1. Anomalous 4$f$ fine structure in TmSe$_{1-x}$Te$_x$ across the metal-insulator transition

Abstract

Hybridization between localized 4$f$ and itinerant 5$d$6$s$ states in heavy fermion compounds is a well-studied phenomenon and commonly captured by the paradigmatic Anderson model. However, the investigation of additional electronic interactions, beyond the standard Anderson model, has been limited, despite their predicted important role in the exotic quasiparticle formation in mixed-valence systems. We investigate the 4$f$ states in TmSe$_{1-x}$Te$_x$ throughout a semimetal-insulator phase transition, which drastically varies the interactions related to the 4$f$ states. Using synchrotron-based hard x-ray and extreme ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy, we resolve subtle peak splitting in the 4$f$ peaks near the Fermi level in the mixed-valent semimetal phase. The separation is enhanced by several tens of meV by increasing the lattice parameter by a few percent. Our results elucidate the evolving nature of the 4$f$ state across the phase transition, and provide direct experimental evidence for electronic interactions beyond the standard Anderson model in mixed-valence systems., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures for the main text, 6 pages and 5 figures for the supplementary

5. Thermal activation energy of 3D vortex matter in NaFe1-xCoxAs (x=0.01, 0.03 and 0.07) single crystals

Abstract

We report on the thermally activated flux flow dependency on the doping dependent mixed state in NaFe1-xCoxAs (x=0.01, 0.03, and 0.07) crystals using the magnetoresistivity in the case of B//c-axis and B//ab-plane. It was found clearly that irrespective of the doping ratio, magnetoresistivity showed a distinct tail just above the Tc, offset associated with the thermally activated flux flow (TAFF) in our crystals. Furthermore, in TAFF region the temperature dependence of the activation energy follows the relation U(T, B)=U_0 (B) (1-T/T_c )^q with q=1.5 in all studied crystals. The magnetic field dependence of the activation energy follows a power law of U_0 (B)~B^(-{\alpha}) where the exponent {\alpha} is changed from a low value to a high value at a crossover field of B=~2T, indicating the transition from collective to plastic pinning in the crystals. Finally, it is suggested that the 3D vortex phase is the dominant phase in the low-temperature region as compared to the TAFF region in our series samples.

7. Fluctuation magnetoconductivity in pristine and protonirradiated Ca8.5La1.5(Pt3As8)(Fe2As2)5 single crystals

Abstract

The influence of the proton irradiation on the thermally fluctuation-induced conductivity in Ca8.5La1.5(pt3As8)(Fe2As2)5 single crystal was investigatyed. The in-plane magnetoconductivity was measured up to H=13T. It is observed that the Tc was suppressed up to 30.3 from 32.5 K when the proton is irradiated whereas the amplitude of the fluctuation effect is the almost same in both samples. The results were analyzed by the Ullah and Dorsey scaling functions based on the Hartree approximation to the Ginzburg-Landau free energy, including the critical-fluctuation regime. In the pristine sample, the 3D-2D crossover in the fluctuation effect was observed near the Tc. When the 3D-2D occurs, it is newly found that there is a regime simultaneously described by 2D and 3D fluctuation behaviors. Abstract

Using a combination of muon-spin relaxation ($\mu$SR), inelastic neutron scattering (INS) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), we investigated the novel iron-based superconductor with a triclinic crystal structure (CaFe$_{1-x}$Pt$_x$As)$_{10}$Pt$_3$As$_8$ (T$_{\rm c}$ = 13 K), containing platinum-arsenide intermediary layers. The temperature dependence of the superfluid density obtained from the $\mu$SR relaxation-rate measurements indicates the presence of two superconducting gaps, $\Delta_\text{1}\gg\Delta_\text{2}$. According to our INS measurements, commensurate spin fluctuations are centered at the ($\pi$, 0) wave vector, like in most other iron arsenides. Their intensity remains unchanged across T$_\text{c}$, indicating the absence of a spin resonance typical for many Fe-based superconductors. Instead, we observed a peak in the spin-excitation spectrum around $\hslash\omega_0=\,$7 meV at the same wave vector, which persists above T$_{\rm c}$ and is characterized by the ratio $\hslash\omega_0/k_\text{B}T_\text{c}\approx\,$6.2, which is significantly higher than typical values for the magnetic resonant modes in iron pnictides (~4.3). The temperature dependence of magnetic intensity at 7 meV revealed an anomaly around T* = 45 K related to the disappearance of this new mode. A suppression of the spin-lattice relaxation rate, $1/T_1T$, observed by NMR immediately below T* without any notable subsequent anomaly at T$_{\rm c}$, indicates that T* could mark the onset of a pseudogap in (CaFe$_{1-x}$Pt$_x$As)$_{10}$Pt$_3$As$_8$, which is likely associated with the emergence of preformed Cooper pairs.

Abstract

We fabricated GaAs/AlGaAs quantum dots by droplet epitaxy method, and obtained the geometries of the dots from scanning transmission electron microscopy data. Post-thermal annealing is essential for the optical activation of quantum dots grown by droplet epitaxy. We investigated the emission energy shifts of the dots and underlying superlattice by post-thermal annealing with photoluminescence and cathodoluminescence measurements, and specified the emissions from the dots by selectively etching the structure down to a lower layer of quantum dots. We studied the influences of the degree of annealing on the optical properties of the dots from the peak shifts of the superlattice, which has the same composition as the dots, since the superlattice has uniform and well-defined geometry. Theoretical analysis provided the diffusion length dependence of the peak shifts of the emission spectra.

12. Direct sound radiation from random structures

Abstract

This dissertation reports a theoretical and numerical study on direct sound radiation from vibrating structures having uncertainties. The motivation for this research is the lack of existing statistical calculations for direct sound radiation. Statistical Energy Analysis is a method commonly used in analyzing complex dynamic systems in high frequency ranges. However, direct sound radiation from the system is not widely investigated yet. A plate and a sphere were selected as two basic vibrating structures, and the uncertainties are modelled using randomly positioned point masses on the structures. Previous researches on sound radiation and statistics related to this dissertation are first summarized. Then, deterministic analysis of radiation is studied for a plate and a closed spherical shell. The relation of modal coefficient of the vibration to modal radiation is considered in the radiation response. The critical frequency of the sphere is investigated, and its effect on radiation behaviour is discussed. Vibration and direct radiation from a random plate are numerically simulated and theoretically estimated. In the numerical simulation, ensemble statistics for vibration are found to depend on the parameters of the randomness, and characteristics of radiation dependent on the randomness are introduced. Theoretical estimates of the ensemble statistics of vibration are then derived, considering the effects of reflection at boundaries and wave attention due to random point masses. Radiation estimates are calculated using the Rayleigh integral, and their statistical behaviours are discussed. These estimates compare well with the numerical simulation.

Abstract

Autosomal genetic analyses of blood lipids have yielded key insights for coronary heart disease (CHD). However, X chromosome genetic variation is understudied for blood lipids in large sample sizes. We now analyze genetic and blood lipid data in a high-coverage whole X chromosome sequencing study of 65,322 multi-ancestry participants and perform replication among 456,893 European participants. Common alleles on chromosome Xq23 are strongly associated with reduced total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and triglycerides (min P = 8.5 × 10−72), with similar effects for males and females. Chromosome Xq23 lipid-lowering alleles are associated with reduced odds for CHD among 42,545 cases and 591,247 controls (P = 1.7 × 10−4), and reduced odds for diabetes mellitus type 2 among 54,095 cases and 573,885 controls (P = 1.4 × 10−5). Although we observe an association with increased BMI, waist-to-hip ratio adjusted for BMI is reduced, bioimpedance analyses indicate increased gluteofemoral fat, and abdominal MRI analyses indicate reduced visceral adiposity. Co-localization analyses strongly correlate increased CHRDL1 gene expression, particularly in adipose tissue, with reduced concentrations of blood lipids.

Abstract

The B-site ordered double perovskites Sr2Cu(Te1−xWx)O6 provide an excellent arena for investigating exotic phases expected for the J1-J2 square-lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet. Here, combining magnetic susceptibility and specific-heat measurements with electron spin resonance (ESR) and muon spin rotation/relaxation (μSR) techniques, we explore a spin-liquid-like state in the vicinity of the Néel critical end point (x = 0.05–0.1). The specific heat and the ESR and muon relaxation rates give evidence for an energy hierarchy of low-energy excitations, reminiscent of randomness-induced singlet states. In addition, the weak transverse μSR data show a fraction of frozen magnetic moments in the random-singlet background. The origin of a random-singlet-like state near the phase boundary is discussed in terms of concomitant exchange randomness and local strain generated by the W6+-for-Te6+ substitution.
