Surface-bound molecular motors can drive the collective motion of cytoskeletal filaments in the form of nematic bands and polar flocks in reconstituted gliding assays. Although these swarming transitions are an emergent property of active filament collisions, they can be controlled and guided by tuning the surface chemistry or topography of the substrate. To date, the impact of surface topography on collective motion in active nematics is only partially understood, with most experimental studies focusing on the escape of a single filament from etched channels. Since the late 1990s, significant progress has been made to utilize the nonequilibrium properties of active filaments and create a range of functional nanodevices relevant to biosensing and parallel computation; however, the complexity of these swarming transitions presents a challenge when attempting to increase filament surface concentrations. In this work, we etch shallow, linear trenches into glass substrates to induce the formation of swarming nematic bands and investigate the mechanisms by which surface topography regulates the two-dimensional (2D) collective motion of driven filamentous actin (F-actin). We demonstrate that nematic swarms only appear at intermediate trench spacings and vanish if the trenches are made too narrow, wide, or tortuous. To rationalize these results, we simulate the F-actin as self-propelled, semiflexible chains subject to a soft, spatially modulated potential that encodes the energetic cost of bending a filament along the edge of a trench. In our model, we hypothesize that an individual filament experiences a penalty when its projected end-to-end distance is smaller than the trench spacing (bending and turning). However, chains that span the channel width glide above the trenches in a force- and torque-free manner (crowd-surfing). Our simulations demonstrate that collections of filaments form nematic bands only at intermediate trench spacings, consistent with our experimental findings.

Manipulating the spontaneous emission rate of fluorophores is vital in creating bright incoherent illumination for optical sensing and imaging, as well as fast single-photon sources for quantum technology applications. This can be done via increasing the Purcell effect by using non-monolithic optical nanocavities; however, achieving the desired performance is challenging due to difficulties in fabrication, precise positioning, and frequency tuning of cavity-emitter coupling. Here, we demonstrate a simple approach to achieve a wavelength-dependent photoluminescence (PL) lifetime modification using monolithic organic molecular aggregates films. These single monolithic organic films are designed to have a Lorentzian dispersion, including epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) and epsilon-near-pole (ENP) spectral regions with increased and decreased photonic density of states, respectively. This dispersion leads to enhanced and depressed PL decay rates at different wavelengths. Both time-resolved photoluminescence (TRPL) and fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy (FLIM) measurements are implemented to verify the validity of this approach. This approach offers a promising way to design dual-functional optical sources for a variety of applications, including bioimaging, sensing, data communications, and quantum photonics applications.

This work aims to validate the feasibility of device-level analysis to reflect the effects of fabrication processes and operations, as contrasted with the conventional method of x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), which is widely employed in amorphous oxide semiconductor thin-film transistors (TFTs) but analyzes film-level specimens. First, an analysis setup was introduced to determine the optimal x-ray target position for device-level XPS, where the intensity of channel components is maximized, through imaging XPS. Then, to demonstrate the effectiveness of this approach, the impact of channel composition and bias-stress was investigated through the implementation of device-level XPS on bottom-gate InGaZnO TFTs. The cationic composition ratios of the fabricated TFTs varied from 0.27:1:1.33 (In:Ga:Zn) and 0.28:1:2.21 when the subcycle of the Zn precursor increased by a factor of 1.5 in the atomic-layer deposition process. The device with a higher Zn ratio exhibited a more negative turn-on voltage and a twice larger subthreshold swing. These characteristics were validated from the comparisons in the relative amount of oxygen vacancies in O 1s of the channel and interface regions by 8.4%p and 5.6%p, respectively, between the devices. Furthermore, the electron trapping effect was verified for the devices subjected to a positive gate bias-stress of 3 MV/cm, as evidenced by the changes in the binding energy difference (0.35 eV) between the channel and gate insulator layers, in comparison to the non-stressed device. Consequently, this work demonstrates that device-level XPS can be an effective tool for understanding TFTs' characteristics in various ways beyond film-level analysis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract Background Thirty-two-day-old broiler chickens at a farm located in northwestern South Korea displayed adverse neurological symptoms including limping, lying down, and head shaking. Approximately 2.1% of chickens died or were culled due to severe symptoms. Five carcasses were submitted to the Avian Disease Division of the Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency (APQA) for disease diagnosis. Results Broilers displayed severe pericarditis and perihepatitis associated with gross lesions. Broilers also displayed microscopic lesions in the cerebrum and in the granular layer of the cerebellum, which were associated with multifocal perivascular cuffing and purulent necrosis in the cerebrum, and severe meningitis with heterophil and lymphocyte infiltration. Staphylococcus spp. were identified in the liver and heart using bacteriological culture. PCR/RT-PCR assays revealed that broilers were negative for avian Clostridium botulinum, Newcastle disease virus, and avian encephalomyelitis virus. Bacterial and viral metagenomic analysis of brain sample further revealed the presence of Pseudomonas spp. and Marek’s disease virus, which are known etiological agents of chicken meningoencephalitis. Conclusions This study reports a diagnostic analysis of gross and histopathological lesions from 32-day-old broilers displaying unique neurological symptoms that revealed the presence of the several neurological diseases including meningoencephalitis. The causative agents associated with meningoencephalitis of broilers that had not been identified by routine diagnostic methods could be diagnosed by metagenomics, which proves the usefulness of metagenomics as a diagnostic tool for unknown neurological diseases in broilers.

Porcine respiratory coronavirus (PRCV) is a member of the species Alphacoronavirus 1 within the genus Alphacoronavirus of the family Coronaviridae. A few studies have been conducted on the prevalence of PRCV since its first identification in 1997, but there have been no recent studies on the prevalence and genetic characterization of the virus in Korea. In this study, the seroprevalence of PRCV was determined in Korean pig farms using a commercially available TGEV/PRCV differential enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kit. The farm-level seroprevalence of PRCV was determined to be 68.6% (48/70), similar to previous reports in Korea, suggesting that PRCV is still circulating in Korean pig herds nationwide. Among the 20 PRCV-seropositive farms tested in this study, PRCV RNAs were detected in 17 oral fluid samples (28.3%) from nine farms (45.0%), while TGEV RNAs were not detected in any sample. To investigate the genetic characteristics of Korean PRCV strains, genetic and phylogenetic analyses were conducted on PRCV spike gene sequences obtained in this study. The three Korean PRCV strains (KPRCV2401, KPRCV2402, and KPRCV2403) shared 98.5–100% homology with each other and 96.2–96.6% and 91.6–94.5% homology with European and American strains, respectively. A 224-amino acid deletion was found in the S gene of both Korean and European PRCVs but not in that of American PRCVs, suggesting a European origin for Korean PRCVs. Phylogenetic analysis showed that Korean PRCVs are more closely related to European PRCVs than American PRCVs but clustered apart from both, suggesting that Korean PRCV has evolved independently since its emergence in Korean PRCVs. The results of this study will help expand knowledge on the epidemiology and molecular biology of PRCV currently circulating in Korea.

ABSTRACT: Since 2014, periodic outbreaks of high pathogenicity avian influenza (HPAI) caused by clade 2.3.4.4 H5 HPAI virus (HPAIV) have resulted in huge economic losses in the Korean poultry industry. During the winter season of 2016–2017, clade 2.3.4.4e H5N6 HPAIVs classified into 5 subgroups (C1–5) were introduced into South Korea. Interestingly, it was revealed that the subgroup C2 and C4 viruses were predominantly distributed throughout the country, whereas detection of the subgroup C3 viruses was confined in a specific local region. In the present study, we conducted comparative evaluation of the pathogenicity of viruses belonging to subgroups C2 and C3 (H15 and HN1 strains) in specific pathogen-free (SPF) chickens, and further compared them with previously determined pathogenicity of subgroup C4 (ES2 strain) virus. The HN1 strain showed lower viral replication in tissues, less transmissibility, and higher mean chicken lethal dose than the H15 and ES2 strains in SPF chickens. Considering that the HN1 strain has a different NS gene segment from the H15 and ES2 strains, the reassortment of the NS gene segment likely affects their infectivity and transmissibility in chickens. These findings emphasize the importance of monitoring the genetic characteristics and pathogenic features of HPAIVs to effectively control their outbreaks in the field.

Outbreaks caused by foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) A/ASIA/G-VII lineage viruses have often occurred in Middle Eastern and Southeast Asian countries since 2015. Because A/ASIA/G-VII lineage viruses are reported to have distinct antigenic relatedness with available commercial FMD vaccine strains, it is necessary to investigate whether inoculation with vaccines used in Korea could confer cross-protection against A/ASIA/G-VII lineage viruses. In the present study, we conducted two vaccination challenge trials to evaluate the efficacy of three commercial FMD vaccines (O/Manisa + O/3039 + A/Iraq, O/Campos + A/Cruzeiro + A/2001, and O/Primorsky + A/Zabaikalsky) against heterologous challenge with ASIA/G-VII lineage viruses (A/TUR/13/2017 or A/BHU/3/2017 strains) in pigs. In each trial, clinical signs, viremia, and salivary shedding of virus were measured for 7 days after challenge. In summary, the O/Campos + A/Cruzeiro + A/2001 vaccine provided full protection against two A/ASIA/G-VII lineage viruses in vaccinated pigs, where significant protection was observed. Although unprotected animals were observed in groups vaccinated with O/Manisa + O/3039 + A/Iraq or O/Primorsky + A/Zabaikalsky vaccines, the clinical scores and viral RNA levels in the sera and oral swabs of vaccinated animals were significantly lower than those of unvaccinated controls.

OBJECTIVE:To study risk factors of secondary lumbar discectomy (LD) for recurrent herniated lumbar disc (HLD) and identify methods to lower the rate of recurrence. METHODS:Data from 160 patients who underwent primary LD were collected retrospectively. Demographic features, radiologic findings including Pfirrmann disc degeneration, and surgical information were analyzed to compare risks between revision and non-revision patients. RESULTS:The revision rate was 15% (24 patients), and the mean follow-up was 28.3 months. HLD recurrence was not related to any demographic characteristics. Primary and secondary LD were most common at the L4-5 level, but the level of operation was not significantly associated with revision.
