Header Two-dimensional (2D) Transition Metal Dichalcogenide semiconductors (TMDs) are a promising platform in view of developing a novel generation of optoelectronics devices and renewable photon to energy conversion technologies. However new ultra-compact photon harvesting schemes are urgently required to mitigate their poor photon absorption properties. In this work we propose a novel flat-optic solution where a few layers MoS2 film is conformally deposited on a large area (cm2) nanogrooved template. The subwavelength reshaping of the TMDs film induces the excitation of photonic Rayleigh Anomalies (RA). The latter promote a strong in-plane electromagnetic confinement and can be easily tuned over a broadband spectrum by tailoring the illumination conditions. As a demonstration of the potential of this large-area surface functionalization we employed the hybrid 2D nanopatterns as a photocatalyst in a prototype photobleaching reaction of Methylene Blue (MB) molecules. We demonstrate a strong enhancement of the photochemical MB degradation, well above a factor 2, by effectively tuning the RA mode in resonance to the molecular absorption band. Therefore, these findings pave the way to flat-optics photon harvesting schemes for boosting photoconversion efficiency in large-scale hybrid 2D-TMD/polymer layers, with a strong impact in applications ranging from waste-water remediation to new-generation photonics and renewable energy storage

The urgent environmental and energy challenges require novel solutions for efficient light harvesting and conversion in new-generation ultra-thin devices. Plasmonic nanoantennas and flat optics nanogratings can promote light matter interaction at the nanoscale being very attractive for ultra-thin photonics and sensing applications. In this work we developed two light trapping solutions based on large-scale nanomaterials. The first system is a large-scale (cm2) plasmonic metasurface based on self-organized gold nanostripes. The second is based on the periodic re-shaping of ultra-thin semiconducting MoS2 layers forming large-area flat-optics nanogratings. Under this condition Rayleigh Anomalies can be resonantly excited thus promoting in-plane light confinement and photon absorption into the few-layers material. To demonstrate the impact of these nanopatterned systems in photon harvesting we probed their efficiency into a prototypal photochemical reaction: the photo-bleaching of Methylene Blue (MB). We demonstrate the resonant enhancement of the photo-bleaching of these polluting dye molecules promoted either by the localized plasmon resonance in Au nanostripes or by the Rayleigh Anomaly in flat-optics MoS2 nanogratings. We investigate this effect through a quantitative analysis of the solution photodissociation induced by a monochromatic light. These results show the strong potential of flat-optics templates for light-harvesting and energy conversion in ultra-thin photonic devices.

Thin-film organic photovoltaic (OPV) devices represent an attractive alternative to conventional silicon solar cells due to their lightweight, flexibility, and low cost. However, the relatively low optical absorption of the OPV active layers still represents an open issue in view of efficient devices that cannot be addressed by adopting conventional light coupling strategies derived from thick PV absorbers. The light coupling to thin-film solar cells can be boosted by nanostructuring the device interfaces at the subwavelength scale. Here, we demonstrate broadband and omnidirectional photon harvesting in thin-film OPV devices enabled by highly ordered one-dimensional (1D) arrays of nanogrooves. Laser interference lithography, in combination with reactive ion etching (RIE), provides the controlled tailoring of the height and periodicity of the silica grooves, enabling effective tuning of the anti-reflection properties in the active organic layer (PTB7:PCBM). With this strategy, we demonstrate a strong enhancement of the optical absorption, as high as 19% with respect to a flat device, over a broadband visible and near-infrared spectrum. The OPV device supported on these optimized nanogrooved substrates yields a 14% increase in short-circuit current over the corresponding flat device, highlighting the potential of this large-scale light-harvesting strategy in the broader context of thin-film technologies. To achieve advanced functionalities in nanostructured MoSe2 for enhanced electrochemical charge storage and improved photosensing, here we propose an effective strategy, i.e., the substitutional doping of the heteroatom Mn. We achieve a 313% increase in specific capacitance for 6.2% of Mn doping compared to pristine MoSe2 at the scan rate of 5 mV/s in a three-electrode configuration. For a two-electrode arrangement, also superior charge-storage performance is noted. The enhanced electrode performance can be attributed to the increase of electrical conductivity arising due to an increase of electron density for the n-type nature of Mn doping realized via an X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy study and density functional theory calculation. The latter one also unveils that Mn doping introduces catalytically active sites by disrupting homogeneous charge distribution over the topology of the MoSe2 basal plane contributing to better charge-storage performance. Mn doping-induced shift in the Fermi level of MoSe2 toward the conduction band also minimizes the contact barrier height signifying its improved capabilities for a photosensor device. Additionally, Mn doping causes alleviation of the charge-recombination process resulting in increase of photocarrier separation. As a result, we observe a 187% enhancement in the photocurrent and significantly higher responsivity and detectivity for 6.2% Mn-doped MoSe2 than its pristine counterpart. Our proposed doping strategy to modulate charge storage as well as photoresponse properties demonstrates high potential for MoSe2 along with other two-dimensional transition-metal dichalcogenides in developing next-generation energy-storage and optoelectronic devices. The Lodhas are an indigenous community living in the rural areas of West Midnapore and Jhargram district of West Bengal. My research investigation is an endeavor to present a grand narrative of Lodha life over a period of hundred and ten years, taking the Lodhas to be the subject of a historical situation and placing them on a timescale. This investigation is an attempt to present a reconstruction of the past of the Lodhas from traces persisting into the present, on the way of projecting a coherent historical narrative of the community. One of the basic objectives therefore is to raise their standard of living at par with the national average. In recent years, these communities have further been exposed to globalization through national commitment to the process. The schemes are concomitant to the development policies adopted by the government from time to time. Major focus of the research will be on the present socioeconomic condition of the Lodhas in West Medinipur and Jhargram district of West Bengal in the parameter of development. Nanoscale pattern formation on Ge (001) surface by 500 eV Ar+ bombardment has been studied for a wide range of ion incidence angles at a temperature of 300° C. In the angular regime 0° to 65°, a fourfold symmetric topography forms which shows a remarkable transition into highly regular one-dimensional asymmetric pattern at grazing incidences, known as perpendicular mode ripples. The four-fold symmetric patterns are found to retain their symmetry under the concurrent substrate rotation during sputtering, while the ripples show degeneration into hole structure with a weak fourfold symmetric pattern. The dynamics of the observed patterns has also been investigated in a wide range of ion fluence from 1 × 1017 to 1 × 10 20 ions cm−2. The square topographies are found to be determined by Ehrlich–Schwoebel barrier induced diffusion bias driven growth process, whereas, the ripple formation implies the role of incidence ion beam direction. Two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) semiconductor layers are particularly attractive for photoconversion applications but new ultra-compact photon harvesting schemes are urgently required to mitigate their poor photon absorption properties. Here, we propose a flat-optics scheme based on nanogrooved ultra-thin MoS 2 layers conformally grown onto large area (cm 2 scale) nanopatterned templates. The subwavelength re-shaping of the 2D-TMD layers promotes the excitation of photonic Rayleigh anomaly (RA) modes, uniquely boosting a strong in-plane electromagnetic confinement. By tailoring the illumination conditions, we demonstrate effective tuning of the photonic anomalies over a broadband visible spectrum across the absorption band of relevant polluting dye molecules. Thanks to the strong photonic in-plane confinement, we achieve a resonant enhancement of the photodissociation rate of methylene blue (MB) molecules, well above a factor of 2. These results highlight the potential of flat-optics photon harvesting schemes for boosting photoconversion efficiency in large-scale hybrid 2D-TMD/polymer layers, with a strong impact in various applications ranging from new-generation photonics to waste water remediation and renewable energy storage.
