The lymphocyte cell counts of splenectomized subjects were analyzed during maximal exercise to characterize the role of the spleen in lymphocytosis and elevated natural killer (NK) cell activity. Splenectomized subjects exhibited impaired elevations in NK cells and T lymphocytes during exercise compared to non-splenoctomized subjects. Furthermore, lowered increase of NK cells during exercise in splenectomized subjects was not related to the activation of the sympathetic nervous system.
