Examining teachers' knowledge on a large scale involves addressing substantial measurement and logistical issues; thus, existing teacher knowledge assessments have mainly consisted of selected-response items because of their ease of scoring. Although open-ended responses could capture a more complex understanding of and provide further insights into teachers' thinking, scoring these responses is expensive and time consuming, which limits their use in large-scale studies. In this study, we investigated whether a novel statistical approach, topic modeling, could be used to score teachers' open-ended responses and if so, whether these scores would capture nuances of teachers' understanding. To test this hypothesis, we used topic modeling to analyze teachers' responses to a proportional reasoning task and examined the associations of the topics identified through this method with categories identified by a separate qualitative analysis of the same data as well as teachers' performance on a measure of ratios and proportional relationships. Our findings suggest that topic modeling seemed to capture nuances of teachers' responses and that such nuances differentiated teachers' performance on the same concept. We discuss the implications of this study for education research.

In this article, we describe results of a reanalysis of two randomized studies that tested the effects of enhanced anchored instruction (EAI) on the fractions computation performance of students in special education resource rooms and inclusive mathematics classrooms. Latent class analysis and latent transition analysis classified students according to error subtypes and tracked their performance patterns. Results indicated that EAI was more effective than business as usual in reducing combining errors (e.g., adding denominators) and denominator errors (e.g., not finding common denominator) of students with disabilities (SWD) and students without disabilities in both settings. SWD in inclusive classrooms scored higher on the pretest than SWD in resource rooms, but EAI reduced the disparity on the posttest. An important additional finding revealed that the SWD who received more support from special education teachers in inclusive classrooms scored higher and made fewer errors than the SWD who were provided only limited support. AbstractBackground: While laypersons can play a crucial role in administering naloxone in opioid overdoses, they must be recruited and trained to effectively manage overdose events as good Samaritans. This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of a technology-based intervention that recruited and trained laypersons to administer naloxone. Methods: Opioid Rapid Response System (ORRS) was an online recruitment and training intervention which capitalized on social cognitive theory and a digital media engagement model to mobilize laypersons to administer intranasal naloxone. ORRS was developed based on a randomized waitlisted controlled trial (N = 220). This secondary analysis is a within-group, extended-baseline assessment of the waitlisted group (n = 106), considering that they served as their own control prior to receiving the training. ORRS was conducted in five counties of Indiana with adults who did not self-identify as a certified first responder. Five indices were generated from 23 variables: knowledge of overdose signs, knowledge of overdose management, self-efficacy in responding, concerns about responding, and intent to respond. Paired t-test compared changes between 3 timepoints. Results: Three indices had significantly greater increases associated with training compared to extended baseline: recognizing opioid overdose signs (difference = 0.08; 95%CI = 0.02, 0.15; t = 2.48; p = 0.01); knowledge of overdose management (difference = 0.27; 95%CI = 0.18, 0.35; t = 5.99; p < 0.01); and self-efficacy in overdose management (difference = 0.68; 95%CI = 0.45, 0.91; t = 5.78; p < 0.01). Concerns related to overdose management significantly decreased as expected (difference = −1.53; 95%CI = −1.86, −1.21; t = −9.27; p < 0.01). Conclusions: ORRS provided strong support for self-efficacy, concerns, and knowledge related to overdose management, and the digital modality accelerates largescale dissemination. With growing interest in promoting skills related to the scientific process, we studied performance in solving ill-defined problems demonstrated by graduating biochemistry majors at a public, minority-serving university. As adoption of techniques for facilitating the attainment of higher-order learning objectives broadens, so too does the need to appropriately measure and understand student performance. We extended previous validation of the Individual Problem Solving Assessment (IPSA) and administered multiple versions of the IPSA across two semesters of biochemistry courses. A final version was taken by majors just before program exit, and student responses on that version were analyzed both quantitatively and qualitatively. This mixed-methods study quantifies student performance in scientific problem solving, while probing the qualitative nature of unsatisfactory solutions. Of the five domains measured by the IPSA, we found that average graduates were only successful in two areas: evaluating given experimental data to state results and reflecting on performance after the solution to the problem was provided. The primary difficulties in each domain were quite different. The most widespread challenge for students was to design an investigation that rationally aligned with a given hypothesis. We also extend the findings into pedagogical recommendations.

Dating violence is an important public health concern and is considered to be a form of school violence. While digital technologies have enabled perpetrators of dating violence to target their victims online (cyber dating abuse), little is known about how this form of perpetration relates to specific adolescent risk behaviors. This brief research report focuses on the associations between substance use, sexual behaviors, deviant behaviors, self-reported health, and cyber dating abuse perpetration. Participants included 705 ethnically diverse adolescents (n = 408; 57.9% "female") in Southeast Texas. Having had sexual intercourse or using alcohol or drugs before having sex was significantly linked with cyber dating abuse perpetration, as was poor physical health, and substance use. Consistent with limited research, we found a link between cyber dating abuse and engagement in bullying behaviors. The discussion section includes suggestions for school nurse practice and further research.
