Skyrmions are small topologically protected magnetic structures that hold promise for applications from data storage to neuromorphic computing and they have been shown to possess internal microwave frequency excitations. Skyrmions in a synthetic antiferromagnet have been predicted to be smaller and faster than their ferromagnetic equivalents and also shown to possess more internal modes. In this work, we consider the breathing modes of skyrmions in a four repetition synthetic antiferromagnetic multilayer by means of micromagnetic simulations and examine the further splitting of the modes into different arrangements of out-of-phase, in-phase, and modes with more complex phase relationships. This results in a lowering of frequencies, which is promising for skyrmion sensing applications in a synthetic antiferromagnet.

Artificial spin ices consist of nanomagnets arranged on the sites of various periodic and aperiodic lattices. They have enabled the experimental investigation of a variety of fascinating phenomena such as frustration, emergent magnetic monopoles and phase transitions that have previously been the domain of bulk spin crystals and theory, as we discuss in this Review. Artificial spin ices also show promise as reprogrammable magnonic crystals and, with this in mind, we give an overview of the measurements of fast dynamics in these magnetic metamaterials. We survey the variety of geometries that have been implemented, in terms of both the form of the nanomagnets and the lattices on which they are placed, including quasicrystalline systems and artificial spin systems in 3D. Different magnetic materials can also be incorporated to modify anisotropies and blocking temperatures, for example. With this large variety of systems, the way is open to discover new phenomena, and we complete this Review with possible directions for the future. Artificial spin ices are metamaterials displaying fascinating phenomena arising from the collective behaviour of nanoscale magnets. We review recent developments in terms of emergent magnetic monopoles, phase transitions, dynamics and geometries, and discuss future directions for research and potential applications.

Magnetic skyrmions are topological solitons that exhibit an increased stability against annihilation [1, 2], and can be displaced with low current densities [3], making them a promising candidate as an information carrier [1]. In order to demonstrate a viable skyrmion-based memory device, it is necessary to reliably and reproducibly nucleate, displace, detect, and delete the magnetic skyrmions. While the skyrmion displacement [4–7] and detection [8, 9] have both been investigated in detail, much less attention has been dedicated to the study of the sub-ns dynamics of the skyrmion nucleation and deletion processes. Only limited studies on the statics [10, 11] and above-ns dynamics [12] have been performed, leaving still many open questions on the dynamics of the nucleation process. Furthermore, the vast majority of the presently existing studies focus on the nucleation from random natural pinning sites [10, 12], or from patterned constrictions in the magnetic material itself [10, 11], which limit the functionality of the skyrmion-based device. Those limitations can be overcome by the fabrication of a dedicated injector device on top of the magnetic material [13]. In this study, we investigate the nucleation of magnetic skyrmions from a dedicated nano-engineered injector, demonstrating the reliable magnetic skyrmion nucleation at the remnant state. The sub-ns dynamics of the skyrmion nucleation process were also investigated, allowing us to shine light on the physical processes driving the nucleation.

It has been shown previously that the presence of a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in perpendicularly magnetized thin films stabilizes N\'eel type domain walls. We demonstrate, using micromagnetic simulations and analytical modeling, that the presence of a uniaxial in-plane magnetic anisotropy can also lead to the formation of N\'eel walls in the absence of a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. It is possible to abruptly switch between Bloch and N\'eel walls via a small modulation of both the in-plane, but also the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. This opens up a route towards electric field control of the domain wall type with small applied voltages through electric field controlled anisotropies.

Artificial spin ices were originally introduced as analogs of the pyrochlore spin ices, but have since become a much richer field. The original attractions of building nanotechnological analogs of the pyrochlores were threefold: to allow room temperature studies of geometrical frustration; to provide model statistical mechanical systems where all the relevant parameters in an experiment can be tuned by design; and to be able to examine the exact microstate of those systems using advanced magnetic microscopy methods. From this beginning the field has grown to encompass studies of the effects of quenched disorder, thermally activated dynamics, microwave frequency responses, magnetotransport properties, and the development of lattice geometries–with related emergent physics—that have no analog in naturally-occurring crystalline systems. The field also offers the prospect of contributing to novel magnetic logic devices, since the arrays of nanoislands that form artificial spin ices are similar in many respects to those that are used in the development of magnetic quantum cellular automata. In this chapter, I review the experimental aspects of this story, complementing the theoretical chapter, Chap. 15, by Gia-Wei Chern.

The interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) is important for chiral domain walls (DWs) and for stabilizing magnetic skyrmions. We study the effects of introducing increasing thicknesses of Ir, from zero to 2 nm, into a Pt/Co/Ta multilayer between the Co and Ta layers. There is a marked increase in magnetic moment, due to the suppression of the dead layer at the interface with Ta, but the perpendicular anisotropy is hardly affected. All samples show a universal scaling of the field-driven DW velocity across the creep and depinning regimes. Asymmetric bubble expansion shows that DWs in all of the samples have the left-handed Neel form. The value of in-plane magnetic field at which the creep velocity shows a minimum drops markedly on the introduction of Ir, as does the frequency shift of the Stokes and anti-Stokes peaks in Brillouin light scattering (BLS) measurements. Despite this qualitative similarity, there are quantitative differences in the DMI strength given by the two measurements, with BLS often returning higher values. Many features in bubble expansion velocity curves do not fit simple models commonly used, namely a lack of symmetry about the velocity minimum and no difference in velocities at high in-plane fields. These features are explained by the use of a new model in which the depinning field is allowed to vary with in-plane field in a way determined from micromagnetic simulations. This theory shows that the velocity minimum underestimates the DMI field, consistent with BLS giving higher values. Our results suggest that the DMI at an Ir/Co interface has the same sign as the DMI at a Pt/Co interface.

Equiatomic FeRh alloys undergo a fascinating first-order metamagnetic phase transition (FOMPT) just above room temperature, which has attracted reinvigorated interest for applications in spintronics. Until now, all attempts to grow nanothin FeRh alloy films have consistently shown that FeRh layers tend to grow in the Volmer-Weber growth mode. Here we show that sputter-grown sub-15-nm-thick FeRh alloy films deposited at low sputter-gas pressure, typically ∼0.1 Pa, onto (001)-oriented MgO substrates, grow in a peening-induced Frank-van der Merwe growth mode for FeRh film thicknesses above 5 nm, circumventing this major drawback. The bombardment of high-energy sputtered atoms, the atom-peening effect, induces a rebalancing between adsorbate-surface and adsorbate-adsorbate interactions, leading to the formation of a smooth continuous nanothin FeRh film. Chemical order in the films increases with the FeRh thickness, tFeRh, and varies monotonically from 0.75 up to 0.9. Specular x-ray diffraction scans around Bragg peaks show Pendellösung fringes for films with tFeRh≥5.2 nm, which reflects in smooth well-ordered densified single-crystal FeRh layers. The nanothin film's roughness varies from 0.6 down to about 0.1 nm as tFeRh increases, and scales linearly with the integral breadth of the rocking curve, proving its microstructured origin. Magnetometry shows that the FOMPT in the nanothin films is qualitatively similar to that of the bulk alloy, except for the thinnest film of 3.7 nm.

We have performed a detailed investigation into the inter-subband scattering within InAs/GaSb coupled quantum wells in the electron dominated regime. By considering the carrier mobilities and the quantum lifetime as a function of carrier density, we find that the occupation of higher order electron-like subbands are inhibited by anticrossing with the hole subbands. We also find that, by applying a gate bias to the GaSb layer, we are able to move the electron-hole anticrossing point in energy, modulating the electron-like states that should be localised within the InAs layer.

We report on the time-resolved investigation of current- and field-induced domain wall motion in the flow regime in perpendicularly magnetized microwires exhibiting antisymmetric exchange interaction by means of scanning transmission X-ray microscopy with a 200 ps time step. The sub-ns time step of the dynamical images allowed us to observe the absence of incubation times for the motion of the domain wall within an uncertainty of 200 ps, together with indications for a negligible inertia of the domain wall. Furthermore, we observed that, for short current and magnetic field pulses, the magnetic domain walls do not exhibit a tilting during their motion, providing a mechanism for the fast, tilt-free, current-induced motion of magnetic domain walls.

Thermal properties of submicrometer wires of Pd-doped FeRh alloys are evaluated from measurements of transport properties around the first-order antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic phase transition. Recently, in a submicrometer wire of FeRh alloy, an asymmetric structure between heating and cooling processes was reported in the vicinity of the phase transition temperature. A system where finite-size effects appear is expected to show different magnetic and thermal properties from those in bulk and thin film. However, thermal or magnetization measurements are difficult to perform on samples with such a tiny volume. Here, we demonstrate a quantitative evaluation of thermal properties in thin films and submicrometer wires of B2-ordered Pd-doped FeRh alloy grown on MgO (001). Resistivity measurements on a series of wires with different widths reveal that the anomaly in the resistance change is enhanced in narrow wires. As the transport properties in submicrometer wires sensitively reflect those magnetic states, the entropy change and the irreversible energy loss during the first-order phase transition have been determined via resistance measurements. We find a larger energy loss in smaller samples where wider hysteresis loops appear in temperature-driven measurements. This method can be a probe to evaluate the finite-size effect induced by a restricted magnetic domain nucleation process during the phase transition.

Magnetic skyrmions are knot-like quasiparticles. They are candidates for non-volatile data storage in which information is moved between fixed read and write terminals. Read-out operation of skyrmion-based spintronic devices will rely upon electrical detection of a single magnetic skyrmion within a nanostructure. Here, we present Pt/Co/Ir nanodiscs which support skyrmions at room temperature. We measured the Hall resistivity whilst simultaneously imaging the spin texture using magnetic scanning transmission x-ray microscopy (STXM). The Hall resistivity is correlated to both the presence and size of the skyrmion. The size-dependent part matches the expected anomalous Hall signal when averaging the magnetisation over the entire disc. We observed a resistivity contribution which only depends on the number and sign of skyrmion-like objects present in the disc. Each skyrmion gives rise to 22$\pm$2 n{\Omega} cm irrespective of its size. We report on the use of time-resolved scanning transmission x-ray microscopy imaging for the visualization of the dynamical canting of the magnetization induced by field-like spin–orbit torques in a perpendicularly magnetized microwire. In particular, we show how the contributions to the dynamical canting of the magnetization arising from the field-like spin–orbit torque can be separated from the heating-induced effects on the magnetization of the microwire. This method will allow for the imaging of the dynamical effects of spin–orbit torques in device-like structures and buried layers.

We report on the investigation of current-induced domain wall motion of Neel domain walls in perpendicularly magnetized microwires with curved geometries in the flow regime. The investigation was performed by time-resolved scanning transmission x-ray microscopy. In particular, we studied the dynamical tilting of the Neel domain walls, observing that an asymmetric behavior in the domain wall tilt appears upon an inversion of the polarity of the current pulse driving the motion, an effect not predicted by state-of-the-art theories and micromagnetic modeling.

Spin crossover (SCO) molecules are promising bi-stable magnetic switches with applications in molecular spintronics. However, little is known about the switching effects of a single SCO molecule when it is confined between two metal electrodes. Here we examine the switching properties of a [Fe(III)(EtOSalPet )(NCS)] SCO molecule that is specifically tailored for surface deposition and binding to only one gold electrode in a nanogap device. Temperature dependent conductivity measurements on SCO molecule containing electromigrated gold break junctions show voltage independent telegraphic-like switching between two resistance states at temperature below 200 K. The transition temperature is very different from the transition temperature of 83 K that occurs in a bulk film of the same material. This indicates that the bulk, co-operative SCO phenomenon is no longer preserved for a single molecule and that the surface interaction drastically increases the temperature of the SCO phenomenon. Another key finding of this work is that some devices show switching between multiple resistance levels. The phase coexistence present through a first-order phase transition means there will be finite regions between the two phases where the structure of the system will vary from one phase to the other, known as a phase boundary wall. This region is said to play an important but unknown role in the dynamics of the first-order phase transitions. Here, by using both x-ray photon correlation spectroscopy and magnetometry techniques to measure the temporal isothermal development at various points through the thermally activated first-order metamagnetic phase transition present in the near-equiatomic FeRh alloy, we are able to isolate the dynamic behavior of the domain walls in this system. These investigations reveal that relaxation behavior of the domain walls changes when phase coexistence is introduced into the system and that the domain wall dynamics is different to the macroscale behavior. We attribute this to the effect of the exchange coupling between regions of either magnetic phase changing the dynamic properties of domain walls relative to bulk regions of either phase. Rotating all islands in square artificial spin ice (ASI) uniformly about their centres gives rise to the recently reported pinwheel ASI. At angles around 45$^\mathrm{o}$, the antiferromagnetic ordering changes to ferromagnetic and the magnetic configurations of the system exhibit near-degeneracy, making it particularly sensitive to small perturbations. We investigate through micromagnetic modelling the influence of dipolar fields produced by physically extended islands in field-driven magnetisation processes in pinwheel arrays, and compare the results to hysteresis experiments performed in-situ using Lorentz transmission electron microscopy. We find that magnetisation end-states induce a Heisenberg pseudo-exchange interaction that governs both the inter-island coupling and the resultant array reversal process. Symmetry reduction gives rise to anisotropies and array-corner mediated avalanche reversals through a cascade of nearest-neighbour (NN) islands. The symmetries of the anisotropy axes are related to those of the geometrical array but are misaligned to the array axes as a result of the correlated interactions between neighbouring islands. The NN dipolar coupling is reduced by decreasing the island size and, using this property, we track the transition from the strongly coupled regime towards the pure point dipole one and observe modification of the ferromagnetic array reversal process. Our results shed light on important aspects of the interactions in pinwheel ASI, and demonstrate a mechanism by which their properties may be tuned for use in a range of fundamental research and spintronic applications., Comment: 14 pages, 13 figures; post revision

Topology is known to stabilize rather exotic states in condensed matter and in magneticmaterials. [...]

Magnetic skyrmions are topologically non-trivial nanoscale objects. Their topology, which originates in their chiral domain wall winding, governs their unique response to a motion-inducing force. When subjected to an electrical current, the chiral winding of the spin texture leads to a deflection of the skyrmion trajectory, characterised by an angle with respect to the applied force direction. This skyrmion Hall angle is predicted to be skyrmion diameter-dependent. In contrast, our experimental study finds that the skyrmion Hall angle is diameter-independent for skyrmions with diameters ranging from 35 to 825 nm. At an average velocity of 6 ± 1 ms−1, the average skyrmion Hall angle was measured to be 9° ± 2°. In fact, the skyrmion dynamics is dominated by the local energy landscape such as materials defects and the local magnetic configuration., Magnetic skyrmions are promising objects for future spintronic devices. However, a better understanding of their dynamics is required. Here, the authors show that in contrast to predictions the skyrmion Hall angle is independent of their diameter and motion is dominated by disorder and skyrmion-skyrmion interactions in the system.

Designing and constructing model systems that embody the statistical mechanics of frustration is now possible using nanotechnology. We have arranged nanomagnets on a two-dimensional square lattice to form an artificial spin ice, and studied its fractional excitations, emergent magnetic monopoles, and how they respond to a driving field using X-ray magnetic microscopy. We observe a regime in which the monopole drift velocity is linear in field above a critical field for the onset of motion. The temperature dependence of the critical field can be described by introducing an interaction term into the Bean-Livingston model of field-assisted barrier hopping. By analogy with electrical charge drift motion, we define and measure a monopole mobility that is larger both for higher temperatures and stronger interactions between nanomagnets. The mobility in this linear regime is described by a creep model of zero-dimensional charges moving within a network of quasi-one-dimensional objects., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

Magnetic domain walls (DWs) in perpendicularly magnetised thin films are attractive for racetrack memories, but technological progress still requires further reduction of the operationing currents. To efficiently drive these objects by the means of electric current, one has to optimize the damping-like torque which is caused by the spin Hall effect (SHE). This not only requires a high net spin Hall angle but also the presence of a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) to produce magnetic textures sensitive to this type of the torque. In this work, we explore the coexistence and importance of these two phenomena in epitaxial Pt/Co/Pt

For over ten years, arrays of interacting single-domain nanomagnets, referred to as artificial spin ices, have been engineered with the aim to study frustration in model spin systems. Here, we use Fresnel imaging to study the reversal process in 'pinwheel' artificial spin ice, a modified square ASI structure obtained by rotating each island by some angle about its midpoint. Our results demonstrate that a simple 45{\deg} rotation changes the magnetic ordering from antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic, creating a superferromagnet which exhibits mesoscopic domain growth mediated by domain wall nucleation and coherent domain propagation. We observe several domain-wall configurations, most of which are direct analogues to those seen in continuous ferromagnetic films. However, novel charged walls also appear due to the geometric constraints of the system. Changing the orientation of the external magnetic field allows control of the nature of the spin reversal with the emergence of either 1-D or 2-D avalanches. This unique property of pinwheel ASI could be employed to tune devices based on magnetotransport phenomena such as Hall circuits.

To advance the use of thermally-activated magnetic materials in device applications it is necessary to examine their behaviour on the localised scale in operando conditions. Equi-atomic FeRh undergoes a magnetostructural transition from an antiferromagnetic (AF) to a ferromagnetic (FM) phase above room temperature (~ 75 to 105 {\deg}C) and hence is considered a very desirable material for the next generation of novel nanomagnetic or spintronic devices. For this to be realised, we must fully understand the intricate details of AF to FM transition and associated FM domain growth on the scale of their operation. Here we combine in-situ heating with a comprehensive suite of advanced transmission electron microscopy techniques to investigate directly the magnetostructural transition in nano-scale FeRh thin films. Differential phase contrast imaging visualizes the stages of FM domain growth in both cross-sectional and planar FeRh thin films as a function of temperature. Small surface FM signals are also detected due to interfacial strain with the MgO substrate and Fe deficiency after HF etching of the substrate, providing a directional bias for FM domain growth. Our work provides high resolution imaging and quantitative measurements throughout the transition, which were previously inaccessible, and offers new fundamental insight into their potential use in magnetic devices.

Chiral domain walls in ultrathin perpendicularly magnetised layers have a N\'{e}el structure stabilised by a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) that is generated at the interface between the ferromagnet and a heavy metal. Different interface materials or properties are required above and below a ferromagnetic film in order to generate the structural inversion asymmetry needed to ensure that the DMI arising at the two interfaces does not cancel. Here we report on the magnetic properties of epitaxial Pt/Co/Au$_x$Pt$_{1-x}$ trilayers grown by sputtering onto sapphire substrates with 0.6~nm thick Co. As $x$ rises from 0 to 1 a structural inversion asymmetry is progressively generated. We characterise the epilayer structure with x-ray diffraction and cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy, revealing (111) stacking. The saturation magnetization falls as the proximity magnetisation in Pt is reduced, whilst the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy $K_\mathrm{u}$ rises. The micromagnetic DMI strength $D$ was determined using the bubble expansion technique and also rises from a negligible value when $x=0$ to $\sim 1$~mJ/m$^2$ for $x = 1$. The depinning field at which field-driven domain wall motion crosses from the creep to the depinning regime rises from $\sim 40$ to $\sim 70$~mT, attributed to greater spatial fluctuations of the domain wall energy with increasing Au concentration. Meanwhile, the increase in DMI causes the Walker field to rise from $\sim 10$ to $\sim 280$~mT, meaning that only in the $x = 1$ sample is the steady flow regime accessible. The full dependence of domain wall velocity on driving field bears little resemblance to the prediction of a simple one-dimensional model, but can be described very well using micromagnetic simulations with a realistic model of disorder. These reveal a rise in Gilbert damping as $x$ increases.

The Dresselhaus spin-orbit interaction is expected to perturb the quantum spin Hall phase predicted to arise within InAs/GaSb coupled quantum wells. To gain a greater understanding of this interaction, the spin-orbit coupling in two InAs/GaSb coupled quantum well samples, grown along the [001] axis, was investigated along three different in-plane crystallographic axes. By measuring the crystallographic axis dependence of the Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling, we can deconvolute this coupling from the spin splitting arising from axis-invariant Rashba spin-orbit coupling. We find that the Dresselhaus parameter is robust against an external gate bias and small changes in growth conditions, with an associated Dresselhaus parameter of (0.20 ± 0.08) × 10⁻¹¹eV m being measured across all samples and top gate bias conditions. In addition, we show that the asymmetries associated with the coupled quantum well structure, leading to Rashba spin-orbit coupling, are likely to play a dominant role in determining the spin-orbit interaction experienced by a quantum spin Hall state as the system is tuned towards charge neutrality.

The antiferromagnetic-to-ferromagnetic phase transition in B2-ordered FeRh is imaged in laterally confined nanopatterned islands using photoemission electron microscopy with x-ray magnetic circular dichroism contrast. The resulting magnetic images directly detail the progression in the shape and size of the FM phase domains during heating and cooling through the transition. In 5-\ud μ\ud m\ud -square islands this domain development during heating is shown to proceed in three distinct modes—nucleation, growth, and merging—each with subsequently greater energy costs. In 0.5-\ud μ\ud m\ud islands, which are smaller than the typical final domain size, the growth mode is stunted and the transition temperature is found to be reduced by 20 K. The modification to the transition temperature is found by high-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy to be due to a 100-nm chemically disordered edge grain present as a result of ion implantation damage during the patterning. FeRh has unique possibilities for magnetic memory applications; the inevitable changes to its magnetic properties due to subtractive nanofabrication will need to be addressed in future work in order to progress from sheet films to suitable patterned devices.

Spin-wave resonance measurements were performed in the mixed magnetic phase regime of a Pd-doped FeRh epilayer that appears as the first-order ferromagnetic-antiferromagnetic phase transition takes place. It is seen that the measured value of the exchange stiffness is suppressed throughout the measurement range when compared to the expected value of the fully ferromagnetic regime, extracted via the independent means of a measurement of the Curie point, for only slight changes in the ferromagnetic volume fraction. This behavior is attributed to the influence of the antiferromagnetic phase: inspired by previous experiments that show ferromagnetism to be most persistent at the surfaces and interfaces of FeRh thin films, we modelled the antiferromagnetic phase as forming a thin layer in the middle of the epilayer through which the two ferromagnetic layers are coupled up to a certain critical thickness. The development of this exchange stiffness is then consistent with that expected from the development of an exchange coupling across the magnetic phase boundary, as a consequence of a thickness dependent phase transition taking place in the antiferromagnetic regions and is supported by complimentary computer simulations of atomistic spin-dynamics. Artificial Spin Ice (ASI), consisting of a two dimensional array of nanoscale magnetic elements [1], provides a fascinating opportunity to observe the physics of out of equilibrium systems. Initial studies concentrated on the static, frozen state, whilst more recent studies have accessed the out-of-equilibrium dynamic, fluctuating state [2–4]. This opens up exciting possibilities such as the observation of systems exploring their energy landscape through monopole quasiparticle creation, potentially leading to ASI magnetricity, and to directly observe unconventional phase transitions. In this work [5] we have measured and analysed the magnetic relaxation of thermally active ASI systems by means of SQUID magnetometry. We fabricated and measured square Artificial Spin Ice samples formed by nanoimagnets made of Permalloy (Ni 80 Fe 20 with lateral dimensions of 68nm x 22nm, with two different thicknesses: 5nm and 6nm, and three different lattice spacings: 138nm, 175nm and 208nm, forming a total of six samples. We have investigated the effect of the interaction strength on the magnetization dynamics at different temperatures in the range where the nanomagnets are thermally active and have observed that they follow an Arrhenius-type Neel-Brown behaviour. An unexpected negative correlation of the average blocking temperature with the interaction strength is also observed, which is supported by Monte Carlo simulations. The magnetization relaxation measurements show faster relaxation for more strongly coupled nanoelements with similar dimensions. The analysis of the stretching exponents obtained from the measurements suggest 1-D chain-like magnetization dynamics. This indicates that the nature of the interactions between nanoelements lowers the dimensionality of the ASI from 2-D to 1-D. Finally, we present a way to quantify the effective interaction energy of a square ASI system, and compare it to the interaction energy calculated from a simple dipole model and also to the magnetostatic energy computed with micromagnetic simulations.

Epitaxial films of the B20-structure compound Fe1−yCoyGe were grown by molecular beam epitaxy on Si (111) substrates. The magnetization varied smoothly from the bulklike values of one Bohr magneton per Fe atom for FeGe to zero for nonmagnetic CoGe. The chiral lattice structure leads to a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI), and the films' helical magnetic ground state was confirmed using polarized neutron reflectometry measurements. The pitch of the spin helix, measured by this method, varies with Co content y and diverges at y∼0.45. This indicates a zero crossing of the DMI, which we reproduced in calculations using first-principles methods. We also measured the longitudinal and Hall resistivity of our films as a function of magnetic field, temperature, and Co content y. The Hall resistivity is expected to contain contributions from the ordinary, anomalous, and topological Hall effects. Both the anomalous and topological Hall resistivities show peaks around y∼0.5. Our first-principles calculations show a peak in the topological Hall constant at this value of y, related to the strong spin polarization predicted for intermediate values of y. Our calculations predict half-metallicity for y=0.6, consistent with the experimentally observed linear magnetoresistance at this composition, and potentially related to the other unusual transport properties for intermediate value of y. While it is possible to reconcile theory with experiment for the various Hall effects for FeGe, the large topological Hall resistivities for y∼0.5 are much larger than expected when the very small emergent fields associated with the divergence in the DMI are taken into account.

The chemically ordered B2 phase of equiatomic FeRh is known to absorb or evolve a significant latent heat as it traverses its first-order phase transition in response to thermal, magnetic, and mechanical drivers. This attribute makes FeRh an ideal magnetocaloric material testbed for investigation of relationships between the crystalline lattice and the magnetic spins, which are especially experimentally accessible in thin films. In this work, epitaxial FeRh films of nominal 30 nm and 50 nm thicknesses with out-of-plane c-axis orientation were sputter-deposited at high temperature onto (0 0 1)-MgO or (0 0 0 1)-Al2O3 substrates and capped with Al, Au, Cr, or W after in situ annealing at 973 K to promote CsCl-type chemical order. In this manner a controlled strain state was invoked. Experimental results derived from laboratory and synchrotron x-ray diffraction combined with magnetometry indicate that the antiferromagnetic (AF)—ferromagnetic (FM) magnetostructural phase transformation in these films may be tuned over an ~50° range (373 K–425 K) through variation in the c/a ratio derived from lattice strain delivered by the substrate and the capping layers. These results supply fundamental information that might be used to engineer the magnetocaloric working material in new system designs by introducing targeted values of passive strain to the system.

Antiferromagnetic materials present us with rich and exciting physics, which we can exploit to open new avenues in spintronic device applications. We explore perpendicularly magnetized exchange biased systems of Pt/Co/IrMn and Pt/Co/FeMn, where the crossover from paramagnetic to antiferromagnetic behavior in the IrMn and FeMn layers is accessed by varying the thickness. We demonstrate, through magneto-optical imaging, that the magnetic domain morphology of the ferromagnetic Co layer is influenced by the N${\'e}$el order of the antiferromagnet (AFM) layers. We relate these variations to the anisotropy energy of the AFM layer and the ferromagnet-antiferromagnet (FM-AFM) inter-layer exchange coupling. We also quantify the interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) in these systems by Brillouin light scattering spectroscopy. The DMI remains unchanged, within experimental uncertainty, for different phases of the AFM layers, which allows us to conclude that the DMI is largely insensitive to both AFM spin order and exchange bias. Understanding such fundamental mechanisms is crucial for the development of future devices employing chiral spin textures, such as N${\'e}$el domain walls and skyrmions, in FM-AFM heterostructures.

We report progress towards optimisation of artificial magnetic domain structures for efficient spin transfer torque domain wall (DW) motion. Co/Pt multilayer samples have been sputtered on (100) Si/SiO2 substrates and perpendicular magnetic anisotropy confirmed using polar magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE) measurements. The influence of the thickness of Co and Pt layers on the coercivity and switching behaviour was systematically investigated and the conditions established for realising well-suited structures with medium coercivity (∼100 Oe) and sharp switching fields. Optimised Co/Pt multilayer films have been lithographically patterned into nanowire devices for time-resolved extraordinary Hall effect (EHE) measurements. Our devices are based on 50 Ω coplanar waveguides incorporating single and double Hall cross structures. The coercivity of the region surrounding the Co/Pt Hall crosses was reduced by local focussed ion beam (FIB) irradiation allowing the controlled nucleation of domain walls at the edges of these regions by application of an appropriate field sequence. We describe polar MOKE experiments that show how DC currents lead to asymmetric switching of these artificial domains due to current-assisted DW motion across them.

Building upon the success and relevance of the 2014 Magnetism Roadmap, this 2017 Magnetism Roadmap edition follows a similar general layout, even if its focus is naturally shifted, and a different group of experts and, thus, viewpoints are being collected and presented. More importantly, key developments have changed the research landscape in very relevant ways, so that a novel view onto some of the most crucial developments is warranted, and thus, this 2017 Magnetism Roadmap article is a timely endeavour. The change in landscape is hereby not exclusively scientific, but also reflects the magnetism related industrial application portfolio. Specifically, Hard Disk Drive technology, which still dominates digital storage and will continue to do so for many years, if not decades, has now limited its footprint in the scientific and research community, whereas significantly growing interest in magnetism and magnetic materials in relation to energy applications is noticeable, and other technological fields are emerging as well. Also, more and more work is occurring in which complex topologies of magnetically ordered states are being explored, hereby aiming at a technological utilization of the very theoretical concepts that were recognised by the 2016 Nobel Prize in Physics. Given this somewhat shifted scenario, it seemed appropriate to select topics for this Roadmap article that represent the three core pillars of magnetism, namely magnetic materials, magnetic phenomena and associated characterization techniques, as well as applications of magnetism. While many of the contributions in this Roadmap have clearly overlapping relevance in all three fields, their relative focus is mostly associated to one of the three pillars. In this way, the interconnecting roles of having suitable magnetic materials, understanding (and being able to characterize) the underlying physics of their behaviour and utilizing them for applications and devices is well illustrated, thus giving an accurate snapshot of the world of magnetism in 2017. The article consists of 14 sections, each written by an expert in the field and addressing a specific subject on two pages. Evidently, the depth at which each contribution can describe the subject matter is limited and a full review of their statuses, advances, challenges and perspectives cannot be fully accomplished. Also, magnetism, as a vibrant research field, is too diverse, so that a number of areas will not be adequately represented here, leaving space for further Roadmap editions in the future. However, this 2017 Magnetism Roadmap article can provide a frame that will enable the reader to judge where each subject and magnetism research field stands overall today and which directions it might take in the foreseeable future. The first material focused pillar of the 2017 Magnetism Roadmap contains five articles, which address the questions of atomic scale confinement, 2D, curved and topological magnetic materials, as well as materials exhibiting unconventional magnetic phase transitions. The second pillar also has five contributions, which are devoted to advances in magnetic characterization, magneto-optics and magneto-plasmonics, ultrafast magnetization dynamics and magnonic transport. The final and application focused pillar has four contributions, which present non-volatile memory technology, antiferromagnetic spintronics, as well as magnet technology for energy and bio-related applications. As a whole, the 2017 Magnetism Roadmap article, just as with its 2014 predecessor, is intended to act as a reference point and guideline for emerging research directions in modern magnetism.

We study the spin-orbit interaction (SOI) in InAs/GaSb and InAs quantum wells. We show through temperature- and gate-dependent magnetotransport measurements of weak antilocalization that the dominant spin-orbit relaxation mechanism in our low-mobility heterostructures is Elliott-Yafet and not Dyakonov-Perel in the form of the Rashba or Dresselhaus SOI as previously suggested. We compare our findings with recent work on this material system and show that the SOI length lies within the same range. The SOI length may be controlled using an electrostatic gate, opening up prospects for developing spintronic applications.\ud \ud
