Luminous interacting supernovae are a class of stellar explosions whose progenitors underwent vigorous mass loss in the years prior to core-collapse. While the mechanism by which this material is ejected is still debated, obtaining the full density profile of the circumstellar medium (CSM) could reveal more about this process. Here, we present an extensive multi-wavelength study of PS1-11aop, a luminous and slowly declining Type IIn SN discovered by the PanSTARRS Medium Deep Survey. PS1-11aop had a peak r-band magnitude of $-$20.5\,mag, a total radiated energy $>$ 8$\times$10$^{50}$\,erg, and it exploded near the center of a star-forming galaxy with super-solar metallicity. We obtained multiple detections at the location of PS1-11aop in the radio and X-ray bands between 4 and 10\,years post-explosion, and if due to the SN, it is one of the most luminous radio supernovae identified to date. Taken together, the multiwavelength properties of PS1-11aop are consistent with a CSM density profile with multiple zones. The early optical emission is consistent with the supernova blastwave interacting with a dense and confined CSM shell which contains multiple solar masses of material that was likely ejected in the final $<$10-100 years prior to the explosion,($\sim$0.05$-$1.0 M$_{\odot}$yr$^{-1}$ at radii of $\lesssim$10$^{16}$\,cm). The radio observations, on the other hand, are consistent with a sparser environment ($\lesssim$2$\times 10^{-3}$ M$_{\odot}$yr$^{-1}$ at radii of $\sim$0.5-1$\times$10$^{17}$\,cm) -- thus probing the history of the progenitor star prior to its final mass loss episode., Comment: 37 pages, 17 figures

The precise atomic structure and therefore the wavelength-dependent opacities of lanthanides are highly uncertain. This uncertainty introduces systematic errors in modeling transients like kilonovae and estimating key properties such as mass, characteristic velocity, and heavy metal content. Here, we quantify how atomic data from across the literature as well as choices of thermalization efficiency of r-process radioactive decay heating impact the light curve and spectra of kilonovae. Specifically, we analyze the spectra of a grid of models produced by the radiative transfer code \texttt{Sedona} that span the expected range of kilonova properties to identify regions with the highest systematic uncertainty. Our findings indicate that differences in atomic data have a substantial impact on estimates of lanthanide mass fraction, spanning approximately one order of magnitude for lanthanide-rich ejecta, and demonstrate the difficulty in precisely measuring the lanthanide fraction in lanthanide-poor ejecta. Mass estimates vary typically by 25-40$\%$ for differing atomic data. Similarly, the choice of thermalization efficiency can affect mass estimates by 20$\%$ to 50$\%$. Observational properties such as color and decay rate are \textit{highly} model-dependent. Velocity estimation, when fitting solely based on the light curve, can have a typical error of $\sim 100\%$. Atomic data of light r-process elements can strongly affect blue emission. Even for well-observed events like GW170817, the total lanthanide production estimated using different atomic datasets can vary by a factor of $\sim6$.

We present multiwavelength observations of the Swift short $\gamma$-ray burst GRB 231117A, localized to an underlying galaxy at redshift $z = 0.257$ at a small projected offset ($\sim 2~$kpc). We uncover long-lived X-ray (Chandra) and radio/millimeter (VLA, MeerKAT, and ALMA) afterglow emission, detected to $\sim 37~$days and $\sim 20~$days (rest frame), respectively. We measure a wide jet ($\sim 10.4^\circ$) and relatively high circumburst density ($\sim 0.07~{\rm cm}^{-3}$) compared to the short GRB population. Our data cannot be easily fit with a standard forward shock model, but they are generally well fit with the incorporation of a refreshed forward shock and a reverse shock at $< 1~$day. We incorporate GRB 231117A into a larger sample of 132 X-ray detected events, 71 of which were radio-observed (17 cm-band detections), for a systematic study of the distributions of redshifts, jet and afterglow properties, galactocentric offsets, and local environments of events with and without detected radio afterglows. Compared to the entire short GRB population, the majority of radio-detected GRBs are at relatively low redshifts ($z < 0.6$) and have high circumburst densities ($> 10^{-2}~{\rm cm}^{-3}$), consistent with their smaller ($< 8~$kpc) projected galactocentric offsets. We additionally find that 70% of short GRBs with opening angle measurements were radio-detected, indicating the importance of radio afterglows in jet measurements, especially in the cases of wide ($> 10^\circ$) jets where observational evidence of collimation may only be detectable at radio wavelengths. Close binary systems are the progenitors to both Type Ia supernovae and the compact object mergers that can be detected via gravitational waves. To achieve a binary with a small radial separation, it is believed that the system likely undergoes common envelope (CE) evolution. Despite its importance, CE evolution may be one of the largest uncertainties in binary evolution due to a combination of computational challenges and a lack of observed benchmarks where both the post-CE and pre-CE conditions are known. Identifying post-CE systems in star clusters can partially circumvent this second issue by providing an independent age constraint on the system. For the first time, we conduct a systematic search for white dwarf (WD) and main-sequence (MS) binary systems in 299 Milky Way open star clusters. Coupling Gaia DR3 photometry and kinematics with multi-band photometry from Pan-STARRS1 and 2MASS, we apply a machine learning based approach and find 52 high-probability candidates in 38 open clusters. For a subset of our systems, we present follow-up spectroscopy from the Gemini and Lick Observatories and archival light curves from TESS, Kepler/K2 and the Zwicky Transient Facility. Examples of M-dwarfs with hot companions are spectroscopically observed, along with regular system variability. While the kinematics of our candidates are consistent with their host clusters, some systems have spatial positions offset relative to their hosts, potentially indicative of natal kicks. Ultimately, this catalogue is a first step to obtaining a set of observational benchmarks to better link post-CE systems to their pre-CE progenitors., Comment: 35 pages, 18 figures. Submitted to ApJ

We present the tidal disruption event (TDE) AT2022lri, hosted in a nearby ($\approx\!144$ Mpc) quiescent galaxy with a low-mass massive black hole ($10^4\,M_\odot < M_{\rm BH} < 10^6\,M_\odot$). AT2022lri belongs to the TDE-H+He subtype. More than 1 Ms of X-ray data were collected with NICER, Swift, and XMM-Newton from 187 d to 672 d after peak. The X-ray luminosity gradually declined from $1.5\times 10^{44}\,{\rm erg\,s^{-1}}$ to $1.5\times 10^{43}\,{\rm erg\,s^{-1}}$ and remains much above the UV and optical luminosity, consistent with a super-Eddington accretion flow viewed face-on. Sporadic strong X-ray dips atop a long-term decline are observed, with variability timescale of $\approx\!0.5$ hr--1 d and amplitude of $\approx\!2$--8. When fitted with simple continuum models, the X-ray spectrum is dominated by a thermal disk component with inner temperature going from $\sim\! 146$ eV to $\sim\! 86$ eV. However, there are residual features that peak around 1 keV, which, in some cases, cannot be reproduced by a single broad emission line. We analyzed a subset of time-resolved spectra with two physically motivated models describing either a scenario where ionized absorbers contribute extra absorption and emission lines or where disk reflection plays an important role. Both models provide good and statistically comparable fits, show that the X-ray dips are correlated with drops in the inner disk temperature, and require the existence of sub-relativistic (0.1--0.3$c$) ionized outflows. We propose that the disk temperature fluctuation stems from episodic drops of the mass accretion rate triggered by magnetic instabilities or/and wobbling of the inner accretion disk along the black hole's spin axis., Comment: 35 pages, 20 figures, submitted

We present detailed radio observations of the tidal disruption event (TDE) ASASSN-19bt/AT2019ahk, obtained with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA), the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), and the MeerKAT radio telescopes, spanning 40 to 1464 days after the onset of the optical flare. We find that ASASSN-19bt displays unusual radio evolution compared to other TDEs, as the peak brightness of its radio emission increases rapidly until 457 days post-optical discovery and then plateaus. Using a generalized approach to standard equipartition techniques, we estimate the energy and corresponding physical parameters for two possible emission geometries: a non-relativistic spherical outflow and a relativistic outflow observed from an arbitrary viewing angle. We find that the non-relativistic solution implies a continuous energy rise in the outflow from $E\sim10^{46}$ erg to $E\sim10^{49}$ erg with $\beta \approx 0.05$, while the off-axis relativistic jet solution instead suggests $E\approx10^{52}$ erg with $\Gamma\sim10$ erg at late times in the maximally off-axis case. We find that neither model provides a holistic explanation for the origin and evolution of the radio emission, emphasizing the need for more complex models. ASASSN-19bt joins the population of TDEs that display unusual radio emission at late times. Conducting long-term radio observations of these TDEs, especially during the later phases, will be crucial for understanding how these types of radio emission in TDEs are produced., Comment: 25 pages. We present rest-frame UV \textit{Hubble Space Telescope} imaging of the largest and most complete sample of 23 long duration gamma-ray burst (GRB) host galaxies between redshifts 4 and 6. Of these 23, we present new WFC3/F110W imaging for 19 of the hosts, which we combine with archival WFC3/F110W and WFC3/F140W imaging for the remaining four. We use the photometry of the host galaxies from this sample to characterize both the rest-frame UV luminosity function (LF) and the size-luminosity relation of the sample. We find that when assuming the standard Schechter-function parameterization for the UV LF, the GRB host sample is best fit with $\alpha = -1.30^{+0.30}_{-0.25}$ and $M_* = -20.33^{+0.44}_{-0.54}$ mag, which is consistent with results based on $z\sim5$ Lyman-break galaxies. We find that $\sim68\%$ of our size-luminosity measurements fall within or below the same relation for Lyman-break galaxies at $z\sim4$. This study observationally confirms expectations that at $z\sim5$ Lyman-break and GRB host galaxies should trace the same population and demonstrates the utility of GRBs as probes of hidden star-formation in the high-redshift universe. Under the assumption that GRBs unbiasedly trace star formation at this redshift, our non-detection fraction of 7/23 is consistent at the $95\%$-confidence level with $13 - 53\%$ of star formation at redshift $z\sim5$ occurring in galaxies fainter than our detection limit of $M_{1600 A} \sim -18.3$ mag., Comment: 26 pages, 5 figures

Identifying the astrophysical sites of the $r$-process, one of the primary mechanisms by which heavy elements are formed, is a key goal of modern astrophysics. The discovery of the brightest gamma-ray burst of all time, GRB 221009A, at a relatively nearby redshift, presented the first opportunity to spectroscopically test the idea that $r$-process elements are produced following the collapse of rapidly rotating massive stars. Here we present spectroscopic and photometric $\textit{James Webb Space Telescope}$ (JWST) observations of GRB 221009A obtained $+168$ and $+170$ rest-frame days after the initial gamma-ray trigger, and demonstrate they are well-described by a supernova (SN) and power-law afterglow, with no evidence for an additional component from $r$-process emission, and that the SN component strongly resembles the near-infrared spectra of previous SNe, including SN 1998bw. We further find that the SN associated with GRB 221009A is slightly fainter than the expected brightness of SN 1998bw at this phase, concluding that the SN is therefore not an unusual GRB-SN. We infer a nickel mass of $\approx0.09$ M$_{\odot}$, consistent with the lack of an obvious SN detection in the early-time data. We find that the host galaxy of GRB 221009A has a very low metallicity of $\approx0.12$ Z$_{\odot}$ and our resolved host spectrum shows that GRB 221009A occurred in a unique environment in its host characterized by strong H$_2$ emission lines consistent with recent star formation, which may hint at environmental factors being responsible for its extreme energetics., Comment: 32 pages, 14 Figures, Submitted to Nature Astronomy

We present radio observations of 23 optically discovered tidal disruption events (TDEs) on timescales of 500-3200 days post discovery. We detect nine new TDEs that did not have detectable radio emission at earlier times, indicating a late-time brightening after several hundred (and up to 2300) days; an additional seven TDEs exhibit radio emission whose origin is ambiguous or may be attributed to the host galaxy or an active galactic nucleus. We also report a new rising component in one TDE previously detected in the radio at 10^3 days. While the radio emission in some of the detected TDEs peaked on a timescale 2-4 yr, over half of the sample still show rising emission. The range of luminosities for the sample is 10^37-10^39 erg/s, about 2 orders of magnitude below the radio luminosity of the relativistic TDE Sw J1644+57. Our data set indicates 40% of all optical TDEs are detected in radio hundreds to thousands of days after discovery, and that this is probably more common than early radio emission peaking at 10^2 days. Using an equipartition analysis, we find evidence for a delayed launch of the radio-emitting outflows, with delay timescales of 500-2000 days, inferred velocities of 0.02-0.15c, and kinetic energies of 10^47-10^49 erg. We rule out off axis relativistic jets as a viable explanation for this population, and conclude delayed outflows are a more likely explanation, possibly from delayed disk formation. We present the photometric and spectroscopic evolution of SN 2022oqm, a nearby multi-peaked hydrogen- and helium-weak calcium-rich transient (CaRT). SN 2022oqm was detected 13.1 kpc from its host galaxy, the face-on spiral galaxy NGC 5875. Extensive spectroscopic coverage reveals an early hot (T >= 40,000 K) continuum and carbon features observed $\sim$1~day after discovery, SN Ic-like photospheric-phase spectra, and strong forbidden calcium emission starting 38 days after discovery. SN 2022oqm has a relatively high peak luminosity (MB = -17 mag) for (CaRTs), making it an outlier in the population. We determine that three power sources are necessary to explain the light curve (LC), with each corresponding to a distinct peak. The first peak is powered by an expanding blackbody with a power law luminosity, suggesting shock cooling by circumstellar material (CSM). Subsequent LC evolution is powered by a double radioactive decay model, consistent with two sources of photons diffusing through optically thick ejecta. From the LC, we derive an ejecta mass and 56Ni mass of ~0.6 solar masses and ~0.09 solar masses. Spectroscopic modeling suggests 0.6 solar masses of ejecta, and with well-mixed Fe-peak elements throughout. We discuss several physical origins for SN 2022oqm and find either a surprisingly massive white dwarf progenitor or a peculiar stripped envelope model could explain SN 2022oqm. A stripped envelope explosion inside a dense, hydrogen- and helium-poor CSM, akin to SNe Icn, but with a large 56Ni mass and small CSM mass could explain SN 2022oqm. We present six epochs of optical spectropolarimetry of the Type II supernova (SN) 2023ixf ranging from $\sim$ 2 to 15 days after the explosion. Polarimetry was obtained with the Kast double spectrograph on the Shane 3 m telescope at Lick Observatory, representing the earliest such observations ever captured for an SN. We observe a high continuum polarization $p_{\text{cont}} \approx 1$ % on days +1.4 and +2.5 before dropping to 0.5 % on day +3.5, persisting at that level up to day +14.5. Remarkably, this change coincides temporally with the disappearance of highly ionized "flash" features. The decrease of the continuum polarization is accompanied by a $\sim 70^\circ$ rotation of the polarization position angle ($PA$) as seen across the continuum. The early evolution of the polarization may indicate different geometric configurations of the electron-scattering atmosphere as seen before and after the disappearance of the emission lines associated with highly-ionized species (e.g., He II, C IV, N III), which are likely produced by elevated mass loss shortly prior to the SN explosion. We interpret the rapid change of polarization and $PA$ from days +2.5 to +4.5 as the time when the SN ejecta emerge from the dense asymmetric circumstellar material (CSM). The temporal evolution of the continuum polarization and the $PA$ is consistent with an aspherical SN explosion that exhibits a distinct geometry compared to the CSM. The rapid follow-up spectropolarimetry of SN 2023ixf during the shock ionization phase reveals an exceptionally asymmetric mass-loss process leading up to the explosion., Comment: Accepted to ApJL

We report multi-wavelength observations and characterization of the ultraluminous transient AT 2021lwx (ZTF20abrbeie; aka ``Barbie'') identified in the alert stream of the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) using a Recommender Engine For Intelligent Transient Tracking (REFITT) filter on the ANTARES alert broker. From a spectroscopically measured redshift of 0.995, we estimate a peak observed pseudo-bolometric luminosity of log (L$_{\text{max}} / [\text{erg}/\text{s}]$) = 45.7 from slowly fading ztf-$\it{g}$ and ztf-$r$ light curves spanning over 1000 observer-frame days. The host galaxy is not detected in archival Pan-STARRS observations ($g > 23.3$ mag), implying a lower limit to the outburst amplitude of more than 5 mag relative to the quiescent host galaxy. Optical spectra from Lick and Keck Observatories exhibit strong emission lines with narrow cores from the H Balmer series and ultraviolet semi-forbidden lines of Si III] $\lambda$1892, C III] $\lambda$1909, and C II] $\lambda$2325. Typical nebular lines in AGN spectra from ions such as [O II] and [O III] are not detected. These spectral features, along with the smooth light curve that is unlike most AGN flaring activity, and the luminosity that exceeds any observed or theorized supernova, lead us to conclude that AT 2021lwx is most likely an extreme tidal disruption event (TDE). Modeling of ZTF photometry with MOSFiT suggests that the TDE was between a $\approx 14 M_{\odot}$ star and a supermassive black hole of mass $M_{\text{BH}} \sim$ $10^{8} M_{\odot}$. GRB 221009A ($z=0.151$) is one of the closest known long $\gamma$-ray bursts (GRBs). Its extreme brightness across all electromagnetic wavelengths provides an unprecedented opportunity to study a member of this still-mysterious class of transients in exquisite detail. We present multi-wavelength observations of this extraordinary event, spanning 15 orders of magnitude in photon energy from radio to $\gamma$-rays. We find that the data can be partially explained by a forward shock (FS) from a highly-collimated relativistic jet interacting with a low-density wind-like medium. Under this model, the jet's beaming-corrected kinetic energy ($E_K \sim 4\times10^{50}$ erg) is typical for the GRB population. The radio and mm data provide strong limiting constraints on the FS model, but require the presence of an additional emission component. From equipartition arguments, we find that the radio emission is likely produced by a small amount of mass ($\lesssim6\times10^{-7} M_\odot$) moving relativistically ($\Gamma\gtrsim9$) with a large kinetic energy ($\gtrsim10^{49}$ erg). However, the temporal evolution of this component does not follow prescriptions for synchrotron radiation from a single power-law distribution of electrons (e.g. in a reverse shock or two-component jet), or a thermal electron population, perhaps suggesting that one of the standard assumptions of afterglow theory is violated. We analyze a sample of 45 Type II supernovae from the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) public survey using a grid of hydrodynamical models in order to assess whether theoretically-driven forecasts can intelligently guide follow up observations supporting all-sky survey alert streams. We estimate several progenitor properties and explosion physics parameters including zero-age-main-sequence (ZAMS) mass, mass-loss rate, kinetic energy, 56Ni mass synthesized, host extinction, and the time of explosion. Using complete light curves we obtain confident characterizations for 34 events in our sample, with the inferences of the remaining 11 events limited either by poorly constraining data or the boundaries of our model grid. We also simulate real-time characterization of alert stream data by comparing our model grid to various stages of incomplete light curves (t less than 25 days, t less than 50 days, all data), and find that some parameters are more reliable indicators of true values at early epochs than others. Specifically, ZAMS mass, time of explosion, steepness parameter beta, and host extinction are reasonably constrained with incomplete light curve data, whereas mass-loss rate, kinetic energy and 56Ni mass estimates generally require complete light curves spanning greater than 100 days. We conclude that real-time modeling of transients, supported by multi-band synthetic light curves tailored to survey passbands, can be used as a powerful tool to identify critical epochs of follow up observations. We present a comprehensive study of 29 short gamma-ray bursts (SGRBs) observed $\approx 0.8-60$ days post-burst using $Chandra$ and $XMM-Newton$. We provide the inferred distributions of SGRB jet opening angles and true event rates to compare against neutron star merger rates. We perform uniform analysis and modeling of their afterglows, obtaining 10 opening angle measurements and 19 lower limits. We report on two new opening angle measurements (SGRBs 050724A and 200411A) and eight updated values, obtaining a median value of $\langle \theta_{\rm j} \rangle \approx 6.1^{\circ}$ [-3.2$^{\circ}$,+9.3$^{\circ}$] (68\% confidence on the full distribution) from jet measurements alone. For the remaining events, we infer $\theta_{\rm j}\gtrsim 0.5-26^{\circ}$. We uncover a population of SGRBs with wider jets of $\theta_{\rm j} \gtrsim 10^{\circ}$ (including two measurements of $\theta_{\rm j} \gtrsim 15^{\circ}$), representing $\sim 28\%$ of our sample. Coupled with multi-wavelength afterglow information, we derive a total true energy of $\langle E_{\rm true, tot} \rangle \approx 10^{49}-10^{50}$\,erg which is consistent with MHD jet launching mechanisms. Furthermore, we determine a range for the beaming-corrected event rate of $\mathfrak{R}_{\rm true} \approx360-1800$ Gpc$^{-3}$ yr$^{-1}$, set by the inclusion of a population of wide jets on the low end, and the jet measurements alone on the high end. From a comparison with the latest merger rates, our results are consistent with the majority of SGRBs originating from binary neutron star mergers. The Vera C. Rubin Legacy Survey of Space and Time holds the potential to revolutionize time domain astrophysics, reaching completely unexplored areas of the Universe and mapping variability time scales from minutes to a decade. To prepare to maximize the potential of the Rubin LSST data for the exploration of the transient and variable Universe, one of the four pillars of Rubin LSST science, the Transient and Variable Stars Science Collaboration, one of the eight Rubin LSST Science Collaborations, has identified research areas of interest and requirements, and paths to enable them. We present late-time radio/millimeter (as well as optical/UV and X-ray) detections of the tidal disruption event (TDE) AT2018hyz, spanning $970 - 1300$ d after optical discovery. In conjunction with earlier deeper limits, including at $\approx 700$ d, our observations reveal rapidly rising emission at $0.8-240$ GHz, steeper than $F_\nu\propto t^5$ relative to the time of optical discovery. Such a steep rise cannot be explained in any reasonable scenario of an outflow launched at the time of disruption (e.g., off-axis jet, sudden increase in the ambient density), and instead points to a delayed launch. Our multi-frequency data allow us to directly determine the radius and energy of the radio-emitting outflow, showing that it was launched $\approx 750$ d after optical discovery. The outflow velocity is mildly relativistic, with $\beta\approx 0.25$ and $\approx 0.6$ for a spherical and a $10^\circ$ jet geometry, respectively, and the minimum kinetic energy is $E_K\approx 5.8\times 10^{49}$ and $\approx 6.3\times 10^{49}$ erg, respectively. This is the first definitive evidence for the production of a delayed mildly-relativistic outflow in a TDE; a comparison to the recently-published radio light curve of ASASSN-15oi suggests that the final re-brightening observed in that event (at a single frequency and time) may be due to a similar outflow with a comparable velocity and energy. Finally, we note that the energy and velocity of the delayed outflow in AT2018hyz are intermediate between those of past non-relativistic TDEs (e.g., ASASSN-14li, AT2019dsg) and the relativistic TDE Sw\,J1644+57. We present a comprehensive optical and near-infrared census of the fields of 90 short gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) discovered in 2005-2021, constituting all short GRBs for which host galaxy associations are feasible ($\approx$ 60% of the total Swift short GRB population). We contribute 245 new multi-band imaging observations across 49 distinct GRBs and 25 spectra of their host galaxies. Supplemented by literature and archival survey data, the catalog contains 335 photometric and 40 spectroscopic data sets. The photometric catalog reaches $3\sigma$ depths of $\gtrsim 24-27$ mag and $\gtrsim 23-26$ mag for the optical and near-infrared bands, respectively. We identify host galaxies for 84 bursts, in which the most robust associations make up 54% (49/90) of events, while only a small fraction, 6.7%, have inconclusive host associations. Based on new spectroscopy, we determine 17 host spectroscopic redshifts with a range of $z\approx 0.15-1.6$ and find that $\approx$ 25-44% of Swift short GRBs originate from $z>1$. We also present the galactocentric offset catalog for 83 short GRBs. Taking into account the large range of individual measurement uncertainties, we find a median of projected offset of $\approx 7.9$ kpc, for which the bursts with the most robust associations have a smaller median of $\approx 4.9$ kpc. Our catalog captures more high-redshift and low-luminosity hosts, and more highly-offset bursts than previously found, thereby diversifying the population of known short GRB hosts and properties. In terms of locations and host luminosities, the populations of short GRBs with and without detectable extended emission are statistically indistinguishable. This suggests that they arise from the same progenitors, or from multiple progenitors which form and evolve in similar environments. We present the stellar population properties of 69 short gamma-ray burst (GRB) host galaxies, representing the largest uniformly-modeled sample to-date. Using the Prospector stellar population inference code, we jointly fit photometry and/or spectroscopy of each host galaxy. We find a population median redshift of $z=0.64^{+0.83}_{-0.32}$ ($68\%$ confidence), including 10 new or revised photometric redshifts at $z\gtrsim1$. We further find a median mass-weighted age of $t_m=0.8^{+2.71}_{-0.53}$Gyr, stellar mass of $\log(M_*/M_\odot)=9.69^{+0.75}_{-0.65}$, star formation rate of SFR=$1.44^{+9.37}_{-1.35}M_\odot$yr$^{-1}$, stellar metallicity of $\log(Z_*/Z_\odot)=-0.38^{+0.44}_{-0.42}$, and dust attenuation of $A_V=0.43^{+0.85}_{-0.36}$~mag (68\% confidence). Overall, the majority of short GRB hosts are star-forming ($\approx84\%$), with small fractions that are either transitioning ($\approx6\%$) or quiescent ($\approx10\%$); however, we observe a much larger fraction ($\approx40\%$) of quiescent and transitioning hosts at $z\lesssim0.25$, commensurate with galaxy evolution. We find that short GRB hosts populate the star-forming main sequence of normal field galaxies, but do not include as many high-mass galaxies, implying that their binary neutron star (BNS) merger progenitors are dependent on a combination of host star formation and stellar mass. The distribution of ages and redshifts implies a broad delay-time distribution, with a fast-merging channel at $z>1$ and a decreased BNS formation efficiency at lower redshifts. If short GRB hosts are representative of BNS merger hosts within the horizon of current gravitational wave detectors, these results can inform future searches for electromagnetic counterparts. We present the results from our seven-year long broad-band X-ray observing campaign of SN\,2014C with \emph{Chandra} and \emph{NuSTAR}. These coordinated observations represent the first look at the evolution of a young extragalactic SN in the 0.3-80 keV energy range in the years after core collapse. We find that the spectroscopic metamorphosis of SN\,2014C from an ordinary type Ib SN into an interacting SN with copious hydrogen emission is accompanied by luminous X-rays reaching $L_x\approx 5.6\times10^{40}\, \rm{erg\,s^{-1}}$ (0.3--100 keV) at $\sim 1000$ days post explosion and declining as $L_x\propto t^{-1}$ afterwards. The broad-band X-ray spectrum is of thermal origin and shows clear evidence for cooling after peak, with $T(t)\approx 20 \,{\rm keV}(t/t_{\rm pk})^{-0.5}$. Soft X-rays of sub-keV energy suffer from large photoelectric absorption originating from the local SN environment with $NH_{\rm int}(t)\approx3\times 10^{22}(t/400 \,\rm{days})^{-1.4}\,\rm{cm^{-2}}$. We interpret these findings as the result of the interaction of the SN shock with a dense ($n\approx 10^{5}-10^{6}\,\rm{cm^{-3}}$), H-rich disk-like circumstellar medium (CSM) with inner radius $\sim2\times 10^{16}$ cm and extending to $\sim 10^{17}$ cm. Based on the declining $NH_{\rm int}(t)$ and X-ray luminosity evolution, we infer a CSM mass of $\sim(1.2\,f$--2.0$\sqrt{f}) \rm{M_{\odot}}$, where $f$ is the volume filling factor. Finally, we place SN\,2014C in the context of 119 core-collapse SNe with evidence for strong shock interaction with a thick circumstellar medium and we highlight the challenges that the current mass-loss theories (including wave-driven mass loss, binary interaction and line-driven winds) face when interpreting the wide dynamic ranges of CSM parameters inferred from observations., Comment: We recognize that the supernova within our sample is non-exhaustive, please email daniel_brethauer@berkeley.edu for suggestions of additional core-collapse interacting supernovae

We present cm-band and mm-band afterglow observations of five long-duration $\gamma$-ray bursts (GRBs; GRB 130131A, 130420B, 130609A, 131229A, 140713A) with dust-obscured optical afterglow emission, known as "dark" GRBs. We detect the radio afterglow of two of the dark GRBs (GRB 130131A and 140713A), along with a tentative detection of a third (GRB 131229A) with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA). Supplemented by three additional VLA-detected dark GRBs from the literature, we present uniform modeling of their broadband afterglows. We derive high line-of-sight dust extinctions of $A_{V, \rm GRB} \gtrsim 2.2 - 10.6~{\rm mag}$. Additionally, we model the host galaxies of the six bursts in our sample, and derive host galaxy dust extinctions of $A_{V, \rm Host} \approx 0.3-4.7~{\rm mag}$. Across all tested $\gamma$-ray (fluence and duration) and afterglow properties (energy scales, geometries and circumburst densities), we find dark GRBs to be representative of more typical unobscured long GRBs, except in fluence, for which observational biases and inconsistent classification may influence the dark GRB distribution. Additionally, we find that $A_{V, \rm GRB}$ is not related to a uniform distribution of dust throughout the host, nor to the extremely local environment of the burst, indicating that a larger scale patchy dust distribution is the cause of the high line-of-sight extinction. Since radio observations are invaluable to revealing heavily dust-obscured GRBs, we make predictions for the detection of radio emission from host star formation with the next generation VLA., Comment: 40 pages, 15 figures, submitted to ApJ

UVEX is a proposed medium class Explorer mission designed to provide crucial missing capabilities that will address objectives central to a broad range of modern astrophysics. The UVEX design has two co-aligned wide-field imagers operating in the FUV and NUV and a powerful broadband medium resolution spectrometer. In its two-year baseline mission, UVEX will perform a multi-cadence synoptic all-sky survey 50/100 times deeper than GALEX in the NUV/FUV, cadenced surveys of the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds, rapid target of opportunity followup, as well as spectroscopic followup of samples of stars and galaxies. The science program is built around three pillars. First, UVEX will explore the low-mass, low-metallicity galaxy frontier through imaging and spectroscopic surveys that will probe key aspects of the evolution of galaxies by understanding how star formation and stellar evolution at low metallicities affect the growth and evolution of low-metallicity, low-mass galaxies in the local universe. Such galaxies contain half the mass in the local universe, and are analogs for the first galaxies, but observed at distances that make them accessible to detailed study. Second, UVEX will explore the dynamic universe through time-domain surveys and prompt spectroscopic followup capability will probe the environments, energetics, and emission processes in the early aftermaths of gravitational wave-discovered compact object mergers, discover hot, fast UV transients, and diagnose the early stages of stellar explosions. Finally, UVEX will become a key community resource by leaving a large all-sky legacy data set, enabling a wide range of scientific studies and filling a gap in the new generation of wide-field, sensitive optical and infrared surveys provided by the Rubin, Euclid, and Roman observatories. The discovery of the electromagnetic counterpart to the binary neutron star merger GW170817 has opened the era of gravitational-wave multi-messenger astronomy. Rapid identification of the optical/infrared kilonova enabled a precise localization of the source, which paved the way to deep multi-wavelength follow-up and its myriad of related science results. Fully exploiting this new territory of exploration requires the acquisition of electromagnetic data from samples of neutron star mergers and other gravitational wave sources. After GW170817, the frontier is now to map the diversity of kilonova properties and provide more stringent constraints on the Hubble constant, and enable new tests of fundamental physics. The Vera C. Rubin Observatory's Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) can play a key role in this field in the 2020s, when an improved network of gravitational-wave detectors is expected to reach a sensitivity that will enable the discovery of a high rate of merger events involving neutron stars (about tens per year) out to distances of several hundred Mpc. We present deep X-ray and radio observations of the Fast Blue Optical Transient (FBOT) AT2020xnd/ZTF20acigmel at $z=0.2433$ from $13$d to $269$d after explosion. AT2020xnd belongs to the category of optically luminous FBOTs with similarities to the archetypal event AT2018cow. AT2020xnd shows luminous radio emission reaching $L_{\nu}\approx8\times10^{29}$ergs$^{-1}$Hz$^{-1}$ at 20GHz and $75$d post explosion, accompanied by luminous and rapidly fading soft X-ray emission peaking at $L_{X}\approx6\times10^{42}$ergs$^{-1}$. Interpreting the radio emission in the context of synchrotron radiation from the explosion's shock interaction with the environment we find that AT2020xnd launched a high-velocity outflow ($v\sim$0.1-0.2$c$) propagating into a dense circumstellar medium (effective $\dot M\approx10^{-3}M_{\rm{sol}}$yr$^{-1}$ for an assumed wind velocity of $v_w=1000$kms$^{-1}$). Similar to AT2018cow, the detected X-ray emission is in excess compared to the extrapolated synchrotron spectrum and constitutes a different emission component, possibly powered by accretion onto a newly formed black hole or neutron star. These properties make AT2020xnd a high-redshift analog to AT2018cow, and establish AT2020xnd as the fourth member of the class of optically-luminous FBOTs with luminous multi-wavelength counterparts., Comment: 21 pages, 6 figures, 6 tables. We present the complete set of {\it Hubble Space Telescope} imaging of the binary neutron star merger GW170817 and its optical counterpart AT 2017gfo. Including deep template imaging in F814W, F110W, F140W, and F160W at 3.4 years post-merger, we re-analyze the full light curve of AT 2017gfo across 12 bands from 5--1273 rest-frame days after merger. We obtain four new detections of the short $\gamma$-ray burst (GRB) 170817A afterglow from 109--170 rest-frame days post-merger. These detections are consistent with the previously observed $\beta=-0.6$ spectral index in the afterglow light curve with no evidence for spectral evolution. We also analyze our limits in the case of novel late-time optical and IR emission signatures, such as a kilonova afterglow or infrared dust echo, but find our limits are not constraining in these contexts. We use the new data to construct deep optical and infrared stacks, reaching limits of $M=-6.3$ to $-4.6$ mag, to analyze the local environment around AT 2017gfo and low surface brightness features in its host galaxy NGC 4993. We rule out the presence of any globular cluster at the position of AT 2017gfo to $2.3 \times 10^{4} L_{\odot}$, including those with the reddest $V-H$ colors. Finally, we analyze the substructure of NGC 4993 in deep residual imaging, and find shell features which extend up to 71.8\arcsec\ (14.2 kpc) from the center of the galaxy. We find that the shells have a cumulative stellar mass of $6.3\times10^{8} M_{\odot}$, roughly 2% the total stellar mass of NGC 4993, and mass-weighted ages of $>$3 Gyr. We conclude that it was unlikely the GW170817 progenitor system formed in the galaxy merger, which based on dynamical signatures and the stellar population in the shells mostly likely occurred 220--685 Myr ago., Comment: 21 pages, 9 figures, submitted to ApJ

Fast-rotating pulsars and magnetars have been suggested as the central engines of super-luminous supernovae (SLSNe) and fast radio bursts, and this scenario naturally predicts non-thermal synchrotron emission from their nascent pulsar wind nebulae (PWNe). We report results of high-frequency radio observations with ALMA and NOEMA for three SLSNe (SN 2015bn, SN 2016ard, and SN 2017egm), and present a detailed theoretical model to calculate non-thermal emission from PWNe with an age of about 1-3 yr. We find that the ALMA data disfavors a PWN model motivated by the Crab nebula for SN 2015bn and SN 2017egm, and argue that this tension can be resolved if the nebular magnetization is very high or very low. Such models can be tested by future MeV-GeV gamma-ray telescopes such as AMEGO., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, 2 tables

The light curve diversity of hydrogen-poor superluminous supernovae (SLSNe) has kept open the possibility that multiple power sources account for the population. Specifically, pair-instability explosions (PISNe), which produce large masses of $^{56}$Ni, have been argued as the origin of some slowly-evolving SLSNe. Here we present detailed observations of SN 2016inl (=PS16fgt), a slowly-evolving SLSN at $z=0.3057$, whose unusually red spectrum matches PS1-14bj, a SLSN with an exceptionally long rise time consistent with a PISN. Ground-based and Hubble Space Telescope data, spanning about 800 rest-frame days, reveal a significant light curve flattening, similar to that seen in SN 2015bn, and much slower than the decline rate expected from radioactive decay of $^{56}$Co. We therefore conclude that despite its slow evolution, SN 2016inl is inconsistent with a PISN. Instead, the light curve evolution matches the expected power-law spin-down of a magnetar central engine, but with a shallower power law ($L\propto t^{-2.8}$) compared to that in SN 2015bn, indicating a possible difference in the $\gamma$-ray opacity between the two events. Analytical modeling indicates typical magnetar engine parameters, but one of the highest ejecta masses ($\approx 20$ M$_{\odot}$) inferred for a SLSN. We describe the first observations of the same celestial object with gravitational waves and light. * GW170817 was the first detection of a neutron star merger with gravitational waves. * The detection of a spatially coincident weak burst of $\gamma$-rays (GRB 170817A) 1.7 s after the merger constituted the first electromagnetic detection of a gravitational wave source and established a connection between at least some cosmic short gamma-ray bursts (SGRBs) and binary neutron star mergers. * A fast-evolving optical and near-infrared transient (AT 2017gfo) associated with the event can be interpreted as resulting from the ejection of $\sim$0.05 M$_{\odot}$ of material enriched in r-process elements, finally establishing binary neutron star mergers as at least one source of r-process nucleosynthesis. * Radio and X-ray observations revealed a long-rising source that peaked $\sim$160 d after the merger. Combined with the apparent superluminal motion of the associated VLBI source, these observations show that the merger produced a relativistic structured jet whose core was oriented $\approx$ 20 deg from the line of sight and with properties similar to SGRBs. The jet structure likely results from the jet interaction with the merger ejecta. * The electromagnetic and gravitational wave information can be combined to produce constraints on the expansion rate of the universe and the equation of state of dense nuclear matter. The classification of supernovae (SNe) and its impact on our understanding of the explosion physics and progenitors have traditionally been based on the presence or absence of certain spectral features. However, current and upcoming wide-field time-domain surveys have increased the transient discovery rate far beyond our capacity to obtain even a single spectrum of each new event. We must therefore rely heavily on photometric classification, connecting SN light curves back to their spectroscopically defined classes. Here we present Superphot, an open-source Python implementation of the machine-learning classification algorithm of Villar et al., and apply it to 2315 previously unclassified transients from the Pan-STARRS1 Medium Deep Survey for which we obtained spectroscopic host-galaxy redshifts. Our classifier achieves an overall accuracy of 82%, with completenesses and purities of >80% for the best classes (SNe Ia and superluminous SNe). For the worst performing SN class (SNe Ibc), the completeness and purity fall to 37% and 21%, respectively. Our classifier provides 1257 newly classified SNe Ia, 521 SNe II, 298 SNe Ibc, 181 SNe IIn, and 58 SLSNe. Automated classification of supernovae (SNe) based on optical photometric light curve information is essential in the upcoming era of wide-field time domain surveys, such as the Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) conducted by the Rubin Observatory. Photometric classification can enable real-time identification of interesting events for extended multi-wavelength follow-up, as well as archival population studies. Here we present the complete sample of 5,243 "SN-like" light curves (in griz) from the Pan-STARRS1 Medium-Deep Survey (PS1-MDS). The PS1-MDS is similar to the planned LSST Wide-Fast-Deep survey in terms of cadence, filters and depth, making this a useful training set for the community. Using this dataset, we train a novel semi-supervised machine learning algorithm to photometrically classify 2,315 new SN-like light curves with host galaxy spectroscopic redshifts. Our algorithm consists of a random forest supervised classification step and a novel unsupervised step in which we introduce a recurrent autoencoder neural network (RAENN). Our final pipeline, dubbed SuperRAENN, has an accuracy of 87% across five SN classes (Type Ia, Ibc, II, IIn, SLSN-I). We find the highest accuracy rates for Type Ia SNe and SLSNe and the lowest for Type Ibc SNe. Our complete spectroscopically- and photometrically-classified samples break down into: 62.0% Type Ia (1839 objects), 19.8% Type II (553 objects), 4.8% Type IIn (136 objects), 11.7% Type Ibc (291 objects), and 1.6% Type I SLSNe (54 objects). We present optical observations of the Swift short-duration gamma-ray burst (GRB) GRB 161104A and its host galaxy at $z=0.793 \pm 0.003$. We model the multiband photometry and spectroscopy with the stellar population inference code Prospector, and explore the posterior using nested sampling. We find that the mass-weighted age $t_m = 2.12^{+0.23}_{-0.21}$~Gyr, stellar mass $\log{(M/M_\odot)} = 10.21 \pm 0.04$, metallicity $\log{(Z/Z_\odot)} = 0.08^{+0.05}_{-0.06}$, dust extinction $A_V = 0.08^{+0.08}_{-0.05}$ mag, and the star formation rate $\text{SFR} = 9.9 \times 10^{-2} M_\odot$~yr$^{-1}$. These properties, along with a prominent 4000 Angstrom break and optical absorption lines classify this host as an early-type, quiescent galaxy. Using Dark Energy Survey galaxy catalogues, we demonstrate that the host of GRB 161104A resides on the outskirts of a galaxy cluster at $z\approx 0.8$, situated $\approx 1$ Mpc from the likely brightest cluster galaxy. We also present new modeling for 20 additional short GRB hosts ($\approx33\%$ of which are early-type galaxies), finding population medians of $\log(M/M_\odot) = 9.94^{+0.88}_{-0.98}$ and $t_m = 1.07^{+1.98}_{-0.67}$~Gyr ($68\%$ confidence). We further find that the host of GRB 161104A is more distant, less massive, and younger than the four other short GRB hosts known to be associated with galaxy clusters. Cluster short GRBs have faint afterglows, in the lower $\approx 11\%$ ($\approx 30\%$) of observed X-ray (optical) luminosities. We place a lower limit on the fraction of short GRBs in galaxy clusters versus those in the field of $\approx 5-13\%$, consistent with the fraction of stellar mass $\approx 10-20\%$ in galaxy clusters at redshifts $0.1 \leq z \leq 0.8$., Comment: 20 pages, 9 figures, ApJ: Vol. 904, No. 1

The interaction of a supernova with a circumstellar medium (CSM) can dramatically increase the emitted luminosity by converting kinetic energy to thermal energy. In 'superluminous' supernovae (SLSNe) of Type IIn -- named for narrow hydrogen lines in their spectra -- the integrated emission can reach $\sim 10^{51}$ erg, attainable by thermalising most of the kinetic energy of a conventional SN. A few transients in the centres of active galaxies have shown similar spectra and even larger energies, but are difficult to distinguish from accretion onto the supermassive black hole. Here we present a new event, SN2016aps, offset from the centre of a low-mass galaxy, that radiated $\gtrsim 5 \times 10^{51}$ erg, necessitating a hyper-energetic supernova explosion. We find a total (SN ejecta $+$ CSM) mass likely exceeding 50-100 M$_\odot$, with energy $\gtrsim 10^{52}$ erg, consistent with some models of pair-instability supernovae (PISNe) or pulsational PISNe -- theoretically-predicted thermonuclear explosions from helium cores $>50$ M$_\odot$. Independent of the explosion mechanism, this event demonstrates the existence of extremely energetic stellar explosions, detectable at very high redshifts, and provides insight into dense CSM formation in the most massive stars., Comment: Published in Nature Astronomy, 13 April 2020

AT 2018hyz (=ASASSN-18zj) is a tidal disruption event (TDE) located in the nucleus of a quiescent E+A galaxy at a redshift of $z = 0.04573$, first detected by the All-Sky Automated Survey for Supernovae (ASAS-SN). We present optical+UV photometry of the transient, as well as an X-ray spectrum and radio upper limits. The bolometric light curve of AT 2018hyz is comparable to other known TDEs and declines at a rate consistent with a $t^{-5/3}$ at early times, emitting a total radiated energy of $E = 9\times10^{50}$ erg. An excess bump appears in the UV light curve about 50 days after bolometric peak, followed by a flattening beyond 250 days. The light curve shows an excess bump in the UV about 50 days after bolometric peak lasting for at least 100 days, which may be related to an outflow. We detect a constant X-ray source present for at least 86 days. The X-ray spectrum shows a total unabsorbed flux of $\sim 4\times10^{-14}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ and is best fit by a blackbody plus power-law model with a photon index of $\Gamma = 0.8$. A thermal X-ray model is unable to account for photons $> 1$ keV, while the radio non-detection favors inverse-Compton scattering rather than a jet for the non-thermal component. We model the optical and UV light curves using the Modular Open-Source Fitter for Transients (MOSFiT) and find a best fit for a black hole of $5.2\times10^6$ M$_\odot$ partially disrupting a $0.1$ M$_\odot$ star (stripping a mass of $\sim 0.01$ M$_\odot$ for the inferred impact parameter, $\beta=0.6$). The low optical depth implied by the small debris mass may explain how we are able to see hydrogen emission with disk-like line profiles in the spectra of AT 2018hyz (see our companion paper, Short et al.~2020)., Comment: 10 pages, 10 figures, published in MNRAS

We present comprehensive multiwavelength radio to X-ray observations of GRB 181201A spanning from $\approx150$ s to $\approx163$ days after the burst, comprising the first joint ALMA-VLA-GMRT observations of a gamma-ray burst (GRB) afterglow. The radio and mm-band data reveal a distinct signature at $\approx3.9$ days, which we interpret as reverse shock (RS) emission. Our observations present the first time that a single radio-frequency spectral energy distribution can be decomposed directly into RS and forward shock (FS) components. We perform detailed modeling of the full multiwavelength data set, using Markov Chain Monte Carlo sampling to construct the joint posterior density function of the underlying physical parameters describing the RS and FS synchrotron emission. We uncover and account for all degeneracies in the model parameters. The joint RS-FS modeling reveals a weakly magnetized ($\sigma\approx3\times10^{-3}$), mildly relativistic RS, from which we derive an initial bulk Lorentz factor of $\Gamma_0\approx103$ for the GRB jet. Our results support the hypothesis that low-density environments are conducive to the observability of RS emission. We compare our observations to other events with strong RS detections, and find a likely observational bias selecting for longer lasting, non-relativistic reverse shocks. Whether supernovae are a significant source of dust has been a long-standing debate. The large quantities of dust observed in high-redshift galaxies raise a fundamental question as to the origin of dust in the Universe since stars cannot have evolved to the AGB dust-producing phase in high-redshift galaxies. In contrast, supernovae occur within several millions of years after the onset of star formation. We present optical photometry and spectroscopy of SN 2016iet, an unprecedented Type I supernova (SN) at $z=0.0676$ with no obvious analog in the existing literature. The peculiar light curve has two roughly equal brightness peaks ($\approx -19$ mag) separated by 100 days, and a subsequent slow decline by 5 mag in 650 rest-frame days. The spectra are dominated by emission lines of calcium and oxygen, with a width of only $3400$ km s$^{-1}$, superposed on a strong blue continuum in the first year, and with a large ratio of $L_{\rm [Ca\,II]}/L_{\rm [O\,I]}\approx 4$ at late times. There is no clear evidence for hydrogen or helium associated with the SN at any phase. We model the light curves with several potential energy sources: radioactive decay, central engine, and circumstellar medium (CSM) interaction. Regardless of the model, the inferred progenitor mass near the end of its life (i.e., CO core mass) is $\gtrsim 55$ M$_\odot$ and up to $120$ M$_\odot$, placing the event in the regime of pulsational pair instability supernovae (PPISNe) or pair instability supernovae (PISNe). The models of CSM interaction provide the most consistent explanation for the light curves and spectra, and require a CSM mass of $\approx 35$ M$_\odot$ ejected in the final decade before explosion. We further find that SN 2016iet is located at an unusually large offset ($16.5$ kpc) from its low metallicity dwarf host galaxy ($Z\approx 0.1$ Z$_\odot$, $M\approx 10^{8.5}$ M$_\odot$), supporting the PPISN/PISN interpretation. In the final spectrum, we detect narrow H$\alpha$ emission at the SN location, likely due to a dim underlying galaxy host or an H II region. Despite the overall consistency of the SN and its unusual environment with PPISNe and PISNe, we find that the inferred properties of SN\,2016iet challenge existing models of such events., Comment: 26 Pages, 17 Figures, Submitted to ApJ

The Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) will open a discovery frontier for faint and fast transients with its ability to detect variable flux components down to $\sim$24.5 mag in a $\sim$30 second exposure. Spectroscopic follow-up of such phenomena - which are necessary for understanding the physics of stellar explosions - can require a rapid response and several hours with a 8-10m telescope, making it both expensive and difficult to acquire. The future Extremely Large Telescopes (ELTs) would be able to provide not only spectroscopy but capabilities such as spectropolarimetry and high-resolution diffraction-limited imaging that would contribute to future advances in our physical understanding of stellar explosions. In this white paper we focus on several specific scientific impacts in the field of explosive transient astrophysics that will be generated by the combination of LSST's discovery abilities and ELTs' follow-up capacities. First, we map the uncharted frontier of discovery phase-space in terms of intrinsic luminosity and timescales for explosive transients, where we expect the unexpected. We then focus on six areas with open science questions for known transients: the progenitors of thermonuclear supernovae (SNe), mass loss prior to core collapse, asymmetry in stellar explosions, light echoes, high-$z$ transients, and strongly lensed SNe. The field of time-domain astrophysics has entered the era of Multi-messenger Astronomy (MMA). One key science goal for the next decade (and beyond) will be to characterize gravitational wave (GW) and neutrino sources using the next generation of Extremely Large Telescopes (ELTs). These studies will have a broad impact across astrophysics, informing our knowledge of the production and enrichment history of the heaviest chemical elements, constrain the dense matter equation of state, provide independent constraints on cosmology, increase our understanding of particle acceleration in shocks and jets, and study the lives of black holes in the universe. Future GW detectors will greatly improve their sensitivity during the coming decade, as will near-infrared telescopes capable of independently finding kilonovae from neutron star mergers. However, the electromagnetic counterparts to high-frequency (LIGO/Virgo band) GW sources will be distant and faint and thus demand ELT capabilities for characterization. Astrophysical transients have been observed for millennia and have shaped our most basic assumptions about the Universe. In the last century, systematic searches have grown from detecting handfuls of transients per year to over 7000 in 2018 alone. As these searches have matured, we have discovered both large samples of "normal" classes and new, rare classes. Recently, a transient was the first object observed in both gravitational waves and light. Ground-based observatories, including LSST, will discover thousands of transients in the optical, but these facilities will not provide the high-fidelity near-infrared (NIR) photometry and high-resolution imaging of a space-based observatory. WFIRST can fill this gap. With its survey designed to measure the expansion history of the Universe with Type Ia supernovae, WFIRST will also discover and monitor thousands of other transients in the NIR, revealing the physics for these high-energy events. Small-scale GO programs, either as a supplement to the planned survey or as specific target-of-opportunity observations, would significantly expand the scope of transient science that can be studied with WFIRST., Comment: submitted to Astro2020

An ELT system with its large aperture and sensitive optical and near infrared imager spectrographs will make major contributions to the study of stars ripped apart by supermassive black holes., Comment: A Whitepaper Submitted to the Astro 2020 Decadal Survey Committee

We present a nuclear transient event, PS1-13cbe, that was first discovered in the Pan-STARRS1 survey in 2013. The outburst occurred in the nucleus of the galaxy SDSS J222153.87+003054.2 at $z = 0.12355$, which was classified as a Seyfert 2 in a pre-outburst archival Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) spectrum. PS1-13cbe showed the appearance of strong broad H$\alpha$ and H$\beta$ emission lines and a non-stellar continuum in a Magellan spectrum taken 57 days after the peak of the outburst that resembled the characteristics of a Seyfert 1. These broad lines were not present in the SDSS spectrum taken a decade earlier and faded away within two years, as observed in several late-time MDM spectra. We argue that the dramatic appearance and disappearance of the broad lines and factor of $\sim 8$ increase in the optical continuum is most likely caused by variability in the pre-existing accretion disk than a tidal disruption event, supernova, or variable obscuration. The timescale for the turn-on of the optical emission of $\sim 70$ days observed in this transient is among the shortest observed in a "changing look" active galactic nucleus., Comment: 15 pages, 11 figures, 2 tables

We present the complete sample of stripped-envelope supernova (SN) spectra observed by the Lick Observatory Supernova Search (LOSS) collaboration over the last three decades: 888 spectra of 302 SNe, 652 published here for the first time, with 384 spectra (of 92 SNe) having photometrically-determined phases. After correcting for redshift and Milky Way dust reddening and reevaluating the spectroscopic classifications for each SN, we construct mean spectra of the three major spectral subtypes (Types IIb, Ib, and Ic) binned by phase. We compare measures of line strengths and widths made from this sample to the results of previous efforts, confirming that O I {\lambda}7774 absorption is stronger and found at higher velocity in Type Ic SNe than in Types Ib or IIb SNe in the first 30 days after peak brightness, though the widths of nebular emission lines are consistent across subtypes. Understanding morphological types of galaxies is a key parameter for studying their formation and evolution. Neural networks that have been used previously for galaxy morphology classification have some disadvantages, such as not being invariant under rotation. In this work, we studied the performance of Capsule Network, a recently introduced neural network architecture that is rotationally invariant and spatially aware, on the task of galaxy morphology classification. We designed two evaluation scenarios based on the answers from the question tree in the Galaxy Zoo project. In the first scenario, we used Capsule Network for regression and predicted probabilities for all of the questions. In the second scenario, we chose the answer to the first morphology question that had the highest user agreement as the class of the object and trained a Capsule Network classifier, where we also reconstructed galaxy images. We achieved promising results in both of these scenarios. Automated approaches such as the one introduced here will greatly decrease the workload of astronomers and will play a critical role in the upcoming large sky surveys., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures

We present the first observations of a Type I superluminous supernova (SLSN) at $\gtrsim 1000$ days after maximum light. We observed SN 2015bn using the Hubble Space Telescope Advanced Camera for Surveys in the F475W, F625W and F775W filters at 721 days and 1068 days. SN 2015bn is clearly detected and resolved from its compact host, allowing reliable photometry. A galaxy template constructed from these data further enables us to isolate the SLSN flux in deep ground-based imaging. We measure a light curve decline rate at $>700$ days of $0.19 \pm 0.03$ mag (100 d)$^{-1}$, much shallower than the earlier evolution, and slower than previous SLSNe (at any phase) or the decay rate of $^{56}$Co. Neither additional radioactive isotopes nor a light echo can consistently account for the slow decline. A spectrum at 1083 days shows the same [O I] and [Ca II] lines as seen at $\sim300-400$ days, with no new features to indicate strong circumstellar interaction. Radio limits with the Very Large Array rule out an extended wind for mass-loss rates $10^{-2.7} \lesssim \dot{M}/v_{10} \lesssim 10^{-1.1}$ M$_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$ (where $v_{10}$ is the wind velocity in units of 10 km s$^{-1}$). The optical light curve is consistent with $L \propto t^{-4}$, which we show is expected for magnetar spin-down with inefficient trapping; furthermore, the evolution matches predictions from earlier magnetar model fits. The opacity to magnetar radiation is constrained at $\sim 0.01$ cm$^2$ g$^{-1}$, consistent with photon-matter pair-production over a broad $\sim$GeV-TeV range. This suggests the magnetar spectral energy distribution, and hence the 'missing energy' leaking from the ejecta, may peak in this range., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJL, updated to match accepted version

SN 2015bn is a nearby hydrogen-poor superluminous supernova (SLSN-I) that has been intensively observed in X-rays with the goal to detect the spin-down powered emission from a magnetar engine. The early-time UV/optical/infrared (UVOIR) data fit well to the magnetar model, but require leakage of energy at late times of $\lesssim 10^{43}$ erg s$^{-1}$, which is expected to be partially emitted in X-rays. Deep X-ray limits until $\sim$300 days after explosion revealed no X-ray emission. Here, we present the latest deep 0.3--10 keV X-ray limit at 805 days obtained with \textit{XMM-Newton}. We find $L_X < 10^{41}$ erg s$^{-1}$, with no direct evidence for central-engine powered emission. While the late-time optical data still follow the prediction of the magnetar model, the best-fit model to the bolometric light curve predicts that $\sim$97\% of the total input luminosity of the magnetar is escaping outside of the UVOIR bandpass at the time of observation. Our X-ray upper limit is $<$1.5\% of the input luminosity, strongly constraining the high-energy leakage, unless non-radiative losses are important. These deep X-ray observations identify a missing energy problem in SLSNe-I and we suggest future observations in hard X-rays and $\gamma$-rays for better constraints. We study the spectroscopic evolution of superluminous supernovae (SLSNe) later than 100 days after maximum light. We present new data for Gaia16apd and SN2017egm, and analyse these with a larger sample comprising 41 spectra of 12 events. The spectra become nebular within 2-4 $e$-folding times after light curve peak, with the rate of spectroscopic evolution correlated to the light curve timescale. Emission lines are identified with well-known transitions of oxygen, calcium, magnesium, sodium and iron. SLSNe are differentiated from other Type Ic SNe by a prominent O I $\lambda$7774 line and higher-ionisation states of oxygen. The iron-dominated region around 5000 \AA\ is more similar to broad-lined SNe Ic than to normal SNe Ic. Principal Component Analysis shows that 5 `eigenspectra' capture 75% of the variance, while a clustering analysis shows no clear evidence for multiple SLSN sub-classes. Line velocities are 5000--8000 km/s, and show stratification of the ejecta. O I $\lambda$7774 likely arises in a dense inner region that also produces calcium emission, while [O I] $\lambda$6300 comes from further out until 300--400 days. The luminosities of O I $\lambda$7774 and Ca II suggest significant clumping, in agreement with previous studies. Ratios of [Ca II]$\lambda$7300/[O I]$\lambda$6300 favour progenitors with relatively massive helium cores, likely $\gtrsim 6$ M$_\odot$, though more modelling is required here. SLSNe with broad light curves show the strongest [O I] $\lambda$6300, suggesting larger ejecta masses. SN 2008es is one of the rare cases of a Type II superluminous supernova (SLSN) showing no relatively narrow features in its early-time spectra, and therefore its powering mechanism is under debate between circumstellar interaction (CSI) and magnetar spin-down. Late-time data are required for better constraints. We present optical and near-infrared (NIR) photometry obtained from Gemini, Keck, and Palomar Observatories from 192 to 554 days after explosion. Only broad H$\alpha$ emission is detected in a Gemini spectrum at 288 days. The line profile exhibits red-wing attenuation relative to the early-time spectrum. In addition to the cooling SN photosphere, a NIR excess with blackbody temperature $\sim1500$ K and radius $\sim10^{16}$ cm is observed. This evidence supports dust condensation in the cool dense shell being responsible for the spectral evolution and NIR excess. We favour CSI, with $\sim2$--3 $\textrm{M}_\odot$ of circumstellar material (CSM) and $\sim$10--20 $\textrm{M}_\odot$ of ejecta, as the powering mechanism, which still dominates at our late-time epochs. Both models of uniform density and steady wind fit the data equally well, with an effective CSM radius $\sim 10^{15}$ cm, supporting the efficient conversion of shock energy to radiation by CSI. A low amount ($\lesssim 0.4$ $\textrm{M}_\odot$) of $^{56}$Ni is possible but cannot be verified yet, since the light curve is dominated by CSI. The magnetar spin-down powering mechanism cannot be ruled out, but is less favoured because it overpredicts the late-time fluxes and may be inconsistent with the presence of dust.

We present the first effort to aggregate, homogenize, and uniformly model the combined ultraviolet, optical, and near-infrared dataset for the electromagnetic counterpart of the binary neutron star merger GW170817. By assembling all of the available data from 18 different papers and 46 different instruments, we are able to identify and mitigate systematic offsets between individual datasets, and to identify clear outlying measurements, with the resulting pruned and adjusted dataset offering an opportunity to expand the study of the kilonova. The unified dataset includes 647 individual flux measurements, spanning 0.45 to 29.4 days post-merger, and thus has greater constraining power for physical models than any single dataset. We test a number of semi-analytical models and find that the data are well modeled with a three-component kilonova model: a "blue" lanthanide-poor component with Mej~0.020 Msol and vej~0.27c; an intermediate opacity "purple" component with Mej~0.047 Msol and vej~0.15c; and a "red" lanthanide-rich component with Mej~0.011 Msol and vej~0.14c. We further explore the possibility of ejecta asymmetry and its impact on the estimated parameters. From the inferred parameters we draw conclusions about the physical mechanisms responsible for the various ejecta components, the properties of the neutron stars, and, combined with an up-to-date merger rate, the implications for r-process enrichment via this channel.
