There are numerous studies measuring the rate and extent of bioturbation worldwide, however, information on mixing rates in the deep ocean, especially in the polar regions , are extremely scarce. The present study presents mixing rates and mixed layer depths for the deep seafloor at the LTER (Long-Term Ecological Research) observatory HAUSGARTEN in Fram Strait, Arctic Ocean . Two stations at similar water depths (HG-IV at 2492 m, and S3 at 2391 m) but different distances to the ice edge (approx. 65 km and 115 km, respectively) were chosen to carry out long-term in situ bioturbation experiments (2 and 4 years, respectively), using luminophores as a tracer. Enhanced bioturbation at the northern site, located closer to the high productive Marginal Ice Zone (MIZ) and thus expected to receive higher amounts of settling organic matter thereby supporting a richer benthic community , could not be confirmed. Instead, biodiffusion-like mixing rates ( Db) at the experimental sites showed no significant differences (0.26 ± 0.27 SD cm−2 y−1 at station HG-IV; 0.28 ± 0.40 SD cm−2 y−1 at station S3). Moreover, mixed layer depths (L) at the two sites were almost identical; mixing of surface sediments occurred down to approx. 6–7 cm sediment depth. Indications for a non-local transport of sediment particles from the surface to deeper parts of the sediment, resulting in higher values for the Non-Local Index (NLI), could only be found for the central HAUSGARTEN site HG-IV. Differences in macro- and megafauna communities at the two experimental sites might be responsible for subsurface maxima in luminophore distribution and slightly (non-significantly) higher NLI values at this site (5.37 ± 3.35 SD at station HG-IV; 3.26 ± 1.82 SD at station S3). Temporal variations in benthic activities should have been levelled out in the multi-year experiments, thus providing reliable baseline data for the deep Fram Strait.

Recent studies have shown that despite its remoteness, the Arctic region harbors some of the highest microplastic (MP) concentrations worldwide. Here, we present the results of a sampling campaign to assess the vertical distribution of MP particles (11 μm) at five stations of the HAUSGARTEN observatory. Water column samples were taken with large volume pumps by filtering 218-561 L of seawater at two to four depth strata (near-surface, ∼300 m, ∼1000 m, and above seafloor), and sediment samples were taken with a multiple corer. Arctic Ocean surface sea-ice conditions are linked with the deep sea benthic oxygen fluxes via a cascade of interdependencies across ecosystem components such as primary production, food supply, activity of the benthic community, and their functions. Additionally, each ecosystem component is influenced by abiotic factors such as light availability, temperature, water depth, and grain size structure. In this study, we investigated the coupling between surface sea-ice conditions and deep-sea benthic remineralization processes through a cascade of interdependencies in the Fram Strait. We measured sea-ice concentrations, a variety of different sediment characteristics, benthic community parameters, and oxygen fluxes at 12 stations of the LTER HAUSGARTEN observatory, Fram Strait, at water depths of 275–2500 m. Our investigations reveal that the Fram Strait is bisected into two long-lasting and stable regions: (i) a permanently and highly sea-ice-covered area and (ii) a seasonally and low sea-ice-covered area. Within the Fram Strait ecosystem, sea-ice concentration and water depth are two independent abiotic factors, controlling the deep-sea benthos. Sea-ice concentration correlated with the available food and water depth with the oxygen flux. In addition, both abiotic factors sea-ice concentration and water depth correlate with the macrofauna biomass. However, at water depths > 1500 m the influence of the surface sea-ice cover is minimal with water depth becoming more dominant. Benthic remineralization across the Fram Strait on average is ∼ 1 mmol C m−2 d−1. Our data indicate that the portion of newly produced carbon that is remineralized by the benthos is 5 % in the seasonally low sea-ice-covered eastern part of Fram Strait but can be 14 % in the permanently high sea-ice-covered western part of Fram Strait. Here, by comparing a permanently sea-ice-covered area with a seasonally sea-ice-covered area, we discuss a potential scenario for the deep-sea benthic ecosystem in the future Arctic Ocean, in which an increased surface primary production may lead to increasing benthic remineralization at water depths

Bathymetric patterns in standing stocks and diversity are a major topic of investigation in deep-sea biology. From the literature, responses of metazoan meiofauna and nematodes to bathymetric gradients are well studied, with a general decrease in biomass and abundance with increasing water depth, while bathymetric diversity gradients often, although it is not a rule, show a unimodal pattern. Spatial distribution patterns of nematode communities along bathymetric gradients are coupled with surface-water processes and interacting physical and biological factors within the benthic system. We studied the nematode communities at the Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) observatory HAUSGARTEN, located in the Fram Strait at the Marginal Ice Zone, with respect to their standing stocks as well as structural and functional diversity. We evaluated whether nematode density, biomass and diversity indices, such as H 0 , H inf , EG (50) , Θ − 1 , are linked with environmental conditions along a bathymetric transect spanning from 1200 m to 5500 m water depth. Nematode abundance, biomass and diversity, as well as food availability from phytodetritus sedimentation (indicated by chloroplastic pigments in the sediments), were higher at the stations located at upper bathyal depths (1200–2000 m) and tended to decrease with increasing water depth. A faunal shift was found below 3500 m water depth, where genus composition and trophic structure changed significantly and structural diversity indices markedly decreased. A strong dominance of very few genera and its high turnover particularly at the abyssal stations (4000–5500 m) suggests that environmental conditions were rather unfavorable for most genera. Despite the high concentrations of sediment-bound chloroplastic pigments and elevated standing stocks found at the deepest station (5500 m), nematode genus diversity remained the lowest compared to all other stations. This study provides a further insight into the knowledge of deep-sea nematodes, their diversity patterns and a deeper understanding of the environmental factors shaping nematodes communities at bathyal and abyssal depths.

This study compares the macrofaunal communities along two bathymetric transects (1000 – 2500 m water depth) in predominantly ice-covered western (offshore Greenland) and generally ice-free eastern (offshore Svalbard) regions of the Fram Strait. Material was collected using an USNEL 0.25 m2 box corer and all sediment samples were processed through a 500-μm sieve. A total of 1671 organisms from 169 species were found. Densities off Greenland were generally lower than those observed off Svalbard. On both sides of the Fram Strait, density, biomass and biodiversity generally decreased with increasing water depth. An exception was observed at the deepest station off Greenland (2500 m water depth), which was located within the Marginal Ice Zone. At this station, macrofaunal density was elevated (992 ± 281 ind. m−2) compared to the adjacent shallower sampling areas off Greenland (272 ± 208 ind. m−2 to 787 ± 172 ind. m−2) and the deeper stations (2000 and 2500 m water depth) off Svalbard (552 ± 155 ind. m−2 and 756 ± 182 ind. m−2). The most abundant species along both transects was the polychaete Galathowenia fragilis (off Greenland: 288 ind. m−2, off Svalbard: 740 ind. m−2). Sea ice coverage and water depth, as well as the associated food availability at the seafloor, seem to be crucial factors driving the macrofaunal community patterns. A strong pelago-benthic coupling is observed to be typical in Arctic deep-sea ecosystems, and is also confirmed by our study.

The present study examines the effects of experimentally generated disturbance on bathyal nematode communities at the LTER (Long-Term Ecological Research) observatory HAUSGARTEN, situated in the Fram Strait, between Greenland and Svalbard. In order to understand the complex interactions between the biota and environmental perturbations we deployed a free-falling device (bottom lander) equipped with three rotating fork-like disturber units, able to perturbate the upper sediment layers with different disturbance frequencies at chosen time intervals. During a one-year deployment at 2493 m water depth, disturber unit DI was programmed to rotate every 14 days, DII every 28 days, and DIII every 72 days, resulting in 28, 14, and 7 perturbations, respectively. Sediment sampling following this experimental period was conducted with push-coring devices deployed by the Remotely Operated Vehicle “QUEST 4000” (MARUM, Bremen). These sediment cores were sub-sampled to determine the effect of the sediment perturbations on various sediment parameters (i.e., grain size distribution, chloroplastic pigment concentrations) as well as on benthic nematode communities. A total of 4773 nematodes from 27 families and 81 genera were identified. Nematode densities in the disturbed areas ranged from 617 ind. / 10 cm2 to 1566 ind. / 10 cm2, with a mean density of 1193 ind. / 10 cm2 observed overall in the disturbed sediments. Control sediments contained on average 20% more nematode specimens than were found within the disturbed sediments, with an average density of 1477 ind. / 10 cm2 observed. Nematode evenness (J'), genera richness (EG(51)) and heterogeneity (H′) were not significantly different between the treatments and controls (undisturbed vs disturbance). We found a significant effect of the interaction of disturbance frequency and sediment depth (interaction term Fr x De) on heterogeneity and genera richness, while evenness significantly differed between different sediment depths (De) and within the disturbed sediments between different disturbance frequencies (Fr). Although surface sediments in the three disturbed areas were effectively perturbated, sediment depth still has the most pronounced influence on nematode community attributes, while the experimentally induced disturbance had only a limited impact on nematode diversity and community structure. Although we found the density of some nematode genera was negatively affected by the disturbances, the deep-sea nematode community at HAUSGARTEN was generally characterized by a relatively high diversity and seemed to be largely resilient to the experimental disturbances.

Time-series studies at the LTER (Long-Term Ecological Research) observatory HAUSGARTEN have yielded the world&rsquo, s longest time-series on deep-sea meiofauna and thus provide a decent basis to investigate the variability in deep-sea meiobenthic communities at different spatial and temporal scales. The main objective of the present study was to investigate whether the sediment-dwelling meiofauna (size range: 32&ndash, 1000 &micro, m) is controlled by small-scale local environmental conditions, rather than large-scale differences between water depths. Univariate and multivariate statistical analyses, including distance-based linear models (DistLM) and redundancy analysis (dbRDA), revealed that due to their small size, meiofauna tend to mainly respond to micro-scale (centimeter) variations in environmental conditions in surface and subsurface sediment layers. Inter-annual temporal patterns among metazoan meiofauna at higher taxon levels revealed only a weak effect of time, and merely on the rare meiofauna taxa (&lt, 2% of the total meiofauna community) at HAUSGARTEN.

To study the response of the smaller benthic biota to larger food-falls and their possible effects on the biodiversity at the deep seafloor, we deployed the halves of a sagittally bisected porpoise (1.3 m in length; each half approximately 18 kg) at 2500 m and 5400 m water depth at the LTER (Long-Term Ecological Research) observatory HAUSGARTEN in the eastern Fram Strait. Five weeks after the porpoise deployment, sediments beneath the carcasses and at different distances (0, 20, 40 cm) from these artificial food-falls were sampled with push-corers handled by a Remotely Operated Vehicle. The samples provided empirical evidence for a quick response by sediment-inhabiting bacteria and metazoan meiofauna to the carcasses at both water depths. Compared to control sediments, the substantial pulse of organic matter also led to generally increased meiofauna/nematode densities around the artificial food-falls. The comparison of nematode communities in sediments affected by the carcasses with those in control sediments exhibited shifts in the structural composition and the associated trophic and functional diversity of the nematodes. Our results confirmed that the impact of large food-falls on the deep benthic community largely depend on environmental factors (water depth, alternative food sources) as well as the background species composition, i.e., the structure of the prevailing meiofauna/nematode assemblages and the composition of the necrophagous community present in the wider area.

Deep-sea benthic communities and their structural and functional characteristics are regulated by surface water processes. Our study focused on the impact of changes in water depth and food supplies on small-sized metazoan bottom-fauna (meiobenthos) along a bathymetric transect (1200–5500 m) in the western Fram Strait. The samples were collected every summer season from 2005 to 2009 within the scope of the HAUSGARTEN monitoring program. In comparison to other polar regions, the large inflow of organic matter to the sea floor translates into relatively high meiofaunal densities in this region. Densities along the bathymetric gradient range from approximately 2400 ind. 10 cm-2 at 1200 m to approximately 300 ind. 10 cm-2 at 4000 m. Differences in meiofaunal distribution among sediment layers (i.e., vertical profile) were stronger than among stations (i.e., bathymetric gradient). At all the stations meiofaunal densities and number of taxa were the highest in the surface sediment layer (0–1 cm), and these decreased with increasing sediment depth (down to 4–5 cm). However, the shape of the decreasing pattern differed significantly among stations. Meiofaunal densities and taxonomic richness decreased gradually with increasing sediment depth at the shallower stations with higher food availability. At deeper stations, where the availability of organic matter is generally lower, meiofaunal densities decreased sharply to minor proportions at sediment depths already at 2–3 cm. Nematodes were the most abundant organisms (60–98%) in all the sediment layers. The environmental factors best correlated to the vertical patterns of the meiofaunal community were sediment-bound chloroplastic pigments that indicate phytodetrital matter. During an expedition to the deep-sea long-term observatory HAUSGARTEN in the eastern Fram Strait in summer 2003, the availability of a Remotely Operated Vehicle allowed a targeted sampling of surface sediments around a relatively large dropstone (0.9 m2) to determine suspected differences in community structure and dynamics of nematode assemblages in relation to the confined flow regime and patchy food availability in the immediate vicinity of the stone. The almost rectangular dropstone was about 150 cm in length, 60 cm in width, and up to 15 cm in height. Small-scale current measurements around the dropstone using a MAVS-3 acoustic current meter exhibited a rather complex pattern. A computational fluid dynamics simulation revealed areas of constantly flowing near-bottom currents as well as the generation of vortices in certain areas around the dropstone. Time-series studies of arctic marine ecosystems are rare. This is not surprising since polar regions are largely only accessible by means of expensive modern infrastructure and instrumentation. In 1999, the Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz-Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) established the LTER (Long-Term Ecological Research) observatory HAUSGARTEN crossing the Fram Strait at about 79° N. Multidisciplinary investigations covering all parts of the open-ocean ecosystem are carried out at a total of 21 permanent sampling sites in water depths ranging between 250 and 5500 m. From the outset, repeated sampling in the water column and at the deep seafloor during regular expeditions in summer months was complemented by continuous year-round sampling and sensing using autonomous instruments in anchored devices (i.e., moorings and free-falling systems). The central HAUSGARTEN station at 2500 m water depth in the eastern Fram Strait serves as an experimental area for unique biological in situ experiments at the seafloor, simulating various scenarios in changing environmental settings. Long-term ecological research at the HAUSGARTEN observatory revealed a number of interesting temporal trends in numerous biological variables from the pelagic system to the deep seafloor. Contrary to common intuition, the entire ecosystem responded exceptionally fast to environmental changes in the upper water column. Major variations were associated with a Warm-Water-Anomaly evident in surface waters in eastern parts of the Fram Strait between 2005 and 2008. However, even after 15 years of intense time-series work at HAUSGARTEN, we cannot yet predict with complete certainty whether these trends indicate lasting alterations due to anthropologically-induced global environmental changes of the system, or whether they reflect natural variability on multiyear time-scales, for example, in relation to decadal oscillatory atmospheric processes.

Five photographic transects, covering some 830 m2 of seafloor in total, were analyzed to characterize the megabenthic community along a bathymetric gradient covering water depths from 1200 to 5500 m in the eastern Fram Strait. Megafaunal densities ranged between 11 and 38 ind. m−2. The highest densities were found at 1650 m and the lowest densities occurred at 3000 m depth. The number of taxa and morphotypes ranged between 4 at 5500 m and 27 at 1650 m water depth. Ophiocten gracilis, a small white unidentified amphipod, Kolga hyalina, and Bathycrinus carpenteri were the dominant and characteristic species on the slope and continental rise. Elpidia heckeri dominated in the Molloy Hole, the deepest depression known in the Arctic Ocean. Megafaunal zonation patterns appeared to be mainly controlled by food availability, as indicated by phytodetrital matter measured at the seafloor, and by benthic biomass in the sediments, as indicated by sediment-bound particulate proteins and phospholipids. By contrast, physical factors, including water depth and seabed properties such as sediment porosity and hard substrata (e.g., dropstones), appear to play a secondary role in determining megabenthic zonation patterns along the bathymetric HAUSGARTEN gradient.

Benthic sampling between 1997 and 2006 on the Yermak Plateau, a permanently ice-covered submarine peninsula northwest of Svalbard, exhibited regional differences with generally higher meiofauna numbers in southern and western parts (~2,250–2,300 ind. 10 cm−2 in the south-west, compared with ~1,200–1,350 ind. 10 cm−2 in the north-east). Distribution patterns suggest a current-driven lateral input of POM, produced in the high-productive Marginal Ice Zone, with increased intensity along the western slope of the plateau. Significant correlations between comparably ‘fresh’ sediment-bound phytodetritus and the taxonomic composition of meiofauna assemblages indicate that food quality decisively affects the community structure. The long-term development of meiobenthic communities showed no clear trend; however, a comparison of summer and winter data exhibited higher meiofauna densities and a more diverse composition in July samples. The predominance of small nematodes in the summer samples might point to reproductive activities stimulated by increased food availability. The taxonomic composition of nematode assemblages showed distinct regional differences, thereby indicating more stable environmental conditions in north-eastern parts of the Yermak Plateau.

An Integrated Sediment Disturber (ISD) was developed to study the effects of repeated physical disturbances on sediment geochemistry and associated benthic fauna. The ISD is capable to generate a strong, more or less uniform mixing of surface sediments by three rotating fork-like disturber units of approximately 1 m in diameter. Perturbations can be set at different intensities and frequencies, e.g., on times scales of hours, days, or weeks, depending on the experimental design. The ISD carries an Autonomous Positioning Drive (APD) module, which allows the three-dimensional positioning of sensors by a programmable controller. The three circular disturbed zones and an undisturbed control area in-between can be monitored at specified frequencies using a microprofiler with microelectrodes for measuring various parameters (e.g., oxygen, pH, hydrogen sulphide). All operations are supervised by a digital stills camera. Sediment sampling at the start and end point using coring devices handled by divers (and potentially undertaken using a Remotely Operated Vehicle) provides material to study shifts in biodiversity of the small sedimentinhabiting biota and alterations in ecosystem functioning in response to perturbations and the changing geochemical characteristics of surface sediments.

Two of them, Dasystenella acanthina and Thouarella sp., present the bottle-brush-shape type; the other two, Fannyella rossii and Fannyella spinosa, are fan-shaped. Two different reproductive patterns have been observed in D. acanthina and Thouarella sp., which point to two size classes in the frequency distribution of oocytes. This feature indicates a reproduction cycle with overlapping generations, being each of them of more than one year, probably with seasonal spawning. F. rossii and F. spinosa show only one size class of oocytes, which could point towards an annual reproductive cycle. The presence of larvae in the gastrovascular cavities in both Fanyella species and Thoaurella sp. is a sign of a possible larvae release during austral summer. The number of oocytes per polyp ranges from 1.1 ± 0.10 SE to 1.5 ± 0.06 SE, and the size ranges from 50 to 1200 μm. The number of spermatic cysts ranges from 2.6 ± 0.19 SE to 5.0 ± 0.21SE, and their sizes range from 50 to 800 μm. These values are comparable to the reproductive trends and features found in gorgonians from other latitudes, which correspond in some cases with similar morphotypes. These coincident strategies could be related to morphological similarities rather than with latitude or water temperature. Sediments sampled during summers 1999–2002 with the German ice-breaker RV “ Polarstern ” were analyzed to estimate benthic microbial activity and biomass of the smallest sediment-inhabiting organisms (size range: bacteria to meiofauna) along a channel system in the deep western Greenland Sea at about 75°N. Biochemical investigations were expanded by direct counts of bacteria and meiofaunal organisms, including foraminiferans. A total of 36 stations was sampled along the Ardencaple Canyon, extending over 200 km in north-easterly direction from the Greenland continental rise towards the central Greenland Basin. Stations were grouped in defined regions, generally with sampling sites inside the canyon plus accompanying sites on the northern and southern levees. An additional eight stations were sampled along a depth transect crossing the Greenland continental margin and traversing the channel in its midsection. All parameters investigated confirmed no differences between stations within the channel compared to stations on the levees, opposing the hypothesis that the Ardencaple Canyon displays a major pathway for suspension-driven shelf drainage flows. However, investigations showed some general trends in the data: parameters indicating food availability at the seafloor and total microbial biomass generally decreased with increasing water depth and distance from the Eastern Greenland continental margin. Along the depth transect crossing the Greenland margin both parameters exhibited increased values at deep stations on the continental rise. The position of these stations coincides with the position of the ice edge during sampling in summer 2000. Increased food availability and microbial biomass in the sediments most probably reflect raised levels of primary productivity and enhanced sedimentation in the marginal ice zone, thereby pointing to a close pelago-benthic coupling. Bacterial activities in the sediments showed a different picture with generally increasing values with increasing distance from the continental margin, which could probably be explained by a change in bacterial assemblages.

In 1995 the seasonal development of concentrations of both phytoplankton and larvae of the bivalve Macoma balthica was studied in the coastal zone behind the back-barrier island of Spiekeroog (German Wadden Sea). In July/August larvae reached maximum concentrations of about 1000 to 4200 ind. m −3 (depending on the sampling site and tidal period), probably in relation to a phytoplankton bloom in July. This observation of an unusually late maximum of Macoma larvae is discussed in detail in connection with the recent literature available about spawning of M. balthica in the Wadden Sea.

Effects of increased near-bottom flow velocities on the sedimentary environment and its associated small biota were studied in a long-term in situ experiment at 2500 m water depth at the Deep-Sea Observatory HAUSGARTEN in the eastern Fram Strait. In 2003, the Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) “Victor 6000” was used to install a stainless steel flume of about 8.5 m in length, consisting out of a 6 m long passageway with a cross-section of 50×50 cm and 3–4 m wide funnel-like doorways to increase bottom currents by a factor of approximately 6. Sediment sampling for biochemical sediment analyses, bacterial studies and meiofaunal investigations (with special focus on the nematode communities) was carried out 4 years after the installation of the flume using the ROV “Quest 4000”. The data showed clearly reduced values for parameters indicating organic matter (food) availability in the sediments, and corresponding lower bacterial and meiofaunal densities inside the flume, compared to control sites outside the channel. Results suggest that increased near-bottom currents and food deficiency not only diminish sediment-inhabiting meiofaunal assemblages but also alter the meiobenthic composition. Compared to background sediments, the nematode community inside the flume evidently showed adaptations to the overall reduced food availability and a more heterogeneous environment due to generally increased and more turbulent flow velocities. The variable environmental conditions inside the flume have an effect not only on the number of genera present, but also on the identities of the genera and the functional composition of the nematode community.

The HAUSGARTEN observatory is located in the eastern Fram Strait (Arctic Ocean) and used as long-term monitoring site to follow changes in the Arctic benthic ecosystem. Linear inverse modelling was applied to decipher carbon flows among the compartments of the benthic food web at the central HAUSGARTEN station (2500 m) based on an empirical data set consisting of data on biomass, prokaryote production, total carbon deposition and community respiration. The model resolved 99 carbon flows among 4 abiotic and 10 biotic compartments, ranging from prokaryotes up to megafauna. Total carbon input was 3.78±0.31 mmol C m −2 d −1 , which is a comparatively small fraction of total primary production in the area. The community respiration of 3.26±0.20 mmol C m −2 d −1 is dominated by prokaryotes (93%) and has lower contributions from surface-deposit feeding macro- (1.7%) and suspension feeding megafauna (1.9%), whereas contributions from nematode and other macro- and megabenthic compartments were limited to

A benthic species inventory of 1,125 taxa was compiled from various sources for the central Arctic deeper than 500 m, and bounded to the Atlantic by Fram Strait. The inventory was dominated by arthropods (366 taxa), foraminiferans (197), annelids (194), and nematodes (140). An additional 115 taxa were added from the Greenland–Iceland–Norwegian Seas (GIN). Approximately half of all taxa were recorded from only 1 or 2 locations. A large overlap in taxa with Arctic shelf species supports previous findings that part of the deep-sea fauna originates from shelf species. Macrofaunal abundance, meiofaunal abundance and macrofaunal biomass decreased significantly with water depth. Robust diversity indices could only be calculated for the polychaetes, for which S, ES(20), H’ and Delta+ decreased significantly with water depth, and all but ES(20) decreased slightly with latitude. Species evenness increased with depth and latitude. No mid-depth peak in species richness was observed. Multivariate analysis of the Eurasian, Amerasian and GIN Seas polychaete occurrences revealed a strong Atlantic influence, the absence of modern Pacific fauna, and the lack of a barrier effect by mid-Arctic ridges. Regional differences appear to be moderate on the species level and minor on the family level, although the analysis was confounded by a lack of methodological standardization and inconsistent taxonomic resolution. Future efforts should use more consistent methods to observe temporal trends and help fill the largest sampling gaps (i.e. eastern Canada Basin, depths >3,000 m, megafauna) to address how climate warming, and the shrinking of the perennial ice cover will alter deep-sea communities.
