We report detailed inelastic neutron scattering measurements on single crystals of the frustrated two-leg ladder BiCu2PO6, whose ground state is described as a spin liquid phase with no long-range order down to 6 K. Two branches of steeply dispersing long-lived spin excitations are observed with excitation gaps of \Delta_1 = 1.90(9) meV and \Delta_2 = 3.95(8) meV. Significant frustrating next-nearest neighbour interactions along the ladder leg drive the minimum of each excitation branch to incommensurate wavevectors \zeta_1 = 0.574\pi and \zeta_2 = 0.553\pi for the lower and upper energy branches respectively. The temperature dependence of the excitation spectrum near the gap energy is consistent with thermal activation into singly and doubly degenerate excited states. The observed magnetic excitation spectrum as well as earlier thermodynamic data could be consistently explained by the presence of strong anisotropic interactions in the ground state Hamiltonian., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

We present results of magnetic neutron diffraction experiments on the codoped superoxygenated La2-xSrxCuO4+y (LSCO+O) system with x=0.09. We find that the magnetic phase is long-range ordered incommensurate antiferromagnetic with a Neacuteel temperature T-N coinciding with the superconducting ordering temperature T-c=40 K. The incommensurability value is consistent with a hole doping of n(h)approximate to 1>8 but in contrast to nonsuperoxygenated La2-xSrxCuO4 with hole doping close to n(h)approximate to 18 the magnetic-order parameter is not field dependent. We attribute this to the magnetic order being fully developed in LSCO+O as in the spin and charge ordered "stripe" compounds La1.48Nd0.40Sr0.12CuO4 and La7/8Ba1/8CuO4.

Shubnikov–de Haas oscillations for two well-defined frequencies, corresponding, respectively, to areas of 0.8 and 1.36% of the first Brillouin zone, were observed in single crystals of Na0.3CoO2. The existence of Na superstructures in Na0.3CoO2, coupled with this observation, suggests the possibility that the periods are due to the reconstruction of the large Fermi surface around the ? point. An alternative interpretation in terms of the long sought-after ?g? pockets is also considered but found to be incompatible with existing specific heat data.

We report an electron spin resonance (ESR) study of the s = 1/2 Heisenberg pseudo-ladder magnet CaCu2O3 in pulsed magnetic fields up to 40 T. At sub-terahertz frequencies we observe an ESR signal originating from a small amount of uncompensated spins residing presumably at the imperfections of the strongly antiferromagnetically correlated host spin lattice. The data give evidence that these few per cent of 'extra' spin states are coupled strongly to the bulk spins and are involved in the antiferromagnetic (AF) ordering at TN = 25 K. By mapping the frequency/resonance field diagram we have determined a small gap for magnetic excitations below TN of the order of ~0.3–0.8 meV. Such a small value of the gap explains the occurrence of the spin-flop transition in CaCu2O3 at weak magnetic fields μ0Hsf ~ 3 T. Qualitative changes of the ESR response with the increasing field strength give indications that strong magnetic fields reduce the AF correlations and may even suppress the long-range magnetic order in CaCu2O3. ESR data support scenarios with a significant role of the 'extra' spin states for the properties of low-dimensional quantum magnets.
