Objective: To assess the effect of hysteroscopic polypectomy on the in vitro fertilization (IVF) results in infertile women with at least one prior negative IVF outcome. Methods: This retrospective cohort study included women who had attended the "2nd Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens" and "Iaso" Maternity Hospital from October 2019 to January 2023 for infertility treatment. The medical records of 345 women aged 18–45 years old without abnormal findings in hysterosalpingography (HSG) and with at least one previous failed IVF procedure were analyzed. The male factor was excluded, as well as a prior hysteroscopic removal of polyps. In 67 women, polyps were suspected during initial two-dimensional ultrasound (2D-US) examination. The final sample of the study comprised 40 patients, in which endometrial polyps were removed by hysteroscopy with the use of resectoscope. All patients underwent ovarian stimulation and IVF in the consecutive cycle using a short GnRh antagonist protocol. Main Results: After hysteroscopic polypectomy, 29 (72.5%) out of 40 patients had a positive pregnancy result: 26 (65%) clinical and 3 (7.5%) biochemical pregnancies were documented. There was a statistically significant difference between the number of clinical pregnancies before and after polypectomy (p < 0.001), as well as between the total number of pregnancies (p < 0.001). Secondary Results: Women with positive outcome were significantly younger and had significantly lower FSH levels (p < 0.007). They also had significantly higher AMH (p < 0.009) and peak estradiol levels (p < 0.013) and yielded more M II oocytes (p < 0.009) and embryos (p < 0.002). Conclusions: Hysteroscopic polypectomy in women with a suspected endometrial polyp using 2D ultrasound and a history of prior failed IVF attempt improves IVF outcomes in terms of the clinical and total number of pregnancies. Galectin-3 belongs to a family of soluble glycan-binding proteins, which are increasingly recognized as modulators of pregnancy-associated processes, including proper placental development. Gestational hypertension and preeclampsia are significant complications of pregnancy, affecting millions of women annually. Despite their prevalence, the underlying pathophysiological mechanisms remain poorly understood. Several theories have been proposed, including inflammation, placental insufficiency, disturbed placental invasion, and angiogenesis. The Scopus and PubMed/MEDLINE databases were utilized until the end of May 2024. In total, 11 articles with 1011 patients, with 558 in the control group and 453 in the preeclampsia group, were included. Seven articles investigated the expression of galectin-3 (Gal-3) in placental tissue samples, eight studies calculated the serum levels of Gal-3 in maternal blood samples, while one study referred to the possible correlation of galectin-3 levels in umbilical cord blood. The results were inconsistent in both the placental tissue and maternal serum; Gal-3 placental expression was found to be statistically increased in five studies compared to that in women without gestational hypertensive disorders, while two studies either mentioned decreased expression or no difference. Similarly, the Gal-3 maternal serum levels, compared to those in women without gestational hypertensive disorders, were found to be statistically increased in five studies, while three studies did not find any statistical difference. Gal-3 can play a crucial role in the pathogenesis of preeclampsia, and its expression is influenced by gestational age and placental insufficiency. A further investigation ought to be conducted to enlighten the correlation of Gal-3 with gestational hypertension and preeclampsia development. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Calcifying odontogenic cyst (COC) is a relatively uncommon cyst of odontogenic origin, occurring in the second decade of life, with no jaw predilection. Radiographically, it typically appears as a well‐defined unilocular radiolucency containing irregular calcifications of varying size and opacity. Treatment consists of conservative surgical excisions with low recurrence rates. The purpose of this paper is to report a rare case of late COC recurrence and review the pertinent literature. A 42‐year‐old female patient presented for evaluation of a painless swelling in the palate, which had been present for 5 years with a gradual, slow increase in dimensions. Twenty years before, a lesion at the same site was surgically excised with a diagnosis of COC. Clinical examination revealed a hard‐in‐consistency swelling in the anterior segment of the hard palate. Radiographically, a radiopaque lesion with an irregular outline was noticed in the left palate adjacent to the left maxillary canine and first premolar, along with a well‐defined radiolucent lesion between the maxillary central incisors. Both lesions were surgically excised, and histopathological examination revealed that the main lesion in the left palate was consistent with recurrent COC, while the lesion between the central incisors was compatible with a nasopalatine duct cyst. Even though the recurrence rate of COC is low, estimated at 3.4% based on our review of the relevant English‐language literature, the current case highlights the possibility of a late recurrence, even several years after the initial diagnosis and treatment, and therefore the need for long‐term follow‐up. Visceral leishmaniasis (VL), often referred to as kala-azar, is quite rare in developed countries during pregnancy. Only few studies have evaluated its impact on perinatal outcome. It is caused primarily by Leishmania donovani or Leishmania infantum and presents with a wide spectrum of clinical manifestations from cutaneous ulcers to multisystem disease. Differential diagnosis is challenging as symptoms and signs are insidious, mimicking other diseases. Misdiagnosis can result in severe adverse perinatal outcomes, even maternal/neonatal death. Early treatment with liposomal amphotericin-B (LAmB) is currently the first choice with adequate effectiveness. We report a rare case of VL in a twin pregnancy with onset at the second trimester, presenting with periodic fever with rigors, right flank pain, and gradual dysregulation of all three cell lines. The positive rK39 enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay test confirmed the diagnosis. Treatment with LAmB resulted in clinical improvement within 48 h and in the delivery of two late-preterm healthy neonates with no symptoms or signs of vertical transmission. The one-year follow-up, of the mother and the neonates, was negative for recurrence. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of VL in a twin pregnancy, and consequently treatment and perinatal outcome are of great importance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Primary dysmenorrhea is considered to be one of the most common gynecological complaints, affecting women's daily activities and social life. The severity of dysmenorrhea varies among women, and its management is of high importance for them. Given that non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), the established treatment for dysmenorrhea, are associated with many adverse events, alternative therapeutic options are under evaluation. Emerging evidence correlates management of dysmenorrhea with micronutrients, especially vitamins. Purpose: The aim of this narrative review is to highlight and provide evidence of the potential benefits of vitamins for the management of dysmenorrhea. Methods: The articles were searched on PubMed, Scopus and Google Scholar. The searching process was based on keywords, such as "primary dysmenorrhea", "vitamins", "supplementation", "vitamin D", "vitamin E" and others. Our search focused on data derived from clinical trials, published only during the last decade (older articles were excluded). Results: In this review, 13 clinical trials were investigated. Most of them supported the anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and analgesic properties of vitamins. Particularly, vitamins D and E revealed a desirable effect on dysmenorrhea relief Conclusion: Despite the scarcity and heterogeneity of related research, the studies indicate a role of vitamins for the management of primary dysmenorrhea, proposing that they should be considered as alternative therapeutic candidates for clinical use.
