Background: Nonlinear Pedagogy, underpinned by concepts in ecological dynamics, is a pedagogical framework that advocates an exploratory approach to acquisition of movement skills with an emphasis on individualised movement solutions. Its key principles have been successfully implemented in sports teaching and coaching and are currently being applied to learning designs in PE programmes. Purposes: The purposes of the paper are to provide an overview of the theoretical underpinnings and practical implications of Nonlinear Pedagogy (NLP) for Physical Education (PE). To exemplify applications of key concepts, we discuss how NLP is being implemented as a methodological framework for learning design in PE programmes of Singapore schools. For simplicity, our analysis focuses on the 'What', 'Why' and 'How' of NLP to illustrate its application in Singapore PE programmes. Discussion: Understanding the 'What' and 'Why' of NLP can provide a sound foundation to understand how this pedagogical framework can be applied in formalised school PE settings. While it is important for teachers to know what NLP is, the 'Why' of NLP, referencing its effectiveness as a pedagogical approach, can provide a rationale for its adoption to enhance teaching and learning. The 'How' of NLP's practical implementation in Singapore schools is of primary interest for teachers, managers, administrators and policy makers in education. Conclusion: The article discusses key pedagogical principles from NLP, which can provide a platform for teachers to design effective lessons and practices to enhance learning in PE programmes. An important practical implication of the current paper is to provide educators with guidance and training for incorporating pedagogical principles of NLP in lessons and learning programmes to enhance 'nonlinearization' of some current practices.

The purpose of the present study was to examine and compare Singaporean physical education teachers' attitudes towards information and communication technologies in physical education across different demographic groups that included gender, age, teaching experience, and school level. A total of 422 Singaporean full-time physical education teachers (mean age = 38.47 years, standard deviation = 8.31) completed the Physical Education Teachers' Subjective Theories Questionnaire to assess their perspectives towards the integration of information and communication technologies into physical education teaching practice. Mann-Whitney "U" and Kruskal-Wallis "H" tests were conducted to examine the differences in participants' attitudes across different demographic groups. Results revealed that attitudes towards information and communication technologies significantly differed between teachers of different gender, age, and teaching experience. However, no significant difference was found in attitudes towards information and communication technologies among teachers of different school levels. The findings of this study can inform policy-makers and stakeholders with an interest in promoting the integration of information and communication technologies in physical education.

Background: Street football can be understood as the most natural way to learn football and it can be a great starting point to develop perceptual, decisional, tactical and motor skills. Importantly, players involved in Street football may develop a strong emotional bond to the game through their experiences playing in an informal setting and eventually this could support their participation in a more structured playing environment. However, nowadays, talented children have reduced opportunities to play the game in this informal environment and instead, are mostly experiencing the game through their participation in organised settings such as in youth football clubs and academies. Importantly, such structured and formal environments afford the children a more rigid and less representative learning environment, which could potentially inhibit the development of creativity and adaptability among these young players. Purpose: The current paper aims to discuss the importance of Street football to players' development and the role of a Nonlinear Pedagogy (NLP) framework to support the design of a player-centred and game-based approach that can contribute to enhance learning of creative and adaptive behaviours in football. Discussion: Pedagogical principles of NLP (representative learning design, information-movement couplings, manipulation of constraints, exploratory learning and reducing conscious control of movement) underpinned by concepts from Ecological Dynamics and working through pedagogical channels (instruction, feedback and practice) can facilitate the design of representative training tasks to enhance learning. NLP emphasises a learner-centred approach and highlights the critical role that the practitioner plays as a facilitator in providing learners with meaningful practice that leads to effective transfer of game-play behaviours. Street football affords features that capture some of the above key pedagogical principles and presents a suitable platform to support the acquisition of game-play behaviour that is meaningful for the individual learner. Conclusions: Through a recognition of the current need to design a football learning environments that capture key elements of Street football, we highlight the relevance of NLP as a pedagogical framework to underpin a learner-centred and game-based approach, supporting practitioners with a set of pedagogical principles. Thus, we propose that through this representative learning environment we can enhance learning in football and contribute to the development of intelligent and creative players.

Purpose: Badminton is a sport characterized by high-intensity activity interspersed with short rests requiring specific physiological fitness, skills and game tactics. This study aimed to develop, describe and establish the reliability of a novel badminton intermittent exercise protocol, to simulate singles match-play (Part A) and assess match-fitness (Part B). Method: Twelve well-trained male badminton players performed a two-part protocol, mimicking the demands and activity of match-play, on two occasions with at least 72-h recovery. Part A imitated match-play and consisted of 40 stages alternating between 20 s work -- receiving shuttlecocks from a launcher and ghosting (simulated) actions -- and 40 s rest. Part B was an open-ended period, challenging match-fitness, designed to exhaust participants within 10 min. Physiological responses (heart rate, blood lactate and ratings of perceived exertion) (Part A and B) and time to exhaustion (Part B) were determined both times. Results: There were no differences in performance and physiological responses between trials (p > 0.05). The protocol demonstrated excellent reliability (intraclass correlation coefficient > 0.89) for all variables. Time to exhaustion (Part B) was 198 ± 98 s and 194 ± 82 s, respectively. Mean (Part A) and peak (Part B) heart rates were 166 ± 9; 191 ± 8 b·min[superscript -1] and 166 ± 9; 191 ± 7 b·min[superscript -1] and blood lactate concentrations (Part B) 11.8 ± 2.3 and 11.5 ± 2.1 mmol·l[superscript -1] for trials 1 and 2, respectively. Conclusion: The protocol reliably induces match-like responses and can be used to assess match-fitness for training/research purposes.

We develop a cognitive modeling approach, motivated by classic theories of knowledge representation and judgment from psychology, for combining people's rankings of items. The model makes simple assumptions about how individual differences in knowledge lead to observed ranking data in behavioral tasks. We implement the cognitive model as a Bayesian graphical model, and use computational sampling to infer an aggregate ranking and measures of the individual expertise. Applications of the model to 23 data sets, dealing with general knowledge and prediction tasks, show that the model performs well in producing an aggregate ranking that is often close to the ground truth and, as in the "wisdom of the crowd" effect, usually performs better than most of individuals. We also present some evidence that the model outperforms the traditional statistical Borda count method, and that the model is able to infer people's relative expertise surprisingly well without knowing the ground truth. We discuss the advantages of the cognitive modeling approach to combining ranking data, and in wisdom of the crowd research generally, as well as highlighting a number of potential directions for future model development.

Purpose: The present study investigates to what extend de-contextualized practice is necessary to acquire technical skills in developmental soccer training. Typically, open play is considered beneficial for acquiring tactical skills, whereas specific drills are used to support the development of technical skills like passing and shooting. Therefore, a field-based study was designed to investigate the effectiveness of a Nonlinear Pedagogy (NP) approach in contrast to a classical Deliberate Practice approach to improve passing performance in young developmental soccer players. Method: Forty young male players (age 10 ± 1 years) were randomly assigned to three groups (PLAY, PRACTICE, and CONTROL). The PRACTICE group performed classical passing drills, whereas the PLAY group underwent a NP training regime. Passing skill was assessed before and after a 5-week training program using a standardized passing test according to the German Football Association. Additional retention testing was performed 5 weeks later. Results: The results indicated that, although the test design showed no specificity to the learning environment of the PLAY group, both groups improved passing skills after training, but the PLAY group displayed better results during retention testing (PRACTICE: p = 0.004, d = 0.48; PLAY: p = 0.001, d = 0.53) compared to the PRACTICE group. These findings are suggestive of general transfer learning in dynamic learning environments. Conclusion: The findings indicate that even when there is an emphasis on "technical skill" enhancement, more effective improvement in young development players may be observed through dynamic learning environments. Nonlinear Pedagogy is an exploratory approach to teaching and learning Physical Education that can be potentially effective to help children acquire relevant twenty-first century competencies. Underpinned by Ecological Dynamics, the focus of Nonlinear Pedagogy is on the learner and includes the provision of less prescriptive instructions and guided discovery which serve to develop greater autonomy, competency, and relatedness in the learning process. This paper describes a study that examines the factors that contributed to motivation, enjoyment, and the development of twenty-first century competencies in Primary School Children. One hundred and thirty-three children were taught over seven weeks to play a modified-tennis game either with a Nonlinear Pedagogy or a Linear Pedagogy (i.e., more teacher-centred) approach in a Singapore school. While findings from the intrinsic motivation inventory (IMI) questionnaire showed that there was no difference for the subscales measured, student and teacher interviews indicated that the Nonlinear Pedagogy approach created a learning environment that facilitated perceived competence, autonomy, and relatedness, thus potentially enhancing intrinsic motivation and enjoyment during practice. Nonlinear Pedagogy encourages teachers to create representative learning designs through the inclusion of a variety of modified games, the freedom to choose, an emphasis on exploration and problem-solving, and can be relevant to develop twenty-first century competencies.

Purpose: Nonlinear Pedagogy (NLP) proposes that skill development is a nonlinear process, advocating the integration of variability into practice to facilitate individualized movement patterns. However, the influence of a NLP for skills that emphasize a specific movement form is relatively unknown. This study aimed to investigate the impact of a NLP approach when learning a movement form based skill. Method: Sixteen beginners in the power clean (PC), were randomly assigned into a linear pedagogy (LP) condition receiving instructions that prescribed explicit movement form, and a NLP condition presented with analogy-based instructions and two task constraints. Both conditions completed seven lessons across 4-weeks. Results: There were no significant differences in the quantity of exploration, with both conditions demonstrating a similar range of movement patterns. These findings were coupled with a significant improvement in performance accuracy (reduced forward movement of the barbell; F × D) for both conditions. No significant differences were detected in the distribution of barbell trajectory types, with type one, three and four trajectories being exhibited to a similar degree in both conditions. Conclusion: Findings from this study suggests both NLP and LP pedagogies can successfully develop movement form based skills. Overall, both NLP and LP approaches appear to positively influence skill development. These findings have important implications for practitioners suggesting that deviations from instructed technique in learners (i.e., LP approach) do not negatively impact performance. However, further research is needed to determine whether these approaches can more effectively facilitate learners' search for movement solutions that "fit" their individual abilities. Advances in technology have created new opportunities for enhanced delivery of teaching to improve the acquisition of game skills in physical education (PE). The availability of a motion-tracking system (i.e. the A-Eye), which determines positional information of students in a practice context, might offer a suitable technology to support pedagogical approaches in the teaching of movement skills in game situations. This paper explores the possibility and potential of using this technology to augment pedagogical practices in PE. Using examples from its implementation in sports science investigations and pilot work in a Singapore school, we discuss how such motion-tracking systems can be incorporated in schools, assisting practitioners in refining pedagogical practices. The implications of its wider use in a PE context will also be discussed.

This paper describes several practical activities that reveal how complex and nonlinear pedagogies might underpin primary physical education and school sport lessons. These sample activities, involving track and field, tennis and netball components, are designed to incorporate states of stability and instability through the modification of task and environmental constraints that challenge students to learn about movement. These activities challenge students individually and collectively to learn in relation to the cognitive, social, emotional and physical domains. Within these conditions, students are expected to "self-organise" in order to take responsibility for their learning; this approach links with recent calls for a more expansive version of physical education supporting the holistic and lifelong development of physically active individuals. We further suggest that teachers using constraints-led pedagogies require high levels of capacity as they must draw upon their judgement, knowledge and teaching skills to appropriately facilitate and "scale" dynamic learning contexts.

There is increasing support to describe and examine the teaching of game skills in physical education from a complex and nonlinear perspective. The emergence of game behaviours as a consequence of the dynamic interactions of the learner, the game environment and the task constraints within the game context highlights the nonlinear and complex nature of how learning of game skills can occur. While there is increasing recognition that teaching and learning should be seen from a complex and nonlinear perspective, the challenge is to provide teachers with ideas on how to deliver lessons and activities that are underpinned by specific pedagogical practices from this perspective and in alignment with emerging curricular guidelines. In this paper, key features of complex and nonlinear pedagogy are discussed and exemplified through a Singaporean PE context. Practical implications are shared on how lessons/activities (soccer) based on aspects of complex and nonlinear pedagogy can be delivered in the school.

In adults, longer quiet-eye (QE) durations have been associated with more successful sport performances and less deterioration in skill during anxiety-inducing situations. This study aimed to establish if QE patterns in youth are similar to those reported in adults. Ten youth shooters, age 13.13 ± 0.83 years, completed an air-pistol task under a control and an anxiety condition. Mixed-design 2 (performance outcome) × 2 (condition) ANOVA tests were conducted with two performance measures-objective and coach rated. No significant main or interaction effects were found. Unlike in adults, performance and anxiety did not differentiate QE duration in youth athletes, although QE duration was longer during good shots than poor shots across both performance measures, and the shortest durations were recorded during poor shots in the anxiety condition. This preliminary exploration encourages more research with youth athletes to determine the efficacy of QE patterns across different learners. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
