A primary driving force of today’s urban environment is the development or enhancement of building stock with a focus on minimizing its environmental footprint, eliminating its dependence on fossil fuels, enforcing its energy efficiency and self-sufficiency, and helping alleviate climate change. Therefore, in the present study, an up-to-date review regarding the passive building retrofitting techniques for sustainable and energy efficiency design is conducted. Numerous passive building solutions and design concepts are thoroughly examined in terms of innovation and energy-saving potential. The examined techniques include novel thermal insulation materials, innovative windows systems, high thermal mass technologies, optically advanced coatings appropriate for cooling abatement, and various energy-efficient bioclimatic designs, for instance, shading techniques, mechanical ventilation in combination with heat recovery, and green roofs and façades. The scope of the present review is to thoroughly and comparatively investigate passive building energy retrofit solutions as presented in the recent scientific literature mainly within the last five or up to ten years. The passive, energy-mitigating solutions are examined in terms of energy savings primarily in residential buildings, but also in tertiary buildings, as well as of specific investment costs. Lastly, an extensive discussion evaluating the comparative advantages and disadvantages of the examined passive envelope technologies is conducted, allowing a comprehensive and multilevel comparison.

The present study investigates the incorporation of renewable rooftop photovoltaic systems in fully electrified residential buildings and estimates the zero-energy demand building potential in relation to the climatic data of Greece. Specifically, the aim of the analysis is to calculate the maximum possible number of stories and therefore the total building height for a complete transformation to zero-net-energy building. The energy analysis, which is conducted using the DesignBuilder software, focuses on single-floor up to seven-story buildings. The importance of the present work lies in the acknowledgment of the diversity of the Greek residential sector, the adherence to national energy policies, and the European goal of fully electrified buildings. The examined case studies are equipped with electrically driven air-to-air heat pumps serving the space heating and cooling demands and with an air-to-water heat pump covering the domestic hot water requirements. The investigated locations are the four main cities of Greece, Athens, Thessaloniki, Chania, and Kastoria, which represent the country’s four climatic categories. The conducted analysis allows for the mapping of the zero-energy building potential for the climatic data of Greece, demonstrating the possibility of striking a positive building energy balance through the integration of on-site renewable energy sources and the production of necessary electrical energy. The novelty of the present work lies in the identification of a key factor, namely, the building height, which determines the feasibility of transforming multifamily buildings into zero-energy buildings. According to the analysis results, the critical number of stories is calculated at six for Chania, five for Athens, four for Thessaloniki, and two for Kastoria. Regarding a three-story residential building, the incorporation of a renewable photovoltaic system can result in an annual surplus electricity production of 13,741 kWh (Chania), 10,424 kWh (Athens), and 6931 kWh (Thessaloniki), and a corresponding coverage of 100% (Chania), 69.0% (Athens), 38.9% (Thessaloniki) and 0% (Kastoria).

The partial evaporation organic Rankine cycle (PE-ORC) is an emerging technology for the efficient exploitation of low-temperature heat sources. The purpose of the present study is the energy and thermodynamic analysis of a solar-fed PE-ORC with a solar field of evacuated flat plate collectors coupled to a sensible storage tank. The studied PE-ORC operates with the environmentally friendly working fluid R1233zd(E) with variable evaporation percentage in the expander inlet. The thermodynamic investigation is done with a validated model in Engineering Equation Solver, and the transient analysis is performed with the TRNSYS tool by coupling it with the thermodynamic model. According to the dynamic analysis, the annual electrical yield is found at 6243 kWh, while the maximum obtained value is found at 3.81 kW. Moreover, the annual mean solar field efficiency was calculated at 45.0%, the annual mean thermodynamic cycle efficiency at 8.71% and the annual mean system efficiency at 3.68%.

This study examined the performance of a concentrating solar collector with an asymmetric reflector. Two receivers were investigated, differing in the presence of photovoltaic cells. The first one was equipped with cells on both sides while the other was without cells. The analysis was performed using a numerical model that integrates a combination of three-dimensional optical and thermal analyses developed in COMSOL. The investigation included studying the influence of CuO/water and CuO/Syltherm 800 nanofluids on the thermal performance for the receiver without photovoltaic elements, as well as on both thermal and electrical efficiencies for the hybrid receiver. Two volumetric concentrations of CuO in water and Syltherm 800, 3% and 5%, were explored with varying inlet temperatures, ranging from 20 °C to 80 °C for the hybrid solar unit and from 20 °C to 140 °C for the thermal solar unit. The outcomes of the examination were compared between the nanofluids and the pure base fluid. Properly pressurized water was considered in the case without photovoltaic elements.

Energy retrofit solutions that concern a building’s roof structure play a significant role in the enhancement of a building’s thermal behaviour. This study investigates the integration of phase change materials (PCMs) with cool coatings (CCs) or thermochromic coatings (TCCs), namely, a PCM roof, a PCM-CC roof, and a PCM-TCC roof, as alternative and novel tactics for the simultaneous control of solar heat transfer and solar heat reflection. An energy simulation analysis with the DesignBuilder tool is conducted for a one-story residence and the climatic conditions of Athens. The simulation results indicate that, compared to the existing concrete roof construction, the PCM roof, PCM-CC, and PCM-TCC roof systems demonstrate energy savings that reach up to 13.55%, 16.04%, and 21.70%, respectively. The systematic analysis reveals that the increase in PCM’s thickness leads to an increase in the total electricity savings of the buildings, but in the case of PCM-CC and PCM-TCC roof systems, they merely effect the cooling thermal loads. The mean phase transition temperature that favours the cumulative electricity savings is 28 °C in the case of PCM and PCM-TCC roof systems and 35 °C in the case of PCM-CC roof systems. The methodology of this study allows the design of efficient, integrated roof systems with advanced thermal and optical properties as energy retrofit solutions for Mediterranean climatic conditions.

Aiming to reduce the use of conventional energy sources, alternative methods should be applied in order to cover society’s needs. In this context, in the present study, the operation of a transcritical CO2 commercial refrigeration unit is investigated, coupled with two power production cycles. The first cycle is a supercritical CO2 Brayton system that is supplied with heat by a solar field including parabolic trough collectors, while the second one is an organic Rankine cycle, utilizing as a heat source the low enthalpy CO2 exiting the first cycle. The novelty of this system is attributed to the combination an advanced transcritical CO2 refrigeration system with power production cycles that operate under the optimal conditions, as well as to the reason that the operation of the refrigeration unit is independent from the solar energy, since it can provide refrigeration output regardless of the solar heat input. The results prove that the increased number of solar collectors leads to more advantageous power production results, although with higher capital costs. Furthermore, greater energy production is noted when the ambient temperature is lower and abundant solar power is available. For the case of installing five solar collectors and an organic Rankine cycle, it is found that the annual energy production of the total system is 173.72 MWh, while the annual energy consumption of the refrigeration unit is 466.66 MWh, meaning that 37.23 % of energy savings are achieved annually. For the same configuration, according to the life cycle cost analysis, the capital cost is found equal to 243.72 k€, leading to a payback period of 7.6 years. By the end of the project’s lifetime, the operation of the installed system returns 298.42 k€ to the investor.

The specific work presents an optical and thermal investigation of a hybrid thermo-photovoltaic solar collector with an asymmetrical compound parabolic mirror. Such collectors offer an innovative and sustainable approach to address both the thermal and electrical demands of residents on islands using renewable sources of energy and thus reducing the dependency on fossil fuels. The main goal of this investigation involves an analysis of the prementioned type of solar collector, incorporating an innovative and cost-effective numerical modelling technique aiming to enhance comprehension of its energy and exergy performance. The optical performance of the collector was calculated first with ray tracing for the month of June, and the ideal slope was determined for the same month. After the optical analysis, the energy and exergy performance were both estimated by implementing a novel numerical method in both COMSOL and SolidWorks. Based on the optical analysis, it was determined that the most favorable inclination angle for achieving optimum optical efficiency on the mean day of June is 10°. The thermal analysis, focusing on thermal efficiency, showed a maximum deviation of 5.3% between the two solutions, which indicates the reliability of the method. The collector achieved a maximum thermal efficiency of 58.55% and a maximum exergy efficiency of 16.94%.

The exploitation of solar irradiation is a critical weapon for facing the energy crisis and critical environmental problems. One of the most emerging solar technologies is the use of solar towers (or central receiver systems) coupled with high-performance thermodynamic cycles. In this direction, the present investigation examines a solar tower coupled to a closed-loop Brayton cycle which operates with supercritical CO2 (sCO2) as the working medium. The system also includes a storage system with two molten salt tanks for enabling proper thermal storage. The sCO2 is an efficient fluid that presents significant advancements, mainly reduced compression work when it is compressed close to the critical point region. The novelty of the present work is based on the detailed dynamic investigation of the studied configuration for the year period using adjustable time step and its sizing for achieving a continuous operation, something that makes possible the establishment of this renewable technology as a reliable one. The analysis is conducted with a developed model in the Modelica programming language by also using the Dymola solver. According to the simulation results, the yearly solar thermal efficiency is 50.7%, the yearly thermodynamic cycle efficiency is 42.9% and the yearly total system efficiency is 18.0%.

The objective of this paper is the parametric analysis of a solar-fed trigeneration system ideal for the building sector that produces useful heat, electricity and cooling. The examined unit is driven by 100 m2 of parabolic trough collectors which are combined with a sensible storage tank with thermal oil. An organic Rankine cycle is fed by solar useful heat production and it produces electricity while a part of its power drives a vapor compression cycle with R290. Heating is also produced by separate heat exchangers in the solar loop. The parametric analysis is conducted in steady-state conditions with a developed model in Engineering Equation Solver. The examined parameters are the following: superheating degree in the turbine inlet, cooling production, heating production, solar beam irradiation intense, sun angle, pressure level in the turbine inlet and heat source temperature level. For the nominal scenario of 10 kW cooling production at 5°C and 10 kW heating production at 60°C, the system produces 6.14 kW electricity, while the exergy and energy efficiencies are found 12.14% and 37.34% respectively. Assuming that the system operates 2500 h yearly, the simple payback period of the investment is calculated at 8.5 years. The maximum examined values for both heating and cooling production are at 20 kW.

The goal of this investigation is the thorough analysis and optimization of a solar-assisted heat pump heating unit for covering the space heating demand for a building in Athens, Greece. The novelty of the studied system is the use of a high-temperature heat pump that can operate with radiative terminal units, leading to high thermal comfort standards. The examined system includes flat-plate solar thermal collectors, an insulated thermal storage tank, auxiliary electrical thermal resistance in the tank and a high-temperature heat pump. The economic optimization indicates that the optimal design includes 35 m2 of solar thermal collectors connected with a storage tank of 2 m3 for facing the total heating demand of 6785 kWh. In this case, the life cycle cost was calculated at 22,694 EUR, the seasonal system coefficient of performance at 2.95 and the mean solar thermal efficiency at 31.60%. On the other hand, the multi-objective optimization indicates the optimum design is the selection of 50 m2 of solar field connected to a thermal tank of 3 m3. In this scenario, the life cycle cost was calculated at 24,084 EUR, the seasonal system coefficient of performance at 4.07 and the mean solar thermal efficiency at 25.33%.

The exploitation of renewable energy sources in the building sector is a challenging aspect of achieving sustainability. The incorporation of a proper storage unit is a vital issue for managing properly renewable electricity production and so to avoid the use of grid electricity. The present investigation examines a zero-energy residential building that uses photovoltaics for covering all its energy needs (heating, cooling, domestic hot water, and appliances-lighting needs). The building uses a reversible heat pump and an electrical heater, so there is not any need for fuel. The novel aspect of the present analysis lies in the utilization of hydrogen as the storage technology in a power-to-hydrogen-to-power design. The residual electricity production from the photovoltaics feeds an electrolyzer for hydrogen production which is stored in the proper tank under high pressure. When there is a need for electricity, and the photovoltaics are not enough, the hydrogen is used in a fuel cell for producing the needed electricity. The present work examines a building of 400 m2 floor area in Athens with total yearly electrical demand of 23,656 kWh. It was found that the use of 203 m2 of photovoltaics with a hydrogen storage capacity of 34 m3 can make the building autonomous for the year period.

High-temperature heat pumps consist of a promising choice for substituting conventional boilers and producing hot water with temperature levels in the range of 70–80 °C. The use of high-temperature heat pumps makes it possible to exploit the existing radiators in existing buildings to achieve effective heating of the indoor space and keep thermal comfort at high standards. The goal of this work is the detailed investigation of a high-temperature heat pump, with the R1234ze(E) as the working medium for producing heating at 80 °C for space-heating purposes, in Greek climate conditions. The analysis was conducted at two locations, one in the south (Athens—Zone B) and one in the north (Thessaloniki—Zone C), in order to examine the performance of the study’s technology in the most representative locations of Greece. The thermodynamic analysis of the heat pump was performed with a developed model in Engineering Equation Solver by exploiting real data from the compressor manufacturer and by practically using a gray box model. The heating thermal loads were calculated with a dynamic analysis using TRNSYS software. According to the final results, the high-temperature heat pump was beneficial when compared to a conventional oil boiler from energy, financial, and environmental points of view. The net savings were found at EUR 6448 for Athens and EUR 13,161 for Thessaloniki; the simple payback period resulted in 8.03 years for Athens and 6.11 years for Thessaloniki, while the CO2 emissions avoidance was found at 35% for Athens and 32% for Thessaloniki. Last but not least, the lifetime CO2 emissions reduction was calculated at 20,882 kgCO2 for Athens and 35,278 kgCO2 for Thessaloniki.

Hydrogen has received increased attention in the last decades as a green energy carrier and a promising future fuel. The integration of hydrogen, as well as the development of cogeneration plants, makes the energy sector more eco-friendly, and sustainable. The aim of this paper is the investigation of a solar-fed cogeneration system that can produce power and compressed green hydrogen. The examined unit contains a parabolic trough collector solar field, a thermal energy storage tank, an organic Rankine cycle, and a proton exchange membrane water electrolyzer. The installation also includes a hydrogen storage tank and a hydrogen compressor. The unit is analyzed parametrically in terms of thermodynamic performance and economic viability in steady-state conditions with a developed and accurate model. Taking into account the final results, the overall energy efficiency is calculated at 14.03%, the exergy efficiency at 14.94%, and the hydrogen production rate at 0.205 kg/h. Finally, the payback period and the net present value are determined at 9 years and 122 k€, respectively.

An innovative parabolic trough concentrator coupled to a twin cavity receiver (PTC-TC) in evacuated tube conditions is investigated thermally and optically. The suggested design is compared with a PTC design with a flat receiver (PTC-F) in order to evaluate the efficiency of the proposed configuration. In the very first stages of the study, the optical efficiency was calculated for both collectors, and the optimum design was determined in the PTC-TC case. Then a mass flow rate independency procedure was conducted to ensure accurate results and to make a suitable comparison. The collectors were examined in a wide range of inlet temperatures ranging from 20 °C to 200 °C, and the thermal performance was calculated. Through the comparison process, it was revealed that the proposed collector appears to have higher thermal performance than the typical collector. In particular, there was a mean enhancement of approximately 8%, while the minimum enhancement was found to be greater than 5%. The simulation results regarding both configurations were verified through two models based on theoretical equations. In both geometries, the mean deviations in the verification procedure were lower than 5.6% in both the Darcy friction factor and the Nusselt number. The design and the simulations were conducted with the SolidWorks Flow Simulation tool.

The aim of the present work is the analysis of a solar-driven unit that is located on the non-interconnected island of Kythnos, Greece, that can produce electricity and green hydrogen. More specifically, solar energy is exploited by parabolic trough collectors, and the produced heat is stored in a thermal energy storage tank. Additionally, an organic Rankine unit is incorporated to generate electricity, which contributes to covering the island’s demand in a clean and renewable way. When the power cannot be absorbed by the local grid, it can be provided to a water electrolyzer; therefore, the excess electricity is stored in the form of hydrogen. The produced hydrogen amount is compressed, afterward stored in tanks, and then finally can be utilized as a fuel to meet other important needs, such as powering vehicles or ferries. The installation is simulated parametrically and optimized on dynamic conditions, in terms of energy, exergy, and finance. According to the results, considering a base electrical load of 75 kW, the annual energy and exergy efficiencies are found at 14.52% and 15.48%, respectively, while the payback period of the system is determined at 6.73 years and the net present value is equal to EUR 1,073,384.

The objective of this work is the integration of a linear cavity receiver in an asymmetric compound parabolic collector. Two different numerical models were developed; one for the conventional geometry and one for the cavity configuration. Both models were examined for inlet temperatures from 20 °C up to 80 °C, considering water as the operating fluid with a typical volume flow rate of 15 lt/h. Emphasis was given to the comparison of the thermal and optical performance between the designs, as well as in the temperature levels of the fluids and the receiver. The geometry of the integrated cavity receiver was optimized according to two independent parameters and two possible optimum designs were finally revealed. The optimization took place regarding the optical performance of the collector with the cavity receiver. The simulation results indicated that the cavity design leads to enhancements of up to 4.40% and 4.00% in the optical and thermal efficiency respectively, while the minimum possible enhancement was above 2.20%. The mean enhancements in optical and thermal performance were found to be 2.90% and 2.92% respectively. Moreover, an analytical solution was developed for verifying the numerical results and the maximum deviations were found to be less than 5% in all the compared parameters. Especially, in thermal efficiency verification, the maximum deviation took a value of less than 0.5%. The design and the simulations in the present study were conducted with the SolidWorks Flow Simulation tool.

Solar-driven trigeneration systems are able to cover all the building energy needs in heating, cooling and electricity using only the solar energy. The objective of this paper is to evaluate a solar trigeneration system under different criteria in order to make clear that there are numerous factors which have to be taken into consideration in the trigeneration system design. The examined system consists of parabolic trough solar collectors, a storage tank, an organic Rankine cycle and an absorption heat pump. The system is evaluated using different evaluation criteria which are associated with the energy, the exergy and the financial performance of the system. Moreover, a new criterion which takes into account the building energy needs is introduced and is investigated in different scenarios. The final results of this work clearly indicate that the optimisation of the solar driven trigeneration systems is depended on the desired design conditions and goals. Renewable energy exploitation in the building sector can lead to significant energy savings and carbon dioxide emission avoidance. The objective of this study is the detailed investigation of a biomass-driven absorption heat pump for heating and cooling. The heat pump is practically a single-effect absorption chiller operating with the Lithium-bromide/water solution and it has been properly modified for heating production during the winter. This system is a novel one and its combination with a biomass boiler was examined for the first time, especially for covering both heating and cooling needs. For the present study, a typical building in Athens, Greece, with a 400 m2 floor area is selected to be coupled with the suggested heating/cooling configuration. The analysis was conducted by using TRNSYS software for the estimation of the building’s thermal loads and with the Engineering Equation Solver for determining the heat pump behavior. According to the results, the yearly biomass consumption is found to be 3.76 tons covering a heating demand of 9136 kWh and cooling demand of 8168 kWh. The seasonal energy cooling performance was found to be 0.751, while the seasonal energy heating performance was at 1.307. Moreover, the proposed configuration was found to have economic and environmental benefits compared to conventional units with an oil boiler and heat pump for cooling. Specifically, the present system leads to 10.8% lower operational costs and 4.8% lower primary energy demand, while there are significant amounts of CO2 avoidance.

Heat and flow enhancement is a critical weapon for the design of highly efficient, compact, and cost-effective devices. The objective of this analysis is the detailed examination of the implementation of different fin shapes on the internal side of a tube aiming the heat and flow enhancement. The reference empty tube is examined, while the use of circular, rectangular, and triangular fins is also studied. Different simulations were conducted with a developed computational fluid dynamic model, and the results were expressed in heat and flow terms. The developed model was validated by comparing the results with the theoretical expressions for the Nusselt number, as well as for the friction factor. The obtained results were evaluated by calculating the heat convection coefficient, the pressure drop, the Nusselt number, the friction factor, the pump work, the mean wall temperature, and the Bejan number. According to the calculations, the use of rectangular fins is the best solution; the use of triangular fins is the second choice, while the less efficient improvement method is the use of circular internal fins. Regarding the heat transfer enhancement, the rectangular fins lead to 36% enhancement, circular fins to 25%, and triangular fins to 23% compared to the reference tube.

The purpose of this simulation study is the examination of a solar-driven power cycle that is driven by collectors with evacuated tubes. The power cycle is an organic Rankine cycle (ORC) that works with cyclopentane. The novelty of the cycle is the use of reheating in order to enhance its thermodynamic efficiency, while the cycle also has a recuperator. Moreover, the cycle is compared with the conventional ORC in order to determine the performance enhancement with the examined idea. The analysis is done with a developed program in Engineering Equation Solver and both in steady-state and transient conditions for a typical year. The analysis was conducted in terms of energy and economic performance. According to an optimization procedure for maximizing the net present values of the investment, it is found that the novel design leads to a net present value of 68 k€, a simple payback of 10 years, and a yearly energy efficiency of 7.0%, while the respective values for the conventional ORC are 44 k€, 10.8 years, and 5.1% for its optimal design according to the net present values maximization. Thus, it is obvious that the suggested design increases both energy and financial performance, compared to the usual design.

The objective of this investigation is to present a novel concept for the optimum exploitation of volatile electricity from renewable energy sources. The idea of the Carnot battery is extended to a general concept for trigeneration which can be called “power to XYZ”. This idea is applied for the building sector where there are needs for cooling production, space-heating production/domestic hot water production and electricity. More specifically, volatile electricity feeds a multi-stage heat pump that produces cold storage at 0 °C for cooling, medium heating storage at 50 °C for space heating and high thermal storage at around 115 °C for future utilization in an organic Rankine cycle for electricity production. The storage is performed in three different temperature levels, with latent storage proposed for proper long-term and efficient storage. The use of ice is suggested especially for cold storage in order to make the design a cost-effective one. This work is a theoretical preliminary thermodynamic analysis performed with a model created in Engineering Equation Solver. The results indicate the system’s maximum exergy efficiency is found at 45.28%, while the respective energy efficiency is found at 322.16%. Moreover, this work includes parametric studies and calculations about the operating margins of the suggested system.

The objective of the present study is the detailed investigation and optimization of a transcritical organic Rankine cycle operating with CO2. The novelty of the present system is that the CO2 is warmed up inside a solar parabolic trough collector and there is not a secondary circuit between the solar collector and the CO2. Therefore, the examined configuration presents increased performance due to the higher operating temperatures of the working fluid in the turbine inlet. The system is studied parametrically and it is optimized by investigating different pressure and temperature level in the turbine inlet. The simulation is performed with a validated mathematical model that has been developed in Engineering Equation Solver software. According to the results, the optimum turbine inlet temperature is ranged from 713 up to 847 K, while the higher pressure in the turbine inlet enhances electricity production. In the default scenario (turbine inlet at 800 K and turbine pressure at 200 bar), the system efficiency is found 24.27% with solar irradiation at 800 W/m2. A dynamic investigation of the system for Athens (Greece) climate proved that the yearly efficiency of the unit is 19.80%, the simple payback period of the investment is 7.88 years, and the yearly CO2 emissions avoidance is 48.7 tones.

Cavity receivers are the most usual design in solar dish concentrators in order to achieve high thermal performance. The objective of this work is the investigation of five different cavity receivers under different operating temperature levels and the selection of the most appropriate designs. More specifically, the examined cavities have the following shapes: cylindrical, rectangular, spherical, conical and cylindrical-conical. All the cavities are optimized in order to determine the best design which maximizes the thermal efficiency of the solar collector. The optimization variables are different for every design and they regard the cavity length, the cone angle and the distance from the concentrator base. According to the results, the best design is the novel one with cylindrical-conical shape, while the conical and the spherical are the next choices. The worst design is rectangular, while the cylindrical is the fourth design in the performance sequence. For operation at 300 °C, the cylindrical-conical design is found to have 67.95% thermal efficiency, 35.73% exergy efficiency while the optical efficiency is 85.42%. The analysis is conducted with a developed model in SolidWorks Flow Simulation which is validated with literature experimental data. The objective of the present study is the parametric investigation of a ground source heat pump for space heating purposes with boreholes. The working fluid in the heat pump is CO2, and the geothermal field includes boreholes with vertical heat exchangers (U-tube). This study is conducted with a developed model in Engineering Equation Solver which is validated with data from the literature. Ten different parameters are investigated and more specifically five parameters about the heat pump cycle and five parameters for the geothermal unit. The heat pump’s examined parameters are the high pressure, the heat exchanger effectiveness, the temperature level in the heater outlet, the flow rate of the geothermal fluid in the evaporator and the heat exchanger thermal transmittance in the evaporator. The other examined parameters about the geothermal unit are the ground mean temperature, the grout thermal conductivity, the inner diameter of the U-tube, the number of the boreholes and the length of every borehole. In the nominal design, it is found that the system’s coefficient of performance is 4.175, the heating production is 10 kW, the electricity consumption is 2.625 kW, and the heat input from the geothermal field is 10.23 kW. The overall resistance of the borehole per length is 0.08211 mK/W, while there are 4 boreholes with borehole length at 50 m. The parametric analysis shows the influence of the ten examined parameters on the system’s performance and on the geothermal system characteristics. This work can be used as a reference study for the design and the investigation of future geothermal-driven CO2 heat pumps.

The objective of the present work is the investigation of a novel polygeneration system for power, refrigeration and heating production at two temperature levels. The present system uses CO2 as the working fluid, which is an environmentally friendly fluid. The total configuration is a combination of a transcritical refrigeration cycle coupled to a Brayton cycle with recompression, which is fed by a biomass boiler. The examined system, at nominal operating conditions, produces refrigeration at 5 °C, and heating at 45 °C and 80 °C. Additionally, the system can be converted into a trigeneration system where the two heating outputs are produced at the same temperature level. The system was studied parametrically by changing the following seven critical parameters: turbine inlet temperature, high pressure, medium pressure, heat exchanger effectiveness, refrigeration temperature, heat rejection temperature and high heating temperature. In nominal operating conditions, the system energy and exergy efficiencies were 78.07% and 26.29%, respectively. For a heat input of 100 kW, the net power production was 24.50 kW, the refrigeration production was 30.73 kW, while the low and high heating production was 9.24 kW and 13.60 kW, respectively. The analysis was conducted with a developed model in Engineering Equation Solver.

The objective of the present work is the study of different thermal storage systems for a solar-fed organic Rankine cycle (ORC) system that operates with parabolic trough collectors. The conventional design with sensible thermal oil storage is compared with a storage configuration with thermal oil and ceramic rocks, as well as the use of latent storage with phase change materials (PCMs) is investigated. The initial system is studied parametrically, and it is properly designed to order for the cycle to have high performance. Different organic fluids are studied in the organic Rankine cycle and different rocks are investigated as storage materials. Toluene is found to be the best candidate in the cycle and ceramic rocks are found to be the best candidate energetically and financially. The final results proved that both the thermal oil–ceramic rocks and the PCM are better technologies than the simple sensible thermal oil storage. For the design with a 180 m2 collecting area and 8 m3 storage tank volume, the thermal oil–ceramic rocks design leads to 13.89% system efficiency and net present value (NPV) to 129.73 k€, the PCM storage to 13.97% and 128.66 k€, respectively, while the pure thermal oil case leads to 12.48% and 105.32 k€, respectively. Moreover, it is useful to state that when the collecting area is varied from 160 m2 to 200 m2 with the tank volume at 8 m3, the efficiency enhancement with ceramic rocks compared to pure oil ranges from 8.99% up to 12.39%, while the enhancement with PCM ranges from 7.96% to 13.26%. For the same conditions, the NPV is improved with ceramic rocks from 18.35% to 25.79%, while with PCM from 14.17% to 25.29%.

The parabolic trough solar collector (PTC) is the most mature solar concentrating technology, and this technology is applied in numerous thermal applications. Usually, the thermal efficiency of the PTC is expressed with the aid of polynomial expressions. However, there is not a universal expression that is applied in all cases with high accuracy. Many studies use expressions with the first-degree polynomial, second-degree, or fourth-degree polynomial expressions. In this direction, this work is a study that investigates different expressions about the thermal efficiency of a PTC with a systematic approach. The LS-2 PTC module is examined with a developed numerical model in the Engineering Equation Solver for different operating temperatures and solar beam irradiation levels. This model is validated using experimental literature data. The found data are approximated with various polynomial expressions with up to six unknown parameters in every case. In every case, the mean absolute percentage error and the R2 are calculated. According to the final results, the use of the third power term leads to the best fitting results, as well as the use of the temperature difference term (ΔΤ), something that is new according to the existing literature. More specifically, the final suggested formula has the following format: “ηcol = a0 + a3∙ΔT3/Gb + b∙ΔΤ”. The results of this work can be used by the scientists for the optimum fitting of the PTC efficiency curves and for applying the best formulas in performance determination studies.

The objective of this study is the investigation of different solar concentrating collectors for application in a trigeneration system. Parabolic trough collectors, linear Fresnel reflectors and solar dishes are the examined solar concentrating technologies in this work. The trigeneration unit includes an organic Rankine cycle coupled with an absorption heat machine that operates with LiBr/water. The analysis is performed throughout the year by using the weather data of Athens in Greece. The results of this work indicate that the selection of parabolic trough collectors is the best choice because it leads to the maximum yearly system energy efficiency of 64.40% and to the minimum simple payback period of 6.25 years. The second technology is the solar dish with the energy efficiency of 62.41% and the simple payback period of 6.95 years, while the linear Fresnel reflector is the less efficient technology with the energy efficiency of 35.78% and with a simple payback period of 10.92 years. Lastly, it must be stated that the thermodynamic investigation of the system is performed with a created model in Engineering Equation Solver, while the dynamic analysis is performed with a code in the programming language FORTRAN.

The refrigeration systems with CO2 seem to be attractive choices for the design of refrigeration systems with small environmental impact. The objective of this work is the comparison of different transcritical CO2 refrigeration systems and the determination of the most promising configurations. A typical system (evaporator, compressor, gas cooler, expansion valve) is the reference system and it is compared with a system with internal heat exchanger, a parallel compression system, a two-stage compression system and a system with mechanical subcooling after the gas collector. The examined systems produce refrigeration at one temperature level and they are examined for various operation scenarios. More specifically, the refrigeration temperature is examined from −35 °C to +5 °C, while the condenser temperature (or the gas cooler outlet temperature) from 35 °C to 50 °C. The analysis is conducted with developed models in Engineering Equation Solver (EES). According to the results, all the examined systems are more efficient than the reference system for all the examined scenarios. The system with the mechanical subcooling and the two-stage compression system are found to be the most efficient choices with a mean coefficient of performance enhancement at 75.8% and 49.8% respectively. The recent regulation concerning the ban of the hydro-fluorocarbon (HFC) refrigerants has led to the employment of environmentally friendly solutions for refrigeration. Systems that employ CO2 seem to be a viable option which is compatible with the current legislation. The objective of the present work is the investigation of ten different refrigeration systems with CO2 and to compare them with a conventional system with R404A in energetic terms. The analysis is conducted on an annual basis by using the measured energy consumptions and loads for an existing system with R404A. Except for the refrigeration system comparison, a model for the prediction of the hourly refrigeration loads of the existing supermarket is developed using experimental results. This model is applied for the yearly evaluation of the proposed CO2 refrigeration systems. The examined CO2 system configurations include a simple booster system, a system with parallel compression, a system with parallel compression and overfed evaporators in the medium temperature, a system with parallel compression and overfed evaporators in both medium and low temperature, a system similar to the last one with the addition of an intercooler after the low temperature compressors, and all the aforementioned systems with the addition of a mechanical subcooling cycle after the gas cooler. According to the final results, the most promising configuration is the one with parallel compression, overfed evaporators in medium and low temperature, intercooler and mechanical subcooling, which leads to 8.53% yearly electricity savings compared to the conventional R404A system. Moreover, it is important to state that the simple booster CO2 system is found to be less efficient than the conventional R404A system with 15.23% higher yearly electricity consumption. This article presents a simulation study which focuses on the thermodynamic analysis of a solar-driven trigeneration system for heating, cooling, and electricity production. The system uses parabolic trough collectors operating with Therminol VP-1 for feeding an organic Rankine cycle operating with toluene and an absorption heat pump operating with a LiBr–H2O working pair. The collecting area is selected at 100 m2 and the storage tank at 4 m3. The system is studied parametrically in order to examine the impact of various parameters on the system energy efficiency, system exergy efficiency, electricity production, heating production, and cooling production in the simple payback period of the investment. The examined parameters are the following: solar beam irradiation level, solar beam irradiation angle, superheating degree in the turbine inlet, pressure level in the turbine inlet, heat source temperature level, generator temperature level, and the heat input in the generator. For the nominal case of a 15 kW generator input, the electricity production is 6.3 kW, the heating production 11.5 kW, and the cooling production 10.7 kW. The system energy efficiency is 40.7%, while the system exergy efficiency is 12.7%. The financial investigation of the investment proved that it is viable with the simple payback period to be 8.1 years in the nominal case and it can be reduced to 7.8 years with an optimization procedure. Lastly, it has to be said that the examined system is found to be a viable configuration which is an ideal choice for application in the building sector. The analysis was conducted under steady-state conditions with a model developed using Engineering Equation Solver (EES).

The utilization of solar irradiation in the building sector is vital to create sustainable systems. Trigeneration systems are highly efficient systems that usually produce electricity, heating and cooling which are the main energy needs in the buildings. The objective of this work is the energetic and financial investigation of three different solar-driven trigeneration systems that can be applied in buildings with high energy needs (e.g., hospitals or commercial buildings). The parabolic trough solar collector (PTC) is selected to be used because it is the most mature solar concentrating technology. The examined configurations practically are different combinations of organic Rankine cycle (ORC) with heat pumps. System 1 includes a PTC coupled to an ORC which feeds an absorption heat pump machine. System 2 includes a PTC which simultaneously feeds an ORC and absorption machine. System 3 includes a PTC which feeds an ORC and a heat exchanger for heating, while the ORC is fed with and electricity a vapor compression cycle for cooling production. The simple payback period of System 1 is 5.62 years and it is the lowest, with System 2 to have 7.82 years and System 3 to have 8.49 years. The energy efficiency of the three systems is 78.17%, 43.30% and 37.45%, respectively, while the exergy efficiency 15.94%, 13.08% and 12.25%, respectively. System 1 is the best configuration according to energy, exergy and financial analysis. This study is performed with developed thermodynamic models in Engineering Equation Solver and a dynamic model in FORTRAN.

The objective of this work is the financial optimization of a solar-driven organic Rankine cycle. Parabolic trough solar collectors are used as the most mature solar concentrating system and also there is a sensible storage system. The unit is examined for the location of Athens in Greece for operation during the year. The analysis is conducted with a developed dynamic model in the program language FORTRAN. Moreover, a developed thermodynamic model in Engineering Equation Solver has been used in order to determine the nominal efficiency of the cycle. The system is optimized with various financial criteria, as well as with energy criteria. The optimization variables are the collecting area and the storage tank volume, while the nominal power production is selected at 10 kW. According to the final results, the minimum payback period is 8.37 years and it is found for a 160 m2 collecting area and a 14 m3 storage tank, while for the same design point the levelized cost of electricity is minimized at 0.0969 € kWh−1. The maximum net present value is 123 k€ and it is found for a 220-m2 collecting area and a 14-m3 storage tank volume. Moreover, the maximum system energy efficiency is found at 15.38%, and, in this case, the collecting area is 140 m2 and the storage tank volume 12 m3. Lastly, a multi-objective optimization proved that the overall optimum case is for a 160-m2 collecting area and a 14-m3 storage tank.

The objective of this paper is the comparison of two dedicated subcooling methods, after the gas cooler, in a CO2 transcritical refrigeration system. The use of vapor compression refrigeration with R134a for subcooling is the first method, and the second is the use of an absorption chiller that operates with a LiBr-H2O working pair. The examined systems are compared energetically and exegetically with the reference transcritical CO2 refrigeration cycle without subcooling. The analysis is conducted for different operating scenarios and in every case, the system is optimized by selecting the proper temperature and pressure levels. The analysis is performed with a developed and validated model in Engineering Equation Solver. According to the final results, the use of the absorption chiller is able to decrease the system electricity consumption by about 54% compared to the simple transcritical cycle, while the decrease with the mechanical subcooling is 41%. Both systems with dedicated subcooling are found to have an important increase in the system exergy performance compared to the simple transcritical cycle. However, the system with the mechanical subcooling is found to be the best choice exegetically, with a small difference from the system with the absorption chiller.

The objective of this work is the comparison of the different cascade refrigeration systems with CO2 in the low-temperature circuit. A total of 18 different cascade refrigeration systems are examined including the CO2/CO2 cascade system. The analysis is performed for four different evaporator temperatures (−35, −25, −15 and −5 °C), while the condenser temperature is ranged from 10 up to 45 °C. The systems are compared energetically, as well as using the total equivalent warming impact (TEWI) for yearly operation at the weather conditions of Athens (Greece). The final results show that all the examined cascade systems are more efficient than the CO2/CO2 cascade system. The natural refrigerants (NH3, R290, R600, R600a and R1270) seem to be the most appropriate choices according to the energy and the TEWI criteria. Moreover, the refrigerant R152a is a promising choice for achieving high performance with a relatively low TEWI.

Energy consumption in the building sector is responsible for a very large amount of electricity consumption worldwide. The reduction of this consumption is a crucial issue in order to achieve sustainability. The objective of this work is to investigate the use of phase change materials (PCMs) in the building walls in order to reduce the heating and the cooling loads. The novelty of this work is based on the investigation of different scenarios about the position of the PCM layer in the south and the north walls. PCMs can improve the thermal performance and the thermal comfort of a building due to their ability to store large amounts of thermal energy in latent form and so to reduce the temperature fluctuations of the structural components, keeping them within the desired temperature levels. More specifically, this work presents and compares the heating loads, the cooling loads and the temperature distribution of a building in Athens (Greece), with and without PCMs in different positions in the south wall and in the north walls. The simulation is performed with the commercial software TRNSYS 17, using the TRNSYS component: type 1270 (PCM Wall). The results proved that the maximum energy savings per year were achieved by the combination of the insulation and the PCM layer in the north and south walls. More specifically, the reductions in the heating and the cooling loads were found to be 1.54% and 5.90%, respectively. Furthermore, the temperature distribution with the use of a PCM layer is the most acceptable, especially during the summer period.

Heat pumps are efficient and well-established technologies for providing the proper cooling load in the building sector. The objective of this work is the parametric investigation of a heat pump operating with the promising refrigerant R152a for different operating conditions. More specifically, the heat pump is studied for different ambient temperatures, different indoor temperatures and various compressor rotational speeds. The cooling capacity and the coefficient of performance (COP) are the most important parameters which calculated in every scenario. A detailed model is developed in Engineering Equations Solver (EES) and it is validated with literature data. According to the final results, the system can operate in nominal conditions with 5 kW cooling capacity and a COP equal to 6.46. It is found that the COP can be ranged from 4 to 12 and the cooling capacity, while the cooling capacity can reach up to 9 kW. Moreover, a regression equation about the performance of the system is suggested. The obtained results indicate that the use of the R152a leads to high performance and so it can be an environmentally friendly choice for the cooling systems.

The most important parameter in the design of the building envelope is the insulation thickness, because it dramatically influences the heating and cooling loads. The objective of this study is the investigation of different insulation scenarios for the four climate zones of Greece and, more specifically, the cities Heraklion, Athens, Thessaloniki, and Florina. The insulation thickness is examined up to 8 cm and the optimum thickness is determined by the minimization of the simple payback period in order to design a cost-effective system. Moreover, the primary energy consumption, the heating/cooling loads, and the equivalent CO2 emissions are calculated. Furthermore, a multi-objective evaluation procedure of the various insulated scenarios is conducted in order to show the relationship between the energetic and the financial optimization. Generally, it is found that the optimum insulation thickness is around 4 cm for all the climate zones using financial criteria, while the energy criteria indicate higher thicknesses. These results can be applied to the suitable design of Greek residential buildings.

The thermal enhancement of parabolic trough collectors is a critical issue and numerous ideas have been applied in the literature on this domain. The objective of this paper is to investigate some usual thermal enhancement techniques for improving the performance of evacuated and non-evacuated receivers of parabolic trough solar collectors. More specifically, the use of twisted tape inserts, perforated plate inserts, and internally finned absorbers are compared with the reference case of the smooth absorber. The analysis is conducted with a developed and validated thermal model in Engineering Equation Solver. The collector is investigated for a typical flow rate of 100 L/min and for inlet temperatures between 50 °C and 350 °C with Syltherm 800 as working fluid. According to the final results, the use of internally finned absorber leads to the highest thermal efficiency enhancement, which is up to 2.1% for the non-evacuated collector and up to 1.6% for the evacuated tube collector. The perforated plate inserts and the twisted tape inserts were found to lead to lower enhancements, which are up to 1.8% and 1.5%, respectively, for the non-evacuated collector, while they are up to 1.4% and 1.2%, respectively, for the evacuated collector. Moreover, the pressure drop increase with the use of the thermal enhancement methods is investigated and the use of internally finned absorber is found again to be the superior technique with the performance evaluation criterion to be ranged from 1.5 to 1.8 for this case.

The objective of this work was to optimize and to evaluate a solar-driven trigeneration system which operates with nanofluid-based parabolic trough collectors. The trigeneration system includes an organic Rankine cycle (ORC) and an absorption heat pump operating with LiBr-H2O which is powered by the rejected heat of the ORC. Toluene, n-octane, Octamethyltrisiloxane (MDM) and cyclohexane are the examined working fluids in the ORC. The use of CuO and Al2O3 nanoparticles in the Syltherm 800 (base fluid) is investigated in the solar field loop. The analysis is performed with Engineering Equation Solver (EES) under steady state conditions in order to give the emphasis in the exergetic optimization of the system. Except for the different working fluid investigation, the system is optimized by examining three basic operating parameters in all the cases. The pressure in the turbine inlet, the temperature in the ORC condenser and the nanofluid concentration are the optimization variables. According to the final results, the combination of toluene in the ORC with the CuO nanofluid is the optimum choice. The global maximum exergetic efficiency is 24.66% with pressure ratio is equal to 0.7605, heat rejection temperature 113.7 °C and CuO concentration 4.35%.
