochondrial morphogenesis (fission/fusion), ferroptosis, necroptosis, DNA damage response (damage and repair), senescence, and migration of cancer cells. Several lncRNAs and circRNAs also regulate the expression of these functions by numerous pathways. However, the impact on cell functions by lncRNAs and circRNAs regulating AKT and its effectors is poorly understood. This review provides comprehensive information about the relationship of lncRNAs and circRNAs with AKT on the cell functions of cancer cells. the roles of several lncRNAs and circRNAs acting on AKT effectors, such as FOXO, mTORC1/2, S6K1/2, 4EBP1, SREBP, and HIF are explored. To further validate the relationship between AKT, AKT effectors, lncRNAs, and circRNAs, more predicted AKT- and AKT effector-targeting lncRNAs and circRNAs were retrieved from the LncTarD and circBase databases. Consistently, using an in-depth literature survey, these AKT- and AKT effector-targeting database lncRNAs and circRNAs were related to cell functions. Therefore, some lncRNAs and circRNAs can regulate several cell functions through modulating AKT and AKT effectors. This review provides insights into a comprehensive network of AKT and AKT effectors connecting to lncRNAs and circRNAs in the regulation of cancer cell functions.

Oxidative stress and AKT serine-threonine kinase (AKT) are responsible for regulating several cell functions of cancer cells. Several natural products modulate both oxidative stress and AKT for anticancer effects. However, the impact of natural product-modulating oxidative stress and AKT on cell functions lacks systemic understanding. Notably, the contribution of regulating cell functions by AKT downstream effectors is not yet well integrated. This review explores the role of oxidative stress and AKT pathway (AKT/AKT effectors) on ten cell functions, including apoptosis, autophagy, endoplasmic reticulum stress, mitochondrial morphogenesis, ferroptosis, necroptosis, DNA damage response, senescence, migration, and cell-cycle progression. The impact of oxidative stress and AKT are connected to these cell functions through cell function mediators. Moreover, the AKT effectors related to cell functions are integrated. Based on this rationale, natural products with the modulating abilities for oxidative stress and AKT pathway exhibit the potential to regulate these cell functions, but some were rarely reported, particularly for AKT effectors. This review sheds light on understanding the roles of oxidative stress and AKT pathway in regulating cell functions, providing future directions for natural products in cancer treatment.

Data regarding the effects of crude extract of Commelina plants in oral cancer treatment are scarce. This present study aimed to assess the proliferation-modulating effects of the Commelina sp. (MECO) methanol extract on oral cancer cells in culture, Ca9-22, and CAL 27. MECO suppressed viability to a greater extent in oral cancer cells than in normal cells. MECO also induced more annexin V, apoptosis, and caspase signaling for caspases 3/8/9 in oral cancer cells. The preferential antiproliferation and apoptosis were associated with cellular and mitochondrial oxidative stress in oral cancer cells. Moreover, MECO also preferentially induced DNA damage in oral cancer cells by elevating γH2AX and 8-hydroxyl-2'-deoxyguanosine. The oxidative stress scavengers N -acetylcysteine or MitoTEMPO reverted these preferential antiproliferation mechanisms. It can be concluded that MECO is a natural product with preferential antiproliferation effects and exhibits an oxidative stress-associated mechanism in oral cancer cells.

Combined treatment is a promising anticancer strategy for improving antiproliferation compared with a single treatment but is limited by adverse side effects on normal cells. Fucoidan (FN), a brown-algae-derived polysaccharide safe food ingredient, exhibits preferential function for antiproliferation to oral cancer but not normal cells. Utilizing the preferential antiproliferation, the impacts of FN in regulating ultraviolet C (UVC) irradiation were assessed in oral cancer cells. A combined treatment (UVC/FN) reduced cell viability of oral cancer cells (Ca9-22 and CAL 27) more than single treatments (FN or UVC), i.e., 53.7%/54.6% vs. 71.2%/91.6%, and 89.2%/79.4%, respectively, while the cell viability of UVC/FN treating on non-malignant oral (S-G) was higher than oral cancer cells, ranging from 106.0 to 108.5%. Mechanistically, UVC/FN preferentially generated higher subG1 accumulation and apoptosis-related inductions (annexin V, caspases 3, 8, and 9) in oral cancer cells than single treatments. UVC/FN preferentially generated higher oxidative stress than single treatments, as evidenced by flow cytometry-detecting reactive oxygen species, mitochondrial superoxide, and glutathione. Moreover, UVC/FN preferentially caused more DNA damage (γH2AX and 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine) in oral cancer cells than in single treatments. N -acetylcysteine pretreatment validated the oxidative stress effects in these UVC/FN-induced changes. Taken together, FN effectively enhances UVC-triggered antiproliferation to oral cancer cells. UVC/FN provides a promising potential for preferential and synergistic antiproliferation in antioral cancer therapy.

Antiproliferation effects of Clavularia -derived natural products against cancer cells have been reported on, but most studies have focused on identifying bioactive compounds, lacking a detailed investigation of the molecular mechanism. Crude extracts generally exhibit multiple targeting potentials for anticancer effects, but they have rarely been assessed for methanol extracts of Clavularia inflata (MECI). This investigation aims to evaluate the antiproliferation of MECI and to examine several potential mechanisms between oral cancer and normal cells. A 24 h MTS assay demonstrated that MECI decreased cell viability in several oral cancer cell lines more than in normal cells. N -acetylcysteine (NAC), an oxidative stress inhibitor, recovered these antiproliferation effects. Higher oxidative stress was stimulated by MECI in oral cancer cells than in normal cells, as proven by examining reactive oxygen species and mitochondrial superoxide. This preferential induction of oxidative stress was partly explained by downregulating more cellular antioxidants, such as glutathione, in oral cancer cells than in normal cells. Consequently, the MECI-generated high oxidative stress in oral cancer cells was preferred to trigger more subG1 population, apoptosis expression (annexin V and caspase activation), and DNA damage, reverted by NAC. In conclusion, MECI is a potent marine natural product showing preferential antiproliferation against oral cancer cells.

Anti-interferon (IFN)-γ autoantibodies (AIGAs) are a pathogenic factor in late-onset immunodeficiency with disseminated mycobacterial and other opportunistic infections. AIGAs block IFN-γ function, but their effects on IFN-γ signaling are unknown. Using a single-cell capture method, we isolated 19 IFN-γ-reactive monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) from patients with AIGAs. All displayed high-affinity (KD < 10-9 M) binding to IFN-γ, but only eight neutralized IFN-γ-STAT1 signaling and HLA-DR expression. Signal blockade and binding affinity were correlated and attributed to somatic hypermutations. Cross-competition assays identified three nonoverlapping binding sites (I-III) for AIGAs on IFN-γ. We found that site I mAb neutralized IFN-γ by blocking its binding to IFN-γR1. Site II and III mAbs bound the receptor-bound IFN-γ on the cell surface, abolishing IFN-γR1-IFN-γR2 heterodimerization and preventing downstream signaling. Site III mAbs mediated antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity, probably through antibody-IFN-γ complexes on cells. Fibrosis is a hallmark of atrial structural remodeling. The main aim of this study was to investigate the role of micro-ribonucleic acids (miRNAs) in the modulation of fibrotic molecular mechanisms in response to hypoxic conditions, which may mediate atrial fibrosis. Under a condition of hypoxia induced by a hypoxia chamber, miRNA arrays were used to identify the specific miRNAs associated with the modulation of fibrotic genes. Luciferase assay, real-time polymerase chain reaction, immunofluorescence and Western blotting were used to investigate the effects of miRNAs on the expressions of the fibrotic markers collagen I and III (COL1A, COL3A) and phosphorylation levels of the stress kinase c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) pathway in a cultured HL-1 atrial cardiomyocytes cell line. COL1A and COL3A were found to be the direct regulatory targets of miR-let-7a, miR-let-7e and miR-133a in hypoxic atrial cardiac cells in vitro. The expressions of COL1A and COL3A were influenced by treatment with miRNA mimic and antagomir while hypoxia-induced collagen expression was inhibited by the delivery of miR-133a, miR-let-7a or miR-let-7e. The JNK pathway was critical in the pathogenesis of atrial fibrosis. The JNK inhibitor SP600125 increased miRNA expressions and repressed the fibrotic markers COL1A and COL3A. In conclusion, MiRNA let-7a, miR-let-7e and miR-133a play important roles in hypoxia-related atrial fibrosis by inhibiting collagen expression and post-transcriptional repression by the JNK pathway. These novel findings may lead to the development of new therapeutic strategies.

Recently, conductive-bridging memristors based on metal halides, such as halide perovskites, have been demonstrated as promising components for brain-inspired hardware-based neuromorphic computing. However, realizing devices that simultaneously fulfill all of the key merits (low operating voltage, high dynamic range, multilevel nonvolatile storage capability, and good endurance) remains a great challenge. Herein, we describe lead-free cesium halide memristors incorporating a MoO X interfacial layer as a type of conductive-bridging memristor. With this design, we obtained highly uniform and reproducible memristors that exhibited all-around resistive switching characteristics: ultralow operating voltages (<0.18 V), low variations (<30 mV), long retention times (>10 6 s), high endurance (>10 5 , full on/off cycles), record-high on/off ratios (>10 10 , smaller devices having areas <5 × 10 -4 mm 2 ), fast switching (<200 ns), and multilevel programming abilities (>64 states). With these memristors, we successfully implemented stateful logic functions in a reconfigurable architecture and accomplished a high classification accuracy ( ca. 90%) in the simulated hand-written-digits classification task, suggesting their versatility in future in-memory computing applications. In addition, we exploited the room-temperature fabrication of the devices to construct a fully functional three-dimensional stack of memristors, which demonstrates their potential of high-density integration desired for data-intensive neuromorphic computing. High-performance, environmentally friendly cesium halide memristors provide opportunities toward next-generation electronics beyond von Neumann architectures.

Followership is an important but understudied domain. This study adopted a follower-centric perspective to examine the internal process by which followership affects creative performance via work autonomy and creative self-efficacy. The study employed a 3-wave survey of 341 employees of a Taiwanese university to achieve the research purpose. This study showed that effective followership (Time 1) is positively associated with employees' work autonomy (Time 1) and creative self-efficacy (Time 2). Work autonomy and creative self-efficacy mediate the relationship between effective followership and creative performance (Time 3). The critical factors for regulating cancer metabolism are oxidative stress and phosphoinositide-3-kinase/AKT serine-threonine kinase/mechanistic target of the rapamycin kinase (PI3K/AKT/mTOR). However, the metabolic impacts of oxidative stress and PI3K/AKT/mTOR on individual mechanisms such as glycolysis (Warburg effect), pentose phosphate pathway (PPP), fatty acid synthesis, tricarboxylic acid cycle (TCA) cycle, glutaminolysis, and oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) are complicated. Therefore, this review summarizes the individual and interacting functions of oxidative stress and PI3K/AKT/mTOR on metabolism. Moreover, natural products providing oxidative stress and PI3K/AKT/mTOR modulating effects have anticancer potential. Using the example of brown algae-derived fucoidan, the roles of oxidative stress and PI3K/AKT/mTOR were summarized, although their potential functions within diverse metabolisms were rarely investigated. We propose a potential application that fucoidan may regulate oxidative stress and PI3K/AKT/mTOR signaling to modulate their associated metabolic regulations. This review sheds light on understanding the impacts of oxidative stress and PI3K/AKT/mTOR on metabolism and the future direction of metabolism-based cancer therapy of fucoidan.

Highly sensitive X-ray detection is crucial in, for example, medical imaging and secure inspection. Halide perovskite X-ray detectors are promising candidates for detecting highly energetic radiation. In this report, we describe vacuum-deposited Cs-based perovskite X-ray detectors possessing a p-i-n architecture. Because of the built-in potential of the p-i-n structure, these perovskite X-ray detectors were capable of efficient charge collection and displayed an exceptionally high X-ray sensitivity (1.2 C Gy air -1 cm -3 ) under self-powered, zero-bias conditions. We ascribe the outstanding X-ray sensitivity of the vacuum-deposited CsPbI 2 Br devices to their prominent charge carrier mobility. Moreover, these devices functioned with a lowest detection limit of 25.69 nGy air s -1 and possessed excellent stability after exposure to over 3000 times the total dose of a chest X-ray image. For comparison, we also prepared traditional spin-coated CH 3 NH 3 -based perovskite devices having a similar device architecture. Their volume sensitivity was only one-fifth of that of the vacuum-deposited CsPbI 2 Br devices. Thus, all-vacuum deposition appears to be a new strategy for developing perovskite X-ray detectors; with a high practical deposition rate, a balance can be reached between the thickness of the absorbing layer and the fabrication time.
