13. Simulation of Silicon Nitride Based Arrayed Waveguide Gratings Applying Three Different Photonics Tools.

Abstract

We present simulation of 8-channel, 100-GHz silicon nitride based AWGs using three different commercial photonics tools, namely PHASAR from Optiwave Systems Inc., APSS from Apollo Photonics Inc. and RSoft from Synopsys Inc. For this purpose we created identical waveguide structures and identical AWG layouts in these tools and performed BPM simulations. For the simulations the same calculation conditions were used. These AWGs were designed for TM-polarized light with an AWG central wavelength of 850 nm. The output of simulations, the transmission characteristics, were used to calculate the transmission parameters defining optical properties of simulated AWGs. The achieved simulated results from all three photonics tools were analyzed and compared with each other. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

We report design and investigation of PECVD SiO2:N/SiO2 slab waveguide grating with a width modulation for sensing application at 1550 nm spectral range. The fundamental parameters of reflected spectrum by grating is simulated and investigated as a function of temperature, cover refractive index and strain. The apodization of designed slab waveguide grating is possible to be realized in one technological step.

Abstract

Photonics is one of the most important technologies of the 21st century. It is the fundament of today's optical communications, all-optical signal processing, biomedical diagnostics, optical sensing, display systems and energy efficient smart lighting. Photonic sensors as a basic part of many photonic systems are under huge development. It is represented by really multidisciplinary research. Small, smart, sensitive, selective, fast, robust, inexpensive and remotely controllable sensors are the ultimate goal. The potential to achieve these capabilities has been demonstrated by different optic and photonic sensor designs and implementations in photonic structures. Progress in material technology, all optical signal processing, innovative system solutions and fabrication technology have driven the optic and photonic sensors further. This paper gives an overview on new trends for optic and photonic sensors.

Photonic Integrated Circuits allow to meet the increasing demand of communication systems for internet which is growing at about 40% per year. This growth is driven mainly by increasing video traffic in the internet network. This growth is now further accelerated by mobile access, with video clients shipping on all smart phones and tablets, enabling video to be consumed more conveniently via network connections anywhere and anytime. This paper reviews several material platform of photonic integrated circuits and compares their performance. Abstract

We present the comparison of optical properties of semiconductor stripe lasers including monolayer InAs/GaAs short period superlattice active layers with and without vertical resonant cavity, respectively. The differences between the performances of the conventional laser with vertical cavity indicate a positive influence of the microcavity on the stability of mode spectra as well as decreasing of threshold current density and their temperature dependence. For the first time the stimulated emission from these combined longitudinal and vertical resonant cavity structures was investigated which is highly interesting for potential device applications. © 2004 American Institute of Physics [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
