Abstract

We report the $p+p$ and $p+d$ differential cross sections measured in the SeaQuest experiment for $J/\psi$ and $\psi\left(2S\right)$ production at 120 GeV beam energy covering the forward $x$-Feynman ($x_F$) range of $0.5 < x_F <0.9$. The measured cross sections are in good agreement with theoretical calculations based on the nonrelativistic QCD (NRQCD) using the long-distance matrix elements deduced from a recent global analysis of proton- and pion-induced charmonium production data. The $\sigma_{\psi\left(2S\right)} / \sigma_{J/\psi}$ cross section ratios are found to increase as $x_F$ increases, indicating that the $q \bar{q}$ annihilation process has larger contributions in the $\psi\left(2S\right)$ production than the $J/\psi$ production. The $\sigma_{pd}/2\sigma_{pp}$ cross section ratios are observed to be significantly different for the Drell-Yan process and $J/\psi$ production, reflecting their different production mechanisms. We find that the $\sigma_{pd}/2\sigma_{pp}$ ratios for $J/\psi$ production at the forward $x_F$ region are sensitive to the $\bar{d}/ \bar{u}$ flavor asymmetry of the proton sea, analogous to the Drell-Yan process. The transverse momentum ($p_T$) distributions for $J/\psi$ and $\psi\left(2S\right)$ production are also presented and compared with data collected at higher center-of-mass energies., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures, with 1 page of supplementary material which has 2 figures

Abstract

Evidence for a flavor asymmetry between the $\bar u$ and $\bar d$ quark distributions in the proton has been found in deep-inelastic scattering and Drell-Yan experiments. The pronounced dependence of this flavor asymmetry on $x$ (fraction of nucleon momentum carried by partons) observed in the Fermilab E866 Drell-Yan experiment suggested a drop of the $\bar d\left(x\right) / \bar u\left(x\right)$ ratio in the $x > 0.15$ region. We report results from the SeaQuest Fermilab E906 experiment with improved statistical precision for $\bar d\left(x\right) / \bar u\left(x\right)$ in the large $x$ region up to $x=0.45$ using the 120 GeV proton beam. Two different methods for extracting the Drell-Yan cross section ratios, $\sigma^{pd} /2 \sigma^{pp}$, from the SeaQuest data give consistent results. The $\bar{d}\left(x\right) / \bar{u}\left(x\right)$ ratios and the $\bar d\left(x\right) - \bar u\left(x\right)$ differences are deduced from these cross section ratios for $0.13 < x < 0.45$. The SeaQuest and E866/NuSea $\bar{d}\left(x\right) / \bar{u}\left(x\right)$ ratios are in good agreement for the $x\lesssim 0.25$ region. The new SeaQuest data, however, show that $\bar d\left(x\right)$ continues to be greater than $\bar u\left(x\right)$ up to the highest $x$ value ($x = 0.45$). The new results on $\bar{d}\left(x\right) / \bar{u}\left(x\right)$ and $\bar{d}\left(x\right) - \bar{u}\left(x\right)$ are compared with various parton distribution functions and theoretical calculations.

Abstract

The fundamental building blocks of the proton, quarks and gluons, have been known for decades. However, we still have an incomplete theoretical and experimental understanding of how these particles and their dynamics give rise to the quantum bound state of the proton and its physical properties, such as for example its spin. The two up and the single down quarks that comprise the proton in the simplest picture account only for a few percent of the proton mass, the bulk of which is in the form of quark kinetic and potential energy and gluon energy from the strong force. An essential feature of this force, as described by quantum chromodynamics, is its ability to create matter-antimatter quark pairs inside the proton that exist only for a very short time. Their fleeting existence makes the antimatter quarks within protons difficult to study, but their existence is discernible in reactions where a matter-antimatter quark pair annihilates. In this picture of quark-antiquark creation by the strong force, the probability distributions as a function of momentum for the presence of up and down antimatter quarks should be nearly identical, since their masses are quite similar and small compared to the mass of the proton. In the present manuscript, we show evidence from muon pair production measurements that these distributions are significantly different, with more abundant down antimatter quarks than up antimatter quarks over a wide range of momentum. These results revive interest in several proposed mechanisms as the origin of this antimatter asymmetry in the proton that had been disfavored by the previous results and point to the future measurements that can distinguish between these mechanisms., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, 5 tables; Matches published version

Abstract

The SeaQuest spectrometer at Fermilab was designed to detect oppositely-charged pairs of muons (dimuons) produced by interactions between a 120 GeV proton beam and liquid hydrogen, liquid deuterium and solid nuclear targets. The primary physics program uses the Drell-Yan process to probe antiquark distributions in the target nucleon. The spectrometer consists of a target system, two dipole magnets and four detector stations. The upstream magnet is a closed-aperture solid iron magnet which also serves as the beam dump, while the second magnet is an open aperture magnet. Each of the detector stations consists of scintillator hodoscopes and a high-resolution tracking device. The FPGA-based trigger compares the hodoscope signals to a set of pre-programmed roads to determine if the event contains oppositely-signed, high-mass muon pairs.

Abstract

We report on the effects of ionizing radiation on 65nm CMOS transistors held at approximately -20C during irradiation. The pattern of damage observed after a total dose of 1 Grad is similar to damage reported in room temperature exposures, but we observe less damage than was observed at room temperature.

Abstract

We report the results of a high-statistics, sensitive search for narrow baryon resonances decaying to $\Xi^-\pi^-$, $\Xi^-\pi^+$, $\bar{\Xi}^+\pi^-$, and $\bar{\Xi}^+\pi^+$. The only resonances observed are the well known $\Xi^0(1530)$ and $\bar{\Xi^0}(1530)$. No evidence is found for a state near 1862 MeV, previously reported by NA49\cite{NA49}. At the 95% confidence level, we find the upper limit for the production of a Gaussian enhancement with $\sigma=7.6$ MeV in the $\Xi^-\pi^-$ effective mass spectrum to be 0.3% of the number of observed $\Xi^0(1530)\to\Xi^-\pi^+$. We find similarly restrictive upper limits for an enhancement at 1862 MeV in the $\Xi^-\pi^+$, $\bar{\Xi}^+\pi^-$, and $\bar{\Xi}^+\pi^+$ mass spectra., Comment: Submitted to PRL

Abstract

We report on measurements performed on silicon pixel sensor prototypes exposed to a 200 MeV proton beam at the Indiana University Cyclotron Facility. The sensors are of n+/n/p+ type with multi-guard ring structures on the p+-side and p-stop electrode isolation on the n+-side. Electrical characterization of the devices was performed before and after irradiation up to a proton fluence of 4E14 p/cm2. We tested pixel sensors fabricated from normal and oxygen-enriched silicon wafers and with two different p-stop isolation layouts: common p-stop and individual p-stop., Comment: 8 pages in postscript format. Abstract

In future experiments the readout electronics for pixel detectors is required to be resistant to a very high radiation level. In this paper we report on irradiation tests performed on several preFPIX2 prototype pixel readout chips for the BTeV experiment exposed to a 200 MeV proton beam. The prototype chips have been implemented in commercial 0.25 um CMOS processes following radiation tolerant design rules. The results show that this ASIC design tolerates a large total radiation dose, and that radiation induced Single Event Effects occur at a manageable level., Comment: 15 pages, 6 Postscript figures

Abstract

The silicon pixel vertex detector is a key element of the BTeV spectrometer. Sensors bump-bonded to prototype front-end devices were tested in a high energy pion beam at Fermilab. The spatial resolution and occupancies as a function of the pion incident angle were measured for various sensor-readout combinations. Abstract

It is an experimental evidence that all baryons are created polarized from unpolarized p—nucleus collisions. So far, the origin of this polarization remains unexplained in spite of the experimental evidences accumulated in the past thirty years. Up to these days, Λ0 is the most studied baryon for polarization, for it is copiously produced in p—nucleus collisions at the energies of the principal high energy physics accelerators of the world. This paper is an overview of the experimental evidences accumulated on the polarization of Λ0 from unpolarized exclusive pp collisions as function of xF, PT, and M(Λ0K+) in the past fifteen years inside Fermilab e690 experiment, in the particular reactions pp→pΛ0K0π+, pp→ppΛ0Λ-0, pp→pΛ0K+, produced at 800 GeV. We report the results of the search for the pentaquark candidates Θ(1540) and [cap_xi](1862) using data from Fermilab experiment E690 in the reaction pp → pX at 800 GeV/c. We find no evidence for narrow baryon resonances near 1862 MeV decaying to [cap_xi]π. Abstract

We present preliminary results of the analysis of the centrally produced φφ system at 800 GeV/c in the reaction pp → Pslow (φφ)Pfast. A partial wave analysis of the data up to 2.6 GeV/c² shows that three waves with JPC LS = 2++02 and with different Jz and reflectivity are needed to describe the data. A fit to the wave amplitudes using Jost functions gives two resonances, one above and one below the φφ threshold. The resonance above threshold has a Breit­Wigner structure with MR = 2.243 ± 0.015(stat) ± 0.010(syst) GeV and ΓR = 0.368 ± 0.033(stat) ± 0.030(syst) GeV. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
