Abstract

Significance\ud \ud Communicating in ways that motivate engagement in social distancing remains a critical global public health priority during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study tested motivational qualities of messages about social distancing (those that promoted choice and agency vs. those that were forceful and shaming) in 25,718 people in 89 countries. The autonomy-supportive message decreased feelings of defying social distancing recommendations relative to the controlling message, and the controlling message increased controlled motivation, a less effective form of motivation, relative to no message. Message type did not impact intentions to socially distance, but people’s existing motivations were related to intentions. Findings were generalizable across a geographically diverse sample and may inform public health communication strategies in this and future global health emergencies.\ud \ud \ud \ud Abstract\ud \ud Finding communication strategies that effectively motivate social distancing continues to be a global public health priority during the COVID-19 pandemic. This cross-country, preregistered experiment (n = 25,718 from 89 countries) tested hypotheses concerning generalizable positive and negative outcomes of social distancing messages that promoted personal agency and reflective choices (i.e., an autonomy-supportive message) or were restrictive and shaming (i.e., a controlling message) compared with no message at all. Results partially supported experimental hypotheses in that the controlling message increased controlled motivation (a poorly internalized form of motivation relying on shame, guilt, and fear of social consequences) relative to no message. On the other hand, the autonomy-supportive message lowered feelings of defiance compared with the controlling message, but the controlling message did not differ from receiving no message at all. Unexpectedly, messages did not influence autonomous motivation (a highly internalized form of motivation relying on one’s core values) or behavioral intentions. Results supported hypothesized associations between people’s existing autonomous and controlled motivations and self-reported behavioral intentions to engage in social distancing. Controlled motivation was associated with more defiance and less long-term behavioral intention to engage in social distancing, whereas autonomous motivation was associated with less defiance and more short- and long-term intentions to social distance. Overall, this work highlights the potential harm of using shaming and pressuring language in public health communication, with implications for the current and future global health challenges.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic (and its aftermath) highlights a critical need to communicate health information effectively to the global public. Given that subtle differences in information framing can have meaningful effects on behavior, behavioral science research highlights a pressing question: Is it more effective to frame COVID-19 health messages in terms of potential losses (e.g., “If you do not practice these steps, you can endanger yourself and others”) or potential gains (e.g., “If you practice these steps, you can protect yourself and others”)? Collecting data in 48 languages from 15,929 participants in 84 countries, we experimentally tested the effects of message framing on COVID-19-related judgments, intentions, and feelings. Loss- (vs. gain-) framed messages increased self-reported anxiety among participants cross-nationally with little-to-no impact on policy attitudes, behavioral intentions, or information seeking relevant to pandemic risks. These results were consistent across 84 countries, three variations of the message framing wording, and 560 data processing and analytic choices. Thus, results provide an empirical answer to a global communication question and highlight the emotional toll of loss-framed messages. Critically, this work demonstrates the importance of considering unintended affective consequences when evaluating nudge-style interventions.

23. Trade, Determinants, and Causality: A Case of Hong Kong's Exports to The United States.

Abstract

This paper examines recent development in Hong Kong's exports to the United States. It explains the trade flows by estimating five demand-equations for exports. Besides, vector autoregressions are fitted to test the causal relationship among exports, exchange rates and income. Our study suggests that a sustained high growth rate of Hong Kong's exports of principal commodities to the United States contribute to the chronical bilateral trade surplus for Hong Kong. Abstract

The central performance testing station of the National Animal Industry Foundation was testing breeding swine regularly in Taiwan. The testing collected phenotypic data to calculate the selection index and genotyping six loci to evaluate the genetic component of breeding pigs for more than 25 years. The loci were including PSS, H-FABP, ESR, IGF2, and PRLR genes, PCR-RFLP or MS-PCR screening is the major and fundamental method for genotyping identification, but the disadvantages were labor-intensive and time-consuming. The goal of this study is to develop a rapid, high accuracy, and high-throughput gene testing chip for regular genotyping. The material of this study was used genotype confirmed DNA, and compared with the results from the Breeding Pig gene testing panel. Data have shown there was no significant difference between the two platforms (K > 0.95). Therefore, the Breeding Pig gene testing chip provides a rapid, cost-efficient, high accuracy, and high-throughput platform to improve the efficiency of pig genotyping in Taiwan. Abstract

The value of the pig industry is the highest in livestock animals and presents the importance to agricultural production in Taiwan. Nowadays, most commercial pigs are crossbred, but due to the high quality of pork, Taiwan black pigs became the popular breed in the production system. However, the complexity of the local farming system, the uniformity, growth traits, and carcass traits are different in Taiwan black pig breeds. Therefore, it is necessary to characterize and identification different Taiwan black pig breeds with molecular technology. In this study, we extracted gDNA from the following black breeds: Taoyuan, Meishan, TLRI Black Pig No.l, KHAPS Black Pig from Livestock Research Institute; Pinpu, Liu-Dui, New Zeng-Feng black pig. The 640 K SNP array was used for genetic structure analysis. The results showed we can identify and reveal the genetic structure between different Taiwan black pig breeds and could provide information for breeding and management. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ultrasound technician training and certification conference was conducted in August 2021. Due to COVID-19 pandemic, 59 participants were attend the meeting less than last five years, and 31 of them took the written test and scanned pigs using A mode and B mode ultrasound. A mode was scanned backfat (BF) and the loin depth (LD) of 30 pigs, whereas B mode was scanned BF and loin eye area (LMA) of 20 pigs. After slaughtering, the composition traits were measured. The criteria used to qualify an ultrasound technician are correlation between live and carcass measured composition traits (0.80); repeatability (0.80), and correlation among operators (0.80). While scanning BF, one A mode operator was qualified for A class, four and four B mode operators were qualified for certification of A and B classes. In LMA, one operators were qualified for certification of B classes. In last ten year, pass rate of A mode in BF was from 17.4 to 54.8% and only 4 participants passed in loin depth; B mode in BF and LMA were from 60 to 95.2% and 0 to 34.8%, repeatability. To improve accuracy, more training is required for measuring LD and LMA. Development and validation of new indicators for evaluating ultrasound technicians is required. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Purebred swine performance testing is an important method in selection for reducing feeding costs and improving nucleus herd performance. Taiwan Swine On-Farm Test Database System was constructed in 2010. The system functions include uploading and analysis of performance records, and output of phenotypic reports, as well as provision of purebred pig registration data for on-site basic data (pedigree and reproduction records) review. As the number of tested pigs increases, the operation of ultrasound testing of participate breeders becomes more stable, which allow the breeding value of each trait of the tested purebred can be estimated. Therefore, the on-farm testing database system was been upgraded in 2019 ~ 2020: establish the subsystems of ultrasonic technician registration, auction information management, and EBV calculation. This revision system provides EBV retrieval of each trait of a single pig, and presents the results in QR code format. The breeding farm can instantly read the pedigree and EBV information to confirm the genetic potential of specific pigs, which might be facilitate to carry out the genetic improvement for enhancing the performance of breeding herds. Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic (and its aftermath) highlights a critical need to communicate health information effectively to the global public. Given that subtle differences in information framing can have meaningful effects on behavior, behavioral science research highlights a pressing question: Is it more effective to frame COVID-19 health messages in terms of potential losses (e.g., “If you do not practice these steps, you can endanger yourself and others”) or potential gains (e.g., “If you practice these steps, you can protect yourself and others”)? Collecting data in 48 languages from 15,929 participants in 84 countries, we experimentally tested the effects of message framing on COVID-19-related judgments, intentions, and feelings. Loss- (vs. gain-) framed messages increased self-reported anxiety among participants cross-nationally with little-to-no impact on policy attitudes, behavioral intentions, or information seeking relevant to pandemic risks. These results were consistent across 84 countries, three variations of the message framing wording, and 560 data processing and analytic choices. Thus, results provide an empirical answer to a global communication question and highlight the emotional toll of loss-framed messages. Critically, this work demonstrates the importance of considering unintended affective consequences when evaluating nudge-style interventions.

30. CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE PROFILE AND ITS RELATION TO DIABETES IN ARSENIASISENDEMIC AREA IN SOUTHWESTERN TAIWAN

Abstract

Based on our published data, there is indication that ingestion of arsenic may lead to increased risk of non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus and related vascular diseases. Dyslipidemia is an important factor in causation of macrovascular disease in the type 2 diabetics from the general population. Although the lipid profile did not differ significantly between peripheral vascular disease (PVD) and non-PVD subjects in arseniasis-endemic area, the lipid profiles in diabeties in this area had not been investigated. The objective of this study is to assess obesity indices and biochemistry profile among diabetic and non-diabetic subjects in three arseniasis-endemic villages in southwestern coast of Taiwan.

31. Cap-independent translation conferred by the 5'-untranslated region of human thymidine kinase mRNA.

Abstract

Translational control is one of the mechanisms that regulate thymidine kinase (TK) expression in the cell cycle. Evidence for the TK mRNA sequence that is involved in its own translation has been lacking. In this report, we show that TK-deficient mouse fibroblasts transfected with pFLAG-TK express a TK mRNA containing the 5'-untranslated region (5'UTR) and produce two polypeptides, FLAG-TK and TK, resulting from an alternative initiation of translation. Most interestingly, the 5'UTR of TK allowed the translation of FLAG-TK mRNA to become cap-independent in an in vitro translation system. Furthermore, this 5'UTR sequence decreased significantly the efficiency of translation from the AUG codon of FLAG when the concentration of FLAG-TK RNA was low. Here, we also show that in normal human IMR-90 fibroblasts the induction of TK polypeptide by serum stimulation is insensitive to rapamycin treatment, which is known to inhibit the translations of transcripts of some growth-controlled genes by affecting the cap-binding efficiency. Taken together, we propose that the 5'UTR in TK mRNA might actually confer a secondary structure to regulate ribosome binding during translation in a cap-independent manner.
