High-brightness coherent light source is at the heart of optical technology and yet challenging to achieve. Here, we propose an unconventional approach that utilizes the "forbidden chemical" in optical thermodynamics to convert any incoming light beam into a high-brightness, high-spatial-coherence light beam in multimode nonlinear optical waveguide systems, in contrast to evaporative cooling in cold atoms where the brightness is instead reduced. This approach is powered by the fact that light in nonlinear multimode structures undergoes an irreversible thermalization process triggered by its own photon-photon interactions. Moreover, the key characteristics in statistical mechanics, the optical temperature and chemical potential can be widely tuned in photonic systems. As such, when the chemical potential of an optical reservoir is designed to locate at the forbidden band of the probe bosonic system, it can never reach thermal equilibrium with the probe hence endlessly pumping the probe system towards an enhanced brightness and spatial coherence. This amplified cooling of light beam is revealed via both Onsager's irreversible thermodynamics theory and numerical simulations. Akin to this effect, the inverse photonic transport currents emerge due to the negative off-diagonal Onsager coefficients. We demonstrate the feasibility of the amplified beam cooling using a coupled multimode optical waveguide system and show that after 800 rounds of amplified cooling, the optical power of an incoming beam is enhanced by 16 times, meanwhile the fundamental mode occupancy is increased to 90%. These findings unveil an anomalous optical phenomenon and a new route toward high-quality light sources.

Optical forces in dielectric structures are typically analyzed by utilizing either the Maxwell stress tensor or energy-based methods from which they can be derived by means of the eigenfrequencies and the effective refractive indices involved. While the equivalence of these two methods has been discussed in several studies, it would seem that a general electrodynamic proof of this aspect is still lacking. In this work, we provide a rigorous electrodynamic derivation based on the Minkowski-Helmholtz formula and the electromagnetic variation theorem, from which one can directly conclude that under Hermitian conditions these two approaches are formally equivalent to each other. The results of our study universally apply to any dielectric waveguide or cavity configuration. In addition, this methodology can be employed in graded index systems that do not exhibit sharp interfaces. Importantly, our analysis offers a straightforward route for predicting optical forces in a variety of photonic arrangements, including dielectric scatterers and multielement array configurations.

The theory of optical thermodynamics provides a comprehensive framework that enables a self-consistent description of the intricate dynamics of nonlinear multimoded photonic systems. This theory, among others, predicts a pressure-like intensive quantity ($\hat{p}$) that is conjugate to the system's total number of modes ($M$) - its corresponding extensive variable. Yet at this point, the nature of this intensive quantity is still nebulous. In this Letter, we elucidate the physical origin of the optical thermodynamic pressure and demonstrate its dual essence. In this context, we rigorously derive an expression that splits $\hat{p}$ into two distinct components, a term that is explicitly tied to the electrodynamic radiation pressure and a second entropic part that is responsible for the entropy change. We utilize this result to establish a formalism that simplifies the quantification of radiation pressure under nonlinear equilibrium conditions, thus eliminating the need for a tedious evaluation of the Maxwell stress tensor. Our theoretical analysis is corroborated by numerical simulations carried out in highly multimoded nonlinear optical structures. These results may provide a novel way in predicting and controlling radiation pressure processes in a variety of nonlinear electromagnetic settings.

We show that in highly multimoded nonlinear photonic systems, the optical thermodynamic pressures emerging from different species of the optical field obey Dalton's law of partial pressures. In multimode settings, the optical thermodynamic pressure is defined as the conjugate to the extensive variable associated with the system's total number of modes and is directly related to the actual electrodynamic radiation forces exerted at the physical boundaries of the system. Here, we extend this notion to photonic configuration supporting different species of the optical field. Under thermal equilibrium conditions, we formally derive an equation that establishes a direct link between the partial thermodynamic pressures and the electrodynamic radiation pressures exerted by each polarization species. Our theoretical framework provides a straightforward approach for quantifying the total radiation pressures through the system's thermodynamics variables without invoking the Maxwell stress tensor formalism. In essence, we show that the total electrodynamic pressure in such arrangements can be obtained in an effortless manner from initial excitation conditions, thus avoiding time-consuming simulations of the utterly complex multimode dynamics. To illustrate the validity of our results, we carry out numerical simulations in multimoded nonlinear optical structures supporting two polarization species and demonstrate excellent agreement with the Maxwell stress tensor method.

Statistical mechanics can provide a versatile theoretical framework for investigating the collective dynamics of weakly nonlinear waves-settings that can be utterly complex to describe otherwise. In optics, composite systems arise due to interactions between different frequencies and/or polarizations. The purpose of this work is to develop a thermodynamic theory that takes into account the synergistic action of multiple components. We find that the type of the nonlinearity involved can have important implications in the thermalization process and, hence, can lead to different thermal equilibrium conditions. Importantly, we derive closed-form expressions for the actual optomechanical pressure that is exerted on the system. In particular, the total optomechanical pressure is the sum of the partial pressures due to each component. Our results can be applied to a variety of weakly nonlinear optical settings such as multimode fibers, bulk waveguides, photonic lattices, and coupled microresonators. The guided transmission of optical waves is critical for light-based applications in modern communication, information processing, and energy generation systems. Traditionally, guiding light waves in structures like optical fibres is predominantly achieved through the use of total internal reflection. In periodic platforms, a variety of other physical mechanisms can also be deployed to transport optical waves. However, transversely confining light in fully dielectric, non-periodic and passive configurations remains a challenge in situations where total internal reflection is not supported. Here, we present an approach to trapping light that utilizes the exotic features of Lagrange points, a special class of equilibrium positions akin to those responsible for capturing trojan asteroids in celestial mechanics. This is achieved in twisted arrangements in which optical Coriolis forces induce guiding channels even at locations where the refractive index landscape is defocusing or entirely unremarkable. Multimode optical fibers represent the ideal platform for transferring multidimensional light states. However, dispersion degrades the correlations between the light's degrees of freedom, thus limiting the effective transport of ultrashort pulses between distant nodes of optical networks. Here, we demonstrate that tailoring the spatiotemporal structure of ultrashort light pulses can overcome the physical limitations imposed by both chromatic and modal dispersion in multimode optical fibers. We synthesize these light states with predefined spatial and chromatic dynamics through applying a sequence of transformations to shape the optical field in all its dimensions. Similar methods can also be used to overcome dispersion processes in other physical settings like acoustics and electron optics. In general, space-time wave packets with correlations between transverse spatial fields and temporal frequency spectra can lead to unique spatiotemporal dynamics, thus enabling control of the instantaneous light properties. However, spatiotemporal dynamics generated in previous approaches manifest themselves at a given propagation distance yet not arbitrarily tailored longitudinally. Here, we propose and demonstrate a new versatile class of judiciously synthesized wave packets whose spatiotemporal evolution can be arbitrarily engineered to take place at various predesigned distances along the longitudinal propagation path. Spatiotemporal synthesis is achieved by introducing a 2-dimensional spectrum comprising both temporal and longitudinal wavenumbers associated with specific transverse Bessel-Gaussian fields. The resulting spectra are then employed to produce wave packets evolving in both time and axial distance - in full accord with the theoretical analysis. In this respect, various light degrees of freedom can be independently manipulated, such as intensity, polarization, and transverse spatial distribution (e.g., orbital angular momentum). Through a temporal-longitudinal frequency comb spectrum, we simulate the synthesis of the aforementioned wave packet properties, indicating a decrease in relative error compared to the desired phenomena as more spectral components are incorporated. Additionally, we experimentally demonstrate tailorable spatiotemporal fields carrying time- and longitudinal-varying orbital angular momentum, such that the local topological charge evolves every ~1 ps in the time domain and 10 cm axially. We believe that our space-time wave packets can significantly expand the exploration of spatiotemporal dynamics in the longitudinal dimension, and potentially enable novel applications in ultrafast microscopy, light-matter interactions, and nonlinear optics.

Speckle patterns are used in a broad range of applications including microscopy, imaging, and light-matter interactions. Tailoring speckles' statistics can dramatically enhance their performance in applications. We present an experimental technique for customizing the spatio-spectral speckled intensity statistics of optical pulses at the output of a complex medium (a disordered multimode fiber) by controlling the spatial profile of the input light. We demonstrate that it is possible to create ensembles of independent speckle patterns with arbitrary statistics at a single wavelength, simultaneously at decorrelated wavelengths, and even tailored statistics across an entire pulse spectrum.

We report the generation of multimode solitons in step-index fiber. The solitons are superpositions of 5-10 temporally-aligned transverse modes, they exhibit speckled beam profiles, and the spatio-spectral variation across the soliton can be complex. Greater understanding of multimode solitons should create a foundation for further research into complex multimode nonlinear phenomena in step-index fibers. With energies of tens of nanojoules and durations around 100 fs, the multimode solitons are speckled fields with peak powers that can exceeed 300 kW, parameters which may be valuable in applications.

From biological ecosystems to spin glasses, connectivity plays a crucial role in determining the function, dynamics, and resiliency of a network. In the realm of non-Hermitian physics, the possibility of complex and asymmetric exchange interactions (|kappa_ij| not equal to |kappa_ji|) between a network of oscillators has been theoretically shown to lead to novel behaviors like delocalization, skin effect, and bulk-boundary correspondence. An archetypical lattice exhibiting the aforementioned properties is that proposed by Hatano and Nelson in a series of papers in late 1990s. While the ramifications of these theoretical works in optics have been recently pursued in synthetic dimensions, the Hatano-Nelson model has yet to be realized in real space. What makes the implementation of these lattices challenging is the difficulty in establishing the required asymmetric exchange interactions in optical platforms. In this work, by using active optical oscillators featuring non-Hermiticity and nonlinearity, we introduce an anisotropic exchange between the resonant elements in a lattice, an aspect that enables us to observe the non-Hermitian skin effect, phase locking, and near-field beam steering in a Hatano-Nelson laser array. Our work opens up new regimes of phase-locking in lasers while shedding light on the fundamental physics of non-Hermitian systems.

Uninhibited control of the complex spatiotemporal quantum wavefunction of a single photon has so far remained elusive even though it can dramatically increase the encoding flexibility and thus the information capacity of a photonic quantum link. By fusing temporal waveform generation in a cold atomic ensemble and spatial single-photon shaping, we hereby demonstrate for the first time complete spatiotemporal control of a propagation invariant (2+1)D Airy single-photon optical bullet. These correlated photons are not only self-accelerating and impervious to spreading as their classical counterparts, but can be concealed and revealed in the presence of strong classical light noise. Our methodology allows one to synthesize in a robust and versatile manner arbitrary quantum nonspreading spatiotemporal light bullets and in this respect could have ramifications in a broad range of applications such as quantum imaging, long-distance quantum communications, and multidimensional information encoding., Comment: 28 pages, 17 figures

Spatiotemporal sculpturing of light pulse with ultimately sophisticated structures represents the holy grail of the human everlasting pursue of ultrafast information transmission and processing as well as ultra-intense energy concentration and extraction. It also holds the key to unlock new extraordinary fundamental physical effects. Traditionally, spatiotemporal light pulses are always treated as spatiotemporally separable wave packet as solution of the Maxwell's equations. Optical forces are known to arise in a universal fashion in many and diverse physical settings. As such, they are successfully employed over a wide range of applications in areas like biophotonics, optomechanics and integrated optics. While inter-elemental optical forces in few-mode photonic networks have been so far systematically analyzed, little is known, if any, as to how they manifest themselves in highly multimoded optical environments. In this work, by means of statistical mechanics, we formally address this open problem in optically thermalized weakly nonlinear heavily multimode tight-binding networks. The outlined thermodynamic formulation allows one to obtain in an elegant manner analytical results for the exerted thermodynamic pressures in utterly complex arrangements-results that are either computationally intensive or impossible to obtain otherwise. Thus, we derive simple closed-form expressions for the thermodynamic optical pressures displayed among elements, which depend only on the internal energy as well as the coupling coefficients involved. In all cases, our theoretical results are in excellent agreement with numerical computations. Our study may pave the way towards a deeper understanding of these complex processes and could open up avenues in harnessing radiation forces in multimode optomechanical systems., Comment: 25 pages, 5 figures

Spatiotemporal mode-locking in a laser with anomalous dispersion is investigated. Mode-locked states with varying modal content can be observed, but we find it difficult to observe highly multimode states. We describe the properties of these mode-locked states and compare them to the results of numerical simulations. Prospects for the generation of highly-multimode states and lasers based on multimode soliton formation are discussed.

The adiabatic theorem, a corollary of the Schr\"odinger equation, manifests itself in a profoundly different way in non-Hermitian arrangements, resulting in counterintuitive state transfer schemes that have no counterpart in closed quantum systems. In particular, the dynamical encirclement of exceptional points (EPs) in parameter space has been shown to lead to a chiral phase accumulation, non-adiabatic jumps, and topological mode conversion [1- 8]. Recent theoretical studies, however, have shown that contrary to previously established demonstrations, this behavior is not strictly a result of winding around a non-Hermitian degeneracy [9]. Instead, it appears to be mostly attributed to the non-trivial landscape of the Riemann surfaces, sometimes because of the presence of an exceptional point in the vicinity [9- 11]. In an effort to bring this counterintuitive aspect of non-Hermitian systems into light and confirm this hypothesis, we provide here the first set of experiments to directly observe the field evolution and chiral state conversion in an EP-excluding cycle in a slowly varying non- Hermitian system. To do so, a versatile yet unique fiber-based photonic emulator is realized that utilizes the polarization degrees of freedom in a quasi-common path single-ring arrangement. Our observations may open up new avenues for light manipulation and state conversion, while providing a foundation for understanding the intricacies of the adiabatic theorem in non-Hermitian systems.

We demonstrate how the presence of gain-loss contrast between two coupled identical resonators can be used as a new degree of freedom to enhance the modulation frequency response of laser diodes. An electrically pumped microring laser system with a bending radius of 50 {\mu}m is fabricated on an InAlGaAs/InP MQW p-i-n structure. The room temperature continuous wave (CW) laser threshold current of the device is 27 mA. By adjusting the ratio between the injection current levels in the two coupled microrings, our experimental results clearly show a bandwidth improvement by up to 1.63 times the fundamental resonant frequency of the individual device. This matches well with our rate equation simulation model.

The ability to tailor the hopping interactions between the constituent elements of a physical system could enable the observation of unusual phenomena that are otherwise inaccessible in standard settings. In this regard, a number of recent theoretical studies have indicated that an asymmetry in either the short- or long-range complex exchange constants can lead to counterintuitive effects, for example, the possibility of a Kramer's degeneracy even in the absence of spin 1/2 or the breakdown of the bulk-boundary correspondence. Here, we show how such tailored asymmetric interactions can be realized in photonic integrated platforms by exploiting non-Hermitian concepts, enabling a class of topological behaviors induced by optical gain. As a demonstration, we implement the Haldane model, a canonical lattice that relies on asymmetric long-range hopping in order to exhibit quantum Hall behavior without a net external magnetic flux. The topological response observed in this lattice is a result of gain and vanishes in a passive but otherwise identical structure. Our findings not only enable the realization of a wide class of non-trivial phenomena associated with tailored interactions, but also opens up avenues to study the role of gain and nonlinearity in topological systems in the presence of quantum noise., Comment: The supplementary information is available from the Journal's website

Topological theories have established a new set of rules that govern the transport properties in a wide variety of wave-mechanical settings. In a marked departure from the established approaches that induce Floquet topological phases by specifically tailored discrete coupling protocols or helical lattice motions, we introduce a new class of bimorphic Floquet topological insulators that leverage connective chains with periodically modulated on-site potentials to unlock new topological features in the system. In exploring a 'chain-driven' generalization of the archetypical Floquet honeycomb lattice, we identify a rich phase structure that can host multiple non-trivial topological phases associated simultaneously with both Chern-type and anomalous chiral states. Experiments carried out in photonic waveguide lattices reveal a unique and strongly confined helical edge state that, owing to its origin in bulk flat bands, can be set into motion in a topologically protected fashion, or halted at will, without compromising its adherence to individual lattice sites., Comment: 17 pages, 7 figures

We study the propagation dynamics of bright optical vortex solitons in nematic liquid crystals with a nonlocal reorientational nonlinear response. We investigate the role of optical birefringence on the stability of these solitons. In agreement with recent experimental observations, we show that birefringence-induced astigmatism can eventually destabilize these vortex solitons. However, for low and moderate birefringence, vortex solitons can propagate stably over experimentally relevant distances.

We theoretically investigate a Thouless pumping scheme in the 1D topological Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model for single and multiple band-gaps systems when implemented in a discrete nematic liquid crystal arrangement. For an electrically controlled SSH waveguide array, we numerically demonstrate edge-to-edge light transport at low power levels. On the other hand, at higher powers, the transport is frustrated by light-induced nonlinear defect states, giving rise to robust all-optical switching., Comment: Accepted 23 December 2021 PRA

We show that the orbital angular momentum (OAM) of a light field can be thermalized in a nonlinear cylindrical multimode optical waveguide. We find, that upon thermal equilibrium, the maximization of the optical entropy leads to a generalized Rayleigh-Jeans distribution that governs the power modal occupancies with respect to the discrete OAM charge numbers. This distribution is characterized by a temperature that is by nature different from that associated with the longitudinal electromagnetic momentum flow of the optical field. Counterintuitively and in contrast to previous results, we demonstrate that even under positive temperatures, the ground state of the fiber is not always the most populated in terms of power. Instead, because of OAM, the thermalization processes may favor higher order modes. A new equation of state is derived along with an extended Euler equation -- resulting from the extensivity of the entropy itself. By monitoring the nonlinear interaction between two multimoded optical wavefronts with opposite spins, we show that the exchange of angular momentum is dictated by the difference in OAM temperatures, in full accord with the second law of thermodynamics. The theoretical analysis presented here is corroborated by numerical simulations that take into account the complex nonlinear dynamics of hundreds of modes. Our results may pave the way towards high power optical sources with controllable orbital angular momenta, and at a more fundamental level, could shed light on the physics of other complex multimoded nonlinear bosonic systems that display additional conservation laws.

Exceptional points are complex-valued spectral singularities that lead to a host of intriguing features such as loss-induced transparency - a counterintuitive process in which an increase in the system's overall loss can lead to enhanced transmission. In general, the associated enhancements scale with the order of the exceptional points. Consequently, it is of great interest to devise new strategies to implement realistic devices capable of exhibiting high-order exceptional points. Here, we show that high-order N-photon exceptional points can be generated by exciting non-hermitian waveguide arrangements with coherent light states. Using photon-number resolving detectors it then becomes possible to observe N-photon enhanced loss-induced transparency in the quantum realm. Further, we analytically show that the number-resolved dynamics occurring in the same nonconservative waveguide arrays will exhibit eigenspectral ramifications having several exceptional points associated to different sets of eigenmodes and dissipation rates.

Topological insulator lasers (TILs) are a recently introduced family of lasing arrays in which phase locking is achieved through synthetic gauge fields. These single frequency light source arrays operate in the spatially extended edge modes of topologically non-trivial optical lattices. Because of the inherent robustness of topological modes against perturbations and defects, such topological insulator lasers tend to demonstrate higher slope efficiencies as compared to their topologically trivial counterparts. So far, magnetic and non-magnetic optically pumped topological laser arrays as well as electrically pumped TILs that are operating at cryogenic temperatures have been demonstrated. Here we present the first room temperature and electrically pumped topological insulator laser. This laser array, using a structure that mimics the quantum spin Hall effect for photons, generates light at telecom wavelengths and exhibits single frequency emission. Our work is expected to lead to further developments in laser science and technology, while opening up new possibilities in topological photonics.

We study the statistical behavior of multimoded optical systems under equilibrium conditions. We investigate the role of variations of the system parameters in the thermodynamic description and derive, an optical analogue of the first law of thermodynamics, a generic expression for the work done to the system, and an optical Gibbs-Duhem equation. To demonstrate these effects, we focus in the case of two-dimensional photonic lattices. We study the conditions under which the entropy in such waveguide arrays can be considered as extensive. In this respect, small deviations from the extensive character of the entropy give rise to stress and strain terms. We examine how the conservation laws in such array configurations are affected by variations in the system parameters, and furthermore, we analyze the respective thermodynamic processes (isentropic and Joule-type expansions)., Comment: 12 pages, 2 figures

The collective response of a system is profoundly shaped by the interaction dynamics between its constituent elements. In physics, tailoring these interactions can enable the observation of unusual phenomena that are otherwise inaccessible in standard settings, ranging from the possibility of a Kramer's degeneracy even in the absence of spin to the breakdown of the bulkboundary correspondence. Here, we show how such tailored asymmetric coupling terms can be realized in photonic integrated platforms by exploiting non-Hermitian concepts. In this regard, we introduce a generalized photonic molecule composed of a pair of microring resonators with internal S-bends connected via two directional couplers and a link waveguide. By judiciously designing the parameters of this system, namely the length of the links and the power division ratio of the directional couplers, we experimentally show the emergence of Hermitian and non-Hermitian type exchange interactions. The ramifications of such coupling dynamics are then studied in 1D chain and ring-type active lattices. Our findings establish the proposed structure as a promising building block for the realization of a variety of phenomena, especially those associated with phase locking in laser arrays and non-Hermitian topological lattices.

The complex nonlinear behaviors of heavily multimode lightwave structures have been recently the focus of considerable attention. Here we develop an optical thermodynamic approach capable of describing the thermalization dynamics in large scale nonlinear photonic chain networks - a problem that has remained unresolved so far. A Sackur-Tetrode equation is obtained that explicitly provides the entropy of these systems in terms of all the extensive variables involved. This entropic description leads to a self-consistent set of equations of state from where the optical temperature and chemical potential of the photon gas can be uniquely determined. Processes like isentropic expansion/compression, Joule expansion, as well as aspects associated with beam cleaning/cooling and thermal conduction effects in such chain networks are discussed. Our results open new vistas through which one can describe in an effortless manner the exceedingly complex dynamics of highly multimoded nonlinear bosonic systems that are nowadays of importance in areas ranging from high-power photonic settings to cold atom condensates and optomechanics.

Topological insulators combine insulating properties in the bulk with scattering-free transport along edges, supporting dissipationless unidirectional energy and information flow even in the presence of defects and disorder. The feasibility of engineering quantum Hamiltonians with photonic tools, combined with the availability of entangled photons, raises the intriguing possibility of employing topologically protected entangled states in optical quantum computing and information processing. However, while two-photon states built as a product of two topologically protected single-photon states inherit full protection from their single-photon "parents", high degree of non-separability may lead to rapid deterioration of the two-photon states after propagation through disorder. We identify physical mechanisms which contribute to the vulnerability of entangled states in topological photonic lattices and present clear guidelines for maximizing entanglement without sacrificing topological protection., Comment: 25 pages, 14 figures

Spin models arise in the microscopic description of magnetic materials, where the macroscopic characteristics are governed by exchange interactions among the constituent magnetic moments. Recently, there has been a growing interest in complex systems with spin Hamiltonians, largely due to the rich behaviors exhibited by such interactions at the macroscale. Along these lines, it has been shown that certain classes of optimization problems involving large degrees of freedom can be effectively mapped into classical spin models. In this vein, the respective extremum can be found by identifying the ground state of the associated spin Hamiltonian. Here, we show both theoretically and experimentally, that the cooperative interplay among vectorial electromagnetic modes in coupled metallic nanolasers can be utilized as a means to emulate certain types of spin-like systems. The ensuing spin exchange interactions are in general anisotropic, in a way similar to that encountered in magnetic materials involving spin-orbit coupling. For some topologies, we find that these active nanophotonic structures are governed by a classical XY Hamiltonian that exhibits two phases akin to those associated with ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AF) materials. In addition, we show that in certain configurations, the electromagnetic field distribution can undergo geometrical frustration, depending on the lattice shape and the transverse resonant modes supported by the individual cavity elements. Our results could pave the way towards a new scalable nanophotonic platform to study spin exchange interactions, that can in turn be potentially exploited to investigate more large-scale networks, emulate some magnetic materials, or to address a variety of optimization problems., Comment: 30 pages

Gyroscopes play a crucial role in many and diverse applications associated with navigation, positioning, and inertial sensing [1]. In general, most optical gyroscopes rely on the Sagnac effect -- a relativistically induced phase shift that scales linearly with the rotational velocity [2,3]. In ring laser gyroscopes (RLGs), this shift manifests itself as a resonance splitting in the emission spectrum that can be detected as a beat frequency [4]. The need for ever-more precise RLGs has fueled research activities towards devising new approaches aimed to boost the sensitivity beyond what is dictated by geometrical constraints. In this respect, attempts have been made in the past to use either dispersive or nonlinear effects [5-8]. Here, we experimentally demonstrate an altogether new route based on non-Hermitian singularities or exceptional points in order to enhance the Sagnac scale factor [9-13]. Our results not only can pave the way towards a new generation of ultrasensitive and compact ring laser gyroscopes, but they may also provide practical approaches for developing other classes of integrated sensors., Comment: 15 pages

The quest for ever higher information capacities has brought about a renaissance in multimode optical waveguide systems. This resurgence of interest has recently initiated a flurry of activities in nonlinear multimode fiber optics. The sheer complexity emerging from the presence of a multitude of nonlinearly interacting modes has led not only to new opportunities in observing a host of novel optical effects that are otherwise impossible in single-mode settings, but also to new theoretical challenges in understanding their collective dynamics. In this Article, we present a consistent thermodynamical framework capable of describing in a universal fashion the exceedingly intricate behavior of such nonlinear highly multimoded photonic configurations at thermal equilibrium. By introducing pertinent extensive variables, we derive new equations of state and show that both the 'internal energy' and optical power in many-mode arrangements always flow in such a way so as to satisfy the second law of thermodynamics. The laws governing isentropic processes are derived and the prospect for realizing Carnot-like cycles is also presented. In addition to shedding light on fundamental issues, our work may pave the way towards a new generation of high power multimode optical structures and could have ramifications in other many-state nonlinear systems, ranging from Bose-Einstein condensates to optomechanics.

Mode-locking is a process in which different modes of an optical resonator establish, through nonlinear interactions, stable synchronization. This self-organization underlies light sources that enable many modern scientific applications, such as ultrafast and high-field optics and frequency combs. Despite this, mode-locking has almost exclusively referred to self-organization of light in a single dimension - time. Here we present a theoretical approach, attractor dissection, for understanding three-dimensional (3D) spatiotemporal mode-locking (STML). The key idea is to find, for each distinct type of 3D pulse, a specific, minimal reduced model, and thus to identify the important intracavity effects responsible for its formation and stability. An intuition for the results follows from the 'minimum loss principle,' the idea that a laser strives to find the configuration of intracavity light that minimizes loss (maximizes gain extraction). Through this approach, we identify and explain several distinct forms of STML. These novel phases of coherent laser light have no analogues in 1D and are supported by experimental measurements of the three-dimensional field, revealing STML states comprising more than $10^7$ cavity modes. Our results should facilitate the discovery and understanding of new higher-dimensional forms of coherent light which, in turn, may enable new applications.

During the last 2 years, it was shown that an electromagnetic beam configuration can be bent after propagation through an asymmetrically shaped (Janus) dielectric particle, which adds a new degree of simplicity for generation of a curved light beam. This effect is termed "photonic hook" (PH) and differs from Airy-family beams. PH features the smallest curvature radius of electromagnetic waves ever reported which is about 2 times smaller than the wavelength of the electromagnetic wave. We show that, in general, any complex weakly nonlinear highly multimode system can reach thermodynamic equilibrium that is characterized by a unique temperature and chemical potential. The conditions leading to either positive or negative temperatures are explicitly obtained in terms of the linear spectrum of the system, the input power, and the corresponding Hamiltonian invariant. Pertinent examples illustrating these results are provided in various scenarios.

Geometric phases appear ubiquitously in many and diverse areas of physical sciences, ranging from classical and molecular dynamics to quantum mechanics and solid-state physics. In the realm of optics, similar phenomena are known to emerge in the form of a Pancharatnam-Berry phase whenever the polarization state traces a closed contour on the Poincare sphere. While this class of geometric phases has been extensively investigated in both free-space and guided wave systems, the observation of similar effects in photon-tunneling arrangements has so far remained largely unexplored. Here, for the first time, we experimentally demonstrate that the tunneling or coupling process in a twisted multi-core fiber system can display a chiral geometric phase accumulation-analogous to that of the Aharonov-Bohm effect resulting from the presence of a nonzero magnetic flux. In our experiments, the tunneling geometric phase is manifested through the interference of the corresponding supermodes. In this system, and for specific values of the twist rate, the tunneling between opposite cores ceases, thus signifying an Aharonov-Bohm suppression of tunneling. Our work provides the first observation of this intriguing effect in an optical setting.

In a laser system non-Hermitian methods such as Parity-Time (PT) Symmetry and Supersymmetry (SUSY) have shown and demonstrated the ability to suppress unwanted lasing modes and, thus, achieved single mode lasing operation through the addition of lossy passive elements. While these approaches enable laser engineering versatility, they rely on the drawback of adding optical losses to a system tasked to produce single mode gain. Unlike PT and SUSY lasers, here we show an extra loss-free non-Hermitian laser engineering approach to realize single mode lasing operation for the first time. By selectively enhancing the fundamental modes quality factor, we obtain single mode operation with higher output power per cavity since all cavities in this system contribute to the laser output, in contrast to other non-Hermitian approaches. Furthermore, we show that this approach interestingly allows reducing the number of to-be-designed cavities in super-partner array as compared with, for example, the SUSY approach, thus leading to reduced design complexity upon coupled cavity scale up of laser arrays. In summary, the ability to engineer coupled laser systems where each laser cavity contributes to coherent light amplification opens up a new degree of laser-design freedom leading to increased device performance and simultaneous reduced design and fabrication complexity.

Parity-time (PT) symmetry has attracted a lot of attention since the concept of pseudo-Hermitian dynamics of open quantum systems was first demonstrated two decades ago. Contrary to their Hermitian counterparts, non-conservative environments a priori do not show real energy eigenvalues and unitary evolution. However, if PT-symmetry requirements are satisfied, even dissipative systems can exhibit real energy eigenvalues, thus ensuring energy conservation in the temporal average. In optics, PT-symmetry can be readily introduced by incorporating, in a balanced way, regions having optical gain and loss. However, all optical realizations have been restricted so far to a single transverse dimension (1D) such as optical waveguide arrays. In many cases, only losses were modulated relying on a scaling argument being valid for linear systems only. Both restrictions crucially limit potential applications. Here, we present an experimental platform for investigating the interplay of PT-symmetry and nonlinearity in two dimensions (2D) and observe nonlinear localization and soliton formation. Contrary to the typical dissipative solitons, we find a one-parametric family of solitons which exhibit properties similar to its conservative counterpart. In the limit of high optical power, the solitons collapse on a discrete network and give rise to an amplified, self-accelerating field.

Over the last dozen of years, the area of accelerating waves has made considerable advances not only in terms of fundamentals and experimental demonstrations but also in connection to a wide range of applications. Starting from the prototypical Airy beam that was proposed and observed in 2007, new families of accelerating waves have been identified in the paraxial and nonparaxial domains in space and/or time, with different methods developed to control at will their trajectory, amplitude, and beam width. Accelerating optical waves exhibit a number of highly desirable attributes. They move along a curved or accelerating trajectory while being resilient to perturbations (self-healing), and, are diffraction-free. It is because of these particular features that accelerating waves have been utilized in a variety of applications in the areas of filamentation, beam focusing, particle manipulation, biomedical imaging, plasmons, and material processing among others., Comment: 16 pages, 11 figures

Non-Hermitian exceptional points (EPs) represent a special type of degeneracy where not only the eigenvalues coalesce, but also the eigenstates tend to collapse on each other. Recent studies have shown that in the presence of an EP, light-matter interactions are profoundly modified, leading to a host of novel optical phenomena ranging from enhanced sensitivity to chiral light transport. As of now, however, in order to stabilize a system at the vicinity of an exceptional point, its related parameters must be carefully tuned and/or continuously controlled. To overcome this limitation, here we introduce a new family of broadband exceptional points based on unidirectional coupling, implemented by incorporating an Sshaped waveguide in a microring cavity. In active settings, the resulting unidirectionality exhibits unprecedented resilience to perturbations, thus providing a robust and tunable approach for directly generating beams with distinct orbital angular momentum (OAM). This work could open up new possibilities for manipulating OAM degrees of freedom in applications pertaining to telecommunications and quantum computing, while at the same time may expand the notions of non-Hermiticity in the orbital angular momentum space.

The geometric dimensionality of a physical system significantly impacts its fundamental characteristics. While experiments are fundamentally limited to the maximum of three spatial dimensions, there is a growing interest in harnessing additional synthetic dimensions. In our work, we introduce a new paradigm for the experimental realization of excitation dynamics associated with many-dimensional systems. Crucially, it relies solely on static one-dimensional equivalent structures with judiciously tailored parameters to faithfully reproduce the same optical spectrum and density of states of the high-dimensional system to be represented. In order to showcase the capabilities of our approach, we fabricate 1D photonic lattices that exhibit the characteristic non-monotonic excitation decays associated with quantum walks in up to 7D square lattices. Furthermore, we find that a new type of bound state at the edge of the continuum emerges in higher-than-three dimensions and gives rise to a sharp localisation transition at defect sites. In a series of experiments, we implement the mapped equivalent lattices of up to 5D systems and observe an extreme increase of sensitivity with respect to the detuning of the respective anchor sites. Our findings demonstrate the feasibility and applicative potential of harnessing high-dimensional effects in planar photonics for ultra-sensitive switching or sensing. Notably, our general approach is by no means limited to optics, and can readily be adapted to a variety of other physical contexts, including cold atoms and superconducting qubits with exclusively nearest-neighbour interactions, promising to drive significant advances in different fields including quantum simulations and information processing.

The theoretical framework of supersymmetry (SUSY) aims to relate bosons and fermions -- two profoundly different species of particles -- and their interactions. While this space-time symmetry is seen to provide an elegant solution to many unanswered questions in high-energy physics, its experimental verification has so far remained elusive. Here, we demonstrate that, notions from supersymmetry can be strategically utilized in optics in order to address one of the longstanding challenges in laser science. In this regard, a supersymmetric laser array is realized, capable of emitting exclusively in its fundamental transverse mode. Our results not only pave the way towards devising new schemes for scaling up radiance in integrated lasers, but also on a more fundamental level, they could shed light on the intriguing synergy between non-Hermiticity and supersymmetry.
