Abstract

We obtained the spectral function of very high quality natural graphite single crystals using angle resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES). A clear separation of non-bonding and bonding bands and asymmetric lineshape are observed. The asymmetric lineshapes are well accounted for by the finite photoelectron escape depth and the band structure. The extracted width of the spectral function (inverse of the photohole life time) near the K point is, beyond the maximum phonon energy, approximately proportional to the energy as expected from the linear density of states near the Fermi energy. The upper bound for the electron-phonon coupling constant is about 0.2, a much smaller value than the previously reported one., Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

We observe, with angle-resolved photoemission, a dramatic change in the electronic structure of two C60 monolayers, deposited respectively on Ag (111) and (100) substrates, and similarly doped with potassium to half-filling of the C60 lowest unoccupied molecular orbital. The Fermi surface symmetry, the bandwidth, and the curvature of the dispersion at Gamma point are different. Orientations of the C60 molecules on the two substrates are known to be the main structural difference between the two monolayers, and we present new band-structure calculations for some of these orientations. We conclude that orientations play a key role in the electronic structure of fullerides., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

The aim of this research is to present a new methodology for the systematic de sign of compound protocols from their parts. Some security properties can be made accumulative, i.e. can be put together without interfering with one another, by carefully selecting the mechanisms which implement them. Among them are authentication, secrecy and non-repudiation. Based on this observation, a set of accumulative protocol mechanisms called protocol primitives are proposed and their correctness is verified. These protocol primitives are obtained from common mechanisms found in many security protocols such as challenge and response. They have been carefully designed not to interfere with each other. This feature makes them flexible building blocks in the proposed methodology. Equipped with these protocol primitives, a scheme for the systematic construction of a complicated protocol from simple protocol primitives is presented, namely, design by composition. This design scheme allows the combination of several simple protocol parts into a complicated protocol without destroying the security properties established by each independent part. In other words, the composition frame work permits the specification of a complex protocol to be decomposed into the specifications of simpler components, and thus makes the design and verification of the protocol easier to handle. Benefits of this approach are similar to those gained when using a modular approach to software development. The applicability and practicality of the proposed methodology are validated through many design examples of protocols found in many different environments and with various initial assumptions. The method is not aimed to cover all existent design issues, but a reasonable range of protocols is addressed.

Abstract

Researchers have tested Lignocellulose derived material (LDMs) from different sources ranging from agricultural to wood in order to facilitate the adsorption of chemical contaminants, such as heavy metals and dyes from water bodies, to eradicate water contamination. However, different methods have been employed to modify the nature of the LDMs to enable their suitability for contaminants removal. Among all these methods, acid modification of LDMs has gained a lot of attention. This review focused on the use of acid modification LDMs for the removal of anionic and cationic dyes, and heavy metals in water. The characteracerization techniques employed in studying the morphology and functional groups of the LDMs were discussed. The adsorption dynamics and mechanisms of reported studies were extensively summarized. The reported adsorption capacity of unmodified LDMs in the available liturature is in the range of 4.44–156.00 mg/g while for the modified is between 80.05–250.01 mg/g for dye removal. The adsorption capacity of modified LDMs reported was 1.60–18.03 times higher than the unmodified because of additional functional groups such as -SO3 from sulphuric acid modification. Abstract

This paper presents the influence of electron elastic scattering models, electron thermalization models, and chemical parameters on Geant4-DNA simulations of liquid water radiolysis under mega-electron-volt electron irradiation. The radiochemical yields are simulated using a new Geant4-DNA example. In particular, the influence of the new elastic scattering model recently developed is presented as well as the influence of improved electron thermalization models. The influence of a new chemistry constructor using parameters of another Monte Carlo track structure code is also described. The results calculated using these different models are compared with each other and with experimental data. For sub-mega-electron-volt electron simulations, the combination of the "G4EmDNAPhysics_option2" physics constructor with the recently developed elastic scattering model, the Meesungnoen electron thermalization model, and the "G4EmDNAChemistry_option1" chemistry constructor is recommended. Abstract

The advent of immune-checkpoint inhibitors (ICI) in modern oncology has significantly improved survival in several cancer settings. A subgroup of women with breast cancer (BC) has immunogenic infiltration of lymphocytes with expression of programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1). These patients may potentially benefit from ICI targeting the programmed death 1 (PD-1)/PD-L1 signaling axis. The use of tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) as predictive and prognostic biomarkers has been under intense examination. Emerging data suggest that TILs are associated with response to both cytotoxic treatments and immunotherapy, particularly for patients with triple-negative BC. In this review from The International Immuno-Oncology Biomarker Working Group, we discuss (a) the biological understanding of TILs, (b) their analytical and clinical validity and efforts toward the clinical utility in BC, and (c) the current status of PD-L1 and TIL testing across different continents, including experiences from low-to-middle-income countries, incorporating also the view of a patient advocate.
