This research aims to study woven fabric construction with natural indigo dyeing with finishing for home textile applications. The physical and mechanical properties, including color fastness tests, of these woven fabrics according to ISO standards for home textiles exported to the European Union were characterized. Tensile strength, tear strength, and pilling resistance of these woven fabrics were appropriate to design, and had enough strength for bed linens, duvet covers, and pillowcases. The color fastness to washing, water, and light of these woven fabrics passed the requirements for bed linens and pillowcases, except for color fastness to wet rubbing, due to the low performance of natural dyestuff. Thus, a finishing technique of water repellency was applied to improve these properties. This design of natural fiber fabrics dyed with natural indigo was developed for home textile products whose fabrics were produced by community enterprise. These home textile products can be used as a collection prototype for a spa room in a hotel.

This work aimed to assess the synergistic antibacterial effects of thyme and oregano essential oils in various ratios (thyme:oregano; 10:0, 8:2, 6:4, 4:6, 2:8, 10:0). We hypothesized that the synergistic combination of thyme and oregano essential oils can be effectively incorporated into sericin/pectin film to enhance its functional properties. Among the combinations tested, the mixture of thyme/oregano essential oil (TOE) at an 8:2 ratio exhibited the most potent synergistic activity against P. aeruginosa and S. aureus, with fractional inhibitory concentration index (FIC index ) of 0.9. In this combination, thymol constituting 51.83 % of TOE (8:2), was the predominant component. TOE at an 8:2 ratio was selected to incorporate into sericin/pectin film. Different concentrations of TOE (0.8 %, 1.2 % and 1.6 %) were applied to evaluate their impact on film properties compared to a film without essential oil (control). It was found that increasing TOE concentration (control; 0 %) to 1.6 % reduced film moisture content (from 21.53 % to 16.91 %), decreased yellowness (from 18.24 to 15.92), diminished gloss (from 63.79 to 11.18), lowered swelling index (from 1.24 to 0.98), and reduced tensile strength (from 9.70 to 4.14 MPa). However, the addition of TOE showed higher film total phenolic content (8.59-31.53 mg gallic acid/g dry sample) and increased antioxidant activity (0.99-3.68 μmol Trolox /g dry sample). Moreover, the film with 1.2 % and 1.6 % of thyme/oregano essential oil exhibited inhibitory effects against all tested bacteria. Polyester/cotton fabrics with different proportions of Tetron Cotton, TC (35% Cotton/65% PET), and Chief Value Cotton, CVC (60% Cotton/40% PET), were investigated by removing the cotton component under various phosphoric acidic conditions including the use of cellulase enzymes. The remaining polyethylene terephthalate (PET) component was spun using the melt spinning method. Only 85% H 3 PO 4 -Enz_TC could be spun into consistent filament fibers. The effects of Acid-Enz TC (obtained from a powder preparation of 85% H 3 PO 4 -Enz_TC) at different weight amounts (1, 2, 5, and 10 %wt) blending with WF- r PET powder prepared by white recycled polyester fabric were evaluated for fiber spinnability at different winding speeds of 1000 and 1500 m/min. The results revealed that recycled PET fiber spun by adding Acid-Enz_TC up to 10 %wt gave uniformly distributed filament fibers. A comparative study of the physical, thermal, and mechanical properties also investigated the relationship between the effect of Acid-Enz_TC and the structure of the obtained fibers. Acid-Enz_TC:WF- r PET (5:95) was the optimal ratio. The thermal values were analyzed by DSC and TGA and crystallinity was analyzed by XRD, with mechanical strength closed to 100% WF- r PET. The FTIR analysis of the functional groups showed the removal of cotton from the blended fabrics. Other factors such as the Acid-Enz_TC component in WF- r PET, extraction conditions, purity, thermal, chemical, and exposure experiences also affected the formability and properties of recycled PET made from non-single-component raw materials. This study advanced the understanding of recycling PET from TC fabrics by strategically removing cotton from polyester-cotton blends and then recycling using controlled conditions and processes via the melt spinning method.

PET knitted fabric was melted and cooled by hot pressing at 250 °C to obtain a compacted sheet. Only white PET fabric (WF_PET) was used to study the recycling process by compression and grinding to powder and then melt spinning at different take-up speeds compared to PET bottle grade (BO_PET). PET knitted fabric had good fiber formability and was better suited for melt spinning of recycled PET ( r -PET) fibers than the bottle grade. Thermal and mechanical properties of r -PET fibers improved in terms of crystallinity and tensile strength with increasing take-up speed (500 to 1500 m/min). Fading and color changes from the original fabric were relatively small compared with PET bottle grade. Results indicated that fiber structure and properties can be used as a guideline for improving and developing r -PET fibers from textile waste.

Sericin is a natural protein and a by-product obtained from silk processing. To enhance the antioxidant properties of sericin, sericin hydrolysis was studied. The solvent effects (distilled water, citric acid and hydrochloric acid) and hydrolysis methods (heat treatment (water bath) and mild ultrasonic treatment at 20%, 40% or 60% amplitude) were investigated on the properties of sericin hydrolysate (SH). Furthermore, solvent effects (distilled water and 15% ethanol) were examined for the properties of the sericin films incorporated with selected SH. The SH samples from acid hydrolysis and the ultrasonic method had a darkened visual appearance. However, the degree of hydrolysis and antioxidant activity of SH increased with ultrasonic-assisted acid hydrolysis. The molecular weight (MW) of sericin was notably reduced. As expected, hydrochloric acid hydrolysis resulted in a lower MW for the SH than from citric acid. Thus, SH from hydrochloric acid and 20% amplitude in the ultrasonic method were selected to produce a sericin film. As revealed, using distilled water as a general solvent provided films with lower solubility and water vapor permeability but higher tensile strength. This study aimed to develop active paper from rice straw fibers with its function as antibacterial activity obtained from longan ( Dimocarpus longan ) peels. The morphology and mechanical properties of fibers of rice straw were examined as quality parameters for paper production. Rice straw paper (RSP) with basis weight ca 106.42 g/m 2 , 0.34 mm thickness, 34.15% brightness, and 32.26 N·m/g tensile index was successfully prepared from fibers and pulps without chemical bleaching process. Bioactive compounds of longan peels were extracted using maceration technique with a mixture of ethanol-water, and subsequently coated onto RSP at concentration of 10%, 15% and 20% ( w / v ). Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopic analysis demonstrated the functional groups of phytochemicals in the peel extract. The results of physical properties showed that the coated RSP had similar thickness and tensile index, but had lower brightness compared to control papers. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) confirmed the significantly different of surface and cross-section structures between coated and uncoated RSP. The coated RSP had relatively greater barrier properties to prevent water absorption. In addition, the RSP coated with longan peel extracts showed significant antibacterial activity against foodborne bacteria, Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus cereus . This study reveals the benefits of natural byproducts as potential materials for active packaging prepared by environmentally friendly processes.

Itaconic acid is an organic acid with a wide range of applications in the fields of polymer chemistry, pharmacy, agriculture, textile industry, etc. A bio-synthetic process of itaconic acid production in this study was carried out with Aspergillus terreus K17 having empty palm oil fruit bunches as a feedstock. Bio-synthesis of itaconic acid was compared with commercial maleic acid, itaconic acid and 1, 2, 3, 4-butanetetracarboxylic acid (BTCA) as anti-crease agents with sodium hypophosphate (SHP) as an esterification catalyst for cotton fabric finishing. The results showed that mechanical properties of cotton fabrics treated with bio-synthesized itaconic acid were better than those treated with the commercial ones whereas their whiteness index was lower. The best conditions for crease recovery were obtained from 8% w/v itaconic acid with 8% w/v SHP applied on cotton fabrics with a technique of 2-dip-2-nip, dried at 85 °C for 3 min and cured at 180 °C for 2 min. Even though the anti-crease properties of cotton fabrics treated with bio-synthesized itaconic acid were still lower than those treated with commercial maleic acid and BTCA, the finished cotton fibers retain the mechanical properties of cotton fabric. This paper is aimed at investigating the usage of biosynthesized poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (P(3-HB)) for a coating on pineapple leaf fiber paper (PLFP). For this purpose, (P(3-HB)) was produced by Rhodococcus pyridinivorans BSRT1-1, a highly potential P(3-HB) producing bacterium, with a weight-average molecular weight ( M w ) of 6.07 × 10 -5 g/mol. This biosynthesized P(3-HB) at 7.5% ( w/v ) was then coated on PLFP through the dip-coating technique with chloroform used as a solvent. The respective coated PLFP showed that P(3-HB) could be well coated all over on the PLFP surface as confirmed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The brightness and mechanical properties of PLFP could be improved by coating with biosynthesized P(3-HB) in comparison to commercially available P(3-HB) and non-coated PLFP. Furthermore, coating of P(3-HB) significantly increased the water drop penetration time on the surface of PLFP and was similar to that of the commercial P(3-HB) with the same content. The results showed that all the coated PLPF samples can be degraded under the soil burial test conditions. We have demonstrated that the P(3-HB) coated PLFP paper has the ability to prevent water drop penetration and could undergo biodegradation. Taken together, the P(3-HB) coated PLFP can be applied as a promising biodegradable paper packaging.

This research aims to utilize sericin, which is the waste from boiling silk cocoon, for the supramolecular scaffold preparation with chitosan. A suitable method for the self-assembled scaffold formation of sericin and chitosan at 1:1 stoichiometry is presented and the morphological and physical properties of the scaffold are studied. The effect of an alcohol/NaOH solution on the secondary structure of sericin protein within the sericin-chitosan scaffold, with adjusted pH, was investigated. Additionally, the scaffold was tested in a native phosphate buffer solution (PBS). The results show that sericin increases the porosity of scaffold while chitosan increases the rigidity. The self-assembled sericin and chitosan material is nontoxic to human cells and which can adhere and spread well on such support. For the effect of the molecular weight of chitosan (15,000 and 100,000 g/mol), the scaffold made from lower molecular weight (MW) chitosan provides a somewhat smaller porosity, but a similar swelling ratio and water uptake. On the basis of this research, sericin, which is a silk waste from the textile industry, can be utilized to produce a self-assembled scaffold with chitosan in order to increase the porosity of the scaffold. This type of scaffold is not toxic and can be used for the adhesion of fibroblast cells.

Amycolatopsis sp. strain HT-6, a poly(tetramethylene succinate) (PTMS)-degrading actinomycete, was observed to degrade poly(tetramethylene carbonate) (PTMC). In a liquid culture with 150 mg of PTMC film, 59% degradation was achieved, but with a low yield of cell growth. On the other hand, PTMS copolymerized with a small amount of PTMC, forming a copolyester carbonate (PEC) that was completely and rapidly degraded with a high yield of cell growth.
