The Planck design and scanning strategy provide many levels of redundancy that can be exploited to provide tests of internal consistency. One of the most important is the comparison of the 70GHz and 100GHz channels. Based on different instrument technologies, with feeds located differently in the focal plane, analysed independently by different teams using different software, and near the minimum of diffuse foreground emission, these channels are in effect two different experiments. The 143GHz channel has the lowest noise level on Planck, and is near the minimum of unresolved foreground emission. In this paper, we analyse the level of consistency achieved in the 2013 Planck data. We concentrate on comparisons between the 70/100/143GHz channel maps and power spectra, particularly over the angular scales of the first and second acoustic peaks, on maps masked for diffuse Galactic emission and for strong unresolved sources. Difference maps covering angular scales from 8deg-15arcmin are consistent with noise, and show no evidence of cosmic microwave background structure. Including small but important corrections for unresolved-source residuals, we demonstrate agreement between 70 and 100GHz power spectra averaged over 70

We describe the design and performance of the digital servo and motion control system for the 6-meter diameter parabolic antennas of the Submillimeter Array (SMA) on Mauna Kea, Hawaii. The system is divided into three nested layers operating at a different, appropriate bandwidth. (1) A rack-mounted, real-time Unix system runs the position loop which reads the high resolution azimuth and elevation encoders and sends velocity and acceleration commands at 100 Hz to a custom-designed servo control board (SCB). (2) The microcontroller-based SCB reads the motor axis tachometers and implements the velocity loop by sending torque commands to the motor amplifiers at 558 Hz. (3) The motor amplifiers implement the torque loop by monitoring and sending current to the three-phase brushless drive motors at 20 kHz. The velocity loop uses a traditional proportional-integral-derivative (PID) control algorithm, while the position loop uses only a proportional term and implements a command shaper based on the Gauss error function. Calibration factors and software filters are applied to the tachometer feedback prior to the application of the servo gains in the torque computations. All of these parameters are remotely adjustable in software. The three layers of the control system monitor each other and are capable of shutting down the system safely if a failure or anomaly occurs. The Unix system continuously relays antenna status to the central observatory computer via reflective memory. In each antenna, a Palm Vx hand controller displays system status and allows full local control of the drives in an intuitive touchscreen user interface. It can also be connected outside the cabin for convenience during antenna reconfigurations. Excellent tracking performance (0.3 arcsec rms) is achieved with this system. We study disorder-induced magnetism within the Gutzwiller approximation applied to the t-J model relevant for cuprate superconductors. In particular, we show how disorder generates magnetic phases by inducing local droplets of antiferromagnetic order which eventually merge, and form a quasi-long range ordered state in the underdoped regime. We identify two distinct disorder-induced magnetic phases of this type depending on the strength of the scatterers. For weak potential scatterers used to model dopant disorder, charge reorganization may push local regions in-between the impurities across the magnetic phase boundary, whereas for strong scatterers used to model substitutional ions, a local static magnetic moment is formed around each impurity. We calculate the density of states and find a remarkably universal low-energy behavior largely independent of both disorder and magnetization. However, the magnetic regions are characterized by larger (reduced) superconducting gap (coherence peaks) and a sub-gap kink in the density of states., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures

Discovered in 1995 at the Caltech Submillimeter Observatory (CSO), the vibrationally-excited water maser line at 658 GHz (455 micron) is seen in oxygen-rich giant and supergiant stars. Because this maser can be so strong (up to thousands of Janskys), it was very helpful during the commissioning phase of the highest frequency band (620-700 GHz) of the Submillimeter Array (SMA) interferometer. From late 2002 to early 2006, brief attempts were made to search for emission from additional sources beyond the original CSO survey. These efforts have expanded the source count from 10 to 16. The maser emission appears to be quite compact spatially, as expected from theoretical considerations; thus these objects can potentially be used as atmospheric phase calibrators. Many of these objects also exhibit maser emission in the vibrationally-excited SiO maser at 215 GHz. Because both maser lines likely originate from a similar physical region, these objects can be used to test techniques of phase transfer calibration between millimeter and submillimeter bands. Phase closure at 682 GHz and 691 GHz was first achieved using three antennas of the Submillimeter Array (SMA) interferometer located on Mauna Kea, Hawaii. Initially, phase closure was demonstrated at 682.5 GHz on Sept. 19, 2002 using an artificial ground-based "beacon" signal. Subsequently, astronomical detections of both Saturn and Uranus were made at the frequency of the CO(6-5) transition (691.473 GHz) on all three baselines on Sept. 22, 2002. While the larger planets such as Saturn are heavily resolved even on these short baselines (25.2m, 25.2m and 16.4m), phase closure was achieved on Uranus and Callisto. This was the first successful experiment to obtain phase closure in this frequency band. The CO(6-5) line was also detected towards Orion BN/KL and other Galactic sources, as was the vibrationally-excited 658 GHz water maser line toward evolved stars. Atmospheric water vapor causes significant undesired phase fluctuations for the Submillimeter Array (SMA) interferometer, particularly in its highest frequency observing band of 690 GHz. One proposed solution to this atmospheric effect is to observe simultaneously at two separate frequency bands of 230 and 690 GHz. Although the phase fluctuations have a smaller magnitude at the lower frequency, they can be measured more accurately and on shorter timescales due to the greater sensitivity of the array to celestial point source calibrators at this frequency. In theory, we can measure the atmospheric phase fluctuations in the 230 GHz band, scale them appropriately with frequency, and apply them to the data in 690 band during the post-observation calibration process. The ultimate limit to this atmospheric phase calibration scheme will be set by the instrumental phase stability of the IF and LO systems. Efficient operation of a submillimeter interferometer requires remote (preferably automated) control of mechanically tuned local oscillators, phase-lock loops, mixers, optics, calibration vanes and cryostats. The present control system for these aspects of the Submillimeter Array (SMA) will be described. Distributed processing forms the underlying architecture and the software is split between hardware platforms in a leader/follower arrangement. In each antenna cabin, a serial network of up to ten independent 80C196 microcontroller boards attaches to the real-time PowerPC computer (running LynxOS). A multi-threaded, gcc-compiled leader program on the PowerPC accepts top-level requests via remote procedure calls (RPC), subsequently dispatches tuning commands to the relevant follower microcontrollers, and regularly reports the system status to optical-fiber-based reflective memory for common access by the telescope monitor and error reporting system. All serial communication occurs asynchronously via encoded, variable-length packets. The microcontrollers respond to the requested commands and queries by accessing non-volatile, rewriteable lookup-tables (when appropriate) and executing embedded software that operates additional electronic devices (DACs, ADCs, etc.). Since various receiver hardware components require linear or rotary motion, each microcontroller also implements a position servo via a one-millisecond interrupt service routine which drives a DC-motor/encoder combination that remains standard across each subsystem., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures, 19 references, from a talk presented at the SPIE Conference on Advanced Telescope and Instrumentation Control Software II, 27-28 August 2002 in Waikoloa, HI.
