A qualitative study using basic interpretive design identified the experiences of stress and barriers to professional help seeking among Filipino Americans (

A grounded theory study was employed to identify the conditions contributing to the core phenomenon of Asian American activists (N = 25) mobilizing toward thick solidarity with the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement in 2020. The findings indicate achieving a collective oppressed identity was necessary to mobilize in thick solidarity with the BLM movement and occurred because of causal conditions: (a) experiences of COVID-19–related anti-Asian discrimination, and (b) George Floyd’s murder. Non-action, performative or unhelpful action, and action toward thick solidarity were influenced by contextual factors: (a) alignment with personal and community values, (b) awareness and knowledge, and (c) perspectives of oppression. Mobilization was also influenced by intervening factors, which included affective responses, intergenerational conflict, conditioning of “privileges” afforded by White supremacy, and the presence of organized communities. Mental health professionals and social justice advocates can apply these findings to promote engagement in the community organizing efforts of Asian American and Pacific Islander communities with the BLM movement, denounce anti-Blackness, and uphold a culpability toward supporting the Black community.

Researchers have documented the disproportionate amount of racism against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPIs) and a wide swath of exclusionary leadership practices in professional contexts (e.g., higher education, academia, professional associations). AAPI leaders have been largely underrepresented in counseling leadership, higher education, and the broader profession. Due to stereotypes associated with the bamboo ceiling and the model minority, AAPI communities are overlooked for advancement and leadership opportunities while experiencing racial discrimination in a given context (e.g., workplace). However, AAPI leaders can draw from multiple pathways that instill liberation and leverage activism to sustain their footing in leadership spaces. Using an AsianCrit paradigm and critical collaborative autoethnography, seven Asian American counseling leaders explored their experiences with leadership to illustrate the cultural contexts that identified opportunities for solidarity, liberation, and activism. Findings culminated in four themes: (1) recognition; (2) embracing standpoint, social identities, and cultural heritage; (3) resisting through research, scholarship, and leadership; and (4) leaning on community.

The emergence and global spread of COVID-19 precipitated a massive public health crisis combined with multiple incidents of racial discrimination and violence toward Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities. Although East Asian communities are more frequently targeted for instances of pandemic-related racial discrimination, multiple disparities converge upon Filipino communities that affect their access to mental health care in light of COVID-19. This article empowers professional counselors to support the Filipino community by addressing three main areas: (a) describing how COVID-19 contributes to racial microaggressions and institutional racism toward Filipino communities; (b) underscoring how COVID-19 exacerbates exposure to stressors and disparities that influence help-seeking behaviors and utilization of counseling among Filipinos; and (c) outlining how professional counselors can promote racial socialization, outreach, and mental health equity with Filipino communities to mitigate the effects of COVID-19.

This study investigated how rehabilitation counselors integrated their use of psychometric instruments into clinical practice. The primary aim was to determine how psychometric instruments interact with clinical judgment during assessment as well as what ethical concerns practitioners have. The sample consisted of 228 participants from the International Association for Rehabilitation Professionals (IARP) and the American Board of Vocational Experts (ABVE), whom responded to an electronic survey distributed through listservs. Participants responded to a quantitative section regarding overall assessment use, followed-up by a qualitative section with open response prompts. Results provided a preliminary investigation into the selection of psychometric assessments utilized by rehabilitation counselors and the degree to which this process affects ethical and clinical judgment. These findings, in consideration with previous literature, highlight the need for improved training on the selection and utilization of psychometric assessments.

The school counseling profession has an ethical responsibility to provide and advocate for individual students’ career planning and development, while expanding school counselors’ own multicultural and social justice advocacy to become effective culturally competent professionals. Additional literature is needed to identify how school counselors can adapt their career counseling approaches to fit the unique challenges and barriers of historically marginalized students both during and after the global COVID-19 pandemic. We describe how school counselors can use intersectionality theory as a framework for career development with marginalized populations in response to COVID-19 and its impact on the economic decline.

BackgroundOver the last 40 years advances in the field of rehabilitation counseling continue to play a major role in the professional identity, skills, and competencies of rehabilitation counselors. While advances have developed in several areas (e.g., multiculturalism, ethics) within the scope of rehabilitation counseling research and practice, there are research gaps for vocational evaluation and the psychometric properties of instruments utilized for assessment.ObjectiveThis study sought to investigate what psychometric instruments rehabilitation counselors utilize for assessment. Primarily, our goal was to seek major details in how practicing rehabilitation counselors utilize psychometric assessments in their work environments and any ethical concerns involved with their use. We sought to investigate the presence of what assessment tools are commonly used by rehabilitation counseling practitioners and the frequency with which they are used.MethodsData from 228 participants was analyzed using a mixed-methods research design with a goal of obtaining both quantitative and qualitative data simultaneously. We sought to determine if there were any statistically significant differences on whether demographic variables affected the selection and use of psychometric assessments.FindingsAverage use of psychometric instruments for assessment use for the entire sample was low, at .66 (between “never” and “sometimes”). Average assessment use for the five subgroups ranged from .37 (body system function) to .99 (interests). Average use for individual assessments ranged from .08 to 2.07. There was a significant effect for education, (R2 = .039 F(1) = 8.82, p = .003).ConclusionsResults indicate higher education levels were associated with increased utilization of psychometric instruments. In addition, collaboration between psychometric assessments and clinical judgment have proven to be valuable in overall quality of rehabilitation services provided.

LGBTQ elders have faced several eras of social and political changes that entail minority stress, psychosocial stressors, and resilience. Although LGBTQ research and psychological practice has increased dramatically in the last two decades, researchers from a myriad of disciplines are distinctly paying attention to LGBTQ elders, older adults, and gerontology. This alarming gap has been rendered more visible through the concurrent forces of ageism within the broader experiences of LGBTQ communities. Ageism generally influences several social determinants of health, including discrimination, barriers to seeking help, housing, and financial concerns. Combined with the lens of intersectionality, structural forces of oppression considerably conflate with ageism, including racism, classism, genderism, and heterosexism. This chapter addresses three main goals: (a) an overview of contemporary research involving LGBTQ elders, aging, and gerontology; (b) theoretical underpinnings of intersectionality to reflect LGBTQ elders with other dimensions of culture and forces of oppression; and (c) considerations for practice and research areas with LGBTQ elders.

The emergence of interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) in qualitative scholarship offers a means to derive in-depth meaning attending to the complexities of lived experience. IPA extends qualitative inquiry through a double hermeneutic whereby the researcher is making sense of the experiences of participants who are making sense of a phenomenon. In this article, the authors present seminal empirical studies using IPA with lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, gender expansive, queer communities, argue a rationale for its usefulness, discuss methodological insights and strategies, and offer potential future directions.

Advocacy and social justice initiatives for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and questioning (LGBTQ) clients in counseling emphasize counselor and client collaboration in challenging discrimination and oppression and promoting LGBTQ inclusive sociopolitical changes. Although researchers have highlighted the counseling and advocacy needs of LGBTQ populations, few have yet examined processes for assessing the outcomes of advocacy efforts. Advocacy evaluation may provide counselors and counseling organizations with a framework for monitoring and assessing the outcomes of LGBTQ advocacy initiatives. There is an extensive need to explore the intersection of spirituality in conjunction with sexuality, gender identity, and affectional identity as a result of the nuanced complexity and paucity of conceptual and empirical literature in this area, which holds to a substantial diversity between and within identities. Furthering this exploration is the consistent dialogue of spirituality for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) community that offers context at-large and in heavy concentration in other areas of the life span, yet integrates far less into spirituality for youth and, more specifically, for LGBTQ+ youth. This article generates a conceptual framework derived from the ecological systems model and intersectionality theory to deliver insights relevant to addressing systemic barriers, practices, and complexities in attending to spirituality for LGBTQ+ youth.

Queer theory and intersectionality theory have emerged as prominent paradigms guiding decisions for research design and methodology in educational research. Despite their increasing prominence and implementation in educational research, applying these paradigms can result in confusion and conflation without understanding their unique distinctions. Additionally, queer theory and intersectionality theory each carry their own legacies, predecessors, and philosophical underpinnings. Queer theory primarily focuses on disrupting the restrictions associated with binaries and identity categories, whereas intersectionality theory involves an examination of social identities (e.g., race, sexuality, gender identity) and intersections to understand power relations and inequities. With an overarching introduction to queer theory and intersectionality theory as two distinct paradigms, this chapter involves the following goals: (a) explain key aspects of queer theory and intersectionality theory as distinct paradigms; (b) identify differences between queer theory and intersectionality theory; and (c) provide recommendations for understanding paradigmatic differences in research.

Intersectionality continues to be taken up as a promising framework across multiple disciplines for practices involving equity, inclusion, and social justice. Increased use of intersectionality has resulted in the development of an intersectionality-based policy analysis (IBPA) intended for multiple settings and contexts, despite its roots in health policy. Young men of color in schools face numerous forms of racial violence and oppression, including interpersonal violence, harm, misrepresentation in society, deficit models, and structural oppression. This article describes the implementation of an IBPA to navigate structures of oppression within school climates and to design a systematic agenda toward equity for males of color in schools.

Intuitively distinguishing the myriad of critically informed paradigms requires an in-depth analysis of genealogies, histories, and philosophical underpinnings grounding each paradigm. Despite significant parallels between queer theory and intersectionality theory, the distinction of these two paradigms acts in both complicated and complementary manners that necessitate a dialogue on the contributions emanating from both paradigms to LGBTQ studies. This article targets the following goals: (1) explicate genealogy, history, and philosophical tenets of intersectionality and queer theory; (2) dialogue about the complementary yet complex relationships between the two paradigms; and (3) illustrate the promise of the complex relationship and distinction for LGBTQ studies.

Because of the complex nature of the counseling profession, many students find great benefit in a supportive mentor. Mentors can assist professionals in becoming more grounded in their profession. Mentors can help teach the importance of professional identity and provide up and coming professionals with a role model for clinical skills, scholarly writing and ethical practice. Additionally, new counselor educators often seek out mentors who can guide them into the professorate, and learning how to mentor new professionals is also a skill to develop. This chapter articulates how mentors can play a critical and distinct role in the professional development of helping professionals.

Intercultural queer couples are growing at an extensive rate in the United States, exemplifying diversity across multiple dimensions (e.g., race, ethnicity, sexuality, affectional identity, gender identity) while experiencing multiple converging forms of oppression (e.g., racism, heterosexism, genderism). Given the dearth of conceptual and empirical literature that unifies both dimensions related to intercultural and queer, applied practices and research contend with a unilateral approach focusing exclusively on either intercultural or queer couples. Intersectionality theory has revolutionized critical scholarship to determine overlapping forms of oppression, decenter hegemonic structures of power relations and social contexts, and enact a social justice agenda. This article addresses the following aims: (1) an overview of the gaps eliciting unilateral approaches to intercultural queer couples; (2) an illustration of intersectionality's theoretical underpinnings as a critical approach; and (3) applications for insights in practices and research with intercultural queer couples.

The primary purpose of this mixed-methods study was to identify the current training needs of rehabilitation counselors in the private sector. Four hundred twenty-six participants completed the Knowledge Validation Inventory–Revised. The self-reported needs for training are reported across the 10 knowledge domains of rehabilitation counseling. The overall training needs (TN) score for the sample was moderate. For the broader knowledge domains, respondents reported the highest mean TN scores for Case Management and Utilization of Community Resources, Disability Management, Vocational Consultation, and Services for Employers. A secondary purpose was to compare the self-perceived training needs of rehabilitation counselors who are certified rehabilitation counselors (CRCs) with those of counselors who do not possess a CRC. Higher reported training needs were indicated for individuals without CRCs. A third purpose was to examine the relationship between counselor demographic variables and training needs. Gender and years of experiences were significant predictors of perceived training needs. Finally, the following areas were identified as the most significant training needs for private rehabilitation counselors in the field today: multicultural competence, private vocational rehabilitation, labor market research skills, ethics, and forensic case management.
