Quantum sensing promises to revolutionize sensing applications by employing quantum states of light or matter as sensing probes. Photons are the clear choice as quantum probes for remote sensing because they can travel to and interact with a distant target. Existing schemes are mainly based on the quantum illumination framework, which requires a quantum memory to store a single photon of an initially entangled pair until its twin reflects off a target and returns for final correlation measurements. Existing demonstrations are limited to tabletop experiments, and expanding the sensing range faces various roadblocks, including long-time quantum storage and photon loss and noise when transmitting quantum signals over long distances. We propose a novel quantum sensing framework that addresses these challenges using quantum frequency combs with path identity for remote sensing of signatures (``qCOMBPASS"). The combination of one key quantum phenomenon and two quantum resources, namely quantum induced coherence by path identity, quantum frequency combs, and two-mode squeezed light, allows for quantum remote sensing without requiring a quantum memory. The proposed scheme is akin to a quantum radar based on entangled frequency comb pairs that uses path identity to detect/range/sense a remote target of interest by measuring pulses of one comb in the pair that never flew to target, but that contains target information ``teleported" by quantum-induced coherence from the other comb in the pair that did fly to target but is not detected., Comment: To appear in PRX

Kondo impurities provide a nontrivial probe to unravel the character of the excitations of a quantum spin liquid. In the S=1/2 Kitaev model on the honeycomb lattice, Kondo impurities embedded in the spin-liquid host can be screened by itinerant Majorana fermions via gauge-flux binding. Here, we report experimental signatures of metallic-like Kondo screening at intermediate temperatures in the Kitaev honeycomb material {\alpha}-RuCl3 with dilute Cr3+ (S=3/2) impurities. The static magnetic susceptibility, the muon Knight shift, and the muon spin-relaxation rate all feature logarithmic divergences, a hallmark of a metallic Kondo effect. Concurrently, the linear coefficient of the magnetic specific heat is large in the same temperature regime, indicating the presence of a host Majorana metal. The spin-Hall effect describes the interconversion of charge currents and spin currents, enabling highly efficient manipulation of magnetization for spintronics. Symmetry conditions generally restrict polarizations of these spin currents to be orthogonal to both the charge and spin flows. Spin polarizations can deviate from such direction in nonmagnetic materials only when the crystalline symmetry is reduced11. Here we experimentally show control of the spin polarization direction by using a non-collinear antiferromagnet Mn$_{3}$GaN, in which the triangular spin structure creates a low magnetic symmetry state while maintaining a high crystalline symmetry. We demonstrate that epitaxial Mn3GaN/Permalloy heterostructures can generate unique types of spinHall torques at room temperature corresponding to unconventional spin polarizations collinear to spin currents or charge currents which are forbidden in any sample with two-fold rotational symmetry. Our results demonstrate an approach based on spin-structure design for controlling spinorbit torque, paving the way for further progress in the emergent field of antiferromagnetic spintronics.

We report on magnetization $M(H)$, dc/ac magnetic susceptibility $\chi(T)$, specific heat $C_{\mathrm{m}}(T)$ and muon spin relaxation ($\mu$SR) measurements of the Kitaev honeycomb iridate Cu$_2$IrO$_2$ with quenched disorder. In spite of the chemical disorders, we find no indication of spin glass down to 260~mK from the $C_{\mathrm{m}}(T)$ and $\mu$SR data. Furthermore, a persistent spin dynamics observed by the zero-field muon spin relaxation evidences an absence of static magnetism. The remarkable observation is a scaling relation of $\chi[H,T]$ and $M[H,T]$ in $H/T$ with the scaling exponent $\alpha=0.26-0.28$, expected from bond randomness. However, $C_{\mathrm{m}}[H,T]/T$ disobeys the predicted universal scaling law, pointing towards the presence of low-lying excitations in addition to random singlets. Our results signify an intriguing role of quenched disorder in a Kitaev spin system in creating low-energy excitations possibly pertaining to Z$_2$ fluxes.

For scalar reaction-diffusion equations, a traveling wave is a front which transforms a higher energy state to a lower energy state. The same is true for a system of equations with a gradient structure. At the core of this phenomenon, the wave propagation results in an invasion of an equilibrium state from a different one. This paper is aimed at two questions: (i) Can reaction-diffusion waves exhibit front propagation in both directions between two distinct equilibrium states? (ii) The co-existence of traveling fronts and pulses; a subject rarely studied. Working on a FitzHugh-Nagumo model with the same physical parameters, we give positive answers to both questions.

Patterns and waves are basic and important phenomena that govern the dynamics of physical and biological systems. A common theme in investigating such systems is to identify the intrinsic factors responsible for such self-organization. The $\Gamma$-convergence is a well-known technique applicable to variational formulation in studying the concentration phenomena of stable patterns. A geometric variational functional associated with the $\Gamma$-limit of standing waves of FitzHugh-Nagumo system has recently been built. This article studies the $\Gamma$-limit of traveling waves. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first attempt to expand the scope of applicability of $\Gamma$-convergence to cover non-stationary problems.

We report on thermodynamic, magnetization, and muon spin relaxation measurements of the strong spin-orbit coupled iridate Ba$_3$IrTi$_2$O$_9$, which constitutes a new frustration motif made up a mixture of edge- and corner-sharing triangles. In spite of strong antiferromagnetic exchange interaction of the order of 100~K, we find no hint for long-range magnetic order down to 23 mK. The magnetic specific heat data unveil the $T$-linear and -squared dependences at low temperatures below 1~K. At the respective temperatures, the zero-field muon spin relaxation features a persistent spin dynamics, indicative of unconventional low-energy excitations. A comparison to the $4d$ isostructural compound Ba$_3$RuTi$_2$O$_9$ suggests that a concerted interplay of compass-like magnetic interactions and frustrated geometry promotes a dynamically fluctuating state in a triangle-based iridate., Comment: Physical Review B accepted

We report on zero-field muon spin rotation, electron spin resonance and polarized Raman scattering measurements of the coupled quantum spin ladder Ba2CuTeO6. Zero-field muon spin rotation and electron spin resonance probes disclose a successive crossover from a paramagnetic through a spin-liquid-like into a magnetically ordered state with decreasing temperature. More significantly, the two-magnon Raman response obeys a T-linear scaling relation in its peak energy, linewidth and intensity. This critical scaling behavior presents an experimental signature of proximity to a quantum critical point from an ordered side in Ba2CuTeO6., Comment: Accepted for publication in Phys. Rev. B

We report an experimental investigation of the two-dimensional ${J}_{\rm eff}$ = 1/2 antiferromagnetic Mott insulator by varying the interlayer exchange coupling in [(SrIrO$_3$)$_1$, (SrTiO$_3$)$_m$] ($m$ = 1, 2 and 3) superlattices. Although all samples exhibited an insulating ground state with long-range magnetic order, temperature-dependent resistivity measurements showed a stronger insulating behavior in the $m$ = 2 and $m$ = 3 samples than the $m$ = 1 sample which displayed a clear kink at the magnetic transition. This difference indicates that the blocking effect of the excessive SrTiO$_3$ layer enhances the effective electron-electron correlation and strengthens the Mott phase. The significant reduction of the Neel temperature from 150 K for $m$ = 1 to 40 K for $m$ = 2 demonstrates that the long-range order stability in the former is boosted by a substantial interlayer exchange coupling. Resonant x-ray magnetic scattering revealed that the interlayer exchange coupling has a switchable sign, depending on the SrTiO$_3$ layer number $m$, for maintaining canting-induced weak ferromagnetism. The nearly unaltered transition temperature between the $m$ = 2 and the $m$ = 3 demonstrated that we have realized a two-dimensional antiferromagnet at finite temperatures with diminishing interlayer exchange coupling., Comment: 4 figures

The fractionalization of elementary excitations in quantum spin systems is a central theme in current condensed matter physics. The Kitaev honeycomb spin model provides a prominent example of exotic fractionalized quasiparticles, composed of itinerant Majorana fermions and gapped gauge fluxes. However, identification of the Majorana fermions in a three-dimensional honeycomb lattice remains elusive. Here we report spectroscopic signatures of fractional excitations in the harmonic-honeycomb iridates $\beta$- and $\gamma$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$. Using polarization resolved Raman spectroscopy, we find that the dynamical Raman response of $\beta$- and $\gamma$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$ features a broad scattering continuum with distinct polarization and composition dependence. The temperature dependence of the Raman spectral weight is dominated by the thermal damping of fermionic excitations. These results suggest the emergence of Majorana fermions from spin fractionalization in a three-dimensional Kitaev-Heisenberg system., Comment: accepted for publications in Nature Communications

We demonstrate that very few (1 to 3) quantum dots as a gain medium are sufficient to realize a photonic crystal laser based on a high-quality nanocavity. Photon correlation measurements show a transition from a thermal to a coherent light state proving that lasing action occurs at ultra-low thresholds. Observation of lasing is unexpected since the cavity mode is in general not resonant with the discrete quantum dot states and emission at those frequencies is suppressed. In this situation, the quasi-continuous quantum dot states become crucial since they provide an energy-transfer channel into the lasing mode, effectively leading to a self-tuned resonance for the gain medium., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Phys. We investigate solutions to a nonlinear integral equation which has a central role in implementing the non-Abelian Gauss's Law and in constructing gauge-invariant quark and gluon fields. Here we concern ourselves with solutions to this same equation that are not operator-valued, but are functions of spatial variables and carry spatial and SU(2) indices. We obtain an expression for the gauge-invariant gauge field in two-color QCD, define an index that we will refer to as the ``winding number'' that characterizes it, and show that this winding number is invariant to a small gauge transformation of the gauge field on which our construction of the gauge-invariant gauge field is based. We discuss the role of this gauge field in determining the winding number of the gauge-invariant gauge field. We also show that when the winding number of the gauge field is an integer $\ell{\neq}0$, the gauge-invariant gauge field manifests winding numbers that are not integers, and are half-integers only when $\ell=0$., Comment: 26 pages including 6 encapsulated postscript figures. The invaded cluster algorithm, a new method for simulating phase transitions, is described in detail. Theoretical, albeit nonrigorous, justification of the method is presented and the algorithm is applied to Potts models in two and three dimensions. The algorithm is shown to be useful for both first-order and continuous transitions and evidently provides an efficient way to distinguish between these possibilities. The dynamic properties of the invaded cluster algorithm are studied. A new cluster algorithm based on invasion percolation is described. The algorithm samples the critical point of a spin system without a priori knowledge of the critical temperature and provides an efficient way to determine the critical temperature and other observables in the critical region. The method is illustrated for the two- and three-dimensional Ising models.
