16. Enhancing Photocatalytic CO2Reduction and Photo-oxidative Coupling over CdS/S-g-C3N4Heterojunction Interface into Solar Chemicals

Abstract

Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) has gained attention as a metal-free photocatalyst to generate solar chemicals via efficient solar-driven CO2reduction reactions. Even though the pristine g-C3N4and its analogous ones have excellent chemical properties, a disordered structure observed in various types of g-C3N4hinders the efficient charge separation process as well as the transport of photoexcited charge carriers linked to the photocatalytic performance. To overcome this limitation, we employed the introduction of a heterojunction architecture into sulfur-doped g-C3N4with CdS. By using the self-assembled method, we fabricated the CdS/S-g-C3N4heterojunction photocatalyst and designed a hybrid artificial photosynthetic module including a CdS/S-g-C3N4photocatalyst and biological enzyme for the generation of HCOOH from CO2. From the photocatalytic test, it was confirmed that the presence of the interfacial heterojunction in CdS/S-g-C3N4showed the enhanced production of formic acid that is much higher than that in the pristine S-g-C3N4. The systematic spectroscopic measurements provide mechanistic insights for the photoinduced electronic dynamics linked to the macroscopic photocatalytic performance in the CdS/S-g-C3N4heterojunction photocatalyst. Our study suggests that the artificial photosynthesis based on the heterojunction architecture-embedded photocatalyst will offer a promising and sustainable strategy for fixing CO2and generating solar chemicals.

31. Impact of BMI on Complications of Gastric Endoscopic Submucosal Dissection.

Abstract

Background: Gastric endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) has a high rate of complications. However, it is unclear whether BMI affects ESD complications. We aimed to investigate the impact of BMI on ESD complications. Methods: A total of 7,263 patients who underwent gastric ESD were classified into 3 groups according to the Asia-Pacific classification of BMI: normal (BMI <23 kg/m2, n = 2,466), overweight (BMI 23–24.9 kg/m2, n = 2,117), and obese (BMI ≥25 kg/m2, n = 2,680). Adjusted logistic regression analyses were conducted to assess the association between BMI and ESD complications. Results: Compared to the normal group, a lower incidence of perforation and a higher incidence of pneumonia and leukocytosis were found in the overweight and obese groups, and intra-ESD desaturation and hypertension were more frequent in the obese group. After adjustment for confounders, the risk of perforation significantly decreased in the overweight (odds ratio [OR] = 0.24, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.17–0.33) and obese (OR = 0.12, 95% CI: 0.08–0.18) groups compared to that in the normal group. Meanwhile, the risk of pneumonia significantly increased in the overweight (OR = 11.04, 95% CI: 6.31–19.31) and obese (OR = 10.71, 95% CI: 6.14–18.66) groups compared to the normal group. During sedation, the obese group had a significantly increased risk of desaturation (OR = 2.81, 95% CI: 1.18–6.69) and hypertension (OR = 1.35, 95% CI: 1.11–1.63) compared to the normal group. Conclusions: High BMI was significantly associated with ESD complications. More caution is needed in cases of obese patients undergoing ESD. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Current appropriate technology promoting social sustainability for rural, underprivileged populations is often plagued by lack of affordability, maintenance, and personal training, and is also empathetically disconnected from local people and culture. This study proposes criteria for balancing design thinking processes and appropriate technology for social sustainability. In this study, we concretized five assumptions for design thinking processes: user-oriented design with mass productivity; reiterative nature through user satisfaction surveys; affordability for purchase, maintenance, and repair services; local appropriateness; and eco-friendliness with environmental sustainability. Next, we applied the criteria to 28 representative cases from the water, energy, health, shelter, and transportation fields. The cases were evaluated using qualitative content analysis. Findings show that the criteria are necessary for setting economic, social, and environmental development goals for underprivileged regions after considering local contexts. Cultural empathy and collaboration with locals are key for finding practical solutions and co-creating options iteratively. Further, the cases were compared quantitatively using radar diagrams, histograms, and graphs showing average values and standard deviations, providing an objective measure for appropriate technology. Notably, both qualitative and quantitative approaches can serve as useful guidelines for designers, developers, and local users when developing appropriate technology for social sustainability in underprivileged regions.
