Abstract

The need for wireless condition monitoring and control of hydraulic systems in an autonomous and battery-free manner is attracting increasing attention in an effort to provide improved sensing functionality, monitoring of system health, and to avoid catastrophic failures. The potential to harvest energy from hydraulic pressure ripples and noise is particularly attractive since they inherently have a high energy intensity, which is associated with the hydraulic mean pressure and flow rate. This paper presents a comprehensive overview of the state of the art in hydraulic pressure energy harvesting, which includes the fundamentals of pressure ripples in hydraulic systems, the choice of electroactive materials and device structures, and the influence of the fluid–mechanical interface. In addition, novel approaches for improving the harvested energy and potential applications for the technology are discussed, and future research directions are proposed and outlined.

17. Dietary exposure to non-dioxin-like PCBs of the Hong Kong adult population from a total diet study.

Abstract

Dietary exposure of Hong Kong adults to the sum of the six indicator PCBs (Σ6 PCBs; PCB 28, 52, 101, 138, 153, and 180) was estimated in this study using the Total Diet Study (TDS) approach. Seventy one commonly-consumed food items of animal origin were sampled in four seasons and prepared as consumed in 2010-2011. The results showed that the main dietary source of Σ6 PCBs to the adult population was ‘fish, seafood and their products’ which accounted for 84.3% of the total exposure. About 50% of the total exposure was contributed by four fish species: salmon (cooked salmon and salmon sashimi, 19.9%), mandarin fish (14.7%), pomfret fish (8.5%) and yellow croaker (7.5%). Salmon was found to contain the highest mean level of Σ6 PCBs of 5.7 ng g−1 fresh weight at upper bound estimation, ranging from 4.4 to 6.3 ng g−1. The lower bound and upper bound exposure estimates of Ʃ6 PCBs to the average consumer of the population were found to be 0.68 and 1.38 ng kg−1 body weight day−1 respectively while for high consumers, the lower bound and upper bound exposure estimates were 3.08 and 3.84 ng kg−1 body weight day−1 respectively. Abstract

To improve the antitumor properties and optimize the pharmaceutical properties including solubility and protein binding of indolin-2-ones, a number of different basic and weakly basic analogues were designed and synthesized. 5-[5-Fluoro-2-oxo-1,2-dihydroindol-(3Z)-ylidenemethyl]-2,4-dimethyl-1H-pyrrole-3-carboxylic acid (2-diethylaminoethyl)amide (12b or SU11248) has been found to show the best overall profile in terms of potency for the VEGF-R2 and PDGF-Rβ tyrosine kinase at biochemical and cellular levels, solubility, protein binding, and bioavailability. 12b is currently in phase I clinical trials for the treatment of cancers.

38. Prevalence study and molecular characterization of alpha-thalassemia in Filipinos.

Abstract

In order to determine the prevalence and molecular basis of alpha-thalassemia (thal) among Filipinos, a total of 2954 Filipinos in Taiwan were enrolled in this study. A complete blood count was done for every subject. Those with microcytosis (MCV less than 82.5 fl) were studied with hemoglobin (Hb) high-performance liquid chromatography to determine the levels of Hb A2 and Hb F, and with an enzyme immunoassay to determine plasma ferritin levels. Those who had microcytosis and normal or low levels of Hb A2 and Hb F were further studied with molecular methods for alpha-globin gene mutations. We used Southern blot hybridization and/or the polymerase chain reaction to detect Southeast Asian deletion, Filipino deletion, rightward and leftward single alpha-globin gene deletions, and Hb Constant Spring and Hb Quong Sze. Specific amplification and direct DNA sequencing of the alpha2- and alpha1-globin genes were carried out in apparent alpha-thal carriers without any of the above-mentioned mutations. Our results showed that in Filipinos the prevalence of alpha-thal 1 was 5% (147 carriers) and that of alpha-thal 2 was 1.7% (49 carriers); two had Hb H disease. Among the alpha-thal 1 carriers, 89 had the Southeast Asian deletion and 58 had the Filipino deletion. Among the alpha-thal 2 carriers, 48 had a rightward deletion and one had a leftward deletion. None had Hb Constant Spring or Hb Quong Sze. Specific amplification and DNA sequencing in five apparent alpha-thal carriers did not reveal mutations in the 2-kb region spanning the alpha2- and alpha1-globin genes. The molecular defects of alpha-thal in Filipinos were different from those in the neighboring ethnic groups. Elucidation of the alpha-thal mutations in Filipinos is useful in the genetic counseling and prenatal diagnosis of this common disease. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
