Abstract

Abstract Plastic pollution is distributed patchily around the world’s oceans. Likewise, marine organisms that are vulnerable to plastic ingestion or entanglement have uneven distributions. Understanding where wildlife encounters plastic is crucial for targeting research and mitigation. Oceanic seabirds, particularly petrels, frequently ingest plastic, are highly threatened, and cover vast distances during foraging and migration. However, the spatial overlap between petrels and plastics is poorly understood. Here we combine marine plastic density estimates with individual movement data for 7137 birds of 77 petrel species to estimate relative exposure risk. We identify high exposure risk areas in the Mediterranean and Black seas, and the northeast Pacific, northwest Pacific, South Atlantic and southwest Indian oceans. Plastic exposure risk varies greatly among species and populations, and between breeding and non-breeding seasons. Exposure risk is disproportionately high for Threatened species. Outside the Mediterranean and Black seas, exposure risk is highest in the high seas and Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZs) of the USA, Japan, and the UK. Birds generally had higher plastic exposure risk outside the EEZ of the country where they breed. We identify conservation and research priorities, and highlight that international collaboration is key to addressing the impacts of marine plastic on wide-ranging species.

Sampling seabirdsThe vastness of the worlds' oceans makes them difficult to monitor. Seabirds that forage and breed across oceans globally have been recognized as sentinels of ocean health. Sydemanet al.looked across seabird species of both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres and found varying patterns. Northern Hemisphere species exhibited greater signs of stress and reduced breeding success, indicative of low fish resources. Southern Hemisphere species showed less impact on reproductive output, suggesting that the fish populations there have thus far been less disturbed. The differences across hemispheres indicate different strategies for conservation, with active recovery needed in the north and enhanced protection in the south.Science, abf1772, this issue p.980

Abstract

Migratory marine species cross political borders and enter the high seas, where the lack of an effective global management framework for biodiversity leaves them vulnerable to threats. Here, we combine 10,108 tracks from 5775 individual birds at 87 sites with data on breeding population sizes to estimate the relative year-round importance of national jurisdictions and high seas areas for 39 species of albatrosses and large petrels. Populations from every country made extensive use of the high seas, indicating the stake each country has in the management of biodiversity in international waters. We quantified the links among national populations of these threatened seabirds and the regional fisheries management organizations (RFMOs) which regulate fishing in the high seas. 5. Distribution and patterns of migration of a tropical seabird community in the Eastern Indian Ocean

Abstract

We present the first detailed data on the distribution and migration patterns of four pelagic seabird species in the Eastern Indian Ocean—the Lesser Noddy (Anous tenuirostris melanops), Brown Noddy (Anous stolidus), Wedge-tailed Shearwater (Ardenna pacifica) and Bridled Tern (Onychoprion anaethetus) breeding at the Houtman Abrolhos and the Wedge-tailed Shearwater breeding at Varanus Island, Western Australia—tracked using geolocators during their respective non-breeding periods. Lesser Noddies remained largely in the general vicinity or slightly to the south of the colony in their non-breeding season (February–September). Brown Noddies spent their non-breeding period (March–August) in the Northwest Shelf area of Western Australia, around 950 km north of the colony. In contrast, Bridled Terns and most Wedge-tailed Shearwaters undertook extensive non-breeding migrations. Wedge-tailed Shearwaters occupied waters adjacent or to the north of their nesting sites or migrated 4200 km northwest into the equatorial central Indian Ocean near the Ninety East Ridge during the non-breeding season (late April to mid-November). These same areas were used during the sabbatical summer by Wedge-tailed Shearwaters that had deferred breeding. Bridled Terns spent their non-breeding period (April–September) in the Celebes Sea, 3800 km north of the Houtman Abrolhos. Abstract

Reproductive timing in many taxa plays a key role in determining breeding productivity , and is often sensitive to climatic conditions . Current climate change may alter the timing of breeding at different rates across trophic levels, potentially resulting in temporal mismatch between the resource requirements of predators and their prey . This is of particular concern for highertrophic-level organisms, whose longer generation times confer a lower rate of evolutionary rescue than primary producers or consumers. However, the disconnection between studies of ecological change in marine systems makes it difficult to detect general changes in the timing of reproduction5 . Here, we use a comprehensive meta-analysis of 209 phenological time series from 145 breeding populations to show that, on average, seabird populations worldwide have not adjusted their breeding seasons over time (−0.020 days yr−1 ) or in response to sea surface temperature (SST) (−0.272 days °C−1 ) between 1952 and 2015. However, marked between-year variation in timing observed in resident species and some Pelecaniformes and Suliformes (cormorants, gannets and boobies) may imply that timing, in some cases, is affected by unmeasured environmental conditions. Abstract

We compared 20 yr of seabird breeding data with oceanographic variables (sea level, sea-surface temperature) and a climate index (Southern Oscillation Index; SOI) for the lesser noddy Anous tenuirostris, brown noddy A. stolidus, sooty tern Onychoprion fuscata and wedge- tailed shearwater Ardenna pacifica at the Houtman Abrolhos, eastern Indian Ocean. We found that timing of breeding and performance of these species is related to climate variability, mediated by oceanographic conditions within the eastern boundary Leeuwin Current (LC). The 3 migratory species have breeding parameters which are correlated with sea level and the SOI, while the first egg date of the resident lesser noddy is correlated with SST during their pre-breeding phase. There was poor breeding performance for each species during El Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO) conditions; moreover, poor breeding success was recorded for all species outside of (ENSO events in the latter years of the study. In addition, breeding was delayed for all species dur- ing the time of the present study. The environmental conditions contributing to this appear to be fewer years of strong LC flow with associated high sea levels, warmer SSTs, stronger eddy energy and increased productivity. Migratory seabird species breeding at this location appear less able to respond to climate variability — and its influence upon prey availability — than the resident spe- cies. It is suggested that the resident lesser noddy may have an advantage due to its response to a localised environmental cue, SST, in the pre-breeding phase, which may be correlated with prey availability in the waters surrounding the Houtman Abrolhos.
