1. Managing project intangible risk: socio-technical implications in a 'projectified' world

Abstract: Purpose – According to the Project Management Institute, 70% of projects fail globally. The causes of project failure in many instances can be identified as non-technical or behavioral in nature arising from interactions between participants. These intangible risks can emerge in any project setting but especially in project settings having diversity of cultures, customs, beliefs and traditions of various companies or countries. This paper provides an objective framework to address these intangible risks. Study design/methodology/approach – This paper presents a structured approach to identify, assess and manage intangible risks to enhance a project team’s ability to meet its objectives. The authors propose a user-friendly framework, Intangible Risk Assessment Methodology for Projects (IRAMP), to address these risks and the factors that cause them. Meta-network (e.g., a network of networks) simulation and established social network analysis (SNA) measures provide a quantitative assessment and ranking of causal events and their influence on the intangible behavior centric risks. Findings – The proposed IRAMP and meta-network approach were utilized to examine the project delivery process of an international energy firm. Data were gathered using structured interviews, surveys and project team workshops. The use of the IRAMP to highlight intangible risk areas underpinned by the SNA measures led to changes in the company’s organizational structure to enhance project delivery effectiveness. Originality/value – This work extends the existing project risk management literature by providing a novel objective approach to identify and quantify behavior centric intangible risks and the conditions that cause them to emerge.

2. Optimizing parenting and child outcomes following parent–child interaction therapy – toddler: a randomized controlled trial

Abstract: Abstract Background Parent–Child Interaction Therapy—Toddler (PCIT-T) is an attachment-informed intervention model designed to meet the specific developmental needs of toddlers aged 12–24 months presenting with challenging behaviors. Methods This study used a randomized controlled design to evaluate outcomes of PCIT-T for children aged 14–24 months with disruptive behaviors. Ninety toddlers with parent-reported disruptive behavior were randomly allocated to PCIT-T (intervention), an active control condition (Circle of Security– Parenting™; COS-P), or a non-treatment control condition (wait-list; WL). Outcomes were assessed at baseline (Time 1), post treatment/post waitlist (Time 2) and 4-month follow-up (Time 3). Results At follow-up, the PCIT-T group displayed the highest levels of parenting sensitivity and positive parental verbalizations, and the lowest levels of negative child-directed verbalizations and non-attuned mind-minded statements. Of the three groups, the PCIT-T group showed the greatest degree of change on these variables, followed by the COS-P group and then the non-treated controls. The PCIT-T group were also the only group to show significant within-group improvements in sensitivity, self-reported parental reflectiveness, empathy and emotional understanding, parent-reported child social competence, child internalizing problems, and general behavior issues. Significant reductions in parental stress, child externalizing behaviors and parenting behaviors were seen for both the PCIT-T and COS-P groups. Conclusions Delivered in the early intervention period of toddlerhood, Parent–Child Interaction Therapy—Toddler has the potential to bring about significant changes for children presenting with early onset behavioral issues. Abstract: White matter hyperintensities (WMH) are nearly ubiquitous in the aging brain, and their topography and overall burden are associated with cognitive decline. Given their numerosity, accurate methods to automatically segment WMH are needed. Recent developments, including the availability of challenge data sets and improved deep learning algorithms, have led to a new promising deep-learning based automated segmentation model called TrUE-Net, which has yet to undergo rigorous independent validation. Here, we compare TrUE-Net to six established automated WMH segmentation tools, including a semi-manual method. We evaluated the techniques at both global and regional level to compare their ability to detect the established relationship between WMH burden and age. We found that TrUE-Net was highly reliable at identifying WMH regions with low false positive rates, when compared to semi-manual segmentation as the reference standard. TrUE-Net performed similarly or favorably when compared to the other automated techniques. Moreover, TrUE-Net was able to detect relationships between WMH and age to a similar degree as the reference standard semi-manual segmentation at both the global and regional level. These results support the use of TrUE-Net for identifying WMH at the global or regional level, including in large, combined datasets.

Abstract: Background: This study assessed the potential cost-effectiveness of high (80–100%) vs low (21–35%) fraction of inspired oxygen (FiO2) at preventing surgical site infections (SSIs) after abdominal surgery in Nigeria, India, and South Africa. Methods: Decision-analytic models were constructed using best available evidence sourced from unbundled data of an ongoing pilot trial assessing the effectiveness of high FiO2, published literature, and a cost survey in Nigeria, India, and South Africa. Effectiveness was measured as percentage of SSIs at 30 days after surgery, a healthcare perspective was adopted, and costs were reported in US dollars ($). Results: High FiO2 may be cost-effective (cheaper and effective). In Nigeria, the average cost for high FiO2 was $216 compared with $222 for low FiO2 leading to a −$6 (95% confidence interval [CI]: −$13 to −$1) difference in costs. In India, the average cost for high FiO2 was $184 compared with $195 for low FiO2 leading to a −$11 (95% CI: −$15 to −$6) difference in costs. In South Africa, the average cost for high FiO2 was $1164 compared with $1257 for low FiO2 leading to a −$93 (95% CI: −$132 to −$65) difference in costs. The high FiO2 arm had few SSIs, 7.33% compared with 8.38% for low FiO2, leading to a −1.05 (95% CI: −1.14 to −0.90) percentage point reduction in SSIs. Conclusion: High FiO2 could be cost-effective at preventing SSIs in the three countries but further data from large clinical trials are required to confirm this.

5. Multipoint Detection of GRB221009A’s Propagation through the Heliosphere

Abstract: We present the results of processing the effects of the powerful gamma-ray burst GRB221009A captured by the charged particle detectors (electrostatic analyzers and solid-state detectors) on board spacecraft at different points in the heliosphere on 2022 October 9. To follow the GRB221009A propagation through the heliosphere, we used the electron and proton flux measurements from solar missions Solar Orbiter and STEREO-A; Earth’s magnetosphere and solar wind missions THEMIS and Wind; meteorological satellites POES15, POES19, and MetOp3; and MAVEN—a NASA mission orbiting Mars. GRB221009A had a structure of four bursts: the less intense Pulse 1—the triggering impulse—was detected by gamma-ray observatories at T _0 = 13:16:59 UT (near the Earth); the most intense Pulses 2 and 3 were detected on board all the spacecraft from the list; and Pulse 4 was detected in more than 500 s after Pulse 1. Due to their different scientific objectives, the spacecraft, whose data were used in this study, were separated by more than 1 au (Solar Orbiter and MAVEN). This enabled the tracking of GRB221009A as it was propagating across the heliosphere. STEREO-A was the first to register Pulse 2 and 3 of the GRB, almost 100 s before their detection by spacecraft in the vicinity of Earth. MAVEN detected GRB221009A Pulses 2, 3, and 4 at the orbit of Mars about 237 s after their detection near Earth. By processing the observed time delays, we show that the source location of the GRB221009A was at R.A. 288.°5, decl. 18.°5 ± 2° (J2000).

6. Reexamination of Rhopalosiphum (Hemiptera: Aphididae) using linear discriminant analysis to determine the validity of synonymized species, with some new synonymies and distribution data

Abstract: Although 17 species of Rhopalosiphum (Hemiptera: Aphididae) are currently recognized, 85 taxonomic names have been proposed historically. Some species are morphologically similar, especially alate individuals and most synonymies were proposed in catalogues without evidence. This has led to both confusion and difficulty in making accurate species-level identifications. In an attempt to address these issues, we developed a new approach to resolve synonymies based on linear discriminant analysis (LDA) and suggest that this approach may be useful for other taxonomic groups to reassess previously proposed synonymies. We compared 34 valid and synonymized species using 49 measurements and 20 ratios from 1,030 individual aphids. LDA was repeatedly applied to subsets of the data after removing clearly separated groups found in a previous iteration. We found our characters and technique worked well to distinguish among apterae. However, it separated well only those alatae with some distinctive traits, while those apterate which were morphologically similar were not well separated using LDA. Based on our morphological investigation, we transfer R. arundinariae (Tissot, 1933) to Melanaphis supported by details of the wing veination and other morphological traits and propose Melanaphis takahashii Skvarla and Miller as a replacement name for M. arundinariae (Takahashi, 1937); we also synonymize R. momo (Shinji, 1922) with R. nymphaeae (Linnaeus, 1761). Our analyses confirmed many of the proposed synonymies, which will help to stabilize the nomenclature and species concepts within Rhopalosiphum.

7. The variables perceived to be important during patient handover by South African prehospital care providers

Abstract: Introduction: High-acuity patients are typically transported directly to the emergency centre via ambulance by trained prehospital care providers. As such, the emergency centre becomes the first of many physical transition points for patients, where a change of care provider (or handover) takes place. The aim of this study was to describe the variables perceived to be important during patient handover by a cohort of South African prehospital care providers. Methods: A purpose-designed questionnaire was used to gather data related to prehospital emergency care provider opinions on the importance of certain patient variables. Results: We collected 175 completed questionnaires from 75 (43%) BAA, 49 (28%) ANA, 15 (9%) ECT, 16 (9%) ANT and 20 (11%) ECP respondents. Within the ten handover variables perceived to be most important for inclusion in emergency centre handover, five were related to vital signs. Blood pressure was ranked most important, followed by type of major injuries, anatomical location of major injuries, pulse rate, respiration rate and patient history. These were followed by Glasgow Coma Score, injuries sustained, patient priority, oxygen saturations and patient allergies. Conclusion: This study has provided some interesting results related to which handover elements prehospital care providers consider as most important to include in handover. Abstract: Introduction Surgical site infection (SSI) is one of the most common healthcare-associated infections (HAIs). However, there is a lack of data available about SSI in children worldwide, especially from low-income and middle-income countries. This study aimed to estimate the incidence of SSI in children and associations between SSI and morbidity across human development settings.Methods A multicentre, international, prospective, validated cohort study of children aged under 16 years undergoing clean-contaminated, contaminated or dirty gastrointestinal surgery. Any hospital in the world providing paediatric surgery was eligible to contribute data between January and July 2016. The primary outcome was the incidence of SSI by 30 days. Relationships between explanatory variables and SSI were examined using multilevel logistic regression. Countries were stratified into high development, middle development and low development groups using the United Nations Human Development Index (HDI).Results Of 1159 children across 181 hospitals in 51 countries, 523 (45·1%) children were from high HDI, 397 (34·2%) from middle HDI and 239 (20·6%) from low HDI countries. The 30-day SSI rate was 6.3% (33/523) in high HDI, 12·8% (51/397) in middle HDI and 24·7% (59/239) in low HDI countries. SSI was associated with higher incidence of 30-day mortality, intervention, organ-space infection and other HAIs, with the highest rates seen in low HDI countries. Median length of stay in patients who had an SSI was longer (7.0 days), compared with 3.0 days in patients who did not have an SSI. Use of laparoscopy was associated with significantly lower SSI rates, even after accounting for HDI.Conclusion The odds of SSI in children is nearly four times greater in low HDI compared with high HDI countries. Policies to reduce SSI should be prioritised as part of the wider global agenda.

Abstract: Lake Steinsfjorden, an important Norwegian location for noble crayfish (Astacus astacus), is often affected by cyanobacterial blooms caused by microcystin (MC)-producing Planktothrix spp. The impact of MCs on noble crayfish as a food source and crayfish health is largely unknown. We investigated the quantities and correlations of MCs in noble crayfish and lake water during and after a cyanobacterial bloom peaking in June–July 2015. Noble crayfish and water samples were collected monthly from June to October 2015 and in October 2016. The content of MCs was analysed by ELISA from tail muscle, intestine, stomach and hepatopancreas. PCR analysis for Planktothrix gene markers was performed on crayfish stomach content. Water samples were analysed for phytoplankton composition, biomass and MCs. PCR-positive stomach contents indicated Planktothrix to be part of the noble crayfish diet. Concentrations of MCs were highest in the hepatopancreas, stomach and intestine, peaking in August–September. Tail muscle contained low concentrations of MCs. Similar levels of MCs were found in crayfish from 2016. Except in September 2015, a normal portion of boiled noble crayfish tails was below the tolerable daily intake (TDI) for MCs for humans. Removing the intestine more than halved the content of MCs and seems a reasonable precautionary measure for noble crayfish consumers.

Abstract: Electrostatic analysers measure the flux of plasma particles in velocity space and determine their velocity distribution function. There are occasions when science objectives require high time-resolution measurements, and the instrument operates in short measurement cycles, sampling only a portion of the velocity distribution function. One such high-resolution measurement strategy consists of sampling the two-dimensional pitch-angle distributions of the plasma particles, which describes the velocities of the particles with respect to the local magnetic field direction. Here, we investigate the accuracy of plasma bulk parameters from such high-resolution measurements. We simulate electron observations from the Solar Wind Analyser’s (SWA) Electron Analyser System (EAS) on board Solar Orbiter. We show that fitting analysis of the synthetic datasets determines the plasma temperature and kappa index of the distribution within 10% of their actual values, even at large heliocentric distances where the expected solar wind flux is very low. Interestingly, we show that although measurement points with zero counts are not statistically significant, they provide information about the particle distribution function which becomes important when the particle flux is low. We also examine the convergence of the fitting algorithm for expected plasma conditions and discuss the sources of statistical and systematic uncertainties.

Abstract: Background: It is uncertain which simple measures of childhood obesity are best for predicting future obesity-related health problems and the persistence of obesity into adolescence and adulthood. Objectives: To investigate the ability of simple measures, such as body mass index (BMI), to predict the persistence of obesity from childhood into adulthood and to predict obesity-related adult morbidities. To investigate how accurately simple measures diagnose obesity in children, and how acceptable these measures are to children, carers and health professionals. Data sources: Multiple sources including MEDLINE, EMBASE and The Cochrane Library were searched from 2008 to 2013. Methods: Systematic reviews and a meta-analysis were carried out of large cohort studies on the association between childhood obesity and adult obesity; the association between childhood obesity and obesity-related morbidities in adulthood; and the diagnostic accuracy of simple childhood obesity measures. Study quality was assessed using Quality Assessment of Diagnostic Accuracy Studies-2 (QUADAS-2) and a modified version of the Quality in Prognosis Studies (QUIPS) tool. A systematic review and an elicitation exercise were conducted on the acceptability of the simple measures. Results: Thirty-seven studies (22 cohorts) were included in the review of prediction of adult morbidities. Twenty-three studies (16 cohorts) were included in the tracking review. All studies included BMI. There were very few studies of other measures. There was a strong positive association between high childhood BMI and adult obesity [odds ratio 5.21, 95% confidence interval (CI) 4.50 to 6.02]. A positive association was found between high childhood BMI and adult coronary heart disease, diabetes and a range of cancers, but not stroke or breast cancer. The predictive accuracy of childhood BMI to predict any adult morbidity was very low, with most morbidities occurring in adults who were of healthy weight in childhood. Predictive accuracy of childhood obesity was moderate for predicting adult obesity, with a sensitivity of 30% and a specificity of 98%. Persistence of obesity from adolescence to adulthood was high. Thirty-four studies were included in the diagnostic accuracy review. Most of the studies used the least reliable reference standard (dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry); only 24% of studies were of high quality. The sensitivity of BMI for diagnosing obesity and overweight varied considerably; specificity was less variable. Pooled sensitivity of BMI was 74% (95% CI 64.2% to 81.8%) and pooled specificity was 95% (95% CI 92.2% to 96.4%). The acceptability to children and their carers of BMI or other common simple measures was generally good. Limitations: Little evidence was available regarding childhood measures other than BMI. No individual-level analysis could be performed. Conclusions: Childhood BMI is not a good predictor of adult obesity or adult disease; the majority of obese adults were not obese as children and most obesity-related adult morbidity occurs in adults who had a healthy childhood weight. However, obesity (as measured using BMI) was found to persist from childhood to adulthood, with most obese adolescents also being obese in adulthood. BMI was found to be reasonably good for diagnosing obesity during childhood. There is no convincing evidence suggesting that any simple measure is better than BMI for diagnosing obesity in childhood or predicting adult obesity and morbidity. Further research on obesity measures other than BMI is needed to determine which is the best tool for diagnosing childhood obesity, and new cohort studies are needed to investigate the impact of contemporary childhood obesity on adult obesity and obesity-related morbidities. Abstract: Electric fields have been employed to promote macromolecular crystallization for several decades. Although crystals grown in electric fields seem to present higher diffraction quality, these methods are not widespread. For most configurations, electrodes are in direct contact with the protein solution. Here, we propose a configuration that can be easily extended to standard crystallization methods for which the electrodes are not in direct contact with the protein solution. Furthermore, the proposed electrode configuration supplies an external DC electric field. Glucose Isomerase from Streptomyces rubiginosus crystals were grown at room temperature using the microbatch method in the presence of 1, 2, 4, and 6 kV. Several crystallization trials were carried out for reproducibility and statistical analysis purposes. The comparison with crystals grown in the absence of electric fields showed that crystallization in the presence of electric fields increases the size of crystals, while decreasing the number of nucleations. X-ray diffraction analysis of the crystals showed that those grown in the presence of electric fields are of higher crystal quality.

Abstract: This thesis examines the depiction of warfare in post-9/11 ancient world epics and assesses the extent to which these films engage with contemporary events by means of allegory and analogy. Inspired by scholarship on allegorical and analogous interpretations of 1950s-60s ancient world epics, I explore how the current cycle engages with the American socio-political landscape in the wake of 9/11, with particular emphasis on the War on Terror and ensuing conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. I chart the genre’s evolution in relation to the combat film, and examine how the current cycle of ancient world epics integrates the tropes of other genres into its portrayal of warfare, invasion, occupation and imperialism. Within this context, I explore the recurrent motif of the father-son dynamic, and assess how its use in combat films corresponds to that in ancient world epics. I also discuss how this motif was employed in 1980s Vietnam War films, and what its use in these modern epics suggests about the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. Furthermore, I discuss the use of the unreliable narrator to engage with wider debates on the value of historical films compared to written history. The aim of this study is to demonstrate that the ancient world epic is a malleable construct with which filmmakers can engage with the present while depicting the past. I build on existing studies of the ancient world in cinema, contributing new understanding of the current cycle’s relationship to its predecessors, to other genres, and to post-9/11 American society. In so doing this thesis contributes to notions of film as art, as industry, and as history, and how they intersect in cinematic depictions of the ancient world.

Abstract: This thesis concerns companies that have traditionally built their businesses by selling products that are using services to augment or replace sales of these products, in a business-to-business (b2b) environment. These companies have been termed productcentric businesses or PCBs. The objectives of the research were as follows; to assess how PCBs measure the success of their services; to determine which factors are most important in creating success; to understand the drivers that cause PCBs to enhance their focus on services; to identify possible service strategies to find out which ones create success; to investigate how PCBs can best organise their businesses to achieve success through services. A literature review was carried out on articles that addressed each objective. Most previous research was exploratory in nature, based on case studies or interviews with a limited number of company managers. There have been calls for academics to carry out quantitative research in this area to provide more of a confirmatory approach. This is the major gap in the literature that this research sought to fill. The author adopted a postpositivist theoretical position to address this research. A mixed methodology was used to answer the research questions, using both qualitative (the exploratory phase) and quantitative (the confirmatory phase) methods. The qualitative phase involved interviewing 40 managers in 25 organisations across 11 sectors. This data was analysed using template analysis and was used (together with the literature) to create a survey, to which managers in 155 organisations responded. Quantitative data was analysed using a number of techniques; exploratory factor analysis (EFA), multivariate analysis of variance (Manova), discriminant analysis, independent samples t-test and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). Two factors were identified that PCBs use to measure the success of their services: 'Corporate success' and 'Satisfaction & delivery', with the former being the primary measure. Five factors were identified that create success, with the order of importance as follows: 'Industry standing', 'Personnel', 'Team working', 'Services methods & infrastructure' and 'Solution approach'. The main drivers on PCBs to enhance their focus on services were categorised as 'Strategic options', 'Customer demands' and 'Product characteristics'. A new service strategy typology was proposed based on two dimensions: whether services are closely linked to a company's own products or its own and those of third parties; whether services are closely aligned to products or more aligned to customers' operational activities. Each of the four strategic positions from this typology was tested to determine which created 'Corporate success', with the only one that did being 'Product-attached services on own products' (e.g. product installation, training, technical support) when these products create market differentiation. Post-hoc analysis also showed that high levels of 'Corporate success' lead to increased product sales. Whether an independent service organisation creates 'Corporate success' was also tested, with the results showing that for the population as a whole this was not the case, but for PCBs in the Complex Products & Systems (CoPS) sectors it was. This research made a methodological contribution since it is one of the first studies to address the topic using quantitative methods. A number of theoretical contributions have also been made, e.g. those factors used to measure and create success were identified; a new service typology was proposed and used to test which strategy created services success, with services success shown to lead to product success; the significance of an independent service organisation was shown for companies in the CoPS sectors.

41. Questions of youth, identity and social difference in the classroom study of popular music : a case study in the development of media education

Abstract: This thesis is centrally concerned with just one specific practice, teaching Media Studies with school students in the 14-18 age phase, and with one marginal feature of that practice, the study of popular music. The thesis explores the place of popular music in Media Studies and, in doing so, engages with issues of social and educational identity for people in the last years of secondary schooling. The introduction initiates an autobiographical theme, subsequently informing discussion of the negotiation of identities between the researcher and the school students. Chapter 1 provides an account of popular music in the literature of media education and in the parallel literature of music education. Chapter 2 reviews aspects of debates around 'adolescence' and 'youth', with reference to questions of 'agency', and thus provides a background for the analysis of data presented in Chapters 4, 5 and 6. Chapter 3 offers an overview of methodology and sets out a chronology of the research with particular emphasis upon its progressi ve focusing. The methodological precedents for the thesis lie in action research and in the development of 'reflective practice' in teacher education, and particularly within English and media education itself. Chapters 4 and 5 report upon a taught unit relating to popular music, conducted in collaboration with a Head of English. Within the frame of the institutional relation between teacher and taught, issues of class and gender are given particular attention in the analysis of the data. Chapter 6 reports a more 'experimental' intervention in Media Studies practice. The chapter derives from a further phase of research with first year A Level Media Studies students in a selective school and extends the earlier discussion of gender and class in relation to modes of (self) representation within particular educational settings. Chapter 7 reviews the research and possibilities for teaching pop music in Media Studies.

42. Hybrid Grouping: The Relationship to Student Learning Outcomes, School Leadership and School Climate

Abstract: This study examined the implementation of Hybrid Grouping at Angel Elementary School. The Hybrid Grouping model consisted of three elements, achievement grouping, departmentalization and self-contained classes. The data collected allowed participants (n = 20) to share their perceptions of the leadership of the school and its relationship to the implementation of Hybrid Grouping and school climate. This mixed-methods study used data from the Angel Elementary PRIDE Survey, Angel Elementary Teachers Perception Survey, Interviews, and Alabama reading and math testing data. The framework of this study was developed based on three key constructivist theories social constructivism posited by Vzgostsky (1978), cognitive constructivism formulated by Jean Piaget (1952, 1954, 1962) and pragmatism, as delineated by Dewey (1916/2012). These three theorists suggested the social interaction of children with their environment and participating in practical, hands on activities were critical to their social, cultural, and personal development. The results of this study of Hybrid Grouping showed that significant change occurred in student performance from the pre post implementation test on ARMT scores. The results suggested that when Hybrid Grouping is implemented properly, student achievement increases. However, the 4th grade students (3d) had less positive than negative differences in the ARMT Reading scores and 6th grade students (3f) had less positive than negative differences in the ARMT Mathematics. The analysis of teacher interviews supported the findings from the quantitative data. Four themes were gathered from the interviews that aligned with the surveys and the ARMT scores. The four themes were: Teaching to Their Strength, Leaders' Role in Developing People, School Culture, and Innovation for Student Growth. Two broad conclusions were drawn from the research. First, the teachers perceived school leadership as having a positive impact on school climate. Secondly, teachers perceived that a shift occurred in the organizational climate during the successful implementation of this innovative model. Significant student learning outcomes occurred in concert with this climate shift. Recommendations for practice and for further research were provided. (Solar Phys. 162(1-2), 1–37 1995), STEREO Howard et al. (Space Sci. Rev. 136(1-4), 67–115 2008), Hinode Kosugi et al. (Solar Phys. 243(1), 3–17 2007), Pesnell et al. One of the major mysteries of the Sun is the solar cycle. The activity cycle of the Sun drives the structure and behaviour of the heliosphere and of course, the driver of space weather. In addition, solar activity and variability provides fluctuating input into the Earth climate models, and these same physical processes are applicable to stellar systems hosting exoplanets. One of the main obstructions to understanding the solar cycle, and hence all solar activity, is our current lack of understanding of the polar regions. In this White Paper, submitted to the European Space Agency in response to the Voyage 2050 call, we describe a mission concept that aims to address this fundamental issue. In parallel, we recognise that viewing the Sun from above the polar regions enables further scientific advantages, beyond those related to the solar cycle, such as unique and powerful studies of coronal mass ejection processes, from a global perspective, and studies of coronal structure and activity in polar regions. 45. Electron distribution functions measured by the SWA/EAS sensor during the first perihelia of the Solar Orbiter mission

Abstract: We present an updated procedure developed to calibrate flight data from the Electron Analyser System (EAS) of the Solar Wind Analyzer (SWA) instrument onboard Solar Orbiter. By imposing specific physical conditions on the data set, like isotropy of the core electron population, and by comparing electron fluxes measured by the two EAS heads, we are able to derive consistent correction factors of the raw data set. The procedure is shown to improve the quality of the merging of the two heads dataset. We evaluate the impact of these corrections on ground moment calculation and on specific features of the electron pitch-angle distributions during the first perihelia of the mission. Anisotropy of the component of the pitch-angle electron distribution in different energy ranges is analysed. Detailed properties of specific features of the distribution including strahl and anti-strahl electrons are examined with this updated procedure.

46. Solar Orbiter reveals that reconnection jets cluster in the solar wind

Abstract: Magnetic reconnection is a fundamental process in astrophysical plasma, as it enables the dissipation of energy at kinetic scales. Detecting it in-situ is therefore key to further our understanding of energy conversion in space plasma. However, ion reconnection jets usually scale from seconds to minutes in-situ, and as such they can be quite tedious to find in the months or years of data provided by Wind, ACE, Helios, PSP and Solar Orbiter.In this work, we use a new approach to identify automatically reconnection exhausts in-situ. The method strongly relies on the Walén relation and uses Bayesian inference as well as physical considerations to detect reconnection jets in-situ. Applying the detection algorithm to one month of Solar Orbiter data at 0.7 ~AU, we find an occurrence rate of 6.4~jets/day, which is significantly higher than in previous studies performed at 1~AU. We repeat the analysis over the Solar Orbiter perihelion at 0.3 AU and show that the occurrence rate of magnetic reconnection tends to increase with radial distance.We show that magnetic reconnection exhausts clearly cluster in the solar wind. We perform a statistical analysis, distinguishing between the exhausts associated with the heliospheric current sheet and turbulent reconnection. We find that the source and the degree of Alfvénicity of the solar wind might have an impact on magnetic reconnection occurrence.

47. Ion reflection observed at high Mach number interplanetary shocks: Solar Orbiter observations

Abstract: Collisionless shocks exist across diverse plasma environments. Examples are supernova remnants, comets, near planets, and interplanetary (IP) shocks in the solar wind. As the shock Mach number increases, so does the complexity of the ion distribution functions at the shock front due to features such as whistler precursors, ion reflection, shock ripples, and nonstationarity. Experimental studies of ion dynamics at supercritical high Mach (>5) number shocks are typically conducted using planetary bow shock crossings since the Mach number of these shocks are higher while the shock speeds with respect to the observing spacecraft are lower. As a result, it is easier to resolve complex features in the ion velocity distribution function. For these reasons, studies concentrating on ion reflection at IP shocks are rare. However, comparisons with IP shocks are interesting since they have a much larger curvature radius and can be accompanied by more energetic particles.In this work, we analyze a quasi-perpendicular shock observed by Solar Orbiter (SolO) on 30 October 2021 with a Mach number of around 7; this is much higher than the typical values of SolO IP shocks, which are between 1-3. For this event, we observed clear signatures in the upstream ion distribution function of reflected ions with energies extending to around 15 keV, which is lower than reported by other studies. The shock also demonstrates a non-planar feature, which may indicate shock rippling. In addition, whistler precursors are also found immediately upstream locally within the shock foot. We present these experimental results and a comparison with test-particle analysis and numerical modeling results.

48. A detailed analysis of ion-acoustic waves observed in the solar wind by the Solar Orbiter

Abstract: Ion-acoustic waves are often observed in the solar wind along the Solar Orbiter’s orbit. These electrostatic waves are generated via ion-ion or current-driven instabilities below the local proton plasma frequency. Due to the Doppler shift, they are typically observed in the frequency range between the local electron and proton plasma frequency in the spacecraft frame. Ion-acoustic waves often accompany large-scale solar wind structures and play a role in the energy dissipation in the propagating solar wind. Time Domain Sampler (TDS) receiver, a part of the Radio and Plasma Waves (RPW) instrument, is sampling wave emissions at frequencies below 200 kHz almost continuously from the beginning of the mission. Almost three years of observations allow us to perform a detailed study of ion-acoustic waves in the solar wind under variable plasma conditions. The emission tends to be observed when proton density and temperature are highly perturbed. A detailed analysis of the proton velocity distribution and wave generation using solar wind data from a Proton and Alpha particle Sensor (PAS) of the Solar Wind Analyzer (SWA) is shown.

49. Photoelectrons and spacecraft potential effects on SWA-EAS electron measurements on board the Solar Orbiter spacecraft

Abstract: Any spacecraft immersed into the solar wind builds up a non-zero electric potential with respect to the local environment by continuously collecting the charged particles from ambient plasma populations and emitting additional charged particle populations, namely photo-electrons and/or secondary electrons, from its surface materials. These newborn electrons of spacecraft origin as well as the electric fields induced in the vicinity of the spacecraft body by the so called spacecraft potential may in turn significantly distort the local plasma conditions and therefore affect any in-situ electron observations and thus potentially modify the derived electron properties. Here we present an observational analysis of these effects as seen by the SWA-EAS electron analyser in the variable plasma and electrostatic environment of the Solar Orbiter spacecraft. We provide some characteristic properties of these parasitic electron populations in order to later develop possible correction methods applied to the SWA-EAS measurements for deriving unperturbed ambient plasma properties. The analysis is performed on a statistical basis using a large set of SWA-EAS 3D electron velocity distribution functions and in comparison to other relevant in-situ measurements acquired namely by other two complementary on board plasma instruments – SWA-PAS and RPW.

50. Using non-thermal electron distributions to probe the inner heliosphere

Abstract: The electrons in the solar wind exhibit non-thermal velocity distribution functions. Observed non-thermal features of the electron distribution in the inner heliosphere include the field-aligned strahl, the suprathermal halo, the sunward deficit, and temperature anisotropy. These features are the result of a complex interplay between global expansion effects and local interactions between the particles and the electromagnetic fields. Global effects create, for example, the strahl via the mirror force in the decreasing magnetic field and the sunward deficit via reflections in the interplanetary electric field. Local wave-particle interactions such as instabilities change the shape of these features and thus the overall properties and moments of the electron distribution. We discuss the science opportunities that the high-resolution data of Solar Orbiter's SWA/EAS sensor open up for unprecedented studies of the causes and effects of non-thermal electron distributions in the context of the expansion of the solar wind in the inner heliosphere. We focus, in particular, on the interplay between expansion effects and instabilities related to the electron strahl and the sunward deficit.
