Abstract

Research indicates that land degradation in East Africa caused by geomorphic mass movement is transitory. It is posited that while mass movement is the region's most frequent cause of landslide scars, recovery of the scars is rapid, with topsoil chemistry returning in as little as 10 years.

Abstract

Several sociopolitical and geographical analyses are conducted to explain the impact of social, economic and political practices on the forest decline in the south-central rift valley of Ethiopia. Geographic properties, population growth and agricultural development are found to be the major factors that have led to a drastic reduction in the forest area in the last century.
