Abstract

This study investigates the feasibility of using recycled concrete aggregates (RCA) as subbase materials in roads through laboratory experiments. Various physical tests were conducted on the soil subgrade and RCA subbase, followed by cyclic plate load tests to assess the impact of geosynthetic reinforcement on the bearing capacity of RCA materials. The ultimate bearing capacities of different RCA configurations ranged from 186 to 480 kPa, similar to previous studies on natural and recycled aggregates. The geocell-reinforced section exhibited excellent performance, with a measured ultimate bearing capacity of 480 kPa. The Geocell-Geogrid and Geocell-Geotextile sections showed the highest bearing capacity ratios at 2.58 each, indicating superior performance. Reinforced RCA infills demonstrated improved settlement values under repeated loading, with the geocell-geogrid section effectively reducing permanent settlement. The study concludes that RCA can be a substitute for natural aggregates in road subbase materials, mitigating the environmental impact of construction and demolition waste. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

26. Three-Dimensional Numerical Analysis on the Behaviour of Geocell-Reinforced Retaining Structures

Abstract

The demand for geocell-reinforced retaining walls has increased due to the rising requirements of infrastructural development and constraints in land use. The cumbersome geometry of geocell poses challenges when it comes to numerical modelling. In this study, the geocell-reinforced retaining walls have been modelled using 3D finite element method to investigate the behaviour of the retaining wall by introducing multiple layers of actual honeycomb-shaped geocell mattresses. The result indicates that the provision of reinforcement significantly increases the stability of the retaining wall system. The lateral deformation in the retaining wall increases with an increase in both surcharge load and the wall’s facing angle. The factor of safety was found to decrease by nearly 1.75 times with an increase in the wall’s facing angle from 50 to 80°. With an increase in the height of the geocell mattress from 125 to 250 mm, a significant reduction in lateral displacement was observed. However, further increase in the height of the geocell mattress shows marginal effect on the performance of the composite wall system. Besides, the proposed model shows encouraging agreement with the experimental results indicating that the present model can be used to study the behaviour geocell reinforcement retaining wall system.

Abstract

Vertical anchor plates are often provided to increase the performance of various geotechnical engineering structures such as sheet pile walls, bulkheads, bridge abutments and offshore structures. Hence, the safe design of such structures needs a better understanding of the 3D behaviour of the anchor plate. This paper presents and discusses the results obtained from a series of 3D finite-difference analyses of vertical square anchor plate embedded in cohesionless soil. The 3D model is found to closely predict experimental pullout load–displacement relationship. The failure mechanism observed in the numerical model is found to be very similar to the failure reported in experimental studies. For a given embedment depth, the stiffness of the breakout factor–displacement response substantially reduces with increase in anchor plate size. However, the ultimate reduction in anchor capacity is found to approximately 8% with an increase in anchor size from 0.1 to 1 m. Numerical analysis reveals that at deeper embedment depth, the friction angle of sand is the critical parameter in enhancing the performance of anchor plate.
