Abstract

Not only are many Mycobacteria pathogens, but they can act as strong non‐specific immunopotentiators, generating beneficial effects on the pathogenesis of some diseases. However, there has been no direct evidence of the effect of mycobacterial species on colorectal cancer (CRC). Herein, we showed that there may be a meaningful inverse correlation between the incidence of tuberculosis and CRC based on global statistics and that heat‐killed Mycobacterial tuberculosis and live Mycobacterium bovis (Bacillus Calmette–Guérin strain) could ameliorate CRC development. In particular, using a faecal microbiota transplantation and a comparison between separate housing and cohousing, we demonstrated that the gut microbiota is involved in the protective effects. The microbial alterations can be elucidated by the modulation of antimicrobial activities including those of the Reg3 family genes. Furthermore, interleukin‐22 production by T helper cells contributed to the anti‐inflammatory activity of Mycobacteria. Our results revealed a novel role of Mycobacteria involving gut microbial alterations in dampening inflammation‐associated CRC and an immunological mechanism underlying the interaction between microbes and host immunity. 39. How Design Standardization CSFs Can Impact Project Performance of Capital Projects.

Abstract

Standardization is a commonplace idea today; however, capital projects have not been able to achieve high levels of facility design standardization. The Construction Industry Institute (CII) identified 15 standardization critical success factors (CSFs) for capital projects, particularly the upstream, midstream, and mining sector, to help the practitioners achieve higher levels of facility design standardization in capital projects. However, there is a need to better understand the CSFs comprehensively by analyzing data from actual standardized projects. To fill this gap, this study examined CSFs' degrees of accomplishment, as well as project performance scores for different metrics, and have analyzed a correlation between CSFs' accomplishment and the project performance of 43 projects. The results show that the more standardization CSFs are accomplished, the better the project performances. This research also identified which CSFs are commonly accomplished and which CSFs are challenging to accomplish by analyzing the degree of accomplishment of each CSF. The results show that Basic Engineering Design Data, Operations and Maintenance, Technology Maturity, and Experience and Capability of Project Team are the CSFs that are more commonly accomplished, whereas Constructability of Standardization and Feasibility Analysis of Standardization are the CSFs that the industry finds difficult to accomplish. 47. Culture and organizational culture in the construction industry : a literature review

Abstract

The effectiveness and competitive advantage of an organization/project can be enhanced when its members possess an understanding, respect, acceptance, and capacity to manage cross-cultural differences. Ignoring or failing to manage such differences may lead to many problems in the project (e.g., project delays and productivity decrease). In fact, international/transnational projects involving participants from diverse political, legal, economic, and cultural backgrounds are on the rise. Hence, firms should be cross-culturally competent and capable of managing in contrasting cultural factors. However, a recent study conducted in 2013 by the Construction Industry Institute (CII) reported that one of the major concerns of construction professionals is a widespread lack of understanding of foreign cultures, ethnicities, and languages. The aim of this paper is to present a comprehensive review of the literature on cultural aspects in the construction industry so as to identify the knowledge gaps and to suggest recommendations for future research. To do so, the authors have identified and compared major studies on cultural factors. From the comparison, the authors have identified the categories that are considered the most central to understanding cultural differences; they are, “group attachment and relations,” “authority and status,” “uncertainty and rules,” “gender roles and assertiveness,” and “time and future orientation.” The authors also summarize the current research topics in culture in construction and recommend ideas for future research into culture as it pertains to a construction context.
