This paper uses digital and technologically enhanced learning processes to present the millennial generation’s E-learning systems in mathematics courses, attitudes, and academic performance. It aims to determine the e-learning systems of college students in their mathematics classes and their effects on their academic performance. This study used qualitative and quantitative methods and descriptive–correlational and descriptive-comparative research methods involving 72 college students taking p mathematics courses. The results show that regarding e-learning materials, the majority strongly agreed with preferred using Technologies to solve problems using application software, web assignments submitted on yahoo chat, emails, messengers, and solving problems in class using a calculator’s math lab and math way. Millennial e-learners prefer Online based learning, Video conferencing, yahoo groups, group chats, messengers’ groups, video calls, emails, Twitter, Instagram, Math software, and online chat. Students’ academic performance improved when the e-learning system was used, and it was found that their academic grades differed significantly when e-learning systems over traditional learning systems. The E-learning style is recommended in teaching mathematics courses.

International audience; Primary angle closure glaucoma (PACG) is a major cause of blindness worldwide. We conducted a genome-wide association study (GWAS) followed by replication in a combined total of 10,503 PACG cases and 29,567 controls drawn from 24 countries across Asia, Australia, Europe, North America, and South America. We observed significant evidence of disease association at five new genetic loci upon meta-analysis of all patient collections. These loci are at EPDR1 rs3816415 (odds ratio (OR) = 1.24, P = 5.94 × 10(-15)), CHAT rs1258267 (OR = 1.22, P = 2.85 × 10(-16)), GLIS3 rs736893 (OR = 1.18, P = 1.43 × 10(-14)), FERMT2 rs7494379 (OR = 1.14, P = 3.43 × 10(-11)), and DPM2-FAM102A rs3739821 (OR = 1.15, P = 8.32 × 10(-12)). We also confirmed significant association at three previously described loci (P < 5 × 10(-8) for each sentinel SNP at PLEKHA7, COL11A1, and PCMTD1-ST18), providing new insights into the biology of PACG.

A hybrid quantum/classical approach for treating the vibrational and translational motion of the I2 molecule inside a cold Ar matrix is implemented in the control of vibrational wave packet localization on the excited (A) electronic surface of I2. Quantum control was performed in the weak-field regime at six different temperatures to examine thermal effects on the dynamics of I2 inside the lattice and on the degree of control that can be achieved for this system. It was found in this study that an increase in temperature from 0 to 75 K leads to a moderate decrease in the degree of control achieved. The role played by I2 rotation on control was also shown to be minimal under the conditions examined in this work.

Eigenvalues corresponding to the three torsional degrees of freedom were calculated for the water trimer and its deuterated isotopomer in four sets of calculations involving different potential energy surfaces. The four potential surfaces were developed in this work by reparametrization of the CKL function against four sets of ab initio energies calculated with and without counterpoise correction. Transition frequencies corresponding to the low-frequency torsional motions of the trimer were calculated and then compared with those found from experiment to assess the accuracy of each potential energy surface. Although reparametrization of the CKL function to a set of counterpoise-corrected energies yielded transition energies that are in qualitative agreement with those from experiment, reparametrization to another set of counterpoise-corrected energies resulted in highly inaccurate values of the transition energy. As a consequence, our results demonstrate that caution must be exercised in the implementation of the counterpoise method as it does not always lead to more accurate ab initio calculations. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Two Lanczos subspace propagation techniques are discussed in this work and compared with the Chebyshev method applied to the original Hamiltonian matrix. Both procedures involve the use of a reduced propagator in the Lanczos subspace to calculate the solution to the time-dependent Schrodinger equation but differ in the way the propagator is evaluated. The LSC (Lanczos subspace Chebyshev) expresses the propagator in terms of Chebyshev polynomials that are functions of the tridiagonal Hamiltonian matrix in the Lanczos space. In contrast, the LSV (Lanczos subspace variational) is implemented by solving the eigenproblem in the Lanczos subspace and then performing a variational expansion of the propagator in the M-dimensional eigenvector space. Although the LSV is the same as the reduced propagator scheme proposed by Park and Light, in the present study the LSV is implemented as a one-step long-time propagator. As a numerical example, the interaction of a molecule with a strong laser pulse is investigated. The Hamiltonian is explicitly time dependent in this case, and thus the stationary formalism is employed in this work to solve the time-dependent Schrodinger equation. Application of either the LSC or LSV yields a wave function in the M-dimensional Lanczos subspace. Nonetheless, the transition amplitudes computed from this wave function are in excellent agreement with those calculated by direct application of the Chebyshev method in the original space used to define the Hamiltonian matrix. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The presence of cirrus clouds introduces complex heating and cooling effects on the atmosphere and can also interfere with remote sensing from satellite-based sensors or from high-altitude aircraft. Detection of cirrus clouds thus provides an opportunity for atmospheric correction to introduce accurate compensation to images of the earth’s surface. Previous work on detection and characterization of cirrus clouds have been based on observing spectral signatures on a spectral channel with significant water absorption, or calculation of radiant intensity ratios over a water band to a reference spectral channel. Our proposed approach is based on applying computational homology to characterize the topological properties of cirrus clouds. We utilize an application called JPLEX to study the persistent homology of multi-dimensional simplicial complexes built from available hyperspectral or multispectral data. The technique has been successfully applied to discriminate subtle features in high dimensional noisy data sets. Previous examples include anomaly detection in hyperspectral images. The analysis makes use of the entire multidimensional data set (not just one or a combination of spectral bands) which may offer advantages in discriminating among various cloud types in a scene, as well as determining other characteristics of cirrus clouds such as altitude and thickness. Our initial computational experiment with an AVIRIS scene has demonstrated that JPLEX is able to discriminate between cumulus and cirrus clouds.

La Distrofia Muscular de Duchenne (DMD) es una enfermedad hereditaria de tipo neuromuscular progresiva, que se presenta durante la infancia; afecta aproximadamente 1 de cada 3500 a 6000 niños varones nacidos vivos. El gen DMD que codifica para la distrofina, una proteína estructural del músculo, se localiza en el brazo corto del cromosoma X en la región p21, puede sufrir diferentes mutaciones ocasionando la pérdida parcial o total de la proteína lo que origina la DMD y otras enfermedades relacionadas como la Distrofia Muscular de Becker, que es una distrofia de forma más leve. Esta es una enfermedad discapacitante que se caracteriza por un deterioro progresivo de los músculos, y en las etapas avanzadas de la enfermedad se presentan generalmente complicaciones cardiorespiratorias que son las causas principales que ocasionan la muerte al paciente. Desde el punto de vista de la rehabilitación, cuyo objetivo es retrasar la progresión de la enfermedad, se han venido desarrollado una serie de estrategias de tratamiento y manejo que involucran grupos multidisciplinarios; éstas van desde trabajo en gimnasio con terapeutas para estiramientos hasta prescripción de sillas de ruedas y formulación de ventilación mecánica no invasiva, que si bien se sabe no modifican las bases genéticas de la enfermedad, sí mejoran de forma importante la independencia del paciente, facilitan los cuidados por parte de la familia y los cuidadores y permiten una mejor calidad de vida. Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) is a type of severe neuromuscular disease that occurs during childhood. It affects approximately 1 in 3500 to 6000 live male births; it is associated with the recessive X chromosome, and it manifest itself in a slightest way as Becker Muscular Dystrophy, due to a mutation in the dystrophin gene located in Xp21. This is a disabling disease that inevitably occurs until a progressive deterioration of the muscles leads to the patient's death, usually from cardiorespiratory complications. From the point of view of rehabilitation, a series of management strategies have been developed in multidisciplinary groups ranging from gym work with stretch therapists to wheelchair prescriptions, and the development of noninvasive mechanical ventilation which, while they do not modify the genetic basis of the disease, do significantly improve the patient's independence as well as the care given by family and caregivers, and provide a better quality of life. O gene DMD que codifica a distrofina, uma proteína estrutural do músculo, está localizado no braço curto do cromossomo X na região p21, pode sofrer mutações diferentes que causam perda parcial ou total da proteína que causa DMD e outras doenças relacionadas como a distrofia muscular de Becker, uma distrofia de forma mais branda. Esta é uma doença incapacitante caracterizada pela deterioração progressiva dos músculos e nos estágios avançados da doença ocorrem geralmente, complicações cardiorrespiratórias as quais são os principais motivos que causam a morte do paciente. Do ponto de vista da reabilitação, que visa retardar a progressão da doença, foram desenvolvidas uma série de estratégias de tratamento e abordagem envolvendo equipes multidisciplinares; estas vão desde o trabalho no ginásio com terapeutas para esticar á prescrição de cadeiras de rodas e formulação de ventilação mecânica não-invasiva, É bem sabido que, se não mudam as bases genéticas da doença, melhorar significativamente a independência do paciente, facilitam os cuidados pelos familiares e cuidadores e melhorar a qualidade de vida.

The synthesis and alpha-adrenoreceptor blocking activity of several substituted analogs of the prototype alpha-blocker N,N'-bis-(5-aminopentyl)cystamine (APC) are described. The three optical forms of the analog carrying methyl groups on the carbons alpha- to the sulfurs were synthesized and shown to be equipotent and somewhat less active than APC. The omega, omega'-bis-guanidino analog of APC was less active. Significant improvement in potency was observed only with APC analogs carrying benzyl and substituted benzyl groups on the terminal nitrogens. Linking the terminal nitrogens of APC with a p.xyledenyl group so as to give the 26-membered analog caused a sharp drop in activity. The significance of these results as regards the alpha-receptor topography is discussed.
