International audience; Ecosystem responsible aquaculture practices are today imperative to feed the world increasing population. Theculture of extractive species such as oyster with fed species such as fish is a promising solution to recycle wastestreams, which would be otherwise lost and discharged into the surrounding environment. In Mediterraneanearthen ponds, meagre (Argyrosomus regius), white seabream (Diplodus sargus) and grey mullet (Mugil cephalus)are three fish species of different trophic levels that are good candidates to be raised in integrated multi-trophicaquaculture (IMTA) pond with oysters (Magallana gigas) and macroalgae (Ulva flexuosa). Trophic links betweenspecies raised in IMTA ponds were inferred using the analysis of body fatty acid composition as well as in carbonand nitrogen stable isotopes. A combination of 3 treatments was tested: fish, oysters, phytoplankton and mac-roalgae (T1); fish, oysters and phytoplankton (T2); fish, phytoplankton and macroalgae (T3). Our results high-lighted that the three fish species were in competition for food sources as they mainly fed on commercial feedwhatever the treatment. However, grey mullet also consumed polychaetes that naturally grown in ponds.Macroalgae were not used by fish. In T1 and T2, oysters actively consumed the excess of phytoplankton. In T2,the absence of macroalgae reduce nutrient competition for phytoplankton growth and oysters have moreavailable food. In earthen ponds, the production of fish with macroalgae or fish with oyster should be privilegedcompared to usual semi-intensive fish polyculture as the presence of extractive species reduced fish wastes

International audience; Aquaculture is increasingly considered a major contributor to the growing demand for worldwide seafood production. Sustainability is becoming a key issue for aquaculture systems, with the objective to produce seafood with lower environmental impacts and that is economically viable and socially fair. In the context of the SIMTAP project, a multi-attribute model called DEXiAqua was developed. DEXiAqua uses the DEX method to assess the sustainability of aquaculture systems via indicators from technical domains and reference methods (i.e., life cycle assessment, life cycle costing, social life cycle assessment, and emergy accounting) selected and organized by the partners in the SIMTAP project. The DEX method consists of building an attribute tree that is organized to characterize a complex problem. Qualitative or quantitative indicators are measured at the end of each branch of the tree. The value of each indicator is translated into a qualitative scale for the associated attribute via threshold values. Weighted utility functions are used to build attributes from sub-attributes until the attribute of overall sustainability is reached. DEXiAqua was applied to a case study of salmon farming in France, which illustrated its ability to assess overall sustainability and help identify ways to improve the production system by identifying environmental, social, and economic hotspots. More case studies are required to apply DEXiAqua to a variety of systems with technical and contextual differences, which could result in changing attribute weights to adapt it better to different contexts.

International audience; Integrated multi-trophic aquaculture (IMTA) is a way to help preserve the environment while maintaining a good level of total production. An ecologically semi-intensive pond system was designed in which a polyculture fishpond was associated with a lagoon planted with macrophytes to bioremediate the water. The properties of this “semi-intensive coupled” system (SIC) were compared to those of semi-intensive (SI) and extensive (E) systems, each of which was contained in a single fishpond with the same fish polyculture (common carp (Cyprinus carpio), roach (Rutilus rutilus), and perch (Perca fluviatilis)) as SIC. E differed in that it had half the initial density of fish, and the fish were not fed. Fish growth performances, water quality (chemical and biological indicators), chlorophyll concentrations, and invertebrate production were measured. The systems were compared based on fish production performances and physicochemical and biological characteristics, and were then described using principal component analysis (PCA). Carp and roach in the two fed systems had higher growth performances than those in E. Compared to SI, the planted lagoon in SIC, induced a decrease of 15% in fish growth performances and of 83% in total chlorophyll concentration (a proxy for phytoplankton) but improved water quality (−34%, −60% and −80%, for the concentrations of total nitrogen, total phosphorus, and blue green algae (for micro-algae in class Cyanophyceae), respectively). According to the PCA, SIC clearly differed from SI in benthic macro-invertebrate production and concentrations of total nitrogen, total phosphorus, and brown algae (for micro-algae in class Dinophyceae or a branch of Bacillariophyta) in the water. SIC differed from E in oxygen parameters (dissolved and saturation), estimated annual zooplankton production, and pH. In conclusion, the properties of a lagoon reveal perspectives for environmentally friendly practices, while using biodiversity and secondary production in order to enhance fish production.

International audience; The discrete kernel-based regression approach generally provides pointwise estimates of count data that do not account for uncertainty about both parameters and resulting estimates. This work aims to provide probabilistic kernel estimates of count regression function by using Bayesian approach and then allows for a readily quantification of uncertainty. Bayesian approach enables to incorporate prior knowledge of parameters used in discrete kernel-based regression. An application was proposed on count data of condition factor of fish (K) provided from an experimental project that analyzed various pond management strategies. The probabilistic distribution of estimates were contrasted by discrete kernels, as a support to theoretical results on the performance of kernels. More practically, Bayesian credibility intervals of K-estimates were evaluated to compare pond management strategies. Thus, similarities were found between performances of semi-intensive and coupled fishponds, with formulated feed, in comparison with extensive fishponds, without formulated feed. In particular, the fish development was less predictable in extensive fishpond, dependent on natural resources, than in the two other fishponds, supplied in formulated feed.

Recirculating aquaculture systems (RASs) are seen as a promising technology to address the societal and environmental challenges of aquaculture. However, this technology is mainly used in intensive monoculture and little knowledge is available in polyculture approaches. In this study, we studied survival, growth performance, and behaviour of juvenile pikeperch Sander lucioperca reared in RAS either in monoculture or in polyculture (associated with sterlet Acipenser ruthenus or tench Tinca tinca or both sterlet and tench). After 30 days, the survival rate was 100 % for both monoculture and polyculture reared pikeperch. The mean final weights and the biomass gain of pikeperch were significantly lower for pikeperch alone (respectively 75.7 ± 2.7 g and 25.2 %) or with sterlet (respectively 81.0 ± 3.2 g and 38.3 %) than in combination with tench (respectively 85.7 ± 8.1 g and 50.1 %) or with sterlet and tench (respectively 90.3 ± 16.4 g and 51.5 %). Behavioural changes were also detected depending on the fish combination: there are fewer interactions between individuals of pikeperch when reared alone (0.34 ± 0.10) or in polyculture with sterlet (0.40 ± 0.02) in comparison to the other polyculture conditions (with tench [0.80 ± 0.20], or the two other species [0.70 ± 0.15]). The group structure also differed with a lower cohesion and homogeneity of the pikeperch group when they were reared in monoculture compared to polyculture modalities. No aggressive interaction was detected between pikeperch regardless of rearing modalities. In conclusion, due to positive effects on growth parameters and few behavioural changes in pikeperch, this study highlights that RAS polyculture is a relevant alternative production strategy for pikeperch compared to monoculture.

In temperate fish polyculture, common carp (Cyprinus carpio) and roach (Rutilus rutilus) are two fish species commonly reared in the same ponds. In the natural environment, these two species are considered omnivorous and may compete for food sources. However, few is known about their trophic behavior in polyculture ponds. The aim of our study was to use carbon and nitrogen stable isotope analysis to characterize trophic niche partitioning between both fish species reared in semi-intensive (fed) and extensive (non-fed) ponds. Fish growth performance was higher in semi-intensive than in extensive ponds. In semi-intensive ponds, δ13C and δ15N values of fish indicated that carp consumed mainly formulated feed, whereas roach also consumed natural food sources. In extensive ponds, δ13C and δ15N values of carp and roach indicated that both fish species did not use the same food sources. Regardless of the type of pond, standard ellipse areas, proxies of the estimated trophic niche size, were significantly smaller for carp than for roach and did not overlap, confirming that roach had more trophic plasticity than carp. Results of this study confirmed that carp and roach are good candidates to be rear in the same pond because they are able to adapt their trophic behavior to reduce trophic competition.

An aquaponics system (AS) is an integrated system that combines a recirculating aquaculture system and a hydroponics system (HS). It is designed to recover nutrients released from fish and transfer them to plants to provide a system more environmentally-friendly than the two systems working separately. As a result, several AS are under development, but little information is available about their overall performances. The aim of this study was to assess nutrient-use efficiency and environmental impacts of an AS, specifically a common carp-lettuce AS located in a greenhouse. Nutrient budgets of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) were calculated and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) was performed for the AS and for a lettuce Individual Hydroponics System (IHS), similar to the HS of the AS, operating in the greenhouse at the same time. The experiment was performed over a 52-day cycle, which corresponds to the growing time required to harvest marketable lettuce. The nutrient budgets were well balanced, with 24.6% of the N unaccounted-for, most likely due to N2 gas emission, and 6.6% of the P unaccounted-for, most likely due to having underestimated the quantity of sediment. At the beginning of the experiment, N represented 55.9%, 37.1% and 0.1% of the total N input in the formulated feed, stocked fish and lettuce seedlings, respectively. At the end of the experiment, N represented 47.6% and 0.4% of the total N input in the harvested fish and lettuce, respectively. At the beginning of the experiment, P represented 56.94%, 40.20% and 0.03% of the total P input in the formulated feed, stocked fish and lettuce seedlings, respectively. At the end of the experiment, P represented 51.52% and 0.42% of the total P input in the harvested fish and lettuce, respectively. LCA clearly indicated two environmental impact hotspots: the origin of nutrients and energy use. One kg of lettuce growth in the AS clearly had lower environmental impacts than that in the IHS for climate change, acidification, eutrophication, land competition and cumulative energy demand; however, a decrease in water dependence was not observed. The indicator for net primary production use highlighted the dependence of the AS on natural resources, especially fish meal and fish oil. Compared to the use of chemical nutrients in the IHS, the use of nutrients from formulated feed in the AS decreased climate change impact but increased the use of natural resources.

As aquaculture production is increasing considerably, it needs to become more environment-friendly. Based on a participatory process, an ecologically intensive pond system was designed to test three hypotheses: a combination of intensive and extensive areas provides more ecosystem services than an intensive or extensive area alone; coupling a planted lagoon with an intensive pond decreases the latter's environmental impacts and maintains or increases its fish productivity; and using formulated feed in polyculture increases growth of all fish species. To test these hypotheses, we designed a specific integrated multi-trophic aquaculture system composed of a polyculture of common carp (Cyprinus carpio), roach (Rutilus rutilus) and tench (Tinca tinca) and a lagoon planted with macrophytes to filter the water. This pond system was compared with “extensive” (unfed) and “semi-intensive” fishpond systems without a planted lagoon. We measured fish growth performances, water quality, chlorophyll concentrations and water and sediment nutrient contents. We also calculated the mass balance of nutrients. Concentrations of total nitrogen and phosphorus increased in sediments, indicating that nutrients were stored in the ponds, especially in planted lagoon; the planted lagoon decreased phytoplankton development, and limited blooms, but it slightly decreased fish growth performances compared to those in semi-intensive fishponds. The formulated feed supplied clearly increased fish growth performances and the survival rate, and seemed also to increase the use of available nutrients in ponds, which improved the production of overall fish biomass. In conclusion, the planted lagoon provides ecosystem services on nutrients cycling and habitat for natural biodiversity. Improving knowledge about nutrient cycles from formulated feed within the pond food web would be useful to increase the amounts of nutrients converted into fish biomass.

The question posed by this investigation was whether the spiritual content of dreams could be identified. The Casto Spirituality Scoring System (CSSS) was used to identify spiritual elements in 1,666 dream reports obtained in dream workshops in six countries. The CSSS considers the adjective “spiritual” as a hypothetical construct referring to one's focus on, and/or reverence, openness, and connectedness to something of significance believed to be beyond one's full understanding and/or individual existence. The research question was answered affirmatively. All dream reports were scored by two judges working independently for spiritual objects, settings, activities, emotions, and experiences, with an overall reliability of no less than .90 per item. The collection of dream reports with the highest percentage of spiritual content came from Brazil. This investigation includes quantitative analyses and examples of dream reports in each of the categories identified. It also discusses the therapeutic use of dreams with spiritual content.

The molecules CO2, CO, CS2, HF, DF, and N2O collectively yield laser action on thousands of discrete lines in the wavelength range 2.5 to 20 µm. Tuning can be made continuous over segments of that range by using gas pressures of 3 – 10 atm. Following review of the basic molecular processes and excitation schemes, experimental results are given for pulsed operation of high pressure CO2, N2O, and CS2 lasers.

Results of a feasibility study aimed at the development of a high resolution imaging interferometer (HRII) using Fourier transform spectroscopy are reported. The proposed instrument has three spectral ranges: a visible and near infrared (VNIR) from 0.45 to 1.0 micron, a short wave infrared (SWIR) from 1.0 to 2.5 microns, and the optional thermal infrared (TIR) from 8.0 to 12.5 microns. The spatial resolution on ground is proposed to be 40 m for VNIR and SWIR, and 200 m for TIR; the weight of the instrument will be less than 150 kg. The main conclusion of the study is that Fourier transform spectroscopy is well suited for imaging spectroscopy in space instrumentation.
