Wide-band-gap insulators such as NiO offer the exciting prospect of coherently manipulating electronic correlations with strong optical fields. Contrary to metals where rapid dephasing of optical excitation

X-ray circular dichroism (XMCD), one of the main tools to study magnetism, benefits enormously from the capability of a fast alterable helicity of circularly polarized X-ray photons. Here we present a method for boosting the alternating frequency between right- and left-handed photons to the MHz regime, more than three orders of magnitude faster than state-of-the-art technologies. The method is based on a twin elliptical undulator installed in an electron storage ring being operated in a novel mode where the electron optics is tuned close to a resonance with electrons captured in transverse resonance island buckets. Propagating through the twin undulator, electrons from different islands emit photons of the same wavelength but of opposite helicity. These two helicity components can be alternated as fast as 2 ns. In a proof-of-principle experiment at BESSY II, we demonstrate XMCD at the L2,3 absorption edges of Ni with an 800 ns helicity flip. Rapidly switching the helicity of polarised x-rays is desirable for studying magnetic dynamics via circular dichroism spectroscopy, but has not yet been realised from synchrotron radiation sources. Here, switching between ultrafast emission of monoenergetic, circularly polarized x-rays with opposite helicity is shown within a few nanoseconds.

The relationship between the magnetic interaction and photoinduced dynamics in antiferromagnetic perovskites is investigated in this study. In La${}_{1/3}$Sr${}_{2/3}$FeO${}_{3}$ thin films, commensurate spin ordering is accompanied by charge disproportionation, whereas SrFeO${}_{3}$ thin films show incommensurate helical antiferromagnetic spin ordering due to increased ferromagnetic coupling compared to La${}_{1/3}$Sr${}_{2/3}$FeO${}_{3}$. To understand the photoinduced spin dynamics in these materials, we investigate the spin ordering through time-resolved resonant soft X-ray scattering. In La${}_{1/3}$Sr${}_{2/3}$FeO${}_{3}$, ultrafast quenching of the magnetic ordering within 130 fs through a nonthermal process is observed, triggered by charge transfer between the Fe atoms. We compare this to the photoinduced dynamics of the helical magnetic ordering of SrFeO${}_{3}$. We find that the change in the magnetic coupling through optically induced charge transfer can offer an even more efficient channel for spin-order manipulation., 7 pages, 5 figures

However, it is currently unknown if the bosonic dressing field is composed of phonons or magnons. Here we use the prototypical charge-transfer insulator NiO to demonstrate that 1.5 eV sub-gap optical excitation leads to a renormalised NiO band-gap in combination with a significant reduction of the antiferromagnetic order. We employ element-specific X-ray reflectivity at the FLASH free-electron laser to demonstrate the reduction of the upper band-edge at the O 1s–2p core–valence resonance (K-edge) whereas the antiferromagnetic order is probed via X-ray magnetic linear dichroism (XMLD) at the Ni 2p–3d resonance (L$_2$-edge). Comparing the transient XMLD spectral line shape to ground-state measurements allows us to extract a spin temperature rise of 65 ± 5 K for time delays longer than 400 fs while at earlier times a non-equilibrium spin state is formed. We identify transient mid-gap states being formed during the first 200 fs accompanied by a band-gap reduction lasting at least up to the maximum measured time delay of 2.4 ps. We find the effect for both elements to occur simultaneously on a femtosecond timescale. This effect may hence be used as a handy cross correlation scheme, providing a time-zero reference for ultrafast optical-pump soft x-ray-probe measurement. The method benefits from a relatively simple experimental setup as the sample itself acts as time-reference tool. In particular, this technique works with low flux ultrafast soft x-ray sources. The measurements are compared to the cross correlation method introduced in an earlier publication.

The authors measure the effects of uniaxial tensile-stress on a prototypical stripe-ordered cuprate, showing that a modest amount of stress creates large changes in the phase diagram.

We have successfully grown centimeter-sized layered $$\textit{R}\mathrm{SrNiO}_{4}$$ R SrNiO 4 single crystals under high oxygen pressures of 120–150 bar by the floating zone technique. This enabled us to perform neutron scattering experiments where we observe close to quarter-integer magnetic peaks below $$\sim 77~\mathrm{K}$$ ∼ 77 K that are accompanied by steep upwards dispersing spin excitations. Within the high-frequency Ni–O bond stretching phonon dispersion, a softening at the propagation vector for a checkerboard modulation can be observed. We were able to simulate the magnetic excitation spectra using a model that includes two essential ingredients, namely checkerboard charge disproportionation and nano phase separation. The results thus suggest that charge disproportionation is preferred instead of a Jahn–Teller distortion even for this layered $$\mathrm{Ni}^{3+}$$ Ni 3 + system.

We study the ultrafast demagnetization of Ni/NiMn and Co/NiMn ferromagnetic/antiferromagnetic bilayer systems after excitation by a laser pulse. We probe the ferromagnetic order of Ni and Co using magnetic circular dichroism in time-resolved pump--probe resonant X-ray reflectivity. Tuning the sample temperature across the antiferromagnetic ordering temperature of the NiMn layer allows to investigate effects induced by the magnetic order of the latter. The presence of antiferromagnetic order in NiMn speeds up the demagnetization of the ferromagnetic layer, which is attributed to bidirectional laser-induced superdiffusive spin currents between the ferromagnetic and the antiferromagnetic layer., 20 pages, 6 figures

We present evidence for an ultrafast optically induced ferromagnetic alignment of antiferromagnetic Mn in Co/Mn multilayers. We observe the transient ferromagnetic signal at the arrival of the pump pulse at the Mn L$_3$ resonance using x-ray magnetic circular dichroism in reflectivity. The timescale of the effect is comparable to the duration of the excitation and occurs before the magnetization in Co is quenched. Theoretical calculations point to the imbalanced population of Mn unoccupied states caused by the Co interface for the emergence of this transient ferromagnetic state., 6 pages, 3 figures

Vanadium dioxide (VO2) is a much-discussed material for oxide electronics and neuromorphic computing applications. Here, heteroepitaxy of VO2 is realized on top of oxide nanosheets that cover either the amorphous silicon dioxide surfaces of Si substrates or X-ray transparent silicon nitride membranes. The out-of-plane orientation of the VO2 thin films is controlled at will between (011)M1/(110)R and (−402)M1/(002)R by coating the bulk substrates with Ti0.87O2 and NbWO6 nanosheets, respectively, prior to VO2 growth. Temperature-dependent X-ray diffraction and automated crystal orientation mapping in microprobe transmission electron microscope mode (ACOM-TEM) characterize the high phase purity, the crystallographic and orientational properties of the VO2 films. Transport measurements and soft X-ray absorption in transmission are used to probe the VO2 metal–insulator transition, showing results of a quality equal to those from epitaxial films on bulk single-crystal substrates. Successful local manipulation of two different VO2 orientations on a single substrate is demonstrated using VO2 grown on lithographically patterned lines of Ti0.87O2 and NbWO6 nanosheets investigated by electron backscatter diffraction. Finally, the excellent suitability of these nanosheet-templated VO2 films for advanced lensless imaging of the metal–insulator transition using coherent soft X-rays is discussed.

Condensed Matter 4(3), 77 (2019). doi:10.3390/condmat4030077, In several strongly correlated electron systems, the short range ordering of defects, charge and local lattice distortions are found to show complex inhomogeneous spatial distributions. There is growing evidence that such inhomogeneity plays a fundamental role in unique functionality of quantum complex materials. $\mathrm{La_{1.72}Sr_{0.28}NiO_{4}}$ is a prototypical strongly correlated perovskite showing spin stripes order. In this work we present the spatial distribution of the spin order inhomogeneity by applying micro X-ray diffraction to $\mathrm{La_{1.72}Sr_{0.28}NiO_{4}}$, mapping the spin-density-wave order below the 120 K onset temperature. We find that the spin-density-wave order shows the formation of nanoscale puddles with large spatial fluctuations. The nano-puddle density changes on the microscopic scale forming a multiscale phase separation extending from nanoscale to micron scale with scale-free distribution. Indeed spin-density-wave striped puddles are disconnected by spatial regions with negligible spin-density-wave order. Physical review letters 127(5), 057001 (2021). doi:10.1103/PhysRevLett.127.057001, We study the temporal stability of stripe-type spin order in a layered nickelate with x-ray photon correlation spectroscopy and observe fluctuations on timescales of tens of minutes over a wide temperature range. These fluctuations show an anomalous temperature dependence: they slow down at intermediate temperatures and speed up on both heating and cooling. This behavior appears to be directly connected with spatial correlations: stripes fluctuate slowly when stripe correlation lengths are large and become faster when spatial correlations decrease. A low-temperature decay of nickelate stripe correlations, reminiscent of what occurs in cuprates as a result of a competition between stripes and superconductivity, hence occurs via loss of both spatial and temporal correlations., Published by APS, College Park, Md.

The slicing facility FemtoSpeX at BESSY II offers unique opportunities to study photo-induced dynamics on femtosecond time scales by means of X-ray magnetic circular dichroism, resonant and non-resonant X-ray diffraction, and X-ray absorption spectroscopy experiments in the soft X-ray regime. Besides femtosecond X-ray pulses, slicing sources inherently also produce a so-called `halo' background with a different time structure, polarization and pointing. Here a detailed experimental characterization of the halo radiation is presented, and a method is demonstrated for its correct and unambiguous removal from femtosecond time-resolved data using a special laser triggering scheme as well as analytical models. Examples are given for time-resolved measurements with corresponding halo correction, and errors of the relevant physical quantities caused by either neglecting or by applying a simplified model to describe this background are estimated.

We present a study of the charge order of 214 stripe ordered superconducting cuprates $({\mathrm{La}}_{1.6\ensuremath{-}x}{\mathrm{Nd}}_{0.4}){\mathrm{Sr}}_{x}{\mathrm{CuO}}_{4}$ and ${\mathrm{La}}_{2\ensuremath{-}x}{\mathrm{Ba}}_{x}{\mathrm{CuO}}_{4}$ for doping levels $0.11\ensuremath{\le}\mathit{p}\ensuremath{\le}0.14$ by means of resonant x-ray scattering. Up to 6 T, we find no field dependence on either the integrated intensity or the correlation length of the charge modulations, providing evidence for strong stability of charge order under applied fields. The magnetic field data support a strong pinning scenario induced by the low-temperature tetragonal distortion and static disorder, and they highlight the role of the symmetry of the lattice on the stabilization of electronic periodicities.

By comparing femtosecond laser pulse induced ferro- and antiferromagnetic dynamics in one and the same material - metallic dysprosium - we show both to behave fundamentally different. Antiferromagnetic order is considerably faster and much more efficiently manipulated by optical excitation than its ferromagnetic counterpart. We assign the fast and extremely efficient process in the antiferromagnet to an interatomic transfer of angular momentum within the spin system. Using femtosecond time-resolved resonant magnetic x-ray diffraction at the Ho L3 absorption edge, we investigate the demagnetization dynamics in antiferromagnetically ordered metallic Ho after femtosecond optical excitation. Tuning the x-ray energy to the electric dipole (E1, 2p -> 5d) or quadrupole (E2, 2p -> 4f) transition allows us to selectively and independently study the spin dynamics of the itinerant 5d and localized 4f electronic subsystems via the suppression of the magnetic (2 1 3-tau ) satellite peak. We find demagnetization timescales very similar to ferromagnetic 4f systems, suggesting that the loss of magnetic order occurs via a similar spin-flip process in both cases. The simultaneous demagnetization of both subsystems demonstrates strong intra-atomic 4f-5d exchange coupling. In addition, an ultrafast lattice contraction due to the release of magnetostriction leads to a transient shift of the magnetic satellite peak.

We studied the electronic and magnetic dynamics of ferromagnetic insulating BaFeO3 thin films by using pump-probe time-resolved resonant x-ray reflectivity at the Fe 2p edge. By changing the excitation density, we found two distinctly different types of demagnetization with a clear threshold behavior. We assigned the demagnetization change from slow (~ 150 ps) to fast (< 70 ps) to a transition into a metallic state induced by laser excitation. These results provide a novel approach for locally tuning magnetic dynamics. In analogy to heat assisted magnetic recording, metallization can locally tune the susceptibility for magnetic manipulation, allowing to spatially encode magnetic information., 5 pages, 4 figures

Structural dynamics 5(5), 054501 (2018). doi:10.1063/1.5042847, We present a general experimental concept for jitter-free pump and probe experiments at free electron lasers. By generating pump and probe pulse from one and the same X-ray pulse using an optical split-and-delay unit, we obtain a temporal resolution that is limited only by the X-ray pulse lengths. In a two-color X-ray pump and X-ray probe experiment with sub 70 fs temporal resolution, we selectively probe the response of orbital and charge degree of freedom in the prototypical functional oxide magnetite after photoexcitation. We find electronic order to be quenched on a time scale of (30 ± 30) fs and hence most likely faster than what is to be expected for any lattice dynamics. Our experimental result hints to the formation of a short lived transient state with decoupled electronic and lattice degree of freedom in magnetite. The excitation and relaxation mechanism for X-ray pumping is discussed within a simple model leading to the conclusion that within the first 10 fs the original photoexcitation decays into low-energy electronic excitations comparable to what is achieved by optical pump pulse excitation. Our findings show on which time scales dynamical decoupling of degrees of freedom in functional oxides can be expected and how to probe this selectively with soft X-ray pulses. We have investigated the efficiency and limits of polarization dependent hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (HAXPES) in order to establish how well this method can be used to unravel quantitatively the contributions of the orbitals forming the valence band of solids. By rotating the energy analyzer rather than the polarization vector of the light using a phase retarder, we obtained the advantage that the full polarization of the light is available for the investigation. Using NiO, ZnO, and Cu2O as examples for solid state materials, we established that the polarization dependence is much larger than in photoemission experiments utilizing ultra-violet or soft X-ray light. Yet we also have discovered that the polarization dependence is less than complete on the basis of atomic calculations, strongly suggesting that the trajectories of the outgoing electrons are affected by appreciable side-scattering processes even at these high kinetic energies. We have found in our experiment that these can be effectively described as a directional spread of +/- 18 degrees of the photoelectrons. This knowledge allows us to identify, for example, reliably the Ni 3d spectral weight of the NiO valence band and at the same time to demonstrate the importance of the Ni 4s for the chemical stability of the compound. Magnetic soft X-ray scattering at the Ho M5 resonance was characterized using thin films, thus reducing the effect of the strong photon absorption. Magnetic scattering factors are found to be as large as 200 r 0 at resonance, while the effective probing depth of the X-rays at the resonance maximum is of the order of 30 A at 2 θ = 25 ∘ . The huge enhancement of magnetic scattering allows one to study ultrathin Ho films, which is exploited to investigate the thickness dependence of the Neel temperature in these long-period antiferromagnets. The tunable X-ray penetration depth across the resonance can be used for magnetic depth profiling, e.g. to study the depth-dependent growth of antiferromagnetic domains across the ferromagnetic/antiferromagnetic phase transition in Dy metal films.

We studied the magnetization dynamics of gadolinium metal after femtosecond laser excitation recording the x-ray magnetic circular dichroism in reflection (XMCD-R) at the Gd M 5 absorption edge. Varying the photon energy of the pump pulse allows us to change the initial energy distribution of photoexcited carriers. The overall similar response for excitation with 0.95, 1.55 and 3.10 eV photons at comparable pump fluences indicates that ultrafast ballistic carrier transport leads to a homogeneous energy distribution on the femtosecond timescale in the probed sample volume. Differences are observed in the initial ultrafast demagnetization magnitude. They are attributed to an enhanced spin-flip probability at higher electron energies characterizing the non-thermal electron distribution.

The magnetic structure of ultrathin Ho–metal films grown on W(110) was studied by resonant magnetic X-ray scattering at the L3 and M5 resonances. For Ho films down to 14 monolayer (ML) thickness, a bulk-like helical antiferromagnetic structure is observed. For a 10-ML thick film, an altered magnetic structure and enhanced layer spacing is found.

Systematic magnetic effects in the band structure of the heavy lanthanide metals Gd, Tb, Dy, and Ho were studied by angle-resolved photoemission from epitaxial films. The temperature-dependent exchange splitting exhibits a different behavior for delocalized and localized band states. For the delocalized Δ 2 bulk band states, a Stoner-like temperature dependence of the splitting is observed in ferromagnetic and helical antiferromagnetic phases. A more localized oxygen-induced surface state shows a temperature-independent contribution to the splitting. All observed magnetic splittings scale with the 4f spin moment.

To elucidate charge and orbital order below the Verwey transition temperature ${T}_{\mathrm{V}}\ensuremath{\sim}125$ K, a thin layer of magnetite partially detwined by growth on the stepped MgO(001) substrate has been studied by means of soft x-ray diffraction at the Fe ${L}_{2,3}$ resonance. The azimuth angle, incident photon polarization, and energy dependence of the ${(00\frac{1}{2})}_{c}$ and ${(001)}_{c}$ reflection intensities have been measured, and analyzed using a configuration-interaction FeO${}_{6}$ cluster model. The azimuth dependence of the ${(00\frac{1}{2})}_{c}$ reflection intensities directly represents the space-group symmetry of the orbital order in the initial state rather than indirectly through the intermediate-state level shifts caused by the order-induced lattice distortions. From the analysis of the ${(00\frac{1}{2})}_{c}$ reflection intensities, the orbital order in the ${t}_{2g}$ orbitals of $B$ sites below ${T}_{\mathrm{V}}$ is proved to have a large monoclinic deformation with the value of $\mathrm{Re}[{F}_{xy}]/\mathrm{Re}[{F}_{yz}]\ensuremath{\sim}2$. This finding contradicts the majority of theories on the Verwey transition so far proposed. We show that the experimentally observed resonance spectra cannot be explained by orbital and charge orders obtained with recent LDA+$U$ and GGA+$U$ band structure calculations but by a complex-number orbital order with excellent agreement.

We report very highly resolved photoemission spectra of ${\mathrm{NiS}}_{1\ensuremath{-}x}{\mathrm{Se}}_{x}$ across the so-called metal-insulator transition as a function of temperature as well as composition. The present results convincingly demonstrate that the low temperature, antiferromagnetic phase is metallic, with a reduced density of states at ${E}_{F}$. This decrease is due possibly to the opening of gaps along specific directions in the Brillouin zone caused by the antiferromagnetic ordering.

As the first oxide in which a relationship between electrical conductivity and fluctuating/localized electronic order was shown1, magnetite represents a model system for understanding correlated oxides in general. Nevertheless, the exact mechanism of the insulator–metal, or Verwey, transition has long remained inaccessible. Recently, three-Fe-site lattice distortions called trimerons were identified as the characteristic building blocks of the low-temperature insulating electronically ordered phase9. Here we investigate the Verwey transition with pump–probe X-ray diffraction and optical reflectivity techniques, and show how trimerons become mobile across the insulator–metal transition. We find this to be a two-step process. After an initial 300 fs destruction of individual trimerons, phase separation occurs on a 1.5±0.2 ps timescale to yield residual insulating and metallic regions. We used fs- and ps- resonant magnetic x-ray diffraction to probe the laser-induced changes to the magnetic profile in thin films of the antiferromagnetic semicon-ductor EuTe.

At BESSY II a confocal plane grating spectrometer for resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) is currently under commissioning. The new endstation operates with a source size of 4 × 1 μm 2 provided by its dedicated beamline. The RIXS-spectrometer covers an energy range from 50 eV to 1000 eV, providing a resolving power E /Δ E of 5000–15,000. The beamline allows full polarization control and gives a photon flux of up to 7 × 10 14 photons/s/0.1 A/0.1%bandwidth by offering a resolving power E /Δ E of 4000–12,000.

Nature 501(7466), 191 - 194 (2013). doi:10.1038/nature12449, Resonant inelastic X-ray scattering and X-ray emission spectroscopy can be used to probe the energy and dispersion of the elementary low-energy excitations that govern functionality in matter: vibronic, charge, spin and orbital excitations. A key drawback of resonant inelastic X-ray scattering has been the need for high photon densities to compensate for fluorescence yields of less than a per cent for soft X-rays8. Sample damage from the dominant non-radiative decays thus limits the materials to which such techniques can be applied and the spectral resolution that can be obtained. A means of improving the yield is therefore highly desirable. Here we demonstrate stimulated X-ray emission for crystalline silicon at photon densities that are easily achievable with free-electron lasers. The stimulated radiative decay of core excited species at the expense of non-radiative processes reduces sample damage and permits narrow-bandwidth detection in the directed beam of stimulated radiation. We deduce how stimulated X-ray emission can be enhanced by several orders of magnitude to provide, with high yield and reduced sample damage, a superior probe for low-energy excitations and their dispersion in matter. Dynamics in materials typically involve different degrees of freedom, like charge, lattice, orbital and spin in a complex interplay. Time-resolved resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) as a highly selective tool can provide unique insight and follow the details of dynamical processes while resolving symmetries, chemical and charge states, momenta, spin configurations, etc. In this paper, we review examples where the intrinsic scattering duration time is used to study femtosecond phenomena. Free-electron lasers access timescales starting in the sub-ps range through pump-probe methods and synchrotrons study the time scales longer than tens of ps. In these examples, time-resolved resonant inelastic X-ray scattering is applied to solids as well as molecular systems.

We report on a systematic study of thermal effects on 4f photoemission (PE) spectra from close-packed surfaces of the monocrystalline lanthanide metals Tb, Yb, and Lu, in particular on broadening of surface and bulk lines. Such effects can be best studied for Yb(111) and Lu(0001), which display the hitherto best resolved surface-shifted PE components. In all studied cases, the PE lines from the topmost surface layer exhibit much stronger thermal broadening than those from the bulk, with reduced surface Debye temperatures. The broadening is found to be larger for the trivalent metals Tb and Lu as compared to divalent Yb metal.

The partially filled, magnetically-active d-like surface state on Tb(0001) was studied by photoemission and inverse photoemission at temperatures above as well as below the bulk Curie temperature of Tb metal. Upon cooling, the weight of the occupied surface state increases, while that of the empty surface state decreases. No temperature-dependent energy shifts of the surface states and, hence, no indication of a Stoner-like behavior of the exchange splitting were found. The results can be interpreted on the basis of a generalized theory of magnetism, which predicts a change of relative spectral weights of spin-majority and spin-minority subbands with temperature.

A collective order of spin and charge degrees of freedom into stripes has been predicted to be a possible ground state of hole-doped CuO(2) planes, which are the building blocks of high-temperature superconductors. In fact, stripe-like spin and charge order has been observed in various layered cuprate systems. For the prototypical high-temperature superconductor La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO(4), no charge-stripe signal has been found so far, but several indications for a proximity to their formation. Here we report the observation of a pronounced charge-stripe signal in the near surface region of 12-percent doped La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO(4). We conclude that this compound is sufficiently close to charge stripe formation that small perturbations or reduced dimensionality near the surface can stabilize this order. Our finding of different phases in the bulk and near the surface of La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO(4) should be relevant for the interpretation of data from surface-sensitive probes, which are widely used for La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO(4) and similar systems.

We report the direct observation of slow fluctuations of helical antiferromagnetic domains in an ultra-thin holmium film using coherent resonant magnetic x-ray scattering. We observe a gradual increase of the fluctuations in the speckle pattern with increasing temperature, while at the same time a static contribution to the speckle pattern remains. This finding indicates that domain-wall fluctuations occur over a large range of time scales. We ascribe this non-ergodic behavior to the strong dependence of the fluctuation rate on the local thickness of the film., to appear in Phys. Rev. Lett

We studied the (001/2) diffraction peak in the low-temperature phase of magnetite (Fe3O4) using resonant soft x-ray diffraction (RSXD) at the Fe-L2,3 and O-K resonance. We studied both molecular-beam-epitaxy (MBE) grown thin films and in-situ cleaved single crystals. From the comparison we have been able to determine quantitatively the contribution of intrinsic absorption effects, thereby arriving at a consistent result for the (001/2) diffraction peak spectrum. Our data also allow for the identification of extrinsic effects, e.g. for a detailed modeling of the spectra in case a "dead" surface layer is present that is only absorbing photons but does not contribute to the scattering signal., Comment: to appear in Phys. Resonant soft x-ray diffraction (RSXD) with femtosecond (fs) time resolution is a powerful tool for disentangling the interplay between different degrees of freedom in strongly correlated electron materials. It allows addressing the coupling of particular degrees of freedom upon an external selective perturbation, e. g., by an optical or infrared laser pulse. Here, we report a time-resolved RSXD experiment from the prototypical correlated electron material magnetite using soft x-ray pulses from the free-electron laser FLASH in Hamburg. We observe ultrafast melting of the charge-orbital order leading to the formation of a transient phase, which has not been observed in equilibrium.
