Abstract

Three field studies and a laboratory experiment reveal racial discrimination in financial loan services. The results show that (1) service employees provide Black (vs. White) customers with inferior service outcomes (i.e., products offered), (2) Black (vs. White) customers experience inferior service processes (employees' warmth/competence), and (3) Black (vs. White) customers report lower loyalty intentions toward the firm. Such discrimination is not only morally wrong and illegal; it is also bad for business. Therefore, the authors also show when and why racial discrimination is mitigated: namely, when Black customers signal higher socioeconomic status, or a Black customer's company (for which they seek the loan) has a more complex and sophisticated legal structure (corporation vs. sole proprietorship). Exploring this mitigation effect further, the authors show that a more sophisticated business structure increases the employee's trust toward Black customers, which reduces the perceived default likelihood and increases the likelihood to offer a loan; yet, this process does not emerge for White applicants. Abstract

Commercial timber harvest sites in Alaska were studied between 2016 and 2019 to estimate growing-stock removals, characterize current tree utilization, characterize logging operations, and assist with estimating the amount of woody biomass left onsite after harvesting. Sample logging sites were selected within major geographic regions in proportion to 5-year timber harvest volumes. A two-stage sampling method (felled trees clustered within logging sites) was used to compute state-level utilization factors. Results indicated that for every 1,000 ft³ delivered to the mill, harvesting removed 1,091 ft³ of timber volume from growing stock; created 92 ft³ of growing-stock logging residue; and yielded 2 ft³ of non-growing-stock material that was delivered to the mill. The ratio of Alaska growing-stock residue to mill-delivered volume was three times larger than in other Northwest states. Study results can inform land managers of residues available for biomass/bioenergy uses, provide data for life-cycle analyses, and estimate removals from growing stock associated with commercial timber harvesting. Abstract

While small businesses represent a significant portion of the economy, there is mounting evidence that the playing field is not level for these firms in access to capital. Based on 10 years of matched-paired mystery shopping tests in banks to investigate bank lending practices and customer experience, the results demonstrate that in almost every instance, minorities were treated more poorly than their White counterparts. However, the authors acknowledge the controversy surrounding this issue, as some question the need for government action to push banks in this direction. Before offering evidence of the impact race can have on the treatment of small business owners who apply for loans, they present two frameworks which support the adoption of race-based criteria in evaluating bank performance, namely, Corporate Social Responsibility and Corporate Social Innovation. They then provide a summary of the results of mystery shopping studies they have conducted, concluding that banks are leaving profits on the table through their discriminatory practices.
