There has been increasing interest in using nanosized fillers in cement-based construction materials to upgrade mechanical properties, durability, and multi-functionality. In this context, graphene oxide (GO) is proved to be an effective candidate, and its interaction with cement can lead to remarkable enhancement in its macro-properties. To guarantee reproducibility and to maximize environmental and health safety, a GO water suspension (GONan, Nanesa, Italy) was selected from the market-available products. A complete morphological, microstructural and chemical characterization was performed by Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), Raman Spectroscopy, Infra-Red Spectroscopy (FTIR-ATR), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), and Thermogravimetric Analysis. The aggregation test of GONan in saturated Ca(OH) 2 water solution was also performed, and results were obtained by UV-VIS spectroscopy and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Different dosages (0.01%, 0.1%, and 0.2% by weight of cement) of GONan were added to a commercial M5 mortar. Fresh properties were determined by rheology measurements and flowability and workability tests. Samples were hardened in water at room temperature (RT) for 7, 14, and 28 days. The compressive and bending strength of all samples were evaluated following the standards. The microstructural features of nanocomposites hardened at 28 days were investigated by SEM. Results clearly evidenced that the extra-low GONan dosage (0.01%) was the most promising formulation. Despite the worsening of fresh properties (i.e., increase of plastic viscosity and decrease of flowability and workability by 150%, 50%, and 100%, respectively, compared to the control sample), the mechanical properties of such an extra-low dosage nanocomposite at 14 days showed a notable increase of 20% and 40% for bending and compressive strength, respectively. The impact of graphite nanoplatelets (GNPs) on the physical and mechanical properties of cementitious nanocomposites was investigated. A market-available premixed mortar was modified with 0.01% by weight of cement of commercial GNPs characterized by two distinctively different aspect ratios. The rheological behavior of the GNP-modified fresh admixtures was thoroughly evaluated. Hardened cementitious nanocomposites were investigated in terms of density, microstructure (Scanning Electron Microscopy, SEM and micro–Computed Tomography, μ-CT), mechanical properties (three-point bending and compression tests), and physical properties (electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, EIS and thermal conductivity measurements). At 28 days, all GNP-modified mortars showed about 12% increased density. Mortars reinforced with high aspect ratio GNPs exhibited the highest compressive and flexural strength: about 14% and 4% improvements compared to control sample, respectively. Conversely, low aspect ratio GNPs led to cementitious nanocomposites characterized by 36% decreased electrical resistivity combined with 60% increased thermal conductivity with respect to the control sample. Polyvinyl chloride plastic (PVC) and glass waste have proven to be significant environmental concerns considering their restricted reuse and complicated recycling procedures. Glass and PVC waste materials form a substantial portion of total solid wastes that negatively influence the environment. This study aims to fully replace natural sand with recycled PVC and waste glass aggregates in alkali-activated materials (AAMs). A comprehensive testing programme was employed to investigate the effect of 100 % aggregate replacement on the composites' mechanical performance, water absorption, impact resistance, thermal conductivity, resistance to harsh environments, and microstructural changes. Results revealed that AAMs containing recycled PVC and glass aggregates outperformed their ordinary Portland cement (OPC)-based composite counterparts in terms of mechanical properties, energy absorption, thermal conductivity, and carbon footprint estimation. Although mixtures containing recycled aggregates cannot be deemed for load-bearing applications, these composites exhibited a promising capacity to be used in insulating applications. AAMs containing 100 vol-% PVC aggregates with flexural and compressive strengths of 9 and 11 MPa, respectively, registered the highest energy absorption of about 6 J, three times higher than the AAM control sample, and the lowest thermal conductivity of about 0.5 W/mK, with about 80 % reduction of thermal conductivity compared to the AAM control sample. With the full replacement of PVC and glass aggregates, the most significant decrease in the carbon footprint is achieved for AAM (−352.25 kg CO2-eq) and OPC (−353.94 kg CO2-eq), respectively. Halloysite clay minerals are selected as they are low-cost and abundantly available. At first, different characterisation techniques were employed to characterise the NH and CH additives. Mechanical performance, extrusion window, and shape stability of several AAM formulations containing various dosages (0.5 wt% to 5 wt%) of the NH and CH additives were evaluated. The best-performing mixtures in terms of fresh and hardened properties namely, NH-1.5 and CH-1.5 mixtures (containing 1.5 wt% of NH and CH additives, respectively) were then selected for 3D printing. The results showed that the CH-1.5 mixture exhibited enhanced shape stability, buildability, and mechanical properties as compared to the control mixture. The flexural and compressive strengths of 3D printed CH-1.5 samples were 88% and 40%, respectively higher than those of the printed control samples. Using the CH-1.5 mixture, a twisted column with an intricate shape was printed to verify the suitability of the developed CH-modified AAM for the construction of complex structures. An eco-friendly pre-treatment coupled with surface functionalisation were developed to enhance the quality of wheat straw particles to be used for development of high-performance polylactic acid (PLA) compressed strawboard. Eco-friendly hybrid pre-treatment (i.e., hot water followed by steam, H+S) and surface functionalisation processes employing attapulgite nanoclay (AT) and graphene nanoplatelets (G) were used to obtain an appropriate wheat straw surface quality while increasing its compatibility with the PLA matrix. The successful pre-treatment and surface functionalisation of wheat straw particles was verified through characterisation techniques, including SEM, FTIR, XRD, Raman spectroscopy, and TGA. Tensile strength and water absorption properties of compressed strawboards were examined to investigate the influence of pre-treatment and surface functionalisation of wheat straws. The maximum tensile strengths of 28 MPa and 27 MPa were recorded for 10 H+S-AT and 10 H+S-G samples, respectively, which are considerably higher than the value (i.e., 9.7 MPa) registered for the sample without pre-treatment and surface functionalisation (i.e., 10UN). The lowest water absorption after 24 h of immersion was registered for 10UN-G (i.e., 1.6%), which is 11% and 31% lower than the 10UN and 10 H+S samples, respectively. Utilising wheat straw reinforced OPC-free composites in the construction industry requires efficient, eco-friendly pre-treatment coupled with surface functionalisation methods to turn it into a high-performance material. Herein, alkali-activated material (AAM) was used as an OPC-free matrix, while eco-friendly hybrid pre-treatment and surface functionalisations were applied to mitigate the surface quality deficiencies of wheat straw and improve its compatibility with low-carbon binders. Wheat straw particles were subjected to a mild physical pre-treatment (hot-water followed by steam) and surface functionalisation using attapulgite nanoclay and graphene nanoplatelets to improve their capacity as an effective reinforcing material in AAM. Comprehensive characterisation verified successful pre-treatment and surface functionalisation, which led to the improved interfacial bond between wheat straw and AAM. The best results were obtained for the AAM samples reinforced with pre-treated straw that was functionalised with attapulgite nanoclay (i.e., H+S-AT), in which the volume of permeable voids decreased by 18%, while compressive and flexural strength at 90 d increased by 41% and 27%, respectively, compared to the control sample. The impact of extra-low dosage (0.01% by weight of cement) Graphene Oxide (GO) on the properties of fresh and hardened nanocomposites was assessed. The use of a minimum amount of 2-D nanofiller would minimize costs and sustainability issues, therefore encouraging the market uptake of nanoengineered cement-based materials. GO was characterized by X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), and Raman spectroscopy. GO consisted of stacked sheets up to 600 nm × 800 nm wide and 2 nm thick, oxygen content 31 at%. The impact of GO on the fresh admixtures was evaluated by rheology, flowability, and workability measurements. GO-modified samples were characterized by density measurements, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) analysis, and compression and bending tests. Permeability was investigated using the boiling-water saturation technique, salt ponding test, and Initial Surface Absorption Test (ISAT). At 28 days, GO-nanocomposite exhibited increased density (+14%), improved compressive and flexural strength (+29% and +13%, respectively), and decreased permeability compared to the control sample. The strengthening effect dominated over the adverse effects associated with the worsening of the fresh properties; reduced permeability was mainly attributed to the refining of the pore network induced by the presence of GO. This paper explores the new potential strategy of using fine recycled aggregates (fRA) derived from waste 3D printed concrete (3DPC) as a substitute for cement in additive manufacturing. This study hypothesizes that fRA can optimize mixture design, reduce cement content, and contribute to sustainable construction practices. Experimental programs were conducted to evaluate the fresh and hardened properties, printability window, and buildability of 3DPC mixes containing fRA. Mixes with replacement rates of cement with fRA by 10 vol%, 20 vol%, 30 vol%, 40 vol%, and 50 vol% were produced. A comprehensive experimental protocol consisting of rheological studies (static and dynamic yield stress), dynamic elastic modulus determination (first 24 h of hydration), flexural and compressive strengths (2 d and 28 d), and an open porosity test was performed. The obtained results were verified by printing tests. In addition, an economic and environmental life cycle assessment (LCA) of the mixes was performed. The results indicate that up to 50 vol% cement replacement with fRA is feasible, albeit with some technical drawbacks. While fRA incorporation enhances sustainability by reducing CO2 emissions and material costs, it adversely affects the printability window, green strength, setting time, and mechanical properties, particularly in the initial curing stages. Therefore, with higher replacement rates (above 20 vol%), potential optimization efforts are needed to mitigate drawbacks such as reduced green strength and buildability. Notably, replacement rates of up to 20 vol% can be successfully used without compromising the overall material properties or altering the mixture design. The LCA analysis shows that reducing the cement content and increasing the fRA addition results in a significant reduction in mix cost (up to 24%) and a substantial decrease in equivalent CO2 emissions (up to 48%). This study investigates the addition of Poly-vinyl Alcohol (PVA) fibres and attapulgite nanoclay to alkali-activated materials (AAMs) with the aim of enhancing the mechanical performance and optimizing the printability and buildability of AAMs. The fresh properties of six mix formulations, including flowability, slump values, rheology, shape retention, and extrusion window, were evaluated. The best performing mixes, that exhibited optimal fresh properties, were 3D printed, and their mechanical performance, microstructure, and buildability were investigated. The addition of 1 wt.-% attapulgite nanoclay (i.e. A-1) showed the desirable fresh properties required for 3D printing, as well as providing sufficient mechanical reinforcement to the samples. The 3D printed A-1 samples showed an improved flexural and compressive strength by 43% and 20%, respectively, compared to both the casted and printed control mixes. In this study an extensive experimental campaign has been conducted on mortars modified with nano-Graphite (nG) aimed to assess the properties of the resulting nanocomposites in terms of density, microstructure, flexural and compressive strength, damping ratio, thermal and electrical conductivity. Permeability properties were also investigated in terms of initial surface absorption, water contact angle, volume of permeable voids and chloride ion diffusion. Premixed mortars have been modified with different dosages of commercial nG, i.e. 0.01%, 0.1%, or 0.2% by weight of cement. The rheological behavior of the fresh admixtures has been investigated. Specimens were casted in bars and hardened in water for 7, 14 or 28 days. At 28 days all samples showed enhanced density (i.e. up to 16%) and mechanical properties (i.e. up to 30%) combined to remarkable decreased overall permeability. Incorporating recycled Unplasticised Polyvinyl Chloride (UPVC) aggregates into Alkali Activated Materials (AAMs) presents a promising approach to alleviate the environmental drawbacks associated with conventional recycling methods for UPVC. The distinctive characteristics of UPVC aggregates, as compared to natural sand, pose a challenge in the pursuit of enhancing the mechanical properties of composites. This research aims to achieve net-zero goals and promote circular economy principles by replacing traditional Portland cement (OPC) with low-carbon AAMs and natural aggregates with recycled unplasticised polyvinyl chloride (UPVC) which, accounts for 12% of global plastic production. Coarse and fine UPVC aggregates, measuring 4–6 mm and 0–2 mm, respectively, were incorporated into AAMs. An extensive array of tests was performed to assess their environmental benefits and overall performance enhancements. The results unveiled notable advantages in terms of thermal resistivity and resistance to chloride penetration in the UPVC-infused AAMs. Notably, mixtures containing 100% fine UPVC aggregates exhibited a remarkable 70% reduction in thermal conductivity (0.465 W/mk) when compared to the control. In mechanical assessments, composites containing fine UPVC aggregates surpassed those with coarse UPVC aggregates, showcasing promise for load-bearing applications. Substituting 30% of both fine and coarse UPVC aggregates with sand yielded impressive 7-day compressive strengths of 41 MPa and 35 MPa, respectively. Moreover, the utilisation of energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy confirmed the absence of chloride leaching after three months. This study presents a new approach towards the production of sol-gel silica-coated Bi2O3/Gd2O3 cement additives towards the improvement of early mechanical performance and radiation attenuation. Two types of silica coatings, which varied in synthesis method and morphology, were used to coat Bi2O3/Gd2O3 structures and evaluated as a cement filler in Portland cement pastes. Isothermal calorimetry studies and early strength evaluations confirmed that both proposed coating types can overcome retarded cement hydration process, attributed to Bi2O3 presence, resulting in improved one day compressive strength by 300% and 251% (depending on coating method) when compared to paste containing pristine Bi2O3 and Gd2O3 particles. Moreover, depending on the type of chosen coating type, various rheological performances of cement pastes can be achieved. Thanks to the proposed combination of materials, both gamma-rays and slow neutron attenuation in cement pastes can be simultaneously improved. The introduction of silica coating resulted in an increment of the gamma-ray and neutron shielding thanks to the increased probability of radiation interaction. Along with the positive early age effects of the synthesized structures, the 28 day mechanical performance of cement pastes was not suppressed, and was found to be comparable to that of the control specimen. Due to global environmental concerns related to climate change, the need to improve the service life of structures and infrastructures is imminently urgent. Structural elements typically suffer service life reductions, leading to poor environmental sustainability and high maintenance costs. Graphene oxide nanosheets (GONSs) effectively dispersed in a cement matrix can promote hydration, refine the microstructure and improve interfacial bonding, leading to enhanced building materials' performance, including mechanical strength and transport properties. Cement-based nanocomposites engineered with GONSs were obtained using two commercial nanofillers, a GO water suspension and a free-flowing GO nanopowder, characterized by fully comparable morphology, size and aspect ratio and different oxidation degrees (i.e., oxygen-to-carbon molar ratio), 0.55 and 0.45, respectively. The dosage of the 2D-nanofiller ranged between 0.01% and 0.2% by weight of cement. The electrical and thermal properties were assessed through electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and a heat flow meter, respectively. The results were discussed and linked to micrometric porosity investigated by micro-computed tomography (μ-CT) and transport properties as determined by initial surface absorption test (ISAT), boil-water saturation method (BWS) and chloride ion penetration test. Extra-low dosage mortars, especially those loaded with a lower oxidation degree (i.e., 0.45GO), showed decreased permeability and improved barrier to chloride ion transport combined with enhanced thermal and electrical conductivity with respect to that of the control samples. The increase in concrete structures' durability is a milestone to improve the sustainability of buildings and infrastructures. In order to ensure a prolonged service life, it is necessary to detect the deterioration of materials by means of monitoring systems aimed at evaluating not only the penetration of aggressive substances into concrete but also the corrosion of carbon-steel reinforcement. Therefore, proper data collection makes it possible to plan suitable restoration works which can be carried out with traditional or innovative techniques and materials. The utilisation of biochar, the carbon negative product of pyrolysis, reduces the carbon footprint of the cementitious composites as it possesses the potential to replace the consumption of Portland cement. In a systematic investigation, biochar was used as a partial cement replacement for up to 20 wt% in both cement pastes and mortars. A comprehensive experimental framework was conducted to evaluate the impact of biochar replacement on the performance of (i) cement paste in terms of hydration kinetics, rheology, strength development, porosity, and (ii) mortars in terms of mechanical, thermal, and transport properties. In addition, the durability of developed mortars, including freezing and thawing resistance, thermal resistance, acid (corrosion) resistance, flammability, and smoke production, were examined. The results revealed that lower replacement rates of cement with biochar (up to 5 wt%) do not substantially change the performance of cementitious composites. However, incorporating biochar in higher dosages (i.e., 20 wt%) influenced the hydration process, reduced flexural and compressive strengths by 49% and 29%, respectively, and increased the water absorption coefficient by 60% compared to control specimens. The same cement mortar demonstrated the most promising freeze-thaw (i.e., 98% relative residual compressive strength), acid resistance as well as considerably lower thermal conductivity. In addition, regardless of biochar content, mortars did not exhibit flammability. Low carbon or near-zero carbon concrete technology is in line with the pillars of sustainable development, where industrial waste or low-carbon binders can reduce or eliminate consumption of Portland cement and natural resources, leading to less environmental pollution. This work presents an experimental study on the comparison between alkali-activated materials (also recognized as geopolymers) and a traditional cementitious matrix (Portland cement) incorporated with rubber particles, deriving from end-of-life tires, as replacement of raw mineral aggregates. To explore the potential of rubber-geopolymer compounds, an experimental comparative analysis with rubber-Portland mortars was performed. Initial investigations (microstructural/compositional analysis, porosity and water absorption measurements, and mechanical tests) were conducted on rubberized samples obtained by varying the binder, the sand-rubber replacement ratio (0 vol%, 50 vol%, and 100 vol%) and the rubber particle size (0–1 mm rubber fine aggregate and 1–3 mm rubber granules). The results revealed a greater compatibility of the alkali-activated matrix with tire rubber aggregates, resulting in better performance in terms of interfacial adhesion, reduced porosity rate, flexural strength, and toughness. However, compressive strength results showed a weaker mechanical performance of rubber-geopolymer mixes compared to Portland counterparts. As also verified by Si/Al elemental analysis, the structural quality and mechanical development of the geopolymer matrix was strongly influenced by the removal of sand as a Si-source. The potential embodied carbon emission performance and cost analysis were also estimated to evaluate the economic and environmental impact related to the use of recycled rubber as complete aggregate in Portland and geopolymer mixes. Sustainability analysis revealed the greater environmental friendliness of geopolymer formulations compared to those in ordinary cement, but higher production costs. The total addition of rubber aggregates induced an increase in emissions and costs (variable according to the type of matrix) which, however, does not directly correlate with the processing/price of the polymer fraction. Deepening the research on cleaner matrices and promoting the use of recycled materials in concrete applications could lead to a gap levelling between Portland and geopolymer rubber-based composites. This article is aimed at investigating the long‐term performance of three original hydrophobic materials, namely, sodium acetate, fluoropolymer, and silicone resin. Their performance was compared with traditional silane when applied to fully dry concrete, fully saturated concrete, and concrete with 2 and 4% moisture content. A recently developed freeze–thaw process, which is based on temperature and humidity variations, was employed in this study to assess the durability of applied materials. The outcomes of the adopted freeze–thaw system were compared with the results obtained from running a conventional freeze–thaw test. Mass change, water absorption, and microcracks development of treated concrete were investigated and compared with untreated concrete after completing 6 months of freeze–thaw cycles. Results confirmed the high affinity of the proposed materials to moisture at application time compared with silane. Additionally, it was demonstrated that moisture content has a critical impact on the bonding between applied materials and concrete, hence their efficacy in enhancing the durability of concrete. The main objective of this study is to develop 3D printed heavyweight concrete (3DPHWC) to produce elements with a dry density of up to 3500 kg/m3 by replacing natural aggregate (SA) with magnetite aggregate (MA) up to 100%. A comprehensive systematic study was conducted to thoroughly assess mixtures' mechanical properties, physical proficiency, fresh properties, and printing qualities. The inclusion of MA exhibited the desired fresh properties required for 3D printing and promising physical and mechanical properties. Evaluation of the mechanical properties of designed 3DPHWC indicates that replacing SA with MA increases both cast and printed samples' strengths. The 3D printed M100 sample achieved higher 28 days flexural and compressive strengths by 18 % and 20 %, respectively, compared to printed control mix (M0). Micro-CT study correspondingly demonstrated improvements in the composites' porosity, pore size, and pore morphologies. The linear attenuation coefficients (LACs) and half-value layer (HVLs) for slow neutron and gamma-ray were measured to assess radiation shielding characteristics. A significant performance improvement was obtained for slow neutrons by introducing the magnetite aggregate. Unlike slow neutrons, no significant difference was observed between cast and printed samples against γ-rays. Moreover, the effect of porosity on the shielding performance was discussed.
