Protein expression levels optimize cell fitness: Too low an expression level of essential proteins will slow growth by compromising essential processes; whereas overexpression slows growth by increasing the metabolic load. This trade-off naively predicts that cells maximize their fitness by sufficiency, expressing just enough of each essential protein for function. We test this prediction in the naturally-competent bacterium Acinetobacter baylyi by characterizing the proliferation dynamics of essential-gene knockouts at a single-cell scale (by imaging) as well as at a genome-wide scale (by TFNseq). In these experiments, cells proliferate for multiple generations as target protein levels are diluted from their endogenous levels. This approach facilitates a proteome-scale analysis of protein overabundance. As predicted by the Robustness-Load Trade-Off (RLTO) model, we find that roughly 70% of essential proteins are overabundant and that overabundance increases as the expression level decreases, the signature prediction of the model. These results reveal that robustness plays a fundamental role in determining the expression levels of essential genes and that overabundance is a key mechanism for ensuring robust growth.

It has been previously advocated that the presence of the daily and annual modulations of the axion flux on the Earth's surface may dramatically change the strategy of the axion searches. The arguments were based on the so-called Axion Quark Nugget (AQN) dark matter model which was originally put forward to explain the similarity of the dark and visible cosmological matter densities $\Omega_{\rm dark}\sim \Omega_{\rm visible}$. In this framework, the population of galactic axions with mass $ 10^{-6} {\rm eV}\lesssim m_a\lesssim 10^{-3}{\rm eV}$ and velocity $\langle v_a\rangle\sim 10^{-3} c$ will be accompanied by axions with typical velocities $\langle v_a\rangle\sim 0.6 c$ emitted by AQNs. Furthermore, in this framework, it has also been argued that the AQN-induced axion daily modulation (in contrast with the conventional WIMP paradigm) could be as large as $(10-20)\%$, which represents the main motivation for the present investigation. We argue that the daily modulations along with the broadband detection strategy can be very useful tools for the discovery of such relativistic axions. The data from the CAST-CAPP detector have been used following such arguments. Unfortunately, due to the dependence of the amplifier chain on temperature-dependent gain drifts and other factors, we could not conclusively show the presence or absence of a dark sector-originated daily modulation. Despite extensive experimental efforts over the past two decades, the quest for Majorana fermions in superconductors remains inconclusive. We propose an experimental method that can conclusively confirm, or rule out, the existence of these quasiparticles: Firstly, we shift focus from superconductors, whose very topological nature is disputed, to the unambiguous topological superfluid $^3$He. Secondly, we identify the interaction between surface waves and the chiral Majorana current in the bulk of a topological superfluid of varying density. The proposed experiment provides a path towards the detection of the Majorana fermion, an 80-year-old theoretical prediction. It is realistically achievable based on the advent of microscopic superfluid resonators coupled to optical cavities. The CAST-CAPP axion haloscope, operating at CERN inside the CAST dipole magnet, has searched for axions in the 19.74 $\mu$eV to 22.47 $\mu$eV mass range. The detection concept follows the Sikivie haloscope principle, where Dark Matter axions convert into photons within a resonator immersed in a magnetic field. The CAST-CAPP resonator is an array of four individual rectangular cavities inserted in a strong dipole magnet, phase-matched to maximize the detection sensitivity. Here we report on the data acquired for 4124 h from 2019 to 2021. Each cavity is equipped with a fast frequency tuning mechanism of 10 MHz/min between 4.774 GHz and 5.434 GHz. In the present work, we exclude axion-photon couplings for virialized galactic axions down to $g_{a{\gamma}{\gamma}} = 8 \times {10^{-14}}$ $GeV^{-1}$ at the 90% confidence level. We investigate the effectiveness of the Inverse Laplace Transform (ILT) analysis method to extract the distribution of relaxation rates from nuclear magnetic resonance data with stretched exponential relaxation. Stretched-relaxation is a hallmark of a distribution of relaxation rates, and an analytical expression exists for this distribution for the case of a spin-1/2 nucleus. We compare this theoretical distribution with those extracted via the ILT method for several values of the stretching exponent and at different levels of experimental noise. The ILT accurately captures the distributions for $\beta \lesssim 0.7$, and for signal to noise ratios greater than $\sim 40$; however the ILT distributions tend to introduce artificial oscillatory components. We further use the ILT approach to analyze stretched relaxation for spin $I>1/2$ and find that the distributions are accurately captured by the theoretical expression for $I=1/2$. We use the NewHorizon simulation to study the redshift evolution of bar properties and fractions within galaxies in the stellar masses range $M_{\star} = 10^{7.25} - 10^{11.4} \ \rm{M}_{\odot}$ over the redshift range $z = 0.25 - 1.3$. We select disc galaxies using stellar kinematics as a proxy for galaxy morphology. We employ two different automated bar detection methods, coupled with visual inspection, resulting in observable bar fractions of $f_{\rm bar} = 0.070_{{-0.012}}^{{+0.018}}$ at $z\sim$ 1.3, decreasing to $f_{\rm bar} = 0.011_{{-0.003}}^{{+0.014}}$ at $z\sim$ 0.25. Only one galaxy is visually confirmed as strongly barred in our sample. This bar is hosted by the most massive disk and only survives from $z=1.3$ down to $z=0.7$. Such a low bar fraction, in particular amongst Milky Way-like progenitors, highlights a missing bars problem, shared by literally all cosmological simulations with spatial resolution $<$100 pc to date. The analysis of linear growth rates, rotation curves and derived summary statistics of the stellar, gas and dark matter components suggest that galaxies with stellar masses below $10^{9.5}-10^{10} \ \rm{M}_{\odot}$ in NewHorizon appear to be too dominated by dark matter to form a bar, while more massive galaxies typically have formed large bulges that prevent bar persistence at low redshift. In the standard Lambda-CDM paradigm, dwarf galaxies are expected to be dark-matter-rich, as baryonic feedback is thought to quickly drive gas out of their shallow potential wells and quench star formation at early epochs. Recent observations of local dwarfs with extremely low dark matter content appear to contradict this picture, potentially bringing the validity of the standard model into question. We use NewHorizon, a high-resolution cosmological simulation, to demonstrate that sustained stripping of dark matter, in tidal interactions between a massive galaxy and a dwarf satellite, naturally produces dwarfs that are dark-matter-deficient, even though their initial dark matter fractions are normal. The process of dark matter stripping is responsible for the large scatter in the halo-to-stellar mass relation in the dwarf regime. The degree of stripping is driven by the closeness of the orbit of the dwarf around its massive companion and, in extreme cases, produces dwarfs with halo-to-stellar mass ratios as low as unity, consistent with the findings of recent observational studies. ~30 per cent of dwarfs show some deviation from normal dark matter fractions due to dark matter stripping, with 10 per cent showing high levels of dark matter deficiency (Mhalo/M*<10). Given their close orbits, a significant fraction of dark-matter-deficient dwarfs merge with their massive companions (e.g. ~70 per cent merge over timescales of ~3.5 Gyrs), with the dark-matter-deficient population being constantly replenished by new interactions between dwarfs and massive companions. Dwarf galaxies (M*<10^9 Msun) are key drivers of mass assembly in high mass galaxies, but relatively little is understood about the assembly of dwarf galaxies themselves. Using the \textsc{NewHorizon} cosmological simulation (40 pc spatial resolution), we investigate how mergers and fly-bys drive the mass assembly and structural evolution of around 1000 field and group dwarfs up to z=0.5. We find that, while dwarf galaxies often exhibit disturbed morphologies (5 and 20 per cent are disturbed at z=1 and z=3 respectively), only a small proportion of the morphological disturbances seen in dwarf galaxies are driven by mergers at any redshift (for 10^9 Msun, mergers drive only 20 per cent morphological disturbances). They are instead primarily the result of interactions that do not end in a merger (e.g. fly-bys). Given the large fraction of apparently morphologically disturbed dwarf galaxies which are not, in fact, merging, this finding is particularly important to future studies identifying dwarf mergers and post-mergers morphologically at intermediate and high redshifts. Dwarfs typically undergo one major and one minor merger between z=5 and z=0.5, accounting for 10 per cent of their total stellar mass. Mergers can also drive moderate star formation enhancements at lower redshifts (3 or 4 times at z=1), but this accounts for only a few per cent of stellar mass in the dwarf regime given their infrequency. Low-surface-brightness galaxies (LSBGs) -- defined as systems that are fainter than the surface-brightness limits of past wide-area surveys -- form the overwhelming majority of galaxies in the dwarf regime (M* < 10^9 MSun). Using NewHorizon, a high-resolution cosmological simulation, we study the origin of LSBGs and explain why LSBGs at similar stellar mass show the large observed spread in surface brightness. New Horizon galaxies populate a well-defined locus in the surface brightness -- stellar mass plane, with a spread of ~3 mag arcsec^-2, in agreement with deep SDSS Stripe data. Galaxies with fainter surface brightnesses today are born in regions of higher dark-matter density. This results in faster gas accretion and more intense star formation at early epochs. The stronger resultant supernova feedback flattens gas profiles at a faster rate which, in turn, creates shallower stellar profiles (i.e. more diffuse systems) more rapidly. As star formation declines towards late epochs (z<1), the larger tidal perturbations and ram pressure experienced by these systems (due to their denser local environments) accelerate the divergence in surface brightness, by increasing their effective radii and reducing star formation respectively. A small minority of dwarfs depart from the main locus towards high surface brightnesses, making them detectable in past wide surveys. These systems have anomalously high star-formation rates, triggered by recent, fly-by or merger-driven starbursts. The electronic structure of plutonium metal and its compounds pose a grand challenge for a fundamental understanding of the Pu-5$f$ electron character. For 30 years the plutonium chalcogenides have been especially challenging, and multiple theoretical scenarios have been proposed to explain their unusual behavior. We present extensive high-resolution photoemission data on a single crystal of PuTe, which has also been proposed as a topological insulator. The new experimental results on this mixed-valent material provide a constraint to the theoretical modeling and new dynamical mean-field theory calculations agree with the experimental results. This paper introduces a new approach to measure the muon magnetic moment anomaly $a_{\mu} = (g-2)/2$, and the muon electric dipole moment (EDM) $d_{\mu}$ at the J-PARC muon facility. The goal of our experiment is to measure $a_{\mu}$ and $d_{\mu}$ using an independent method with a factor of 10 lower muon momentum, and a factor of 20 smaller diameter storage-ring solenoid compared with previous and ongoing muon $g-2$ experiments with unprecedented quality of the storage magnetic field. Additional significant differences from the present experimental method include a factor of 1,000 smaller transverse emittance of the muon beam (reaccelerated thermal muon beam), its efficient vertical injection into the solenoid, and tracking each decay positron from muon decay to obtain its momentum vector. The precision goal for $a_{\mu}$ is statistical uncertainty of 450 part per billion (ppb), similar to the present experimental uncertainty, and a systematic uncertainty less than 70 ppb. We present a detailed nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) study of ${}^{239}$Pu in bulk and powdered single-crystal plutonium tetraboride (PuB$_4$), which has recently been investigated as a potential correlated topological insulator. This study constitutes the second-ever observation of the ${}^{239}$Pu NMR signal, and provides unique on-site sensitivity to the rich $f$-electron physics and insight into the bulk gap-like behavior in PuB$_4$. The ${}^{239}$Pu NMR spectra are consistent with axial symmetry of the shift tensor showing for the first time that ${}^{239}$Pu NMR can be observed in an anisotropic environment and up to room temperature. The temperature dependence of the ${}^{239}$Pu shift, combined with a relatively long spin-lattice relaxation time ($T_1$), indicate that PuB$_4$ adopts a non-magnetic state with gap-like behavior consistent with our density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The temperature dependencies of the NMR Knight shift and $T_1^{-1}$--microscopic quantities sensitive only to bulk states--imply bulk gap-like behavior confirming that PuB$_4$ is a good candidate topological insulator. The large contrast between the ${}^{239}$Pu orbital shifts in the ionic insulator PuO$_2$ ($\sim$~+24.7~\%) and PuB$_4$ ($\sim$~-0.5~\%) provides a new tool to investigate the nature of chemical bonding in plutonium materials., Comment: Accepted to PRB Dec. 14, 2018

Moment methods to reconstruct images from their Radon transforms are both natural and useful. They can be used to suppress noise or other spurious effects and can lead to highly efficient reconstructions from relatively few projections. We establish a modified Radon transform (MRT) via convolution with a mollifier and obtain its inversion formula. The relationship of the moments of the Radon transform and the moments of its modified Radon transform is derived and MRT data is used to provide a uniform approximation to the original density function. The reconstruction algorithm is implemented, and a simple density function is reconstructed from moments of its modified Radon transform. Numerical convergence of this reconstruction is shown to agree with the derived theoretical results.

Muons have been accelerated by using a radio frequency accelerator for the first time. Negative muonium atoms (Mu$^-$), which are bound states of positive muons ($\mu^+$) and two electrons, are generated from $\mu^+$'s through the electron capture process in an aluminum degrader. The generated Mu$^-$'s are initially electrostatically accelerated and injected into a radio frequency quadrupole linac (RFQ). In the RFQ, the Mu$^-$'s are accelerated to 89 keV. The accelerated Mu$^-$'s are identified by momentum measurement and time of flight. This compact muon linac opens the door to various muon accelerator applications including particle physics measurements and the construction of a transmission muon microscope.

Since the invention of the bolometer, its main design principles relied on efficient light absorption into a low-heat-capacity material and its exceptional thermal isolation from the environment. While the reduced thermal coupling to its surroundings allows for an enhanced thermal response, it in turn strongly reduces the thermal time constant and dramatically lowers the detector's bandwidth. With its unique combination of a record small electronic heat capacity and a weak electron-phonon coupling, graphene has emerged as an extreme bolometric medium that allows for both, high sensitivity and high bandwidths. Here, we introduce a hot-electron bolometer based on a novel Johnson noise readout of the electron gas in graphene, which is critically coupled to incident radiation through a photonic nanocavity. This proof-of-concept operates in the telecom spectrum, achieves an enhanced bolometric response at charge neutrality with a noise equivalent power NEP < 5pW/ Sqrt(Hz), a thermal relaxation time of {\tau} < 34ps, an improved light absorption by a factor ~3, and an operation temperature up to T=300K.

Millions of surveillance cameras operate at 24x7 generating huge amount of visual data for processing. However, retrieval of important activities from such a large data can be time consuming. Thus, researchers are working on finding solutions to present hours of visual data in a compressed, but meaningful way. Video synopsis is one of the ways to represent activities using relatively shorter duration clips. So far, two main approaches have been used by researchers to address this problem, namely synopsis by tracking moving objects and synopsis by clustering moving objects. Synopses outputs, mainly depend on tracking, segmenting, and shifting of moving objects temporally as well as spatially. In many situations, tracking fails, thus produces multiple trajectories of the same object. Due to this, the object may appear and disappear multiple times within the same synopsis output, which is misleading. This also leads to discontinuity and often can be confusing to the viewer of the synopsis. In this paper, we present a new approach for generating compressed video synopsis by grouping tracklets of moving objects. Grouping helps to generate a synopsis where chronologically related objects appear together with meaningful spatio-temporal relation. Our proposed method produces continuous, but a less confusing synopses when tested on publicly available dataset videos as well as in-house dataset videos.

In recent interference experiments with an electronic Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI), implemented in the integer quantum Hall effect regime, a flux periodicity of $h/2e$ was observed at bulk fillings $\nu_B>2.5$. The halved periodicity was accompanied by an interfering charge $e^*=2e$, determined by shot noise measurements. Here, we present measurements, demonstrating that, counterintuitively, the coherence and the interference periodicity of the interfering chiral edge channel are solely determined by the coherence and the enclosed flux of the adjacent edge channel. Our results elucidate the important role of the latter and suggest that a neutral chiral edge mode plays a crucial role in the pairing phenomenon. Our findings reveal that the observed pairing of electrons is not a curious isolated phenomenon, but one of many manifestations of unexpected edge physics in the quantum Hall effect regime.

In search of novel, improved materials for magnetic data storage and spintronic devices, compounds that allow a tailoring of magnetic domain shapes and sizes are essential. Good candidates are materials with intrinsic anisotropies or competing interactions, as they are prone to host various domain phases that can be easily and precisely selected by external tuning parameters such as temperature and magnetic field. Here, we utilize vector magnetic fields to visualize directly the magnetic anisotropy in the uniaxial ferromagnet CeRu$_2$Ga$_2$B. We demonstrate a feasible control both globally and locally of domain shapes and sizes by the external field as well as a smooth transition from single stripe to bubble domains, which opens the door to future applications based on magnetic domain tailoring.
