Barbados gooseberry (BGB) is a non-conventional vegetable highlighted for its nutritional value, particularly its protein content. However, there is a lack of scientific information for improving the plantation system of this plant. This research proposed to evaluate high-density systems to cultivate BGB plants for sprout production. The experiment was carried out in the Horticulture Sector of the Canguiri Experimental Station Farm from UFPR, located in the county of Pinhais, Paraná State, Brazil. BGB was planted in open field beds using distinctive plantation systems according to plant stands and pruning and thinning management. The experimental design was randomized blocks with three repetitions per treatment. Five high-density plantation systems (treatments) were tested: 10 (10?10): 10 × 10 cm; 2) (20?20): 20 × 20 cm; and 3) (30?30): 30 × 30 cm spacing with thinning to keep one sprout growing per primary branch per plant; 4) (30?30TS) was represented by 30 × 30 cm spacing with thinning to keep one sprout growing from each of two secondary branches grown from the primary branch to give two sprouts (TS) per plant; 5) (30?30FS) consisted of plants with 30 × 30 cm spacing with no thinning (FS = free growing sprouts). The first three treatments were thinned to one sprout per plant. Protein content of BGB sprouts was also determined to verify its real protein content. A high-density plantation system promoted BGB sprouts productivity with high protein content (28.8% from leaves of sprout). Treatment 5 produced the highest yield (21.7 t/ha per month). RESUMO O ora-pro-nóbis (OPN) é uma olerícola não convencional que se destaca pelo seu valor nutricional, especialmente, em relação a seu teor proteico. Porém, há escassez de informações técnico-científicas sobre sistemas de cultivo recomendados. Este trabalho teve por objetivo avaliar a produção de brotos de OPN em sistema superadensado. O experimento foi desenvolvido no Setor de Horticultura da Fazenda Experimental Canguiri da UFPR, em Pinhais-PR. Para isso, efetuou-se o plantio do OPN em canteiros a céu aberto em diferentes sistemas de cultivo que variaram conforme a densidade de plantas (espaçamento) e manejo de podas e desbrotas. O delineamento experimental foi em blocos ao acaso com três repetições por tratamento. Foram testados cinco sistemas de cultivo em alta densidade de plantio (tratamentos): 1) 10 cm × 10 cm, 2) 20 cm × 20 cm, 3) 30 cm × 30 cm, 4) 30 cm × 30 cm e 5) 30 cm × 30 cm de espaçamento de plantio; sendo os três primeiros com desbrotas para produção de um broto por planta por colheita, o quarto com desbrota para produção de dois brotos por planta por colheita e o último sem desbrotas para livre produção de brotos. Foi também avaliada a porcentagem de proteína nos brotos de OPN para verificar o seu real conteúdo proteico. Os resultados mostraram que sistema de cultivo superadensado do OPN promove alta produtividade ao mesmo tempo que oferece um produto de alto conteúdo proteico (28,8% em folhas de broto). O cultivo no espaçamento de 30 × 30 cm e sem desbrotas proporcionou a maior produção de brotos (27,1 t/ha por mês).

The cashew apple (Anacardium occidentale L.) is rich in antioxidants such as ascorbic acid, carotenoids, and phenolic compounds, in addition to the macronutrients. In recent years, there has been a growing demand of “easy to prepare” fruit products for the general population. This work aimed to evaluate the microencapsulation of cashew apple juice by spray drying using different ratios of encapsulating matrices and different concentrations of total solids. The formed microparticles were evaluated by the retention of ascorbic acid, total phenolics, moisture, yield, solubility, and particle size and morphology. Three samples formulated with 15% total solids and three encapsulating matrices (40:60% of maltodextrin: starch octenylsuccinate, 100% of maltodextrin, and 100% starch octenylsuccinate) were selected for the stability study. All microparticles were 100% soluble, and the best results were obtained using the microparticles with the highest total solids ratios (15%). When using a single encapsulant, starch octenyl succinate was superior to maltodextrin in terms of ascorbic acid and total phenolics retention, moisture, yield, solubility, and particle size. The microparticles with 40:60% of maltodextrin: octenylsuccinate and 15% total solid showed the highest ascorbic acid and total phenolics retention as well as good physical properties and better performance when compared to other encapsulating matrix compositions. The microencapsulated cashew apple juice using such a formulation can be used in the food industry to produce functional and special-purpose foods to promote human health.

Os efeitos adversos causados pelo tratamento antineoplásico afetam negativamente o estado nutricional dos pacientes oncológicos. A terapia nutricional por meio do uso de compostos bioativos pode auxiliar no controle dos efeitos adversos da terapia antineoplásica. Este estudo tem como objetivo identificar quais compostos bioativos podem atuar como adjuvantes no tratamento antineoplásico. Trata-se de uma revisão integrativa elaborada em seis etapas e redigida segundo PRISMA. Foram incluídos 16 ensaios clínicos randomizados encontrados no período de 2003 a 2020. Os sintomas encontrados foram mucosite (1 estudo, intervenção com uso de calêndula), enquanto náusea e vômito (15 estudos com intervenção com gengibre). Nove estudos tiveram desfechos positivos quanto ao alívio dos sintomas, enquanto em sete não foram encontradas diferenças estatisticamente significativas. A eficácia das intervenções foi atribuída aos compostos bioativos presentes na calêndula e no gengibre, sobretudo o gingerol e shogaol. Há algumas limitações que restringiram as observações acerca dos resultados obtidos, como: a falta de padronização de teor de compostos bioativos, número limitado de estudos e baixa qualidade metodológica de alguns ensaios clínicos. Devido a variabilidade de resultados encontrados nos estudos e a baixa qualidade das evidências, a eficácia do uso de compostos bioativos na modulação dos sintomas adversos causados pela terapia antineoplásica ainda é incerta. No entanto, os resultados com uso de gengibre parecem promissores, sendo necessário mais estudos.

Cocona (Solanum sessiliflorum Dunal) is a tropical fruit with different physicochemical and nutritional characteristics, slightly acidic and exotic flavor, with applicability in the food area is limited. The research is experimental and descriptive, in a qualitative and quantitative approach with cross-sectional design. The objective of the present research was to develop a cake enriched with cocona flour in order to provide a better use of the fruit in regional cuisine, as well as add nutritional value to this preparation. It was possible to verify that the partial replacement of wheat flour by cocona flour in chocolate cakes proved to be a promising alternative, considering the good nutritional and sensorial characteristics of the product obtained in the physicochemical and sensorial tests. Additionally, it can be concluded that manna-cubiu flour is a potential ingredient to add nutritional value to traditional recipes, besides favoring the optimization of fruit consumption in an alternative way for the population. El cocona (Solanum sessiliflorum Dunal) es una fruta tropical con diferentes características nutricionales, sabor ligeramente ácido y exótico, y su aplicabilidad en el área de alimentos aún es limitada. Esta es una investigación experimental y descriptiva, enfoque cualitativo y cuantitativo con diseño transversal. El objetivo del estudio fue desarrollar un pastel enriquecido con harina de cocona para proporcionar un mejor uso de la fruta en la cocina regional, así como agregar valor nutricional a esta preparación. Fue posible verificar que el reemplazo parcial de harina de trigo por harina de cocona en pasteles de chocolate puede ser una alternativa prometedora, debido a las características nutricionales y sensoriales del producto obtenido en las pruebas fisicoquímicas y sensoriales. Además, se puede concluir que la harina de cocona es un ingrediente potencial para agregar valor nutricional a las recetas tradicionales, además de favorecer la optimización del consumo de frutas de una manera alternativa para la población. O maná-cubiu (Solanum sessiliflorum Dunal) é um fruto tropical, com características nutricionais diferenciadas, de sabor ligeiramente ácido e exótico, com sua aplicabilidade na área de alimentos ainda limitada. Trata-se de uma pesquisa experimental e descritiva, de abordagem quali-quantitativa com delineamento transversal. O objetivo do estudo foi desenvolver um bolo enriquecido com farinha de maná-cubiu com vistas a proporcionar um melhor aproveitamento do fruto na culinária regional, bem como, agregar valor nutricional a esta preparação. Foi possível verificar que a substituição parcial de farinha de trigo por farinha de maná-cubiu em bolos de chocolate pode ser uma alternativa promissora, devido as características nutricionais e sensoriais do produto, obtidas nos testes físico-químicos e sensoriais. Adicionalmente, pode-se concluir que, a farinha de maná-cubiu é um ingrediente potencial para agregar valor nutricional a receitas tradicionais, além de favorecer a otimização do consumo do fruto, de uma forma alternativa, para a população.

Biofortification can be understood as a strategy to raise nutrients levels in vegetables edible structures, which can positively interfere in human diet. Biofertilizers are an interesting option in alternative production systems, as they can increase food nutritional quality and contribute to plant development, while aiding environment sustainability as natural products. The use of microalgae and humic acid as biofertilizers points to improvements in nutrients and biomolecules content in plants, however, their combined application is still unexplored. In that scenario, it was carried a study with onions about the influence of applications via root immersion in microalgae Scenedesmus subspicatus (Sc) and humic acid (HA) solutions, analyzing possible alterations of macro and micronutrients, total sugars, reducing sugar, free total amino acids, , total soluble solids, soluble proteins and antioxidant capacity in the bulbs. Treatments consisted of one minute seedlings roots immersion from two onion cultivars in solutions containing microalgae and humic acid, and then transplanted to organic system field. There were used three concentrations: control, 0.3 g L-1 Sc + 0.3 g L-1 HA (3SH) and 0.6 g L-1 Sc + 0.6 g L-1 HA (6SH). Results show that the treatments with microalgae with humic acid association were able to increase the content of N, carbohydrates and soluble proteins, also elevating antioxidant activity in onion bulbs. La biofortificación puede entenderse como una estrategia para aumentar los niveles de nutrientes en las estructuras comestibles de los vegetales, lo que puede interferir positivamente en la dieta humana. Los biofertilizantes son una opción interesante en los sistemas de producción alternativos, ya que pueden incrementar la calidad nutricional de los alimentos y contribuir al desarrollo de las plantas, al mismo tiempo que ayudan a mantener el medio ambiente como productos naturales. El uso de microalgas y ácido húmico como biofertilizantes apunta a mejoras en el contenido de nutrientes y biomoléculas en las plantas, pero su aplicación conjunta aún no se ha explorado. En este escenario, se realizó un estudio con cebollas sobre la influencia de aplicaciones vía inmersión radicular en soluciones de microalgas Scenedesmus subspicatus (Sc) y ácido húmico (HA), analizando posibles cambios en macro y micronutrientes, azúcares totales, azúcares reductores, sólidos solubles totales, aminoácidos libres totales, proteínas solubles y capacidad antioxidante en bulbos. Los tratamientos consistieron en sumergir las raíces de plántulas de dos cultivares de cebolla en soluciones que contenían microalgas y ácido húmico durante un minuto, y luego trasplantarlas al campo del sistema orgánico. Se utilizaron tres concentraciones: control, 0,3 g L-1 Sc + 0,3 g L-1 HA (3SH) y 0,6 g L-1 Sc + 0,6 g L-1 HA (6SH). Los resultados muestran que los tratamientos con microalgas con asociación de ácidos húmicos fueron capaces de incrementar el contenido de N, carbohidratos y proteínas solubles, aumentando también la actividad antioxidante en bulbos de cebolla. A biofortificação pode ser entendida como uma estratégia para elevar os níveis de nutrientes nas estruturas comestíveis dos vegetais, o que pode interferir positivamente na dieta humana. Nesse cenário, foi realizado um estudo com cebolas sobre a influência das aplicações via imersão radicular em soluções de microalgas Scenedesmus subspicatus (Sc) e ácido húmico (HA), analisando possíveis alterações de macro e micronutrientes, açúcares totais, açúcares redutores, sólidos solúveis totais, aminoácidos livres totais, proteínas solúveis e capacidade antioxidante nos bulbos. Os tratamentos consistiram na imersão das raízes das mudas de duas cultivares de cebola em soluções contendo microalgas e ácido húmico por um minuto, e posteriormente transplantadas para o campo do sistema orgânico. Foram utilizadas três concentrações: controle, 0,3 g L-1 Sc + 0,3 g L-1 HA (3SH) e 0,6 g L-1 Sc + 0,6 g L-1 HA (6SH). Os resultados mostram que os tratamentos com microalgas com associação de ácidos húmicos foram capazes de aumentar o teor de N, carboidratos e proteínas solúveis, elevando também a atividade antioxidante em bulbos de cebola.

This study describes the extraction and characterisation of cashew apple polyphenol oxidase (PPO) and the effect of wounding on cashew apple phenolic acid composition, PPO activity and fruit browning. Purification factor was 59 at 95% (NH4)2SO4 saturation. For PPO activity, the optimal substrate was catechol and the optimum pH was 6.5. PPO Km and Vmax values were 18.8 mM and 13.6 U min−1 ml−1, respectively. Ascorbic acid, citric acid, sodium sulphite and sodium metabisulphite decreased PPO activity, while sodium chloride increased PPO activity. Wounding at 2 °C and 27 °C for 24 h increased PPO activity but storage at 40 °C reduced PPO activity. Gallic acid, protocatechuic acid and cinnamic acid (free and conjugate) were identified in cashew apple juice. Cutting and subsequent storage at 40 °C hydrolysed cinnamic acid. 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural content in cashew apple juice increased after injury and storage at higher temperatures, indicating non-enzymatic browning.

The cashew apple is native to Brazil, but there is insufficient information regarding the nutritional properties of this fruit. The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of high pressure processing (HPP) at room temperature (25 °C) on phenolic compound and ascorbic acid contents and antioxidant capacity of cashew apple juice. This study showed that HPP at 250 or 400 MPa for 3, 5 and 7 min did not change pH, acidity, total soluble solids, ascorbic acid or hydrolysable polyphenol contents. However, juice pressurized for 3 and 5 min showed higher soluble polyphenol contents. Antioxidant capacity, measured by the ferric-reducing antioxidant power method, was not altered by HPP, but when treated at 250 MPa for 3 min, it resulted in an increased value when 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl was used. These data demonstrate that HPP can be used in the food industry for the generation of products with higher nutritional quality.

Polyphenol oxidase, a copper-containing metalloprotein, catalyzes the oxidation of phenolic compounds to quinones, which produce brown pigments in wounded tissues. This enzymatic mechanism causes post harvest losses and mainly affects tropical fruits. In this article, some characteristics of polyphenol oxidase from different plants are reviewed and information about conventional and alternative methods to inactivate this enzyme is presented. Characterization of the polyphenol oxidase could help to develop or to choose more effective methods for controlling browning of vegetables and products.

In this study, ascorbic acid, total polyphenols and proanthocyanidins of fresh-cut cashew apple were quantified. Antioxidant capacity was determined in whole juice and in polyphenols extracts by three methods: 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) and β-carotene bleaching. Effect of cutting and storage for 24 h at 2 °C, 27 °C and 40 °C on these compounds were also evaluated. Cashew apple presented 163 mg of ascorbic acid per 100 g of fresh weight (FW). Soluble and hydrolysable polyphenols contents were 12.79 mg GAE/100 g FW and 18.53 mg GAE/100 g FW and proanthocyanidins were 9.27 mg/100 g FW. Antioxidant capacity of juice and polyphenols extract was high for DPPH method. Storage temperatures affected bioactive compounds on cut cashew apple. The content of ascorbic acid decreased in all temperatures. Proanthocyanidins were more sensitive to 40 °C than to other temperatures. The content of polyphenols and antioxidant capacity of juice by DPPH assay did not change. However, the reducing power was lower in samples kept at high temperatures. A strong positive correlation between ascorbic acid and FRAP (r = 0.99) and a negative correlation between DPPH and FRAP (r = − 0.79) were observed. No correlations were found between polyphenols and antioxidant capacity indicating the importance of phenolic composition in the extracts. The results confirm the importance of temperature and injury on the quality of cashew apple.
