This paper presents the results of full-scale fire tests on two concrete columns strengthened with fibre reinforced polymer sheets and protected with a new insulation system. One column was circular while the other was square. The columns were subjected to the ULC-S101 standard fire. Both columns obtained fire endurance ratings of over 4 hours. At the end of the fire test, the columns were loaded to failure. The temperatures in the columns during the fire test and the load capacities of the columns will be presented. Fire resistance of buildings is extremely important as evidenced by recent dramatic collapses of buildings in fire, such as occurred in the World Trade Center disaster, or in the Windsor Tower fire, in Madrid, in 2005. Although these examples highlight the extreme situation for fire in buildings, they serve to demonstrate the need to consider fire in structural design. Thus, when fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) materials are applied to strengthen concrete members in buildings, an understanding of the performance of the strengthened members in fire is paramount. In some situations, designers may be reluctant to apply FRP materials in buildings because of concerns relating to the loss of strength of FRPs at high temperature. Fibre-reinforced polymers (FRPs) have shown good performance in retrofitting and repairing deteriorated reinforced concrete structures, according to research and field applications. Due to a lack of information on the fire performance of these systems, an experimental and analytical study is being conducted on the fire behaviour of FRP-strengthened square reinforced concrete columns. The ultimate goal of the study is to provide design recommendations and guidelines for these structural members. This paper presents the explicit finite difference procedure used in developing a coupled heat transfer and structural analysis behaviour in numerical fire models. This paper presents the preliminary results of an experimental investigation to characterize the mechanical properties of unidirectional carbon/epoxy fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) materials under various loading and thermal regimes, ranging from ambient temperature up to 600°C. Tensile, lap splice bond, and FRP-to-concrete bond tests were conducted under both steady state and transient thermal and loading regimes. Though fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) composites hold great promise for structural reinforcement, there is little knowledge about their behaviour at high temperature. This study tested the mechanical properties of FRP composites, as well as concrete and steel, at elevated temperatures. It assessed the mass loss with temperature, thermal conductivity, specific heat, and glass transition temperature of several types of FRP composites. It determined the stress-strain behaviour of FRP composites, steel and concrete, and FRP-to-FRP and FRP-to-concrete bond strength. It also involved thermal analyses on carbon/epoxy FRP composites, and three types of insulation materials (intumescent, gypsum, and cementitious). Research was performed on concrete slabs and beam-slab assemblies reinforced with fibre-reinforced polymers (FRPs) to better understand their performance in building fires. The experiments consisted of fire tests on intermediate-scale reinforced concrete slabs and full-scale reinforced concrete beam-slab assemblies that were strengthened with externally bonded FRP materials, and provided with supplemental fire protection systems applied to the exterior of the FRPs. The report describes the test procedures and results from these fire endurance experiments.

Increased use of fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) materials for strengthening of concrete structures has raised concerns regarding the behavior of such FRP systems in fire. Limited information is currently available on the fire endurance of FRP-strengthened concrete systems. This paper presents results from full-scae fire resistance experiments on two square reinforced concrete (RC) columns. A comparison is made between the fire performance of a conventional RC column and that of an FRP-strengthened and insulated RC column. Data obtained during the experiments show that the fire behavior of FRP-wrapped and insulated square concrete columns, protected using an appropriate fire protection system, is as good as that of unstrengthened RC columns Factors that significantly influence the fire resistance of FRP-reinforced concrete columns are discussed. Three full-scale fire resistance tests were conducted at the National Research Council of Canada (NRC) in partnership with ISIS Canada and Fyfe Co. LLC, to investigate the behaviour of fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) wrapped (confined) reinforced concrete columns under exposure to the standard fire. Both columns were provided with a unique supplemental fire protection system. The results of fire endurance experiments on the three full-scale columns are described in this report. These tests were conducted as part of a collaborative research program, aimed at studying fire endurance of FRP-wrapped reinforced concrete columns. The test results suggest that, by providing proper fire insulation as described in this report, a 4-hour fire endurance rating can be achieved for loaded reinforced concrete columns strengthened with FRPwraps.
