Bone tumors of the foot are an uncommon finding. Most tumors are found incidentally on imaging and are benign. Care must be taken although due to the aggressive nature of malignant bone tumors that can occur in the calcaneus. Malignant lesions will more commonly present with symptoms of pain and swelling. Often misdiagnosed as soft tissue injuries, it is critical to be able to diagnose and treat these lesions early. Imaging plays an important role with plain films and advanced imaging. Introduction: The tissues of the laryngeal region only rarely harbor primary cartilaginous lesions, and squamous cell carcinoma remains the most frequently encountered malignant tumor in this area., Materials and Methods: We reviewed the salient histological features of cartilaginous laryngeal lesions to provide differential diagnostics and guidelines for distinguishing the benign from the malignant ones., Results: Cartilaginous neoplasms of the larynx include chondroma and chondrosarcoma. Among the overarching group of all forms of laryngeal sarcoma, chondrosarcoma forms the most common entity in the larynx, followed by rhabdomyosarcoma. Cartilaginous tumors comprise about 0.1%-1% of all laryngeal neoplasms with chondrosarcomas being more frequently encountered than chondromas. Several neoplasms earlier reported as giant-cell tumors of the larynx would most likely, using current terminology, be classified as cases of undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma (previously known as malignant fibrous histiocytoma, giant-cell variant) or aneurysmal bone cyst., Conclusion: When true laryngeal sarcomas do exist, they may prove to be challenging lesions both for the pathologist and the treating clinician. The diagnostic problems are mainly a result of the infrequent exposure of clinicians and diagnosticians to these lesions.

We present the case of a 24-year-old man with a painful ring finger following minimal trauma during a handball game. The X-ray showed a pathological fracture of the proximal phalanx due to an enchondroma. Conservative treatment was initiated, consisting of cast immobilisation for 6 weeks. After 8 months of follow-up, the X-ray revealed that the bone marrow cavity was almost completely filled with bone tissue.

Background: Sufficient data on outcome of patients with clinically and radiologically aggressive enchondromas and atypical cartilaginous tumors (ACT) is lacking. We therefore analyzed both conservatively and surgically treated patients with lesions, which were not distinguishable between benign enchondroma and low-grade malignant ACT based upon clinical and radiologic appearance., Methods: The series included 228 consecutive cases with a follow-up > 24 months to assess radiological, histological, and clinical outcome including recurrences and complications. Pain, satisfaction, functional limitations, and the musculoskeletal tumor society (MSTS) score were evaluated to judge both function and emotional acceptance at final follow-up., Results: Follow-up took place at a mean of 82 (median 75) months. The 228 patients all had comparable clinical and radiological findings. Of these, 153 patients were treated conservatively, while the other 75 patients underwent intralesional curettage. Besides clinical and radiological aggressiveness, most lesions were histologically judged as benign enchondromas. 9 cases were determined to be ACT, while the remaining 7 cases had indeterminate histology. After surgery, three patients developed a recurrence, and a further seven had complications of which six were related to osteosynthesis. Both groups had excellent and almost equal MSTS scores of 96 and 97%, respectively, but significantly less functional limitations were found in the non-surgery group. Further sub-analyses were performed to reduce selection bias. Sub-analysis of histologically diagnosed enchondromas in the surgery group found more pain, less function, and worse MSTS score compared to the non-surgery group. Sub-analysis of smaller lesions (< 4.4 cm) did not show significant differences. In contrast, larger lesions displayed significantly worse results after surgery compared to conservative treatment (enchondromas > 4.4 cm: MSTS score: 94.0% versus 97.3%, p = 0.007; pain 2.3 versus 0.8, p = 0.001). The majority of lesions treated surgically was filled with polymethylmethacrylate bone-cement, while the remainder was filled with cancellous-bone, without significant difference in clinical outcome., Conclusion: Feasibility of intralesional curettage strategies for symptomatic benign to low-grade malignant chondrogenic tumors was supported. Surgery, however, did not prove superior compared to conservative clinical and radiological observation. Due to the low risk of transformation into higher-grade tumors and better functional results, more lesions might just be observed if continuous follow-up is assured.

Purpose: To describe the results of nonsurgical and surgical treatment of enchondromas of the distal phalanx of the hand., Methods: Eleven enchondromas of the distal phalanx were retrospectively reviewed. Five patients underwent surgery (curettage and autogenous cancellous bone graft from the iliac crest) and 6 patients were treated nonsurgically. Clinical records and radiographs were reviewed for each patient. We recorded complications and cosmetic and functional results. Radiographic healing in surgical patients was scored according to the classification of Tordai and to the criteria of Wilhelm and Feldmeier. The average follow-up of the nonsurgical and surgical cases was 45 and 62 months, respectively., Results: Eight patients were women. Average age at diagnosis was 40 years. Nine patients presented with a pathological fracture. The demographic characteristics of the surgical group and nonsurgical group were similar. Among the cases treated nonsurgically (6), 1 had 2 pathological fractures after diagnosis. At final follow-up, the average pain on a visual analog scale was 2.8. With the exception of 1 patient, the range of motion of the fingers was normal or minimally reduced. Among the surgical cases (5), there were no complications in the bone graft donor site, 2 patients developed infections in the operated finger, and no postoperative pathological fractures were found. At final follow-up, the average pain was 3.2. Joint mobility was normal in 3 patients. Postoperative radiological examination revealed complete bone healing in all patients (grade I in the Tordai classification). No local recurrence was seen. According to the criteria of Wilhelm and Feldmeier, there were 3 excellent, 1 good, and 1 satisfactory results in the surgical group, and 2 excellent, 3 good, and 1 satisfactory results in the nonsurgical group., Conclusions: Surgical and nonsurgical treatment in distal phalanx enchondromas appear to be associated with satisfactory results, although each has their own advantages and disadvantages., Type of Study/level of Evidence: Therapeutic IV., (Copyright © 2018 American Society for Surgery of the Hand. Introduction: Chondromyxoid fibrotherma (CMF) is a rare benign cartilage tumor that occurs more frequently in young males at the age of 20 to 30. It occurs more frequently on long bones, but rarely involves craniofacial bones., Case Presentation: This study mainly introduced a 30-year-old male with CMF of zygomatic bone. Single tumor excochleation was conducted initially. However, CMF reoccurred, and then the following steps were adopted: firstly, the tumor was extensively excised; secondly, in vitro tumor excochleation was conducted; thirdly, the excised tumor bone was placed in liquid nitrogen for 3 cycles of cryoablation; finally, the orthotopic transplantation was performed to reconstruct the zygomatic appearance, with satisfactory follow-up efficacy obtained., Conclusions: Orthotopic transplantation after tumorectomy and cryopreservation of tumor bone in liquid nitrogen could lead to excellent therapeutic efficacy and deserves to be widely applied in clinical practice in the treatment of a male patient with CMF of zygomatic bone, because it not only radically eliminates the tumor and kills tumor cells, but also provides bony skeleton for the growth of new bone, thus greatly promoting postoperative aesthetic degree and reducing the occurrence rates of complications.

Bone tumors are relatively rare in the foot and ankle region. Many of them present as cystic lesions on plain films. Due to the relative rarity of these lesions and the complex anatomy of the foot and ankle region, identification of such lesions is often delayed or they get misdiagnosed and mismanaged. Chondromas are benign tumors composed of mature hyaline cartilage (Bahnassy & Abdil-Khalik, 2009). Extraskeletal presentation of chondromas is extremely rare and mostly occurs in the soft tissues of the extremities, mainly the hands and feet (Bahnassy & Abdil-Khalik, 2009; Rapini et al, 2007). There are currently only 3 case reports in the literature of chondroma of the urinary bladder (Cho & Horvai, 2015; Reichard et al, 2014; Sloan & Rapoport, 1985). Primary osseous tumors of the chest wall are uncommon neoplasms. They occur in a wide variety of pathologic forms, most of which can be distinguished by unique radiologic appearance. Management of these tumors depends on the diagnosis and stage. Adequate surgical resection is critical in achieving the best outcomes for most of these tumors. Chemotherapy and radiation may have an adjuvant role. Purpose of this study was to evaluate the employment of MRI-guided Focused Ultrasound (MRgFUS) for treatment of intra-articular benign bone lesions as alternative to surgery, and to monitor the success of the treatment on CT and MRI images. From March 2011 to August 2013, 14 intra-articular benign bone lesions were treated with MRgFUS. All patients were studied by CT and MR imaging. Pain was measured using the visual analogue scale (VAS) before and after treatment (6 and 12 months). All patients in our series demonstrated regression in painful symptomatology during screening. A significant drop in the mean VAS pain score (from 7.8 to 0.6) was observed at 12-month follow-up, and pain medication was no longer needed after treatment. No complications were observed. Three diagnostic imaging signs were found suggesting absence of biological activity and confirming the clinical findings: calcification of the treated lesion, lack of contrast enhancement and disappearance of bone oedema around the lesions., Conclusion: the employment of MRgFUS is safe and effective in the treatment of intra-articular benign bone lesions. The clinical outcome is satisfactory, and the success of the treatment is confirmed by diagnostic imaging.

The purpose of this retrospective study was to compare the clinical and radiological outcomes of patients treated with different adjuvant methods after curettage for enchondromas of the hand. Sixty-two patients with enchondroma were treated with high-speed burring (29 patients) or alcohol instillation (33 patients) after curettage. The mean follow-up was 40.8 months. No significant differences in the visual analogue scale, Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand scores, total range of active motion, grip strength, and complete healing time were observed between the groups. The distribution of the results of the formula by Wilhelm and Feldmeier were not significantly different between the groups. No surgery-related complications, postoperative pathological fractures, or recurrence was found in either group. Enchondromas are benign bone tumours originating from cartilages. It is mainly discovered incidentally in radiographs or due to symptoms like pathological fracture or pain. Conservative treatment through regular check-up and surgical excision using curettage are the two major treatment methods for enchondromas. This review concludes that small localized asymptomatic lesions can be treated conservatively while most expanding or symptomatic lesions should be treated with simple curettage. Adjuvant treatments like high-speed burring or alcohol instillation are not recommended.

Introduction: Endobronchial hamartochondroma is a form of rare benign tumour. Compared to those that occur in the lung parenchyma, the endobronchial form can potentially be managed by relatively conservative treatment involving per-endoscopic resection., Comment: A 61-year-old patient had a dry cough and chest pain for 3 months. Their clinical examination was normal, but thoracic CT scan showed lingular collapse. Bronchoscopy revealed the presence of a multilobar tumour occluding the orifice of the lingula bronchus. Bronchial biopsies were consistent with the diagnosis of a hamartochondroma. Before the destruction of any of the left upper lobe parenchyma, the tumor was resected surgically and the patient had an uneventful postoperative course., Conclusion: Endobronchial hamartochondroma support must be rapid to avoid irreversible parenchymal consequences downstream obstruction involving an often mutilating surgery. Introduction: Cartilaginous tumours of the larynx are rare. They usually involve cricoid cartilage, less frequently thyroid cartilage and other cartilages. The most significant clinical manifestations are hoarseness, dyspnea, dysphagia or a neck mass. On physical examination, tumour is found as a bulge with intact mucosa or a tumour situated in a part of the larynx also with fixation. CT scanning is the mainstay of radiographic imaging. The histopathologic diagnosis is made after the surgical excision. Prognosis for survival is good. The recurrences occur very often, also with malignant transformation and require laryngectomy., Material: We presented 11 patients (including symptoms, involved cartilage, laryngoscopy examination, histopathologic diagnosis, treatment and the follow-up)., Results: 6 patients manifested hoarseness, 5 dyspnea, 3 dysphagia, 1 neck mass as the first symptom. In laryngoscopy a tumour with intact mucosa was situated in subglottis - 5 patients, in supraglottis - 2 patients and in half of the larynx with fixation - 4 patients. The majority of tumours involved the cricoid cartilage - in 9 cases, the rest arytenoid and epiglottic cartilage. The histopathology diagnosis were given after surgery, only in one case after biopsy. There were 7 patients with chondrosarcoma and four with chondroma. We did not observe lymph node or distant metastases. All patients were treated surgically. Follow-up of patients with chondrosarcoma were 5 to 17 years without recurrence. Background: A novel calcium sulfate-calcium phosphate composite injectable bone graft substitute has been approved by the FDA for filling bone defects in a nonweightbearing application based on preclinical studies. Its utility has not been documented in the literature., Questions/purposes: We therefore determined postoperative function and complications in patients with benign bone lesions treated with this bioceramic., Methods: We retrospectively reviewed all 56 patients with benign bone lesions treated with the bioceramic from 2006 to 2008. There were 29 male and 27 female patients with an average age of 17.6 years (range, 4-63 years). They were treated for the following diagnoses: unicameral bone cyst (13), aneurysmal bone cyst (10), nonossifying fibroma (eight), fibrous dysplasia (five), enchondroma (four), chondroblastoma (four), and other (12). We obtained a Musculoskeletal Tumor Society (MSTS) functional evaluation on all patients. The minimum followup was 26 months (average, 42 months; range, 26-57 months)., Results: The average MSTS score was 29 (range, 20-30). Most patients returned to normal function. There were three local recurrences, all of which were treated with repeat injection or curettage. Two patients had postoperative fractures treated in a closed manner. Two patients had wound complications, neither of which required removal of the graft material., Conclusion: Patients treated with this material reported high MSTS functional scores more than 24 months after operative intervention and experienced low complication rates. We believe the novel bioceramic to be a reasonable treatment option for benign bone lesions.

Ten consecutive patients with digital enchondroma were treated by curettage and calcium phosphate bone cement (CPC) injection under digital nerve block. Mean patient age at surgery was 39 years old (range, 26-54), and the mean follow-up period was 19 months (range, 12-31). Two patients had a pathologic fracture at the first visit. Active finger motion was allowed at three days postoperatively and all patients returned to work within four weeks of surgery. The surgical procedures were uneventful in all patients, and no complications were encountered during follow-up. The mean total arc of motion of the PIP joints and MP joints of the affected fingers was 93% of and 99%, respectively, of the arcs of the corresponding joints of the contralateral unaffected fingers at final follow-up. CPC injection is a good option for the treatment of enchondroma of the finger.

Hand chondroma is a particular cartilagineous tumour, being clinically benign, but morphologically malignant. This study investigates the expression of VEGF together with other growth factors and proliferation markers such as TGFβ2, Ki-67, TNF, FGF1, P53 in 8 cases of hand chondroma treated with courettage, in order to define the ethiopathogenesis of this tumour and the clinical significance of the resulting immunohistochemical profile, with particular respect to angiogenesis. VEGF was expressed in all cases; 5 cases were positive for TFGβ2 and 3 for PDGF. None of the other factors was expressed. On the basis of histologic results a specific model of tumour progression based on the indicators of angiogenesis could be related to hand tumours, in which VEGF expression should be the first stadium of the tumour aggressiveness, and the following PDGF, TGF 2 expression should be accompanied with a morphological outline worsening. Nevertheless the non constant expression of these indicators and the absent expression of proliferated indicators can explain the scant tendency to the relapse in presence of accurate curettage. It is important to remember that the cellular polymorphism typical of the cartilaginous tumours does not allow the application of an only oncogenesis model.

Chordomas are relatively rare tumors of bone. These primary malignant lesions occur throughout the spinal column and often show advanced growth at the time of diagnosis. Because such tumors are minimally responsive to radiation and chemotherapy, surgical resection is the mainstay of treatment. Patient survival and local control are associated with the ability to achieve wide surgical margins during excision. However, surgical morbidity may be substantial given the propensity for chordomas to abut or surround neural, vascular, and visceral structures. Thus, early recognition is essential, and treatment by a multidisciplinary team is ideal.

A 7-year-old male Belgian Shepherd dog was presented with sudden onset of lateral recumbency and tetraparesis. At the level of the third cervical vertebra, magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated an intrameningeal and intramedullary mass lesion. The animal was subsequently euthanatized. A necropsy revealed a semitranslucent solid mass infiltrating dorsal and ventral dura mater and the spinal cord. Histologic examination revealed a lobulated pleomorphic mass, mainly resembling undifferentiated cartilage interspersed by spindle-shaped and polygonal cells with highly vacuolated cytoplasm (physaliphorous cells). Immunohistochemistry of the tumor cells demonstrated dual expression of vimentin and cytokeratin. Based on the histologic and immunohistochemical results, the diagnosis of a chordoma with chondromatous component was made.

The ectomesenchymal chondromyxoid tumor is a relatively recently described neoplasm that appears to involve uniquely the oral cavity, particularly the tongue. Thirty well-accepted cases have been reported since the initial description of this lesion in 1995. While a wide age range (9-78 years) has been documented, most of these tumors are diagnosed from the third to sixth decades of life. No sex predilection is seen. The size of the neoplasm is typically <2 cm, and most affect the anterior dorsal tongue. The duration of the lesion was difficult to gauge, probably due to the asymptomatic nature of the process. Some tumors, however, were well documented to have been present for as long as 10-20 years. Histopathologically, the ectomesenchymal chondromyxoid tumor is characterized by a well circumscribed, but unencapsulated, lobular growth pattern. Varying degrees of cellularity are noted, with the lesional cells often set in a myxoid, chondroid or hyalinized background. Immunohistochemical studies reveal positivity of the lesional cells for antibodies directed against glial fibrillary acidic protein, cytokeratins, S-100 protein and CD-57 in the majority of tumors. Treatment consists of conservative surgical excision, and while recurrence is possible, it has been noted in <10% of reported cases.

Purpose: To report a case of orbital chordoma, emphasizing the clinical, operative, and histopathologic findings, and to review similar English-language reports., Methods: This is a single case report with histopathologic correlation. Search of the English-language literature and review of referenced citations was performed., Results: After treatment with resection and proton beam radiation, our patient is alive, without recurrence at 3-year follow-up. Biopsy of the recurrent tumor was consistent with chordoma. The original biopsy had S100 and pancytokeratin-positive tumor cells, with abundant clear to eosinophilic cytoplasm. Focal EMA positivity was present. Literature review identified 14 additional cases., Conclusion: Orbital chordoma is rare. Extraocular motility disturbances occur solely with intracranial lesions as well as those extending into the orbit, but globe displacement is the most common sign of orbital involvement. This tumor often recurs in the path of previous resection. Diagnosis is confirmed by distinctive histopathologic features and positive staining for S100, pancytokeratin, and EMA. Treatment and outcome analysis of orbital chordoma is difficult due to its rarity and lack of reported follow-up and may need to be extrapolated from reported skull base cases.

Primary malignant bone tumours are rare. The annual incidence of these tumours is 10 per 1 million. Nearly 30% of the primary malignant bone tumours are malignant cartilage tumours. The frequency of benign cartilage tumours cannot be definitely estimated because these tumours are normally clinically inapparent and therefore often diagnosed as an incidental finding. The cartilage tumours appear as benign lesions (e.g. chondroma), as borderline tumours (proliferative chondroma vs grade I chondrosarcoma) or as highly malignant chondrosarcoma (e.g. dedifferentiated chondrosarcoma). Commensurate with the different clinical and oncological manifestations of the cartilage tumours, there are wide differences in the treatment and clinical course of the individual tumour. This article discusses the problems in the diagnosis and treatment of cartilage tumours from an orthopaedic point of view.

The treatment of enchondroma in long tubular bones has been the subject of controversial discussions for several years. Whereas secondary malignancy is very rare when the enchondroma is located in a hand, a position near to the trunk represents a high risk of transformation into a chondrosarcoma. For an enchondroma in long tubular bones, authors recommend a whole variety of approaches ranging from regular controls to radical en bloc resection. Between 1989 and 2001 we followed a concept of intralesional resection and cement filling. After an interval without recurrences, the cement was extracted and replaced by a spongiosaplasty. Of 16 patients 12.5% suffered from an intralesional fracture in the course of the treatment, and 25% complained of persistent pain and loss of function after surgery. These complications led us to change our concept. Though there were two cases of secondary transformation into chondrosarcoma G1, we now prefer to keep the patients under close clinical and radiological control without performing surgery.

The abnormal dilatation of saccules in direct communication with the laryngeal lumen is termed laryngocele. A simple laryngocele is an air-filled dilatation of the saccule and is mostly asymptomatic. When the neck of the laryngocele is obstructed, the laryngocele becomes filled with mucus. If a mucus-filled laryngocele is infected, it is called a laryngopyocele. The etiology of laryngoceles is not well understood. However, there is an association between laryngoceles and carcinoma of the supraglottic larynx. The main reasons are probably obstruction and mucosal retention of the saccule, increasing intralaryngeal pressure due to airway obstruction or abnormal contraction of the involved laryngeal muscles due to tumoral spreading. We present a patient with laryngopyocele that arose because of a laryngeal chondroma.

Interventional therapeutic methods are presented in Carney triad, which is a syndrome defined as the simultaneous presence of gastric leiomyosarcoma, extra-adrenal paraganglioma, and pulmonary chondroma. The paragangliomas in the carotid bifurcation and the mediastinum were successfully treated via transarterial embolization with particles. Three intrapulmonary chondromas were ablated using MRI-guided laser-induced thermotherapy (LITT) after previous devascularization via transvenous pulmonary particle embolization. In summary, interventional techniques could be a therapeutic option in patients suffering from Carney triad.

Carney triad is a rare syndrome, with only 20 complete cases reported. We report a 36-year-old white woman with complete Carney triad, including metastatic gastric stromal tumor (GIST), pulmonary chondroma, and nonfunctioning extra-adrenal paraganglioma. Immunohistochemistry was positive for CD34 and CD117 (c-kit) in the GIST, and positive for chromogranin and CD117 in the paraganglioma. Ultrastructural studies demonstrated skeinoid fibers in the GIST. To our knowledge, this is the 21st complete Carney triad case reported and the first report of dual expression CD117 in both GIST and paraganglioma, a finding with intriguing pathogenetic implications related to the organization of the autonomic nervous system.

Primary bone tumors of the hand and wrist are unusual but if present are frequently chondrogenic in origin. Enchondroma is the most common primary bone tumor of the hand and can be treated by curettage and bone grafting. Chondrosarcoma is rare and most likely the result of malignant degeneration of a pre-existing lesion. Wide en bloc resection is appropriate for chondrosarcoma and typically involves ray resection or partial hand amputation.

Intraosseous cartilage tumors are commonly encountered by orthopaedic surgeons during evaluation of a patient for undetermined pain; however, the possibility of missing a malignancy during examination is cause for concern. Surgery for enchondromas is not generally necessary but when clinical and radiographic features suggest a potential chondrosarcoma, prompt referral is necessary. Chondrosarcoma almost always occurs in adults. Patients usually present with pain and have characteristic findings on staging studies. Lucencies developing within the calcification, periosteal reactions, and a soft-tissue mass all are characteristic features of chondrosarcoma. Biopsies are not typically indicated because of the histologic similarity of benign and malignant cartilage lesions.

The proper treatment of cartilaginous tumors is dependent on the clinicopathologic and radiologic findings. Enchondroma is a benign tumor that is usually asymptomatic and thus should be treated nonoperatively. Symptomatic enchondromas are often treated by intralesional excision. Intramedullary low-grade chondrosarcoma is a malignant tumor that is usually painful. The treatment of low-grade chondrosarcoma may range from intralesional excision with or without adjuvant therapy to wide excision. Although intralesional excisions have a higher bone and joint preservation rate than wide excisions, they may be associated with a higher local recurrence rate. Intermediate- and high-grade chondrosarcomas are treated with wide excisions. The treatment of these cartilaginous lesions should involve a multidisciplinary team including a musculoskeletal surgeon, a radiologist, and a pathologist.

Objective: To investigate the natural history of the triad of gastric stromal sarcoma, pulmonary chondroma, and extra-adrenal paraganglioma, a rare syndrome of unknown cause primarily affecting young women., Methods: Mayo Clinic records, the world literature, and the author's files were searched for patients with all or 2 of the 3 tumors., Results: Seventy-nine patients, 67 women and 12 men, were identified, 17 (22%) with the 3 tumors and 62 (78%) with 2 tumors. Forty-two (53%) had gastric and pulmonary tumors, the most common combination. The longest interval between detection of the first and second components was 26 years (mean, 8.4 years; median, 6 years). Follow-up ranged from 1 year to 49 years (mean, 20.6 years; median, 20 years). Sixty-four patients (81%) were alive, 19 (24%) apparently free of disease and 45 (57%) with residual or metastatic tumors. Thirty-two patients (41%) had had 1 or more local recurrences of the gastric sarcoma; the longest interval to first recurrence was 36 years. Twenty-one survivors (27%) had hepatic metastatic gastric sarcoma with follow-up of 1 year to 25 years (mean, 9.3 years; median, 7 years). Fifteen patients (19%) were dead, 10 (13%) of whom died of the disorder. Ten patients (13%) had nonfunctioning adrenocortical tumors. Two patients each had a sibling with 1 component of the triad., Conclusions: The triad is a chronic, persistent, and indolent disease. Benign adrenocortical tumors are a component of the condition. The disorder may be familial.

The case of a 76 year old man with a progressive upper respiratory distress due to a chondroma of the trachea is reported which necessitated a segmental tracheal resection with end-to-end anastomosis and restoration of the initial tracheal lumen. This case report is illustrative of a rare benign disease (10 cases described till today) originating from the cartilaginous rings of the trachea. The tumor usually appears as an upper airway obstructing syndrome and endoscopy is essential for establishing the diagnosis. Laser resection can be recommended for the treatment of limited lesions, whereas tracheal resection with end-to-end anastomosis is recommended for more advanced chondroma because it is prone to local recurrence and potentially exposed to malignant transformation into chondrosarcoma.

We reviewed 845 cases of benign and 356 cases of malignant cartilaginous tumors from a total of 3067 primary bone tumors in our database. Benign cartilaginous lesions are unique because the epiphyseal plate has been implicated in the etiology of osteochondroma, enchondroma (single or multiple), periosteal chondromas and chondroblastoma. In the first part of this paper, we will review important clinical, radiologic and histologic features of intramedullary cartilaginous lesions in an attempt to support theories related to anatomic considerations and pathogenesis.

The association of gastric leiomyoblastomas, pulmonary chondromas and extra-adrenal paragangliomas has been called "Carney's Triad" since 1977. It is incomplete when only two of these lesions are present. 42 cases has been published. We report observations of two young women with gastric leiomyoblastomas and pulmonary chondromas; one of them also had an adrenocortical adenoma.

This article presents 6 cases of recurrent sacro-coccygeal tumor with analysis of the causes of recurrence, operational technique for second-time operation and concomitant treatment. It is suggested that combined abdominal and sacro-coccygeal approaches be used to excise maximal mass of the tumor, surrounding affected tissues be curetted out and the space be filled up with adriamycin-bone-cement to destroy remaining tumor cells and to strengthen the stability of pelvis. Besides, the patients should be subject to supersegregation radiotherapy in order to minimize the possibility of recurrence.

Squamous cell carcinoma was the most common neoplasm found in a review of case records of 21 cats with histopathologically confirmed orbital neoplasms. Other neoplasms found were lymphosarcoma, undifferentiated carcinoma, malignant melanoma, adenocarcinoma, fibrosarcoma, chondroma, and hemangiosarcoma. Three (14%) neoplasms were primary, 15 (71%) were secondary, invading the orbit from adjacent tissues, and 3 (14%) were a manifestation of multicentric disease. The most common clinical sign was exophthalmia, followed by chronic epiphora, enophthalmia, and strabismus. Mean survival time after diagnosis was 1.9 months. Ten cats were euthanatized at the time of diagnosis because of extensive disease. Mean survival time of the other 11 cats was 4.3 months. Skull radiography was helpful in diagnosing orbital neoplasms in 8 of 11 cats that had invasion of the orbit by adjacent neoplasms.

The article reports on seven patients with a histologically established chondromatosis of the joints. The aetiology, diagnosis, pathologico-anatomic findings and treatment of this rare joint disease are discussed. The case history of a patient serves to illustrate how a benign chondromatosis can undergo malignant degeneration.

A case of chondromyxoid fibroma of the anterior maxilla is presented. The light and electron microscopic appearances of this tumor are described. A review of chondromyxoid fibromas of the jaws is performed, with a discussion of the appropriate therapy.

Bronchial chondromas are usually treated by thoracotomy and resection of a lung segment or lung lobe. This case report describes the endobronchial resection of a bronchial chondroma by flexible fiberoptic bronchoscopy in a 61-year-old man.

This report presents an initial clinical experience with arterial embolization as adjuvent therapy in the surgical treatment of selected benign primary bone tumors in childhood. Embolization was dramatically effective in 4 children with spinal or pelvic vascular tumors. This technique facilitated local surgical resection and/or curettage. No child had evidence of local recurrence. Three of the 4 children had spinal cord or nerve root compression resulting in various degrees of paralysis prior to surgery. All treated patients had complete recovery from their paralysis. There were no complications of embolization or surgery. The treatment of benign primary bone tumors of the spine and pelvis is immeasurably improved by the adjuvant arterial embolization procedure. The immediate surgical treatment of these difficult tumors now becomes feasible with the greatly diminished blood flow resulting from embolization.

A case of osteochondroma of the mandibular condyle has been presented. The facial and occlusal deformities produced by the tumor are described. After the surgical treatment and concomitant orthodontic treatment, satisfactory occlusion and facial contour were established.

Two cases of solitary cartilaginous bone tumours are presented. They were slow growing and the radiographs never showed any certain evidence of malignancy. The writers emphasize the difficulties in planning treatment, in view of the tendency towards malignancy shown by these tumours.
