Seven calves of the Bohemian Spotted and Black-Pied Lowland breeds, aged two to three months and a half, were experimentally invaded per os with 5 000, 10 000, 25 000, 70 000, 95 000, 113 000 and 120 000 eggs of Taenia saginata. In the calf invaded with 70 000 eggs, antibodies were detected by the ELISA method already a week from invasion and in the remaining calves two to three weeks from invasion. The increase in the content of antibodies in the blood serum of the invaded animals was statistically significant from the fourth to the tenth week from invasion when the titre was 1 : 160 to 1 : 320 and when the measured extinction values ranged from 0.53 to 0.58. The antibody level remained significant and positive for seven months and a half to nine months. Clinical symptoms were observed in the calves invaded with 25 000 to 120 000 eggs for a period of 7 to 20 days from the 10th to 11th or 19th day after invasion. In the remaining calves the clinical symptoms were not significant. The post-mortal examination of four calves showed 2.1 to 3.9% of cysticerci from the applied eggs. The ELISA enzymatically immunological method, which was used for the first time in the Czech Socialist Republic in the case of cysticercosis, is suitable for detecting antibodies to the parasite Cysticercus bovis in the blood serum of calves experimentally invaded with the eggs of the tapeworm Taenia saginata.

Pilot trials are described in which BHS, a Czechoslovak fasciolicide, was employed for mass treatment of fasciolosis in cloven-hoofed animals in wild-animals' reserves at the rate of 30 mg body weight using BHS-medicated feed. The treatment was combined with control measures against the intermediate host snail, Lymnaea truncatula, in primary biotopes using Frescon, a molluscicide of English origin, and CF-4, a molluscicide of Czechoslovak origin, at concentration of 1 and 0.5 per cent, respectively. Where the application of molluscicides was impracticable the intermediate host snails were controlled by means of sciomyzid larvae or by blasting surface layers of the soil.--Using this combined approach, the extensity of infestation, evaluated on the basis of coproovoscopical examination, was reduced from 7.05 to 0.71 per cent. The extensity of infestation, evaluated on the basis of necropsy findings, was reduced from 50 to 6.2 per cent. The intensity of infestation was reduced from 7.7 to 0.31 per cent per animal.--The results may prove useful in devising fasciolosis control schemes based on a complex approach.

The average digestibility coefficients of feed mixture nutrients in pigs infected medium severely to severely by the helminths Ascaris suum and Oesophagostomum dentatum were lower in comparison with the post-dehelminthization condition (dry matter by 3.1%, crude protein by 6.7%, fat by 8.9%, nitrogen-free extracts and fibre by 2.2%, organic matter by 3.1%). The content of total digestible nutrients made 679 g in infected pigs and 708 g in dehelminthized pigs. In the period following the experimental infection of pigs by the helminths Ascaris suum, characterized by the formation of antibodies and adaptation after heavy injury of the organism, the digestibility coefficients of feed mixture nutrients were in comparison with the state prior to infection influenced positively. In two metabolism trials, on the 9th to 13th day after infection the digestibility coefficients increased as follows: of dry matter by 4.8% and 3.6%, crude protein by 8.2 and 4.2%, nitrogen-free extracts and fibre by 2.0 and 3.5% and organic matter by 3.0 and 3.3%. The decrease in fat digestibility coefficients was observed in both cases, by 12.4% and 9.9%. Prior to infection the content of total digestible nutrients was 712 g and 682 g, after infection 731 g and 707 g.

Biochemical and hematological blood parameters were investigated in pigs experimentally infected with Ascaris suum. The most marked changes were recorded on day 5-8 post inoculation, during fever. In this period there was a marked decrease of concentrations of albumin, iron, thyroxin, A and E vitamins in blood serum, while compared with the control group the contents of A vitamin in liver did not change. Further, the concentrations of nonesterified fatty acid increased, as well as those of inorganic phosphorus and 11-hydroxycorticosteroids. Till day 13 PI the decrease of albumin and iron concentrations intensified and a recession of cholesterol serum binding capacity for iron was also recorded. Our results suggest that the acute phase of pig ascariasis is accompanied by changes in the host metabolism, generally corresponding to findings in fever states of different aetiology.

Mebendazole, administered at a dose of 30 mg active substance per 1 kg of feed, was found to have 100% effectiveness on Ascaris suum and Cambendazole, administered at a dose of 1.5 g per 1 kg of liver weight, showed the same effectiveness in the control of Ascaris suum and Oesophagostomum dentatum. The effectiveness of both drugs on Trichocephalus suis and Strongyloides ransomi was low. Mebendazole and Cambendazole can be recommended for mass dehelminthization of pigs in affected stocks. Helminthoovoscopical examination of sows and fattened pigs showed an 88.6% extensity of invasion in sows, and a 28.3% and 33.9% extensity in three- and five-month-old pigs, respectively. Coccidiosis was found in 51.4% of the sows and Balantidium coli had an occurrence rate of 80.7 to 98.2%.

The elimination of the sources of invasion, i. e. hay and forage coming from the infested biotopes, combined with the administration of bithionol sulphoxide, resulted in a reduction of the invasion of cattle by Fascioloides magna from 21.1 to 3.2% within two years. The Czechoslovak-produced bithionol sulphoxide, administered at a rate of 40 to 50 mg per kg body weight as medicated feed, showed 100% effectiveness. At doses higher than 30 mg per kg body weight, the protective period should be prolonged to three or four weeks.

The incidence of coccidiosis was evaluated in pullets and broilers raised in large--scale conditions. We confirmed a relationship between the extensity and intensity of coccidium incidence on the one hand and the content of anticoccidic drugs in feed mixtures and the husbandry standard on poultry farms on the other. We studied the causes of failure of the efficiency of the anticoccidic drug Amprol Plus after a short time of its administration to the fowl and we demonstrated a resistant strain of the field isolate of Eimeria tenella in connection with low doses of this anticoccidic drug in feed mixtures.
