This study aimed to present the influence of bio-based and anthraquinone dyes and their combinations on the optical properties of ethylene-propylene (EPM) composites after thermo-oxidative and climatic aging. Therefore, the chosen polymer was filled with a natural, plant-origin flavonoid—quercetin, and with two commercial anthraquinone dyes (C.I. Solvent Yellow 163 and C.I. Solvent Red 207). The manufactured polymer composites were subjected to accelerated aging tests: weathering and thermo-oxidation, respectively. Examination of the materials’ properties indicated that the combination of synthetic and natural dyes can result in better resistance to oxidizing agents and higher thermal stability of ethylene-propylene products. Moreover, color change of quercetin-containing samples due to exposure to simulated atmospheric conditions could be a promising solution for use as aging indicators in intelligent packaging materials that will inform about the ongoing degradation process. Another interesting finding is that these samples exhibited good fungistatic activity against Candida albicans yeast and Aspergillus niger mold. Overall, this novel solution based on hybrid polymer composites containing natural and commercial dyes is a more environmentally friendly alternative to traditional materials used in the plastic packaging industry with better and more desirable properties.

Three transmucosal fentanyl products have recently been licensed for cancer-related breakthrough pain: a sublingual tablet, a buccal/sublingual tablet and a nasal spray. Limited comparative data hinder identifying the most appropriate to use and adopt onto a service formulary. However, the availability of placebo formulations provides a unique opportunity to compare the practical aspects of their use.30 patients with cancer accessed and administered a placebo of each product and were asked to rate them using 1-7 Likert agree-disagree scales and free-text responses, with regard to ease of access and administration, palatability and overall impression. Participants rated their usual rescue analgesic similarly, based on recall. They also indicated whether they would be prepared to use the fentanyl product, and their most preferred.For accessibility, the usual rescue analgesic was rated best (median score 3), significantly better than the buccal/sublingual tablet (p=0.01) and nasal spray (p0.01), but not the sublingual tablet. Conversely, the nasal spray was rated significantly worse (median score 7) than the others (p0.01). For ease of administration, the usual rescue analgesic and sublingual tablet were rated equally best (median score 1), with only the latter being significantly different to the buccal/sublingual tablet (p=0.04) and nasal spray (p=0.05). For palatability, the sublingual tablet was rated the best (median score 2), but was significantly different only to the buccal/sublingual tablet (p0.01). For overall impression, the sublingual tablet was rated significantly better (median score 3) than the others, with more patients prepared to use it and selecting it as their most preferred (27 and 18, respectively).This survey provides valuable insight into the practical aspects of these three transmucosal fentanyl products for practitioners considering their use.

Renal biopsies were carried out in 25 mixed-breed dogs of both sexes, aged 6 to 11 years, using an automatic, laparoscopy-guided method. The aim of the study was to apply and evaluate the usefulness of this technique in the diagnosis of renal pathologies in dogs. Twenty biopsy specimens were obtained from the right kidney and five--from the left kidney. As many as 24 of the 25 effectively collected biopsy specimens were classified as excellent (96%). Significant histopathological changes were found in 23 of the 25 biopsies performed. The results of histopathological analyses show a predominance of glomerular lesions over interstitial lesions, mostly mesangial glomerulonephritis, membranous and membrane-proliferative glomerulonephritis. The study confirmed that laparoscopy-guided biopsy of the kidney in dogs is a safe and a highly useful diagnostic technique. The results of histopathological analyses of biopsy specimens correlated with clinical history, clinical examination results, blood and urine tests and ultrasound examination results have a great diagnostic value and they significantly affect treatment and prognosis. Laparoscopy-guided biopsy supports the diagnosis and differentiation of glomerular and interstitial lesions and renal neoplasia in dogs.

Probiotic bacteria have been known for over a century. Probiotics are defined as direct feed microbials or microbial cell preparations with a beneficial effect on the health and well-being of the host. Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium and Enterococcus strains are used most frequently as probiotics. In recent years, their use has increased significantly in both human and veterinary medicine. These bacteria play a significant role in the prevention and treatment of many diseases. Lactobacillus and Enterococcus are capable of colonizing the alimentary tract in dogs. As a result, probiotic bacteria take an important part in the treatment of chronic inflammatory bowel disease.

Summary The authors present their own experience in the management, methods of treatment and follow-up results of 128 patients with malignant tumours of the maxilla. There were 77 males and 53 females (sex ratio 1.5 : 1). Patients ages ranged from 3 to 83 years with an average of 53 years. Epithelial tumours were diagnosed in 69.5% and nonepithelial in 30.5%. In most cases the maxillary sinus was the primary focus of the tumour (40.3%). 94.4% of patients had epithelial tumours in stages III and IV ( UICC classification, 1973 ). Radical treatment was carried out in 94 patients in 4 radiotherapy only (lymphatic tumours), in 90 patients surgery with adjuvant radio- and/or chemotherapy mainly in the postoperative stage. During the follow-up local recurrence was diagnosed in 36.5% of radically treated patients, who subsequently underwent reoperation. A five-year survival rate was obtained in 45.1% of patients with epithelial tumours and in 14.3% of patients with nonepithelial tumours. The authors carried out their own method of prosthetic rehabilitation, mainly immediate, in 82 patients operated on. Immediate prosthetic rehabilitation is a final step in the surgical procedure. This method significantly diminishes functional disturbances, mainly in speech and mastication and remarkably improves the aesthetic result.
