The putative Kitaev material Na$_2$Co$_2$TeO$_6$ has recently been proposed to enter a quantum spin disordered state when magnetic fields are applied in parallel to the honeycomb layers. In this report we uncover signatures of a quantum critical endpoint (QCEP) associated with the assumed order-disorder transition by means of high-resolution capacitance dilatometry. At the critical field $B_\mathrm{C} \simeq 6$~T , a sign change of the out-of-plane thermal expansion coefficient $\alpha_c$ indicates accumulation of entropy upon crossing the phase boundary. The proportional relationship between isothermal magnetisation and magnetostriction signals that the QCEP can be tuned by magnetic field and pressure simultaneously. Kondo impurities provide a nontrivial probe to unravel the character of the excitations of a quantum spin liquid. In the S=1/2 Kitaev model on the honeycomb lattice, Kondo impurities embedded in the spin-liquid host can be screened by itinerant Majorana fermions via gauge-flux binding. Here, we report experimental signatures of metallic-like Kondo screening at intermediate temperatures in the Kitaev honeycomb material {\alpha}-RuCl3 with dilute Cr3+ (S=3/2) impurities. The static magnetic susceptibility, the muon Knight shift, and the muon spin-relaxation rate all feature logarithmic divergences, a hallmark of a metallic Kondo effect. Concurrently, the linear coefficient of the magnetic specific heat is large in the same temperature regime, indicating the presence of a host Majorana metal. Collective behavior of spins, frustration-induced strong quantum fluctuations, and subtle interplay between competing degrees of freedom in quantum materials can lead to correlated quantum states with exotic excitations that are essential ingredients for establishing paradigmatic models and have immense potential for quantum technologies. Disorder is ubiquitous in real materials, and the detailed insights into the role of disorder on the intriguing ground state borne out of quenched randomness provide a route toward the design and discovery of functional quantum materials. Herein, we report magnetization, specific heat, electron spin resonance, and muon spin resonance studies on a 3d-electron-based antiferromagnet Sr3CuTa2O9. The negative Curie- Weiss temperature value, obtained from the Curie-Weiss fit of high-temperature magnetic susceptibility data, indicates antiferromagnetic interaction between Cu2+ moments. Specific heat data show the absence of long-range magnetic ordering down to 64 mK despite a reasonably strong exchange interaction between Cu2+ (S =1/2) spins as reflected from a Curie-Weiss temperature of -27 K. The power-law behavior and the data collapse of specific heat and magnetization data evince the emergence of a random-singlet state in Sr3CuTa2O9. The power-law-like spin auto-correlation function and the data collapse of muon polarization asymmetry with longitudinal field dependence of t({\mu}0H)^{\gamma} further support credence to the presence of a randomness-induced quantum disordered state. Our results suggest that randomness induced by disorder is an alternate route to realize a quantum disordered state in this antiferromagnet.

The interplay between spin-orbit coupling, anisotropic magnetic interaction, frustration-induced quantum fluctuations and spin correlations can lead to novel quantum states with exotic excitations in rare-earth-based quantum magnets. Herein, we present the crystal structure, magnetization, electron spin resonance (ESR), specific heat, and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiments on the polycrystalline samples of Ba9Yb2Si6O24, in which Yb3+ ions form a perfect honeycomb lattice without detectable anti-site disorder. The magnetization data reveal antiferromagnetically coupled spin-orbit entangled Jeff = 1/2 degrees of freedom of Yb3+ ions in the Kramers doublet state. The ESR measurements reveal that the first excited Kramers doublet is 32.3(7) meV above the ground state. The specific heat results suggest the absence of any long-range magnetic order in the measured temperature range. Furthermore, the 29Si NMR results do not indicate any signature of magnetic ordering down to 1.6 K, and the spin-lattice relaxation rate reveals the presence of a field-induced gap that is attributed to the Zeeman splitting of Kramers doublet state in this quantum material. Our experiments detect neither spin freezing nor long-range magnetic ordering down to 1.6 K. The current results suggest the presence of short-range spin correlations in this spin-orbit entangled Jeff =1/2 rare-earth magnet on a honeycomb lattice.

In this work, we study magnetoelastic interactions by means of ultrasound experiments in $\alpha$-RuCl$_3$ -- a prototypical material for the Kitaev spin model on the honeycomb lattice, with a possible spin-liquid state featuring Majorana fermions and $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$-flux excitations. We present results of the temperature and in-plane magnetic-field dependence of the sound velocity and sound attenuation for several longitudinal and transverse phonon modes propagating along high-symmetry crystallographic directions. A comprehensive data analysis above the ordered state provides strong evidence of phonon scattering by Majorana fermions. This scattering depends sensitively on the value of the phonon velocities relative to the characteristic velocity of the low-energy fermionic excitations describing the spin dynamics of the underlying Kitaev magnet. Moreover, our data displays a distinct reduction of anisotropy of the sound attenuation, consistent with randomization, generated by thermally excited $\mathbb{Z}_2$ visons. We demonstrate the potential of phonon dynamics as a promising probe for uncovering fractionalized excitations in $\alpha$-RuCl$_3$ and provide new insights into the $H$-$T$ phase diagram of this material., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures

Parity is a ubiquitous notion in science and serves as a fundamental principle for describing a physical system. Nanometer-scale metal objects are predicted to show dramatic differences in physical properties depending on the electron-number parity. However, the identification of the electron-number parity effects in real metal nanoparticles has remained elusive because of the variations in various features of nanoparticles. Here we report the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) detection of the dynamic effect of the electron-number parity in silver nanoparticles. With theoretical modeling of the NMR relaxation in silver nanoparticles, the measured nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate is found to be proportional to the electron-number-parity-dependent susceptibility and to the temperature. Dark photons are hypothetical massive vector particles that could mix with ordinary photons. The simplest theoretical model is fully characterised by only two parameters: the mass of the dark photon m$_{\gamma^{\mathrm{D}}}$ and its mixing parameter with the photon, $\varepsilon$. The sensitivity of the SHiP detector is reviewed for dark photons in the mass range between 0.002 and 10 GeV. Different production mechanisms are simulated, with the dark photons decaying to pairs of visible fermions, including both leptons and quarks. Exclusion contours are presented and compared with those of past experiments. The SHiP detector is expected to have a unique sensitivity for m$_{\gamma^{\mathrm{D}}}$ ranging between 0.8 and 3.3$^{+0.2}_{-0.5}$ GeV, and $\varepsilon^2$ ranging between $10^{-11}$ and $10^{-17}$.

An osmium chloride with the chemical formula of OsxCl3 (x = 0.81) was synthesized and its crystal structure and thermodynamic properties were investigated. OsxCl3 crystallizes in a layered CdCl2-type structure with the triangular lattice partially occupied by Os ions on average. However, on microscopic length scales, the triangular lattice is composed of nano-domains with a honeycomb arrangement of Os ions, as observed by electron microscopy and Raman scattering experiments. Magnetization and heat capacity measurements revealed an absence of magnetic long-range order down to 0.08 K, while a broad peak in heat capacity at 0.15 K may indicate a short-range order in the local honeycomb lattice. OsxCl3 may exhibit certain aspects of the Kitaev spin liquid that are expected for a perfect honeycomb lattice of osmium trichloride., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures

We propose to build and operate a detector that, for the first time, will measure the process $pp\to\nu X$ at the LHC and search for feebly interacting particles (FIPs) in an unexplored domain. The TI18 tunnel has been identified as a suitable site to perform these measurements due to very low machine-induced background. The detector will be off-axis with respect to the ATLAS interaction point (IP1) and, given the pseudo-rapidity range accessible, the corresponding neutrinos will mostly come from charm decays: the proposed experiment will thus make the first test of the heavy flavour production in a pseudo-rapidity range that is not accessible by the current LHC detectors. In order to efficiently reconstruct neutrino interactions and identify their flavour, the detector will combine in the target region nuclear emulsion technology with scintillating fibre tracking layers and it will adopt a muon identification system based on scintillating bars that will also play the role of a hadronic calorimeter. The time of flight measurement will be achieved thanks to a dedicated timing detector. The detector will be a small-scale prototype of the scattering and neutrino detector (SND) of the SHiP experiment: the operation of this detector will provide an important test of the neutrino reconstruction in a high occupancy environment., Comment: Letter of Intent

The type-II Dirac semimetal PdTe2 was recently reported to be a type-I superconductor with a superconducting transition temperature Tc = 1.65 K. However, the recent results from tunneling and point contact spectroscopy suggested the unusual state of a mixture of type-I and type-II superconductivity. These contradictory results mean that there is no clear picture of the superconducting phase diagram and warrants a detailed investigation of the superconducting phase. We report here the muon spin rotation and relaxation ($\mu$SR) measurements on the superconducting state of the topological Dirac semimetal PdTe2. From $\mu$SR measurements, we find that PdTe2 exhibits mixed type-I/type-II superconductivity. Using these results a phase diagram has been determined. In contrast to previous results where local type-II superconductivity persists up to Hc2 = 600 G, we observed that bulk superconductivity is destroyed above 225 G.

Layered $\alpha$-RuCl3 has been discussed as a proximate Kitaev spin liquid compound. Raman and THz spectroscopy of magnetic excitations confirm that the low-temperature antiferromagnetic ordered phase features a broad Raman continuum, together with two magnon-like excitations at 2.7 and 3.6 meV, respectively. The continuum strength is maximized as long-range order is suppressed by an external magnetic field. The state above the field-induced quantum phase transition around 7.5 T is characterized by a gapped multi-particle continuum out of which a two-particle bound state emerges, together with a well-defined single-particle excitation at lower energy. Exact diagonalization calculations demonstrate that Kitaev and off-diagonal exchange terms in the Fleury-Loudon operator are crucial for the occurrence of these features in the Raman spectra. Our study firmly establishes the partially-polarized quantum disordered character of the high-field phase.

We propose a new method to detect gravitational waves, based on spatial coherence interferometry with stellar light, as opposed to the conventional temporal coherence interferometry with laser sources. The proposed method detects gravitational waves by using two coherent beams of light from a single distant star measured at separate space-based detectors with a long baseline. This method can be applied to either the amplitude or intensity interferometry. This experiment allows for the search of gravitational waves in the lower frequency range of $10^{-6}$ to $10^{-4}$ Hz. In this work, we present the detection sensitivity of the proposed stellar interferometer by taking the detector response and shot and acceleration noises into account. Spin liquids may host emergent quasiparticles, collective excitations of the spin degrees of freedom with characteristic features of Majorana fermions, which experimentally are detectable by broad excitation continua due to spin fractionalization. The latter is predicted for the Kitaev spin liquid, an exactly solvable model with bond-dependent interactions on a two-dimensional honeycomb lattice. Here we report on detailed THz experiments in {\alpha}-RuCl3, identifying these characteristic fingerprints of Majorana fermions. The continuum intensity decreases and finally vanishes on increasing temperature. It partly overlaps with phonon modes representing characteristic sliding and compression modes of the van der Waals bonded molecular layers., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

We investigated SrFeO$_{3-x}$ thin films on a SrTiO$_3$ (001) substrate prepared via pulsed laser epitaxy using an optical spectroscopy technique. The oxygen vacancy level ($x$) was controlled by post-annealing processes at different oxygen partial pressures. We achieved a brownmillerite(BM) structure at $x =$ 0.5 and observed the evolution of the crystal structure from BM into perovskite(PV) as the oxygen concentration increased. We observed the evolution of infrared-active phonons with respect to the oxygen concentration, which was closely related to the structural evolution observed via X-ray diffraction. We identified the phonons using the shell-model calculation. Furthermore, we studied temperature-dependent behaviors of the phonon modes of three representative samples: PV, and two BMs (BM$_{\mathrm{oop}}$ and BM$_{\mathrm{ip}}$) with different orientations of the oxygen vacancy channel. In the BM$_{\mathrm{oop}}$ sample, we observed a phonon mode, which exhibited an unusual red-shift with decreasing temperature; this behavior may have been due to the apical oxygen instability in the FeO$_6$ octahedron. Our results provide important information regarding the ionic conduction mechanism in SrFeO$_{3-x}$ material systems., Comment: 18 pages, 7 figures

We report magnetic, thermodynamic, thermal expansion, and on detailed optical experiments on the layered compound $\alpha$-RuCl$_3$ focusing on the THz and sub-gap optical response across the structural phase transition from the monoclinic high-temperature to the rhombohedral low-temperature structure, where the stacking sequence of the molecular layers is changed. This type of phase transition is characteristic for a variety of tri-halides crystallizing in a layered honeycomb-type structure and so far is unique, as the low-temperature phase exhibits the higher symmetry. One motivation is to unravel the microscopic nature of spin-orbital excitations via a study of temperature and symmetry-induced changes. We document a number of highly unusual findings: A characteristic two-step hysteresis of the structural phase transition, accompanied by a dramatic change of the reflectivity. An electronic excitation, which appears in a narrow temperature range just across the structural phase transition, and a complex dielectric loss spectrum in the THz regime, which could indicate remnants of Kitaev physics. Despite significant symmetry changes across the monoclinic to rhombohedral phase transition, phonon eigenfrequencies and the majority of spin-orbital excitations are not strongly influenced. Obviously, the symmetry of the single molecular layers determine the eigenfrequencies of most of these excitations. Finally, from this combined terahertz, far- and mid-infrared study we try to shed some light on the so far unsolved low energy (< 1eV) electronic structure of the ruthenium $4d^5$ electrons in $\alpha$-RuCl$_3$., Comment: 22 pages, 9 figures

Raman spectroscopy is employed to probe directly the soft rotation and tilting modes, which are two primary order parameters predicted in the hybrid improper ferroelectric material Ca$_3$Mn$_2$O$_7$. We observe a giant softening of the 107-cm$^{-1}$ octahedron tilting mode by 26~cm$^{-1}$, on heating through the structural transition from a ferroelectric to paraelectric orthorhombic phase. This is contrasted by a small softening of the 150-cm$^{-1}$ rotational mode by 6~cm$^{-1}$. In the intermediate phase, the competing soft modes with different symmetries coexist, bringing about many-faceted anomalies in spin excitations and lattice vibrations. Our work demonstrates that the soft rotation and tilt patterns, relying on a phase-transition path, are a key factor in determining ferroelectric, magnetic, and lattice properties of Ca$_3$Mn$_2$O$_7$., Comment: accepted for publication in PRB

We report on thermodynamic, magnetization, and muon spin relaxation measurements of the strong spin-orbit coupled iridate Ba$_3$IrTi$_2$O$_9$, which constitutes a new frustration motif made up a mixture of edge- and corner-sharing triangles. In spite of strong antiferromagnetic exchange interaction of the order of 100~K, we find no hint for long-range magnetic order down to 23 mK. The magnetic specific heat data unveil the $T$-linear and -squared dependences at low temperatures below 1~K. At the respective temperatures, the zero-field muon spin relaxation features a persistent spin dynamics, indicative of unconventional low-energy excitations. A comparison to the $4d$ isostructural compound Ba$_3$RuTi$_2$O$_9$ suggests that a concerted interplay of compass-like magnetic interactions and frustrated geometry promotes a dynamically fluctuating state in a triangle-based iridate., Comment: Physical Review B accepted

We report on terahertz spectroscopy of quantum spin dynamics in $\alpha$-RuCl$_3$, a system proximate to the Kitaev honeycomb model, as a function of temperature and magnetic field. An extended magnetic continuum develops below the structural phase transition at $T_{s2}=62$K. With the onset of a long-range magnetic order at $T_N=6.5$K, spectral weight is transferred to a well-defined magnetic excitation at $\hbar \omega_1 = 2.48$meV, which is accompanied by a higher-energy band at $\hbar \omega_2 = 6.48$meV. Both excitations soften in magnetic field, signaling a quantum phase transition at $B_c=7$T where we find a broad continuum dominating the dynamical response. Above $B_c$, the long-range order is suppressed, and on top of the continuum, various emergent magnetic excitations evolve. These excitations follow clear selection rules and exhibit distinct field dependencies, characterizing the dynamical properties of the field-induced quantum spin liquid.

We report on THz, infrared reflectivity and transmission experiments for wave numbers from 10 to 8000 cm$^{-1}$ ($\sim$ 1 meV - 1 eV) and for temperatures from 5 to 295 K on the Kitaev candidate material {\alpha}-RuCl$_3$. As reported earlier, the compound under investigation passes through a first-order structural phase transition, from a monoclinic high-temperature to a rhombohedral low-temperature phase. The phase transition shows an extreme and unusual hysteretic behavior, which extends from 60 to 166 K. In passing this phase transition, in the complete frequency range investigated we found a significant reflectance change, which amounts almost a factor of two. We provide a broadband spectrum of dielectric constant, dielectric loss and optical conductivity from the THz to the mid infrared regime and study in detail the phonon response and the low-lying electronic density of states. We provide evidence for the onset of an optical energy gap, which is of order 200 meV, in good agreement with the gap derived from measurements of the DC electrical resistivity. We report on zero-field muon spin rotation, electron spin resonance and polarized Raman scattering measurements of the coupled quantum spin ladder Ba2CuTeO6. Zero-field muon spin rotation and electron spin resonance probes disclose a successive crossover from a paramagnetic through a spin-liquid-like into a magnetically ordered state with decreasing temperature. More significantly, the two-magnon Raman response obeys a T-linear scaling relation in its peak energy, linewidth and intensity. This critical scaling behavior presents an experimental signature of proximity to a quantum critical point from an ordered side in Ba2CuTeO6., Comment: Accepted for publication in Phys. Rev. B

Raman scattering has been employed to investigate lattice and magnetic excitations of the honeycomb Kitaev material $\alpha$-RuCl$_3$ and its Heisenberg counterpart CrCl$_3$. Our phonon Raman spectra give evidence for a first-order structural transition from a monoclinic to a rhombohedral structure for both compounds. Significantly, only $\alpha$-RuCl$_3$ features a large thermal hysteresis, consistent with the formation of a wide phase of coexistence. In the related temperature interval of $70-170$ K, we observe a hysteretic behavior of magnetic excitations as well. The stronger magnetic response in the rhombohedral compared to the monoclinic phase evidences a coupling between the crystallographic structure and low-energy magnetic response. Our results demonstrate that the Kitaev magnetism concomitant with fractionalized excitations is susceptible to small variations of bonding geometry., Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures, To appear in PRB

$\alpha$-RuCl$_3$ has attracted enormous attention since it has been proposed as a prime candidate to study fractionalized magnetic excitations akin to Kitaev's honeycomb-lattice spin liquid. We have performed a detailed specific-heat investigation at temperatures down to $0.4$ K in applied magnetic fields up to $9$ T for fields parallel to the $ab$ plane. We find a suppression of the zero-field antiferromagnetic order, together with an increase of the low-temperature specific heat, with increasing field up to $\mu_0H_c\approx 6.9$ T. Above $H_c$, the magnetic contribution to the low-temperature specific heat is strongly suppressed, implying the opening of a spin-excitation gap. Our data point toward a field-induced quantum critical point (QCP) at $H_c$; this is supported by universal scaling behavior near $H_c$. Remarkably, the data also reveal the existence of a small characteristic energy scale well below $1$~meV above which the excitation spectrum changes qualitatively. The SHiP experiment is designed to search for very weakly interacting particles beyond the Standard Model which are produced in a 400 GeV/c proton beam dump at the CERN SPS. An essential task for the experiment is to keep the Standard Model background level to less than 0.1 event after $2\times 10^{20}$ protons on target. In the beam dump, around $10^{11}$ muons will be produced per second. The muon rate in the spectrometer has to be reduced by at least four orders of magnitude to avoid muon-induced combinatorial background. A novel active muon shield is used to magnetically deflect the muons out of the acceptance of the spectrometer. We report a $^{35}$Cl nuclear magnetic resonance study in the honeycomb lattice, $\alpha$-RuCl$_3$, a material that has been suggested to potentially realize a Kitaev quantum spin liquid (QSL) ground state. Our results provide direct evidence that $\alpha$-RuCl$_3$ exhibits a magnetic field-induced QSL. For fields larger than $\sim 10$ T a spin-gap opens up while resonance lines remain sharp, evidencing that spins are quantum disordered and locally fluctuating. The spin gap increases linearly with increasing magnetic field, reaching $\sim50$ K at 15 T, and is nearly isotropic with respect to the field direction. The unusual rapid increase of the spin gap with increasing field and its isotropic nature are incompatible with conventional magnetic ordering and in particular exclude that the ground state is a fully polarized ferromagnet. Hyper-Kamiokande consists of two identical water-Cherenkov detectors of total 520~kt with the first one in Japan at 295~km from the J-PARC neutrino beam with 2.5$^{\textrm{o}}$ Off-Axis Angles (OAAs), and the second one possibly in Korea in a later stage. Having the second detector in Korea would benefit almost all areas of neutrino oscillation physics mainly due to longer baselines. There are several candidate sites in Korea with baselines of 1,000$\sim$1,300~km and OAAs of 1$^{\textrm{o}}$$\sim$3$^{\textrm{o}}$. We conducted sensitivity studies on neutrino oscillation physics for a second detector, either in Japan (JD $\times$ 2) or Korea (JD + KD) and compared the results with a single detector in Japan. Leptonic CP violation sensitivity is improved especially when the CP is non-maximally violated. The larger matter effect at Korean candidate sites significantly enhances sensitivities to non-standard interactions of neutrinos and mass ordering determination. Current studies indicate the best sensitivity is obtained at Mt. Bisul (1,088~km baseline, $1.3^\circ$ OAA). Thanks to a larger (1,000~m) overburden than the first detector site, clear improvements to sensitivities for solar and supernova relic neutrino searches are expected., Comment: 102 pages, 49 figures. Anderson proposed structural topology in frustrated magnets hosting novel quantum spin liquids (QSLs). The QSL state is indeed exactly derived by fractionalizing the spin excitation into spinless Majorana fermions in a perfect two dimensional (2D) honeycomb lattice, the so-called Kitaev lattice, and its experimental realisation is eagerly being pursued. Here we, for the first time, report the Kitaev lattice stacking with van der Waals (vdW) bonding in a high quality {\alpha}-RuCl$_3$ crystal using x-ray and neutron diffractions. Even in absence of apparent monoclinic distortion, the system exhibits antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering below 6.5 K, likely due to minute magnetic interaction from trigonal distortion and/or interlayer coupling additionally to the Kitaev Hamiltonian. We also demonstrate 2D Ising-like critical behaviors near the N\'eel temperature in the order parameter and specific heat, capturing the characteristics of short-range spin-spin correlations underlying the Kitaev model. Our findings hold promise for unveiling enigmatic physics emerging from the Kitaev QSL.

The fractionalization of elementary excitations in quantum spin systems is a central theme in current condensed matter physics. The Kitaev honeycomb spin model provides a prominent example of exotic fractionalized quasiparticles, composed of itinerant Majorana fermions and gapped gauge fluxes. However, identification of the Majorana fermions in a three-dimensional honeycomb lattice remains elusive. Here we report spectroscopic signatures of fractional excitations in the harmonic-honeycomb iridates $\beta$- and $\gamma$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$. Using polarization resolved Raman spectroscopy, we find that the dynamical Raman response of $\beta$- and $\gamma$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$ features a broad scattering continuum with distinct polarization and composition dependence. The temperature dependence of the Raman spectral weight is dominated by the thermal damping of fermionic excitations. We present a detailed local probe study of the magnetic order in the oxychalcogenide La2O2Fe2OSe2 utilizing 57Fe Moessbauer, 139La NMR, and muon spin relaxation spectroscopy. This system can be regarded as an insulating reference system of the Fe arsenide and chalcogenide superconductors. From the combination of the local probe techniques we identify a non-collinear magnetic structure similar to Sr2F2Fe2OS2. The analysis of the magnetic order parameter yields an ordering temperature TN = 90.1 K and a critical exponent of beta = 0.133, which is close to the 2D Ising universality class as reported in the related oxychalcogenide family.

In the spin ladder compound BiCu$_2$PO$_6$ there exists a decisive dynamics of spin excitations that we classify and characterize using inelastic light scattering. We observe low-energy singlets and a broad triplon continuum extending from 36 cm$^{-1}$ to 700 cm$^{-1}$ in ($aa$), ($bb$), and ($cc$) light scattering polarizations. Though isolated spin ladder physics can roughly account for the observed excitations at high energies, frustration and interladder interactions need to be considered to fully describe the spectral distribution and scattering selection rules at low and intermediate energies. More significantly, an interladder singlet bound mode at 24 cm$^{-1}$, lying below the continuum, shows its largest scattering intensity in interladder ($ab$) polarization. In contrast, two intraladder bound states at 62 cm$^{-1}$ and 108 cm$^{-1}$ with energies comparable to the continuum are observed with light polarization along the leg ($bb$) and the rung ($cc$). We attribute the rich spectrum of singlet bound modes to a melting of a dimer crystal. We present high-field magnetization and $^{79}$Br nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) and $^{125}$Te nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) studies in the weakly coupled Cu$^{2+}$ ($S=1/2$) tetrahedral system Cu$_2$Te$_2$O$_5$Br$_2$. The field-induced level crossing effects were observed by the magnetization measurements in a long-ranged magnetically ordered state which was confirmed by a strong divergence of the spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T1 at T0=13.5 K. In the paramagnetic state, 1/T1 reveals an effective singlet-triplet spin gap much larger than that observed by static bulk measurements. Our results imply that the inter- and the intra-tetrahedral interactions compete, but at the same time they cooperate strengthening effectively the local intratetrahedral exchange couplings. Low temperature specific heat, C, in magnetic fields up to Hc2 is reported for underdoped Ba(Fe0.955Co0.045)2As2 (Tc=8 K) and for three overdoped samples Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 (x=0.103, 0.13, and 0.15, Tc=17.2, 16.5, and 11.7 K respectively). Previous measurements of thermal conductivity (as a function of temperature and field) and penetration depth on comparable composition samples gave some disagreement as to whether there was fully gapped/nodal behavior in the under-/overdoped materials respectively. The present work shows that the measured behavior of the specific heat gamma (proportional to C/T as T->0, i. e. a measure of the electronic density of states at the Fermi energy) as a function of field approximately obeys gamma proportional to H**(0.5 +- 0.1), similar to the Volovik effect for nodal superconductors, for both the underdoped and the most overdoped Co samples. However, for the two overdoped compositions x=0.103 and 0.13, the low field (H < 10 T) data show a Volovik-like behavior of gamma proportional to H**(0.3-0.4), followed by an inflection point, followed at higher fields by gamma proportional to H**1. We argue that within the 2-band theory of superconductivity, an inflection point may occur if the interband coupling is dominant., Comment: accepted for publication in Physical Review B

Lattice dynamics and magnetic excitations are investigated to elucidate the origin of magneto-dielectric effects in the S=1/2 two-dimensional quantum spin compound K$_2$V$_3$O$_8$. We find evidence for lattice instabilities at 110 K and 60 K as optical phonon anomalies and a soft mode at 26 cm$^{-1}$ in A$_1$ symmetry. Two-magnon excitations in B$_1$ symmetry show an unconventional double-peak structure and temperature dependence. We performed temperature dependent X-ray linear dichroism (XLD) experiments on an iron pnictide system, Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ with $x$=0.00 and 0.05, to experimentally verify existence of orbital ordering (OO). We observed clear XLD in polarization dependent X-ray absorption spectra of Fe $L$ edges. By exploiting the difference in the temperature dependent behaviors, we were able to separate OO and structure contributions to XLD. The observed OO signal indicates different occupation numbers for $d_{yz}$ and $d_{zx}$ orbitals and supports existence of a ferro-OO. The results are also consistent with the theoretical prediction. Moreover, we find substantial OO signal above the transition temperature, which suggests that OO fluctuation exists well above the transition temperature.

In this work, we report the simulation of C4+ irradiation and its significant effects towards the enhancement of the critical current density in BaFe1.9Ni0.1As2 single crystals. BaFe1.9Ni0.1As2 single crystals with and without the C-implantation were characterized by magneto-transport and magnetic measurements up to 13 T over a wide range of temperatures below and above the superconducting critical temperature, Tc. It is found that the C-implantation causes little change in Tc, but it can greatly enhance the in-field critical current density by a factor of up to 1.5 with enhanced flux jumping at 2 K. Our Monte Carlo simulation results show that all the C ions end up in a well defined layer, causing extended defects and vacancies at the layer, but few defects elsewhere on the implantation paths. This type of defect distribution is distinct from the columnar defects produced by heavy ion implantation. Furthermore, the normal state resistivity is enhanced by the light C4+ irradiation, while the upper critical field, Hc2, the irreversibility field, Hirr, and Tc were affected very little., Comment: 14 [pages, 7 figures

The vortex liquid-to-glass transition has been studied in Ba0.72K0.28Fe2As2, Ba0.9Co0.1Fe2As2, and Ba(Fe0.45Ni0.05)2As2 single crystal with superconducting transition temperature, Tc = 31.7, 17.3, and 18 K, respectively, by magnetoresistance measurements. For temperatures below Tc, the resistivity curves were measured in magnetic fields within the range of 0 \leq B \leq 13 T, and the pinning potential was scaled according to a modified model for vortex liquid resistivity. Good scaling of the resistivity {\rho}(B, T) and the effective pinning energy U0(B,T) was obtained with the critical exponents s and B0. The vortex state is three-dimensional at temperatures lower than a characteristic temperature T*. The vortex phase diagram was determined based on the evolution of the vortex-glass transition temperature Tg with magnetic field and the upper critical field, Hc2. We found that non-magnetic K doping results in a high glass line close to the Hc2, while magnetic Ni and Co doping cause a low glass line which is far away from the Hc2. Our results suggest that non-magnetic induced disorder is more favourable for enhancement of pinning strength compared to magnetic induced disorder. We present evidence for a concomitant structural and ferroelectric transformation around $T_S\sim 360$ K in multiferroic BiFeO$_3$/LaAlO$_3$ thin films close to the tetragonal phase. Phonon excitations are investigated by using Raman scattering as a function of temperature. The low-energy phonon modes at 180-260 cm$^{-1}$ related to the FeO$_6$ octahedron tilting show anomalous behaviors upon cooling through $T_S$; (i) a large hardening amounting to 15 cm$^{-1}$, (ii) an increase of intensity by one order of magnitude, and (iii) an appearance of a dozen new modes. In contrast, the high-frequency modes exhibit only weak anomalies. This suggests an intimate coupling of octahedron tilting to ferroelectricity leading to a simultaneous change of structural and ferroelectric properties., Comment: 4 pages, 5figures

We report ac susceptibility and high-frequency electron spin resonance (ESR) measurements on the geometrically frustrated compound Ba$_3$NbFe$_3$Si$_2$O$_{14}$ with the N\'{e}el temperature $T_N=27 K$. An unusually large frequency-dependence of ac susceptibility in the temperature range of 20 - 100 K reveals a spin-glass-like behavior, signalling the presence of frustration related slow magnetic fluctuations. ESR experiments show a multi-step magnetic and spin chirality ordering process. For temperatures above 30 K, the weak temperature dependence of the ESR linewidth $\Delta H_{pp}\propto T^{-p}$ with $p=0.8$ evidences the development of short-range correlated spin clusters. The critical broadening with $p =1.8$, persisting down to 14 K, indicates the coexistence of the short-range ordered spin clusters within a helically ordered state. Below 9.5 K, the anomalously large decrease of the linewidth reveals the stabilization of a long-range ordered state with one chirality., Comment: one-columb 10 pages, 3 figures

We report $^{77}$Se and $^{63}$Cu nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) investigation on the charge-density-wave (CDW) superconductor Cu$_x$TiSe$_2$ ($x=0.05$ and 0.07). At high magnetic fields where superconductivity is suppressed, the temperature dependence of $^{77}$Se and $^{63}$Cu spin-lattice relaxation rates 1/T_{1}$ follow a linear relation. The slope of $^{77}1/T_{1}$ vs \emph{T} increases with the Cu doping. This can be described by a modified Korringa relation which suggests the significance of electronic correlations and the Se 4\emph{p}- and Ti 3\emph{d}-band contribution to the density of states at the Fermi level in the studied compounds., Comment: Revised manuscript. We report on Raman scattering measurements of the A-site ordered YBaMn2O6 in the wide temperature range of 10-650K. Upon cooling almost all phonon modes show pronounced temperature dependencies of frequency, linewidth, and scattering intensity. This suggests that the octahedra tilting, Mn-O bond angles and lengths vary with temperature in a concerted way. The remarkable feature is that the high-temperature metallic and the charge and orbital ordered (CO-OO) states coexist down to T_N=195K. In the antiferromagnetic state zone-folded modes are induced by the CO-OO superstructure and the phonon modes undergo an anomalous softening and narrowing.
