Abstract

Objective: Chronic inflammatory conditions are now well acknowledged as major causes of mortality and morbidity. More than 50% of all-cause mortalities were attributed to inflammatory diseases like stroke, cardiovascular diseases, cancer, neurodegenerative diseases, or chronic kidney disease. Moreover, diet was found to be associated with major inflammatory biomarkers like C-reactive protein, or adiponectin. From there findings demonstrated through its inflammatory potential diet is associated to several aspects of health, like chronic diseases, gut health and mental health. Recent meta-analyses, found in fact a correlation between a higher dietary inflammatory score and risks of cardiovascular diseases and Type 2 Diabetes. Also, a similar association is seen for mental health, a more inflammatory diet was found to be associated with a 28% higher risk of depression, and 27% higher risk of anxiety. A pro-inflammatory diet was further associated with a higher probability of having gastrointestinal symptoms like finding mucus or liquid in the stools. Unfortunately, Lebanon has been witnessing a shift to a more inflammatory dietary pattern since 2011. Also, due to the current crises affecting all sectors in Lebanon today, physical, mental and gut health are deteriorating. It is therefore timely, to evaluate the association between the diet’s inflammatory capacity and the prevalence of chronic diseases, mental health status, and gut health status in Lebanese adults. Methods: A total of 75 Lebanese people between the ages of 45 and 65 were recruited from several governorates in Lebanon (including Beirut, South Lebanon, and Mount Lebanon) through different social media platforms to participate in this pilot cross-sectional study. Dietary intake was evaluated using a validated 61 items food frequency questionnaire and the Empirical Dietary Inflammatory Index (eDII) was used then used to determine the inflammatory potential of their diets. Everett Abstract: Dietary modifications are common treatment strategies for patients with various chronic diseases, but it is unclear how often these individuals read food labels. The objective of this study was to determine whether patients with chronic disease who are advised to change their eating habits read nutrition labels more than patients who have not been so advised, and whether that impacts their energy and nutrient intake. Analysis of the 2005-2006 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, a nationally representative, cross-sectional survey of the United States population, was performed. Adults (20 years of age or older) who participated in the 2005-2006 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey and who had type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and/or hyperlipidemia were included for analysis. There were 3,748 unweighted participants, which represents 170,958,166 in the US population. Proportions of patients with chronic disease who read nutrition labels were compared by I.sup.2 analysis, mean values of various components of their diet were compared by the two-sample independent t test, and odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals were determined by logistic regression. Among patients with chronic disease, the odds of reading food labels when told by their doctor or another health professional to reduce calories or weight was 50% higher than in those without physician intervention (odds ratio=1.50, 95% confidence interval: 1.12 to 2.00). Those who read food labels consumed less energy, saturated fat, carbohydrates, and sugar, and more fiber than those who did not. Abstract

Since 1941, the recommended dietary allowances (RDAs) in the United States have been based on the goal of maintaining health in the country's population. There has been a growing body of evidence to support the role of diet in reducing the risk of chronic diseases. For this reason, there has been recent emphasis on considering data on chronic disease endpoints for setting dietary reference intakes (DRIs). Despite this emphasis, none of the RDAs set during the DRI review were based on chronic disease risk. However, chronic disease risk was considered for determining adequate intakes and even some acceptable macronutrient distribution ranges. This article discusses the application of and challenges associated with using chronic disease endpoints in setting DRIs.

Stuart, Helena Truszczynska Abstract: Relying on data derived from medical records of past visits to a physician, patients' charts were examined to evaluate the effectiveness of a single nutrition counseling session provided by the same registered dietitian in improving outcome measures for patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus or cardiovascular disease. This was a retrospective study of 175 patients' charts from which laboratory data were extracted before and at 3 months after seeing the dietitian. Records were categorized into two groups based on whether the patient had attended or not attended a single nutrition counseling session. At 3 months, the group that received the nutrition counseling had statistically significant improvements in blood values and body mass index compared with the group that did not receive nutrition counseling. This study further confirms the value of a single nutrition counseling session as an effective approach to treating type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Abstract

We explored associations of religious orientation with dietary behavior among participants in the Eating for a Healthy Life Study (EHL), a randomized low-fat, high-fruit/vegetable dietary intervention trial in religious organizations. Data in this report are from baseline telephone surveys of 2,375 people, which assessed dietary behaviors (Fat- and Fiber-Related Diet Behavior Questionnaire) and religiosity (Allport-Ross Religious Orientation Scale). After adjusting for demographic characteristics, higher extrinsic (socially motivated) religious orientation was positively associated with low-fat dietary fat behaviors (P=.0438). No associations were observed for dietary behaviors and intrinsic (life based on religious beliefs) religious orientation. These results support further exploration of religious orientation's potential influence on dietary behaviors and its applicability to dietary interventions. J Am Diet Assoc. 2004;104:1292-1296.
