Nitrogen is the most commonly managed mineral nutrient in olive groves because it is essential for plant growth. The precise management of N fertilization in olive cultivation is still not fully clarified, but it is essential for providing sustainable production. A nitrogen fertilizer experiment with olive trees (cv. Kalinioti) was carried out over a six-year period. Seven levels of nitrogen fertilizer given as ammonium nitrate (control, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 kg/tree) were annually applied in order to determine the effect of nitrogen on vegetative growth, fruit set, fruit weight, yield, maturation index, and leaf N, P, and K concentrations. The results indicate that, under these conditions, application of up to 4 kg NH4NO3/tree significantly increased yield to 62.5 kg/tree compared to the control (37.09 kg/tree). The positive effect was attributed to the initial and final fruit set increases (7.63 and 3.73%, respectively at 4 kg NH4NO3/tree). However, the weight of 100 olives (W100 = 331 g) at 4 kg NH4NO3/tree obtained during harvest was considerably lower compared to the control (W100 = 384 g). Higher nitrogen rates decreased yield while increasing overall shoot growth. Nitrogen fertilization did not significantly influence the oil content of olive fruit. Fruit weight, maturation index, and concentration of oil reached maximum levels in the beginning of December, indicating a suitable start to olive harvesting. The concentration of N in olive leaves increased from 1.23% to 2.38% as fertilizer levels increased from 0 to 6 kg NH4NO3. Maximum yield was achieved at a level of 6 kg NH4NO3/tree, which corresponded to 2.01% N in leaves. The results suggest that application of 3 kg NH4NO3/tree can be recommended for table olive production, due to the fact that fruit weight was not decreased, while fertilization with 4 kg NH4NO3/tree was suitable for oil olives.

Background: The effect of substrate and strain on the nutritional and functional properties of mushroom flours and protein concentrates (PCs) has not thoroughly been investigated. Methods: The proteins of P. ostreatus flours (strains AMRL144 and 150) were isolated following alkaline extraction (pH 12) and isoelectric precipitation (pH 4) as it was determined by the solubility curves. The protein quality of the flours and PCs were evaluated by determining the protein solubility index (PSI) and their functional properties, such as water (WAC) and oil absorption capacity (OAC), foam capacity (FC), foam stability (FS) and emulsion stability (ES). The amino acid (AA) composition of the flours was determined by reversed-phase liquid chromatography after protein hydrolysis and o-phthalaldehyde derivatization. Results: The PSIs of the flours and PCs of P. ostreatus were comparable to those of soy protein flours and protein concentrates. The highest AA concentration was found for both strains when cultivated on the barley and oat straw (BOS) substrate, showing a similar trend as the protein content. A principal component analysis (PCA) indicated an impact of the strain on the functional properties. Conclusions: Both strains can produce high quality proteins especially when cultivated on wheat straw (WS). The FS was positively correlated with the P. ostreatus strain AMRL150 whereas the FC was positively correlated with AMRL144.

Primary Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection manifests with diverse clinical symptoms, occasionally resulting in severe complications. This scoping review investigates the rare occurrence of acute acalculous cholecystitis (AAC) in the context of primary EBV infection, with a focus on understanding its prevalence, clinical features, and underlying mechanisms. The study also explores EBV infection association with Gilbert syndrome, a condition that potentially exacerbates the clinical picture. Additionally, a case report of an 18-year-old female presenting with AAC and ascites secondary to EBV infection enhances the review. A comprehensive literature review was conducted, analyzing reported cases of AAC secondary to EBV infection. This involved examining patient demographics, clinical presentations, laboratory findings, and outcomes. The search yielded 44 cases, predominantly affecting young females. Common clinical features included fever, cervical lymphadenopathy, tonsillitis/pharyngitis, and splenomegaly. Laboratory findings highlighted significant hepatic involvement. The review also noted a potential link between AAC in EBV infection and Gilbert syndrome, particularly in cases with abnormal bilirubin levels. AAC is a rare but significant complication of primary EBV infection, primarily observed in young females, and may be associated with Gilbert syndrome. This comprehensive review underscores the need for heightened clinical awareness and timely diagnosis to manage this complication effectively.

Patients undergoing complex percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) are at an increased risk of atherothrombotic complications. Although dual antiplatelet therapy is the mainstay of treatment for patients undergoing PCI with stent implantation, deciding its type and duration in complex PCI patients has long been considered a challenge for clinicians. This is because the beneficial effects of prolonged treatment and/or more potent antiplatelet agents’ use in preventing ischemic events are hindered by a concomitant increase in bleeding complications. The aim of this review is to highlight current evidence regarding the optimal antithrombotic therapy regimens used in complex PCI patients, focusing on the evaluation of both safety and efficacy outcomes as well as addressing future perspectives.

Given that patients with prior myocardial infarction and features of high ischemic and low bleeding risk may benefit by extending dual antiplatelet therapy beyond 1 year, we aimed of assessing platelet reactivity provided by ticagrelor 60 mg bid versus prasugrel 5 mg od in 20 such patients participating in a randomized, crossover study. The primary end point of platelet reactivity at the end of the two treatment periods (by VerifyNow, in PRU) was significantly lower for ticagrelor (31.9 PRU [95% CI 12.3–51.4]) compared with prasugrel (132.1 PRU [111.9–152.3]) with a least squares mean difference of –100.2 PRU (72.1–128.3, P < .001). This dedicated pharmacodynamic study showed that in post-myocardial infarction patients with high atherothrombotic risk and receiving P2Y12 receptor antagonist beyond 1 year, low-dose ticagrelor results in a significantly lower platelet reactivity compared to low-dose prasugrel.

The aim of this review is to describe the chromatographic, spectrometric, and spectroscopic techniques applied to honey for the determination of botanical and geographical origin and detection of adulteration. Based on the volatile profile of honey and using Solid Phase microextraction-Gas chromatography-Mass spectrometry (SPME-GC-MS) analytical technique, botanical and geographical characterization of honey can be successfully determined. In addition, the use of vibrational spectroscopic techniques, in particular, infrared (IR) and Raman spectroscopy, are discussed as a tool for the detection of honey adulteration and verification of its botanical and geographical origin. Manipulation of the obtained data regarding all the above-mentioned techniques was performed using chemometric analysis. This article reviews the literature between 2007 and 2020.

Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) has gained popularity in the wine sector due to its simplicity and ability to provide a wine’s fingerprint. For this reason, it is often used for authentication and traceability purposes with more than satisfactory results. In this review, an outline of the reasons why authenticity and traceability are important to the wine sector is given, along with a brief overview of the analytical methods used for their attainment; statistical issues and compounds, on which authentication usually is based, are discussed. Moreover, insight on the mode of action of FT-IR is given, along with successful examples from its use in different areas of interest for classification. Finally, prospects and challenges for suggested future research are given. For more accurate and effective analyses, the construction of a large database consisting of wines from different regions, varieties and winemaking protocols is suggested.

Background: Low (or poor) responder patients are women who require large doses of stimulation medications and produce less than an optimal number of oocytes during IVF cycles. Low responder patients produce few oocytes and embryos, which significantly reduces their chances for success in a preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) cycle. Accumulation of vitrified oocytes or embryos before the actual PGD cycle is a possible strategy that might increase patient’s chances for a healthy pregnancy. Aim of the study: This retrospective study evaluates the efficacy of a PGD program in low responder patients after repeated ovarian stimulation cycles with cumulative vitrification of oocytes and embryos. Methods: Over a period of 30 months, 13 patients entering the PGD program were identified as poor responders after their first ovarian stimulation. These patients started a PGD cycle for one of the following indications: history of recurrent implantation failure (n=1), cystic fibrosis (n=1), X-linked microtubular myopathy (n=1), recurrent miscarriages (n=5), Duchene muscular dystrophy (n=1), chromosomal translocation (n=1) and high sperm aneuploidy (n=1). After multiple ovarian hormonal stimulations patients had either all mature oocytes (Group A; 3 patients) or all of their day 2 embryos vitrified (group B; 10 patients). Mean total number of oocyte collections per patient was 2.3 (range: 2 - 5 cycles). Results: In the actual PGD cycle, all vitrified oocytes from group A patients were warmed and underwent intra cytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) followed by culture up to day 3. For group B patients all vitrified day 2 embryos were warmed and cultured overnight. On day 3 of culture, all embryos from Group A and B had blastomere biopsy followed by genetic analysis. In group A, 20 embryos were found suitable for biopsy and genetic analysis; at least one healthy embryo was available for transfer for each patient. For group B, 72 embryos in total were available for biopsy and PGD. All patients, except one, had at least one healthy day 5 embryo for transfer (mean number of 2.1 embryos per transfer). Nine patients had a clinical pregnancy; 7 patients delivered a healthy baby. Conclusion: Low responder patients entering a PGD program might increase their chances for a healthy pregnancy by repeat ovarian stimulation in combination with cumulative oocyte or embryo vitrification.
