A reliable process for compressing hydrogen and for removing all contaminants is that of the metal hydride thermal compression. The use of metal hydride technology in hydrogen compression applications though, requires thorough structural characterization of the alloys and investigation of their sorption properties. The samples have been synthesized by induction - levitation melting and characterized by Rietveld analysis of the X-Ray diffraction (XRD) patterns. Volumetric PCI (Pressure-Composition Isotherm) measurements have been conducted at 20, 60 and 90 oC, in order to investigate the maximum pressure that can be reached from the selected alloys using water of 90oC. Experimental evidence shows that the maximum hydrogen uptake is low since all the alloys are consisted of Laves phases, but it is of minor importance if they have fast kinetics, given a constant volumetric hydrogen flow. Hysteresis is almost absent while all the alloys release nearly all the absorbed hydrogen during desorption. Due to hardware restrictions, the maximum hydrogen pressure for the measurements was limited at 100 bars. Metal hydrides (MH) are often preferred to absorb and desorb hydrogen at ambient temperature and pressure with a high volumetric density. These hydrogen storage alloys create promising prospects for hydrogen storage and can solve the energetic and environmental issues. In the present research work, the goal of our studies is to find the influence of partial substitution of small amounts of vanadium and tantalum on the hydrogenation properties of TiFe0.7-xMn0.3Vx (x=0.05, and 0.1) and Ti1-yTayFe0.7Mn0.3 (y=0.2, and 0.4) alloys, respectively. The nominal compositions of these materials are TiFe0.65Mn0.3V0.05, TiFe0.6Mn0.3V0.1, Ti0.8Ta0.2Fe0.7Mn0.3, and Ti0.6Ta0.4Fe0.7Mn0.3. All samples were synthesized by arc-melting high purity elements under argon atmosphere. The structural and microstructural properties of the samples were studied by using XRD and SEM, respectively, while the corresponding microchemistry was determined by obtaining EDS measurements at specific regions of the samples. Mapping was obtained in order to investigate atomic distribution in microstructure. Moreover, to ensure the associations between the properties and structure, all samples were examined by an optical microscope for accessional characterization. From all these microscopic examinations a variety of photomicrographs were taken with different magnifications. The hydrogenation properties were obtained by using a Magnetic Suspension Balance (Rubotherm). In this equipment, the hydrogen desorption and re-absorption, can be investigated at constant hydrogen pressures in the range of 1 to 20 MPa (flow-through mode). We examine the response of the thermosphere to the impact of solar wind dynamic pressure enhancements using observations and global magneto-hydrodynamics (MHD) simulations by the OpenGGCM model. Combining neutral density observations from the Challenging Minisatellite Payload (CHAMP) and the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) satellites with simultaneous Poynting flux measurements from the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) F16, we find that thermospheric density as well as downward Poynting flux intensified shortly after a sudden enhancement of the solar wind dynamic pressure. The intensification manifested mostly on the dayside high-latitude region with peak intensity in the vicinity of the noon and prenoon cusp. OpenGGCM modeling results show that the ionospheric Joule heating increased abruptly in response to the sudden enhancement of the dynamic pressure in the same region as the observed Poynting flux and neutral density enhancements. The modeling results show that the enhanced Joule heating coincides, both in time and location, with the appearance of a pair of high-latitude localized field-aligned currents (FACs) in the cusp region. The FACs intensified and extended azimuthally. Coincidental with the solar wind dynamic pressure enhancement, the y component of the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) By became strongly positive and, in addition, had some large fluctuations. We explore the separate and combined effects of the dynamic pressure and IMF By perturbations, with specifically designed simulation experiments that isolate the effect of each solar wind parameter. We find that the dynamic pressure enhancement is the primary source for the Joule heating and neutral density enhancements, but the IMF By modulates the level of enhancement.
