Abstract

The design and analysis of a series-fed, foldable microstrip array antenna for radiometer applications is presented. The array antenna is composed of two equal sub arrays. Each sub array consists of a series of patches connected together through segments of microstrip lines. The sub arrays are fed 180 degree out of phase to ensure a symmetric radiation pattern. The design approach, is accomplished using the IE3D code that utilizes the method of moments. All experimental and simulated data are presented and discussed.

Each sub array consists of an equal number of microstrip patches all connected together through a series microstrip line. The first element of each sub array is coaxially fed but 180 degree out of phase. This approach ensures a symmetric radiation pattern. The design approach, is accomplished using the IE3D code that utilizes the method of moments. All experimental and simulated data are presented and discussed.

Abstract

This paper discusses the design of a new conical log spiral antenna that can operate at UHF frequencies. The antenna constitutes a suitable candidate for deployment on top of a 6U CubeSat system. The conical log spiral is designed to operate between 300 MHz and 600 MHz and exhibit circular polarization as well as an acceptable gain. The antenna is also required to satisfy size constraints by being compactly folded during launch and deployed successfully once in orbit.

42. Tunable electrically small UHF PIFA-as-a-package

Abstract

A tunable electrically small PIFA-as-a-package antenna for miniature wireless device applications has been developed using conventional printed circuit board processing techniques and commercial-off-the-shelf surface mount switches. The design is scalable to any frequency and form factor, while enabling adaptive tuning of the characteristically narrow band resonance of electrically small antennas. Our UHF prototype measures less than 2" (.08lambda) on its longest side and provides approximately -9 dBi of gain from 419-472 MHz. Simulated and measured results will be discussed in the presentation

Abstract

Antenna design for small satellites such as CubeSats constitute a challenge for designers especially at UHF frequencies. The small size of the CubeSat (10 cm x 10 cm x 10 cm) imposes several constraints on the antenna design. Extreme packaging ratios and advanced deployment mechanisms have to be employed to cater for UHF antennas on a CubeSat platform.
