2. A photochemical determination of luminescence efficiency of upconverting nanoparticles

Abstract: Upconverting nanoparticles are a rising class of non-linear luminescent probes burgeoning since the beginning of the 2000’s, especially for their attractiveness in theranostics. However, the precise quantification of the light delivered remains a hot problem in order to estimate their impact on the biological medium. Sophisticated photophysical measurements under near infrared excitation have been developed only by few teams. Here, we present the first attempt towards a simple and cheap photochemical approach consisting of an actinometric characterization of the green emission of NaYF4:Yb,Er nanoparticles. Using the recently calibrated actinometer 1,2-bis(2,4-dimethyl-5-phenyl-3-thienyl)-3,3,4,4,5,5-hexafluoro-1-cyclopentene operating in the green region of the visible spectra, we propose a simple photochemical experiment to get an accurate estimation of the efficiency of these green-emitting “nanolamps”. The agreement of the collected data with the previous published results validates this approach.

3. Evaluation of upconverting nanoparticles towards heart theranostics.

Abstract: Restricted and controlled drug delivery to the heart remains a challenge giving frequent off-target effects as well as limited retention of drugs in the heart. There is a need to develop and optimize tools to allow for improved design of drug candidates for treatment of heart diseases. Over the last decade, novel drug platforms and nanomaterials were designed to confine bioactive materials to the heart. Yet, the research remains in its infancy, not only in the development of tools but also in the understanding of effects of these materials on cardiac function and tissue integrity. Upconverting nanoparticles are nanomaterials that recently accelerated interest in theranostic nanomedicine technologies. Their unique photophysical properties allow for sensitive in vivo imaging that can be combined with spatio-temporal control for targeted release of encapsulated drugs. Here we synthesized upconverting NaYF4:Yb,Tm nanoparticles and show for the first time their innocuity in the heart, when injected in the myocardium or in the pericardial space in mice. Nanoparticle retention and upconversion in the cardiac region did not alter heart rate variability, nor cardiac function as determined over a 15-day time course ensuing the sole injection. Altogether, our nanoparticles show innocuity primarily in the pericardial region and can be safely used for controlled spatiotemporal drug delivery. Our results support the use of upconverting nanoparticles as potential theranostics tools overcoming some of the key limitations associated with conventional experimental cardiology.

Abstract: Biocompatibility of nanoparticles is the most essential factor in their use in clinical applications. In this study, hyperbranched spermine (HS), hyperbranched spermine-polyethylene glycol-folic acid (HSPF), and hyperbranched spermine-polyethylene glycol-glucose (HSPG) were synthesized for DNA protection and gene delivery to breast cancer cells. The synthesis of HSPG and HSPF was confirmed using proton nuclear magnetic resonance (H-NMR), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) spectroscopy. The HS/DNA, HSPF/DNA, HSPG/DNA, and hyperbranched spermine-polyethylene glycol-folic acid/glucose/DNA (HSPFG/DNA) nanoparticles were prepared by combining different concentrations of HS, HSPF, and HSPG with the same amount of DNA. The ability of HS, HSPF, and HSPG to interact with DNA and protect it against plasm digestion was evaluated using agarose gel. Moreover, in vivo and in vitro biocompatibility of HSPF/DNA, HSPG/DNA, and HSPFG/DNA was investigated using MTT assay and calculating weight change and survival ratio of BALB/c mice, respectively. The results of agarose gel electrophoresis showed that HS, HSPF, and HSPG have the high ability to neutralize the negative charge of DNA and protect it against plasma degradation. The results of in vivo cytotoxicity assay revealed that the HSPF/DNA, HSPG/DNA, and HSPFG/DNA nanoparticles have good biocompatibility on female BALB/c mice. In vitro and in vivo transfection assays revealed that functionalization of the surface of HS using polyethylene glycol-folic acid (HSPF) and polyethylene glycol-glucose (HSPG) significantly increases gene delivery efficiency in vitro and in vivo. These results also showed that gene transfer using both HSPF and HSPG copolymers increases gene transfer efficiency compared to when only one of them is used. The HSPFG/DNA nanoparticles have a high potential for use in therapeutic applications because of their excellent biocompatibility and high gene transfer efficiency to breast cancer tissue.

5. Synthesis and emission dynamics of sub-3 nm single-emitter upconversion nanoparticles

Abstract: Reducing the size of upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) down to a few nm yields unique luminescent materials containing a very small number of emitters. Considering the bottom limit of one activator per particle, such ultrasmall UCNPs offer an unprecedented platform to study the contributions of the different energy transfer processes at play in upconversion luminescence, especially the role of cross relaxation. Maintaining detectable emission despite the limited number of emitting ions and the high surface-to-volume ratio requires suitable particle architectures. The preparation of Na(Gd-Yb)F4:Tm emissive sub-3 nm diameter -phase UCNPs was achieved using a gadolinium-rich composition, in situ mixing of the precursors NaOH and NH4F, and a microwave high-temperature cycling sequence that allowed precise control of the particle size and dispersity. These nanoparticles contain only a single Tm3+ activator ion, while coating of these cores with a NaGdF4 inert shell was performed to minimize the deleterious influence of surface quenching. The role of cross relaxation in upconversion luminescence was examined by time-resolved luminescence measurements using a combination of standard NIR excitation of the Yb3+ sensitizer and direct UV excitation of the Tm3+ activator. The fine tuning of the number of activators per particle via an optimized synthesis pathway along with an appropriate excitation scheme enabled us to select the operating cross relaxation processes and provide an accurate analysis of the different mechanisms at play in these model nanoparticles.

Abstract: International audience; Microalgae are a promising resource for biofuel production, although the lack of effective harvesting techniques limits their industrial use. In this context, flotation, and in particular dissolved air flotation (DAF), is an interesting separation technique that could drastically reduce harvesting costs and make biofuel-production systems more economically viable. But because of the repulsive interaction between cells and bubbles in water, the efficiency of this technique can be limited. To solve this problem, we propose here an original DAF process where bubbles are functionalized with a bio-sourced polymer able to specifically bind to the surface of cells, chitosan. In a first part, we modify chitosan by adding hydrophobic groups on its backbone to obtain an amphiphilic molecule, PO-chitosan, able to assemble at the surface of bubbles. Then, using a recently developed technique based on atomic force microscopy (AFM) combined with microfluidics, we probe the interactions between PO-chitosan coated bubbles and cells at the molecular scale; results show an enhanced adhesion of functionalized bubbles to cells (from 3.5 to 12.8 nN) that is pH-dependent. Separation efficiencies obtained in flotation experiments with functionalized bubbles are in line with AFM data, and a microalgae separation efficiency of approximately 60% could be reached in a single step. In addition, we also found that PO-chitosan could be used efficiently as a flocculant (nearly 100% of cells removed), and in this case AFM experiments revealed that the flocculation mechanism is based on hydrophobic interactions between cells and PO-chitosan. Altogether, this comprehensive study shows the interest of PO-chitosan to harvest cells in flotation or flocculation/flotation processes.

8. Synthesis and emission dynamics of ultrasmall (sub-3 nm) UCNPs containing a reduced number of emitters

Abstract: Reducing the size of rare earth, alkali metal fluoride crystals formulated as upconverting nanoparticles (UCNP) down to few nm can lead to unique luminescent devices due to a reduced number of emitters. The synthesis of such Na(Gd-Yb)F4:Tm nanocrystals is still challenging. The most critical issue is to keep detectable emission despite the high surface to volume ratio and the limited number of emitting ions. The preparation of sub-3 nm diameter emissive, ꞵ-phase UCNPs with few emitters was achieved using a gadolinium-rich composition, an in-situ mixing of the precursor (NaOH and NH4F), and a microwave high-temperature cycling sequence which allowed the precise control of the particle size and dispersity. Such particles can contain only a single activator ion (Tm3+). Coating of these core particles with a NaGdF4 inert shell was carried-out in order to moderate the surface quenching deleterious influence. The reduced number of activators offers an unprecedented platform to study the role of cross relaxation in the global luminescence. This was tackled by time resolved luminescence measurements using an original combination of standard Yb3+ sensitizer NIR-excitation and direct Tm3+ activator UV-excitation.

Abstract: International audience; Plastic pollution has become a significant concern in aquatic ecosystems, where photosynthetic microorganisms such as microalgae represent a major point of entry in the food chain. For this reason an important challenge is to better understand the consequences of plastic pollution on microalgae and the mechanisms underlying the interaction between plastic particles and cell's interfaces. In this study, to answer such questions, we developed an interdisciplinary approach to investigate the role of plastic microparticles in the aggregation of a freshwater microalgae species, Chlorella vulgaris. First, the biophysical characterization, using atomic force microscopy, of the synthetic plastic microparticles used showed that they have in fact similar properties than the ones found in the environment, with a rough, irregular and hydrophobic surface, thereby making them a relevant model. Then a combination of optical imaging and separation experiments showed that the presence of plastic particles in microalgae cultures induced the production of exopolysaccharides (EPS) by the cells, responsible for their aggregation. However, cells that were not cultured with plastic particles could also form aggregates when exposed to the particles after culture. To understand this, advanced single-cell force spectroscopy experiments were performed to probe the interactions between cells and plastic microparticles; the results showed that cells could directly interact with plastic particles through hydrophobic interactions. In conclusion, our experimental approach allowed highlighting the two mechanisms by which plastic microparticles trigger cell aggregation; by direct contact or by inducing the production of EPS by the cells. Because these microalgae aggregates containing plastic are then consumed by bigger animals, these results are important to understand the consequences of plastic pollution on a large scale.

Abstract: International audience; Planar Laser Induced Fluorescence with Inhibition (PLIF-I) is a powerful technique for studying the local gas/liquid oxygen mass transfer from a single rising bubble. However, to track oxygen in the liquid phase, it is necessary to use an oxygen sensitive luminescent probe, which needs to be unreactive toward the liquid phase. This article presents the synthesis of a fluorophore, [Ru(dpp-diSO3)3]Na4, to be used in liquid phases containing anionic molecules. To avoid electrostatic interactions, the fluorophore and the component present in the liquid phase need to have the same charge. Thanks to the use of this new luminescent probe in PLIF-I application, the influence of the chain length of anionic surfactants (dodecyl sulfate sodium salt and tetradecyl sulfate sodium salt) on oxygen mass transfer has been studied at different concentrations (1.3×10-3-2.5×10-7 mol.L-1). Results show that, for a given bulk concentration, the longer the hydrophobic chain, the greater the decrease in velocity and mass transfer coefficient. These results are compared with those of a previous paper dealing with length of cationic and nonionic surfactants and a correlation is proposed, taking account of the intrinsic properties of surfactants and their concentration in the liquid phase.

Abstract: International audience; The occurrence of micro- and nanoplastics is a major environmental problem. Especially for nanoplastics due to their easy bioavailability and unknown impact on living organisms. The monitoring of these extremely small particles during their ingestion, tissue translocation and transfer through the trophic chain remains very challenging. This study aims to develop an environmentally relevant model of luminescent micro- and nanoplastics. Lanthanide based upconverting nanophosphors able to convert highly penetrating and benign near infrared light into visible one were selected as luminescent tag for the plastic particles. First, lanthanide-based upconverting nanophosphors (20 nm) were incorporated in bulk polyethylene without modification of the polymer structure or morphology. Second, micrometric and nanometric particles were obtained after powdering. Two fractions were obtained with cascade filtration with average sizes of 5 μm and 150 nm and characterized in terms of size distribution, morphology and surface charge. The particles are very polydisperse with an irregular shape and a global negative charge; they exhibit morphological characteristics similar to those formed in the environment. Their luminescent properties upon NIR excitation at 980 nm open the possibility to track them in the tissues of organisms. The powdering method is very simple and compatible with many polymers pure or formulated. As a perspective, the use of weathered materials is possible with the proposed method and will allow the preparation of particles sharing additional properties with environmental micro- and nanoplastics.

Abstract: International audience; Hypothesis Recently, a low molecular weight hydrogel based on a carbohydrate alkyl amide has been successfully used as biomaterial for neuron cell culture and for 3D printing. Varying the molecular structure should make it possible to extend the library of carbohydrate low molecular weight hydrogels available for these applications and to improve their performances. Experiments Thirteen molecules easy to synthetize and designed to be potentially biocompatible were prepared. They are based on gluconamide, glucoheptonamide, galactonamide, glucamide, aliphatic chains and glycine. Their gelation in water was investigated in thermal conditions and wet spinning conditions, namely by dimethylsulfoxide-water exchange under injection. Findings Nine molecules give hydrogels in thermal conditions. By wet spinning, six molecules selfassemble fast enough, within few seconds, to form continous hydrogel filaments. Therefore, the method enables to shape by injection these mechanically fragile hydrogels, notably in the perspective of 3D printing. Depending on the molecular structure, persistent or soluble gel filaments are obtained. The microstructures are varied, featuring entangled ribbons, platelets or particles. In thermal gelation, molecules with a symmetrical polar head (galacto, glucoheptono) give flat ribbons and molecules with an asymmetrical polar head (gluco) give helical ribbons. The introduction of an extra glycine linker disturbs this trend.

Abstract: In order to achieve a significant size reduction to get ultrasmall upconverting nanoparticles (UCNPs) following a thermal coprecipitation pathway, we identified two critical points: the UCNP precursor mixing and high-temperature heating steps. Significant differences could be observed according to the way the inorganic sodium and fluoride sources were mixed to the rare-earth oleate before the high-temperature heating step. More interestingly, accurate monitoring of the high-temperature heating step using microwave (MW) dielectric heating yielded major improvement toward ultrasmall UCNPs. Thus, hexagonal, Tm-doped sub-5-nm UCNPs with an unusual Na(Yb-Gd)F4 matrix with 53% Yb were produced, displaying satisfactory luminescence. Noticeably, MW heating was achieved in a weakly MW-absorbing oleic acid (OA)/octadecene mixture, and the influence of the OA content composition on the MW heating efficiency is discussed in this report.

Abstract: International audience; Here in, we describe how video games, TV shows or movies have been used to provide an innovative framework for students to think about chemistry and chemical engineering. The main objective of this paper is to show how science can be linked with pop culture, to provide educators with recent materials to use in classrooms, and to discuss the benefits and limitations of such tools. The videogames Fortnite, Spiderman and Angry Birds, the TV shows Game of Thrones and Breaking Bad, the Marvel movies, and the animated programs Raving Rabbids and Dragon Ball are used to illustrate different approaches to engage with students and encourage them to learn in a more recreational environment.

Abstract: International audience; The purpose of this study is to present a learning activity that combines the simultaneous practice of geography and chemistry. It is a game activity based on the identification of national flags and colored molecules (from the famous CPK model), with an extension to the creation of imaginary flags from real, useful molecules for middle school, high school, and university classrooms. The goal of using a game is to motivate/involve learners, to encourage them to work and develop adaptability and responsiveness by practicing chemistry and geography components. The feedback received from students who participated in this exercise during the 2019−2020 academic year has been evaluated and shows an increase of motivation and critical thinking. The objective is to make students more aware of geopolitics, to engage discussion on their awareness of the world, and to prepare them to play an active role in it.

Abstract: Restricted and controlled drug delivery to the heart remains a challenge giving frequent off-target effects as well as limited retention of drugs in the heart. There is a need to develop and optimize tools to allow for improved design of drug candidates for treatment of heart diseases. Over the last decade, novel drug platforms and nanomaterials were designed to confine bioactive materials to the heart. Yet, the research remains in its infancy, not only in the development of tools but also in the understanding of effects of these materials on cardiac function and tissue integrity. Upconverting nanoparticles are nanomaterials that recently accelerated interest in theranostic nanomedicine technologies. Their unique photophysical properties allow for sensitive in vivo imaging that can be combined with spatio-temporal control for targeted release of encapsulated drugs.Here we synthesized upconverting NaYF4:Yb,Tm nanoparticles and show for the first time their innocuity in the heart, when injected in the myocardium or in the pericardial space in mice. Nanoparticle retention and upconversion in the cardiac region did not alter heart rate variability, nor cardiac function as determined over a 15-day time course ensuing the sole injection. Altogether, our nanoparticles show innocuity primarily in the pericardial region and can be safely used for controlled spatiotemporal drug delivery.Our results support the use of upconverting nanoparticles as potential theranostics tools overcoming some of the key limitations associated with conventional experimental cardiology.

Abstract: Upconverting nanoparticles are a rising class of non-linear luminescent probes burgeoning since the beginning of the 2000’s, especially for their attractiveness in theranostics. However, the precise quantification of the light delivered remains a hot problem in order to estimate their impact on the biological medium. Sophisticated photophysical measurements under near infrared excitation have been developed only by few teams. Here, we present the first attempt towards a simple and cheap photochemical approach consisting of an actinometric characterization of the green emission of NaYF4:Yb,Er nanoparticles. Using the recently calibrated actinometer 1,2-bis(2,4-dimethyl-5-phenyl-3-thienyl)-3,3,4,4,5,5-hexafluoro-1-cyclopentene operating in the green region of the visible spectra, we propose a simple photochemical experiment to get an accurate estimation of the efficiency of these green-emitting “nanolamps”. The agreement of the collected data with the previous published results validates this approach.

Abstract: Nonlinear effects in asymmetric synthesis are identified by a nonlinear relationship between the enantiomeric excess of the product versus that of the chiral catalyst. Such information is not always sufficient to reveal if the active catalyst acts in its monomeric or dimeric form. Numerical simulations of two kinetic models including monomer and dimer catalysis with a Michaelis–Menten-type reaction mechanism suggest that the nonlinear effects are mainly sensitive to an analogue of the Michaelis–Menten constant as well as to the diastereomeric energy difference between homochiral and heterochiral catalyst dimers. A practical monomer–dimer discrimination table is presented showing that the influence of the initial catalyst enantiomeric excess and the catalytic charge on the product enantiomeric excess and on the reaction half-time together with the assessment of the kinetic order of the prochiral substrate are sufficient to assess whether the active catalyst acts in its monomeric or dimeric form.

Abstract: A series of oxahelicenes composed of ortho/meta-annulated benzene/pyridine and 2H-pyran rings were synthesized on the basis of the cobalt(I)-mediated (or rhodium(I)- or nickel(0)-mediated) double, triple, or quadruple [2+2+2] cycloisomerization of branched aromatic hexa-, nona-, or dodecaynes, thus allowing the construction of 6, 9, or 12 rings in a single operation. The use of a flow reactor was found to be beneficial for the multicyclization reactions. The stereogenic centers present in some of the oligoynes steered the helical folding in such a way that the final oxa[9]-, [13]-, [17]- and [19]helicenes were obtained in both enantiomerically and diastereomerically pure form. Specifically, the oxa[19]helicenes beat the current record in the length of a helicene backbone. Single-molecule conductivity was studied by the mechanically controllable break-junction method with a pyridooxa[9]helicene.

23. Kinetic and Structural Aspects of Mirror-Image Symmetry Breaking in the Soai Reaction

Abstract: The mechanism of the Soai reaction remains a challenge for experimentalists and theorists. It appears to be much more complex than simple models describing asymmetric autocatalyis in generalized terms. Numerous oligomer species obeying the principles of chiral combinatorics are likely involved. A number of these intermediates have been either isolated or recognized by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) studies. A combination of kinetic analyses and density functional theory (DFT) calculations could shed some light on the deeper understanding of this asymmetric autocatalysis. A recent breakthrough was provided by the identification of X-ray structures of various oligomers. To rationalize its mechanism, kinetic modeling of the Soai reaction has been developed in two complementary directions: a structural approach validated by DFT calculations and a functional approach by numerical studies and the reproduction of experimental features. Recently, we introduced a new mechanistic feature related to the concept of kinetic proofreading. We showed that whatever the values of the kinetics parameters, an increase in the catalytic oligomer size from one to three lead to a higher tolerance to poorer chiral recognition between the diastereoisomers, which is a key element for asymmetric amplification and spontaneous symmetry breaking. In the present contribution, we also show that numerical simulation is useful to understand the ee amplification during the stepwise addition of aldehyde and organozinc in a typical Soai reaction experimental procedure. Also, we present a first modeling approach in respect to the observed high sensitivity of the Soai reaction towards chiral additives. Our model predicts that the aldehyde concentration plays the role of a bifurcation parameter inducing a transition from a racemic state to an optically active one. Our results also confirm that in such complex systems, kinetic orders must be handled with care.

Using an appropriate set of rate constants and quantum yields, we have evidenced an enhanced photo-responsiveness at a medium light intensity: the plot of the initial rate vs. light intensity is bell-shaped. This emergent phenomenon can be qualified as hormetic catalysis. The analysis of the chemical flows shows that a directional rotation occurs within the cyclic scheme. Non equilibrium conditions are provided by two independent sources: the chemical energy dissipation from the irreversible exergonic reaction and the steady transformation of light into heat by T-photochromism. A literature survey, showing that most of the required kinetic features are not so rare, let us anticipate its practical feasibility.

Abstract: International audience; A photo-controlled and quasi-reversible switch of the luminescence of hexadecylamine-coated ZnO nanocrystals (ZnO@HDA Ncs) is operated via a molecular photoswitch (dithienylethene, DTE). The interaction between the DTE switch and the ZnO@HDA Ncs is thoroughly investigated using NMR spectroscopy techniques, including DOSY and NOESY, showing that the DTE switch is weakly adsorbed at the surface of the Ncs through the formation of hydrogen bonds with HDA. Steady state and time-resolved luminescence quenching experiments show a complex behavior, related to the spatial distribution of the emitting defects in the Ncs. Analysis of the data using models previously developed for Ncs supports static quenching. Both isomeric forms (open or closed) of the DTE switch quench the emission of Ncs, the efficiency being more than ten times higher for the closed isomer. The mechanism of quenching is discussed and we show that quenching occurs mainly through resonant energy transfer for the closed isomer and through electron transfer for the open one. The HDA layer mediates the quenching efficiency as only defects located near the surface are quenched.

Abstract: The behavior of highly concentrated aqueous solutions of two thermoresponsive polymers poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAm) and poly(N-vinylcaprolactam) (PVCL) have been investigated by terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS). Measurements have been performed for concentrations up to 20 wt %, over a frequency range from 0.3 to 1.5 THz and for temperatures from 20 to 45 °C including the zone for lower critical solution temperature (LCST). THz-TDS enables the study of the behavior of water present in the solution (i.e., free or bound to the polymer). From these measurements, in addition to phase transition temperature, thermodynamic data such as variation of enthalpy and entropy can be inferred. Thanks to these data, further insights upon the mechanism involved during the dehydration phenomenon were obtained. These results were compared to the ones issued from dynamic light scattering, spectroscopy, or microscopy techniques to underline the interest to use THz-TDS as a powerful tool to characterize the behavior of thermoresponsive polymers in highly concentrated solutions.

Abstract: A UV/visible and pH-metric quantitative analysis of the spiropyran reversible photoacid 1 -MEH allowed us to determine the pK a 's of the open and closed forms, the rate constants of relaxation, the quantum yield of decolouration and the UV/visible spectra of the protonated and deprotonated open and closed isomers. The coupling between 1 -MEH and a selected pH-indicator acidochromic dye via proton exchange has also been analysed. The initial pH, stoichiometric ratio between the photoacid and the pH-indicator, light intensity and pK a range of the pH-indicator have been established to maximize the proton transfer from the photoacid donor to the pH-indicator acidochromic dye acceptor. When the pK a 's are matched, the two-component system behaves like a single photochromic dye. The proposed model explains why 1 -MEH photo-switches BromoCresol Green but not Methyl-Orange.

Abstract: cited By 2; International audience; The self-organization of tri-adamantyl (TAB) benzene molecules has been investigated using low temperature scanning tunneling microscopy (LT-STM). The molecular structures have also been studied using molecular modeling. In particular, these calculations have been performed on large areas (1000 nm2) from the atomic structure of the molecular building block, combining molecular dynamics (MD) and Monte-Carlo (MC) approaches. These investigations show that the structure of the molecule and its flexibility allow for the formation of different networks as a function of surface coverage. The calculations demonstrate that the stability of the largest structures is obtained through the increase of the interfacial energy induced by the rotation of the adamantyl groups, a behavior whose consequences explain the subtle contrasts observed in the experimental STM images.

Abstract: The thermal bleaching of the ring-closed colored isomer of a photochromic triangle terthiazole induced by a weak acid in acetonitrile was investigated from a kinetic point of view. A realistic model was proposed involving not less than nine species and thirteen elementary processes. Our studies highlight the importance of the transient monoprotonated species in the carbon–carbon bond weakening and confirm the role of the proton as catalyst for the ring opening. The origin of the sigmoid shape of the Absorbance vs time traces is discussed.

Abstract: The co-adsorption of three thiol compounds on gold, two of them being electroactive, yields a Self-Assembled Monolayer (SAM) the behaviour of which was studied by impedance spectroscopy. The two redox active thiols have been chosen to have a good miscibility in a supporting inert component, non-degenerate first-oxidation redox couples, and distinct heterogeneous electron transfer rate constant. However, in the ternary monolayer, the slowest process was found to be concentration dependent on the other redox site. This unexpected behaviour should thus be taken into account when using multi-component SAM as a support for integrated devices.

Abstract: Three derivatives of anthraquinone deposited on Cu(1 1 1) have been observed by STM at liquid nitrogen temperature. Adsorption of the three molecules is found to be strongly dependent on the end group (phenyl, thienyl and pyridyl) surrounding the anthraquinone central part. While adsorption of the bi-pyridyl compound yields single molecules on the copper surface, evaporation of the phenyl derivative leads to the formation of stable dimers. The bi-thienyl anthraquinone has an intermediate behaviour with dimer formation and single molecule adsorption. These findings are assumed to result from the polar character of the molecules and from the bond strength of the different substituents with the metallic surface.

Abstract: The electrochromic properties of dithienylethene derivates is a field of great importance and interest. In this manuscript we describe a potential molecular remote control system, which can be electrochemically triggered. Diferrocenyl compounds containing a diethylenene photoelectrochromic core with perhydro- and perfluorocyclopentene ring were prepared in order to induce a change in the chromic properties via an intramolecular electron-transfer reaction from the redox group to the photochromic core. The electrochemical behavior of open and closed isomers was thoroughly studied using photochemical, electrochemical, and spectroelectrochemical techniques. The first redox couple was typically assigned to the ferrocene for the open isomer. However, for the closed isomer, an electrocatalytic ring-opening process was observed for the perhydrocyclopentene ring, while a slightly different electrochemical process was observed for the perfluorocyclopentene system. Abstract: Because of its tetrahedral structure, spirobifluorene is an innovative molecule for molecular mechanics studies by means of scanning tunneling microscopy. On Cu(100), it was observed only anchored at defects because of its mobility at room temperature. To frustrate its diffusion, it was functionalized with phenyl and thiophene groups. Tetraphenylspirobifluorene is also mobile on Cu(100), whereas tetrathienylspirobifluorene is fixed in the middle of the terraces. This very different behavior is an original and unexpected result because both benzene and thiophene are reported to be weakly bound to Cu(100) with almost the same adsorption energy.

Redox properties of model compounds have been explored in order to explain this feature: all molecules can be oxidized and the resulting radical cations may undergo ring closure or opening depending on its substituents.

The structure of large self-assembled domains reveals that the intermolecular interactions between adamantyl peripheral groups dominate film growth. At very low coverage, the molecules can exhibit a certain instability for negative bias voltages which induces a partial rotation. Manipulations of single objects using the STM tip are used to create small clusters of two or three molecules. The formed structures can be obtained and manipulated provided that the flexible adamantyl moieties of neighbouring molecules are brought in close contact promoting a robust mechanical anchoring.

Abstract: The aggregation of two hydrophobic spirooxazine dyes has been investigated in water–acetonitrile binary solvent and in presence of sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS). For the thermochromic molecule 1, aggregation is spontaneous and occurs when a large amount of water is added to an acetonitrile solution of the dye. There exists an optimum value of the water–acetonitrile molar ratio giving rise to a sharper H-aggregate visible absorption spectrum. Kinetic analysis of the H-aggregate formation has shown that there is an increase in the sticking probability of the monomers, as the aggregates grow. A subtle interplay between H- and J- aggregation was witnessed by adding small amounts of SDS. This change is so sensitive that this system could be the basis of a new chemosensory technique for SDS assessment. Excess of surfactant induces the collapse of the aggregates and the re-dissolution of the dye under the form of a merocyanine–SDS ion-pair. For the spirooxazine 2, aggregation must be photo-induced. Comparison of the spectral evolutions of the two dyes in the presence of SDS has shown that the opening of the closed spirooxazines paves the way to the merocyanine–SDS ion-pair formation. Reversibility of the aggregation has been suggested to occur when the aggregate size is still small. Finally, reversibility has been checked experimentally by precipitate re-dissolution and spirooxazine recovery. Possible structures and reactivity of the H- and J-aggregates have been deduced.

41. Synthesis and Properties of Dinuclear Complexes with a Photochromic Bridge: An Intervalence Electron Transfer Switching 'On' and 'Off'

Abstract: Two cyclometallated Ru(bpy)2(pp) units (bpy = 2,2′-bipyridine; pp = 2-phenylpyridine) were grafted via ethynyl spacers onto the photochromic cores of the norbornadiene or dithienylethene families, to give the bimetallic ruthenium(II) complexes 1 and 2a, respectively. Two aspects of these compounds were studied: (i) photoisomerization (norbornadiene to quadricyclane for 1, open form to closed form of the dithienylethene core for 2a), and (ii) intervalence transitions in the mixed-valence ruthenium(II−III) state, with determination of the metal−metal electronic coupling (Vab) by Hush’s equation. Moderate metal−metal electronic coupling (0.068 eV) was found for 1, but 1 cannot be isomerized into the quadricyclane form. On the other hand, 2a can be reversibly photoisomerized to the closed form 2b. An iodine(III) reagent, the triflate salt of bis(pyridyl)phenyliodonium, was used for the oxidation of 2a and 2b. During these oxidations, an intervalence band due to intramolecular electron transfer between ruthenium(II) and ruthenium(III) was detected for 2b, but not for 2a. This switching “on” or “off” of the intervalence transition is rationalized with extended Huckel calculations. Finally, the molecular orbital calculation explains the observed tendency of the closed form 2b to reopen upon oxidation.

Abstract: A dinuclear ruthenium photochromic complex, based on the dithienylperfluorocyclopentene unit, has been prepared following a building block approach, by palladium-catalyzed Sonogashira-Hagihara cross-couplings. At 254 nm, a photostationary state occurs, characterized by 75% of ring closure. Upon oxidation to mixed-valence species, the open isomer displays no intervalence (IV) band, while for the closed one, an IV band corresponding to a 0.025 eV electronic coupling parameter is observed, as well as a thermal reopening of the cyclohexadiene moiety. Extended Huckel calculations have been performed on model complexes in order to rationalize this efficient switching effect, and also the unexpected unstability of the oxidized closed isomer.

Abstract: 2-ferrocenylanthracene and 2,6-diferrocenylanthraccnc have been prepared by a Bachmann- Gomberg reaction between the bis(diazonium) derivative of anthraquinone and ferrocene, followed by a reduction with aluminium cyclohexanolate. These two compounds give Diels-Alder adduces with tetracyanoethylene. The comparative study of intervalence electron transfer between reduced and oxidized ferrocene sites has been performed for 2,6-diferrocenylanthracene and its adduct. In the latter, the electronic interaction (Vab) decreases, but does not vanish, despite the loss of conjugated character. An orbital interpretation of the weakness of this effect is proposed.

Abstract: The three isomers of diferrocenylbenzenes (ortho, 1o; meta, 1m; para, 1p) as well as 5-substituted derivatives of m-diferrocenylbenzene with R = NH2 (2), Cl (3), CH3 (4), CN (5), NO2 (6), and N(CH3)33+ (7) have been prepared. Crystal structures of 1o, 3, and 5 have been solved. In 3 and 5, the cyclopentadienyl rings are nearly parallel to the benzene mean planes with angles ranging from 9.99(5)° to 14.74(5)°. One ferrocene group is above and the other below the mean molecular plane. For 1o, there is an important twist between the benzene and cyclopentadiene rings (68.6(8)° and 32.5(8)°) for steric reasons. Controlled potential electrolysis yields the mixed-valence ferrocene/ferrocenium species in comproportionation equilibrium with homovalent species. Intervalence transitions have been observed and corrected from comproportionation. From the intervalence band parameters, metal−metal couplings (Vab) are calculated using Hush's equation. Abstract: A thermally irreversible dithienylethene (DTE) photochrom can be turned into a thermally reversible one in presence of Cu(II) triflate. A ring opening (DTEC closed→DTEO open) occurs through the formation of a copper-containing fast transient intermediate. Stopped-flow experiments monitored at 410 and 780 nm have allowed to show that the stoichiometry of this intermediate is DTE/Cu=1:1. At longer monitoring times (i.e., several seconds after mixing), the intermediate undergoes a slow decay while the residual DTEC closed form opens. A joint detailed kinetic and electrochemical analysis has unveiled a proton catalysis scenario in which electron transfer between DTEC and Cu(II), ligand exchange, protonation-deprotonation equilibria of the cation radicals and ring opening are embedded into two main reaction cycles. At the beginning of the reaction, Cu(II) is reduced into Cu(I) and DTE is degraded without ring opening. Then, as the reaction progresses, the triflic acid released from the Cu(II) reduction switches-on a propagation cycle during which ring opens without any more Cu(II) consumption. Cyclic voltammetry, spectro-electrochemical measurements, delayed photocoloration experiments in presence of Cu(II) and acid-base additions have confirmed the main features of the proton catalysis.

Abstract: The electronic and structural properties of large molecules composed of a central hexa-phenylbenzene core surrounded by six adamantyl groups (Ad6HPB) adsorbed on Ag(111) have been investigated using low temperature scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), adsorption and image calculations. On large 2D domains, the molecular organization displays two lattices. In one of them, molecules are slightly nested as a result of their relative flexibility during packing. These compounds also exhibit contrast variations in terms of used bias voltage in the self-assembled domains as well as in single molecule observations. This is attributed to the peculiar electronic properties of Ad6HPB and to the role of peripheral groups.

49. Photomodulation of the proton affinity and acid gated photochromism of a novel dimethylaminophenyl thiazole diarylethene

Abstract: The acid-gated photochromism and the photomodulation of fluorescence and proton affinity of a novel dimethylaminophenyl thiazole diarylethene in MeCN were investigated from a kinetic point of view. Photomodulation of the proton affinities has been estimated from acid titrations and numerical modelling of the acid induced T-photochromism. The basicities of the thiazole and dimethylamino protonation sites are different by only one pK unit. Upon ring- closure, their relative proton affinities are reversed. Our investigations underline the role of the thiazole protonation in the carbon-carbon bond weakening of the closed form and validate the role of the proton as catalyst in the gated T-photochromism.

Abstract: The present study quantitatively analyses the gated photochromism and the acidity photomodulation properties of a diacid dithienylethene compound. Photoisomerisation between the open and closed isomers was investigated by UV/visible and 1H NMR spectroscopy. It was found that the photocyclisation quantum yield of the diacid form was remarkably high (around 90 %). Partial neutralisation of the open isomer revealed a gated photochromism as the photocyclisation quantum yield of the mono- and dianion were 50 and 67 %, respectively. A considerable photomodulation of the acidity was observed: the closed isomer is more acid than the open one by more than one pKa unit. This effect has been shown to be exploitable for a reversible photo-acid generation. This is the first time that a complete quantitative investigation that allows for the determination of the main photochromic, spectral and thermodynamic parameters of a base-sensitive photochromic diarylethene has been carried out.
