Wireless communications and sensing have notably advanced thanks to the recent developments in both software and hardware. Although various modulation schemes have been proposed to efficiently use the limited frequency resources by exploiting several degrees of freedom, antenna performance is essentially governed by frequency only. Here, we present a new antenna design concept based on metasurfaces to manipulate antenna performances in response to the time width of electromagnetic pulses. We numerically and experimentally show that by using a proper set of spatially arranged metasurfaces loaded with lumped circuits, ordinary omnidirectional antennas can be reconfigured by the incident pulse width to exhibit directional characteristics varying over hundreds of milliseconds or billions of cycles, far beyond conventional performance. We demonstrate that the proposed concept can be applied for sensing, selective reception under simultaneous incidence and mutual communications as the first step to expand existing frequency resources based on pulse width., Comment: 61 pages, 6 figures, 26 supplementary figures

IntroductionPandemic COVID-19 is an unexpected challenge for the oncological community, indicating potential detrimental effects on cancer patients. Our aim was to summarize the converging key points providing a general guidance in order to support decision making, pertaining to the oncologic care in the middle of a global outbreak.MethodsWe did an international online search in twenty five countries that have managed a surge in cancer patient numbers. We collected the recommendations from thirty one medical oncology societies.ResultsBy synthesizing guidelines for a) oncology service delivery adjustments, b) general and specific treatment adaptations, and c) discrepancies from guidelines comparison, we present a clinical synopsis with the forty more crucial statements. A Covid-19 risk stratification base was also created in order to obtain a quick, objective patient assessment and a risk-benefit evaluation on a case-by-case basis.ConclusionsIn an attempt to face these complex needs and due to limited understanding of COVID-19, a variability of recommendations based on general epidemiological and infectious disease principles rather than definite cancer-related evidence has evolved. Additionally, the absence of an effective treatment or vaccine requires the development of cancer management guidance, capitalizing on comprehensive COVID-19 oncology experience globally.

Anisotropic impedance surfaces have been used to control surface wave propagation, which has benefited applications across a variety of fields including radio-frequency (RF) and optical devices, sensing, electromagnetic compatibility, wireless power transfer, and communications. However, the responses of these surfaces are fixed once they are fabricated. Although tunable impedance surfaces have been introduced by utilizing power-dependent nonlinear components, such a tuning mechanism is generally limited to specific applications. Here we propose an additional mechanism to achieve tunable anisotropic impedance surfaces by embedding transient circuits that are controllable via the type of incident waveform. By switching between the open and short states of the circuits, it is possible to separately control the unit-cell impedances in two orthogonal directions, thereby changing from an isotropic impedance surface to an anisotropic impedance surface. Our simulation results show that a short pulse strongly propagates for both x and y directions at 3 GHz. However, when the waveform changes to a continuous wave, the transmittance for x direction is reduced to 26%, although still the transmittance for y direction achieves 77%. Therefore, the proposed metasurfaces are capable of guiding a surface wave in a specific direction based on the incident waveform even with the same power level and at the same frequency. Our study paves new avenues regarding the use of surface wave control in applications ranging from wireless communications to sensing and cloaking devices.

Physics - Optics - Abstract
This paper shows that customised broadband absorption of electromagnetic waves having arbitrary polarisation is possible by use of lossy cut-wire (CW) metamaterials. These useful features are confirmed by numerical simulations in which different lengths of CW pairs are combined as one periodic metamaterial unit and placed near to a perfect electric conductor (PEC). So far metamaterial absorbers have exhibited some interesting features, which are not available from conventional absorbers, e.g. straightforward adjustment of electromagnetic properties and size reduction. The paper shows how with proper design a broad range of absorber characteristics may be obtained., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures, submitted to Optics Express

33. On Galois groups of Salem polynomials

512.32 - Abstract
The primary topic of this thesis is the Galois group of an irreducible Salem polynomial and how the precise structure of the roots of such a polynomial is reflected in its Galois group. The main goal is the proof of the structure of these Galois groups always being a Semidirect product N x G/N. This is a stronger result than is known for reciprocal polynomials in general: [37]. Here N will be a certain normal subgroup of the Galois group, G, of our irreducible Salem polynomial f(x), and G/IN ~ Galois group of the Trace polynomial g(y), for f(x) = xdg(x+ 1/x) and f(x) being of degree 2d. We give here an overview of our work. • In Chapter 1 we give some basic prerequisites for our work and we conclude with the result stated in [19] about the Galois group of a Salem polynomial. • In Chapter 2 we give an introduction on what will follow on the structure of an irreducible Salem polynomial of degree six. • Chapter 3 plays two roles. On the one hand it includes material concerning the structure of the Galois group of an irreducible Salem polynomial of minimum order. On the other hand it demonstrates how the structure of the roots of a Salem polynomial can be used to exclude certain groups from being Galois groups of these polynomials. Here we exclude the Dihedral group. • In Chapter 4 we answer the question of when the smallest order Galois group can occur and what the structure of the Galois field will be in that case. • In Chapter 5 we give some background on group extensions. We conclude with demonstrating how in some cases the Galois group is a Semidirect product and what is preventing us from extending this to every Galois group of an irreducible Salem polynomial. • In Chapter 6 we prove that the Galois group of a degree six irreducible Salem polynomial will always be the Semidirect product stated above. • In Chapter 7 we analyse the Discriminant of these polynomials.

PURPOSE: To describe data on epidemiology, microbiology, clinical characteristics and outcome of adult patients admitted in the intensive care unit (ICU) with secondary peritonitis, with special emphasis on antimicrobial therapy and source control. METHODS: Post hoc analysis of a multicenter observational study (Abdominal Sepsis Study, AbSeS) including 2621 adult ICU patients with intra-abdominal infection in 306 ICUs from 42 countries. Time-till-source control intervention was calculated as from time of diagnosis and classified into 'emergency' (< 2 h), 'urgent' (2-6 h), and 'delayed' (> 6 h). Relationships were assessed by logistic regression analysis and reported as odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI). RESULTS: The cohort included 1077 cases of microbiologically confirmed secondary peritonitis. Mortality was 29.7%. The rate of appropriate empiric therapy showed no difference between survivors and non-survivors (66.4% vs. 61.3%, p = 0.1). A stepwise increase in mortality was observed with increasing Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) scores (19.6% for a value ≤ 4-55.4% for a value > 12, p < 0.001). The highest odds of death were associated with septic shock (OR 3.08 [1.42-7.00]), late-onset hospital-acquired peritonitis (OR 1.71 [1.16-2.52]) and failed source control evidenced by persistent inflammation at day 7 (OR 5.71 [3.99-8.18]). Compared with 'emergency' source control intervention (< 2 h of diagnosis), 'urgent' source control was the only modifiable covariate associated with lower odds of mortality (OR 0.50 [0.34-0.73]). CONCLUSION: 'Urgent' and successful source control was associated with improved odds of survival. Appropriateness of empirical antimicrobial treatment did not significantly affect survival suggesting that source control is more determinative for outcome. TRIAL REGISTRATION: ClinicalTrials.gov NCT03270345.

- Abstract
The nominative, the accusative and the dative have been recently argued to stand in proper containment to one another. In contrast to more traditional decompositions which posited no such containment, this new decomposition has been shown to account for the absence of ABA exponence patterns for this triplet of cases, i.e. for the fact that no rule of exponence applies in both nominative and dative without also applying in the accusative. We point out that, in addition to its desirable predictions regarding *ABA, the more recent decomposition also makes an undesirable prediction about the derivation of ABB patterns, as we show based on data from Indo-European languages. We argue that a third theory—under which the accusative is properly contained within the dative, but the nominative and the accusative do not stand in a containment relation to one another—accounts for all the relevant facts.

In the dynamic landscape of today's digitized markets, organizations harness the power of vast and swiftly accessible data to glean invaluable insights. A significant portion of this data emanates from user behavior on business websites. Unraveling the intricacies of this user behavior has become paramount for businesses, serving as the compass guiding the adaptation and evolution of their digital marketing strategies. Embarking on an exploration of this digital frontier, our study delves into the virtual domains of enterprises entrenched in the supply chain sector of the Greek economy. The spotlight falls upon four dominant transportation firms of the Greek supply chain sector, to unravel the relationship between their website activities and the prediction of their stock market prices. Our analytical tools, adorned with sophisticated statistical methodologies, embracing normality tests, correlations, ANOVA, linear regressions and the utilization of regression residual tests were deployed with precision. As the analytical methodology was deployed, a revelation emerged: The digital footprints left by customers on the virtual domains of supply chain firms provided the ability to predict and influence stock prices. Metrics such as bounce rates, the influx of new visitors and the average time on websites emerged as important factors, that could predict the fluctuations in the stock prices of these Greek supply chain firms. Web analytics have been discerned as a determining factor for predicting the course of transportation firms' stock prices. It serves as a clarion call for global scrutiny, inviting scholars and practitioners alike to scrutinize analogous firms on a global canvas. In this convergence of virtual footprints and financial trajectories lies not just a revelation for today but a harbinger of insights that resonate far beyond the digital borders of the Hellenic transportation sector.
