Abstract

Aging affects almost all aspects of an organism -- its morphology, its physiology, its behavior. Isolating which biological mechanisms are regulating these changes, however, has proven difficult, potentially due to our inability to characterize the full repertoire of an animal's behavior across the lifespan. Using data from fruit flies (D. melanogaster) we measure the full repertoire of behaviors as a function of age. We observe a sexually dimorphic pattern of changes in the behavioral repertoire during aging. Although the stereotypy of the behaviors and the complexity of the repertoire overall remains relatively unchanged, we find evidence that the observed alterations in behavior can be explained by changing the fly's overall energy budget, suggesting potential connections between metabolism, aging, and behavior.

21. Creating a Physicist: The Impact of Informal Programs on University Student Development

Abstract

Physics outreach programs provide a critical context for informal experiences that promote the transition from new student to contributing physicist. Prior studies have suggested a positive link between participation in informal physics outreach programs and the development of a student's physics identity. In this study, we adopt a student-focused investigation to explore the effects of informal programs on dimensions of physics identity, sense of community, 21st century skill development, and motivation. We employed a mixed methods study combining a survey instrument (117 responses) and interviews (35) with current and former undergraduate and graduate students who participated in five programs through a physics and astronomy department at a large land-grant university. To examine interviews, we employed a framework based on situated learning theory, transformative learning theory, and the Dynamic Systems Model of Role Identity. Our findings, based on self-reported data, show that students who facilitated informal physics programs positively developed their physics identity, experienced increased sense of belonging to the physics community, and developed 21st century career skills. Specifically, students reported positive benefits to their communication, teamwork and networking, and design skills. The benefits of these programs can be achieved by departments of any size without significant commitment of funds or changes to curriculum., Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

CaseWe report the first documented case of chylous leak recognized intraoperatively during posterior spinal instrumentation and fusion for juvenile scoliosis in a female patient with a history of thoracotomy and decortication for an empyema.ConclusionsThoracic duct injury can lead to severe morbidity and mortality because of chylothorax formation. Although chylous leaks are a well-documented complication of the anterior approach to spine surgery, leaks during the posterior approach are rarely reported. When these chylous leaks are recognized intraoperatively, the likelihood of serious complications may be minimized by drain placement before closure.

38. Computation of effective electrical conductivity of composite materials: a novel approach based on analysis of graphs

Abstract

In this work we continue the investigation of different approaches to conception and modeling of composite materials. The global method we focus on, is called 'stochastic homogenization'. In this approach, the classical deterministic homogenization techniques and procedures are used to compute the macroscopic parameters of a composite starting from its microscopic properties. The stochastic part is due to averaging over some series of samples, and the fact that these samples fit into the concept of RVE (Representative Volume Element) in order to reduce the variance effect. In this article, we present a novel method for computation of effective electric properties of composites -- it is based on the analysis of the connectivity graph (and the respective adjacency matrix) for each sample of a composite material. We describe how this matrix is constructed in order to take into account complex microscopic geometry. We also explain what we mean by homogenization procedure for electrical conductivity, and how the constructed matrix is related to the problem. 45. Influence of morphological parameters in 3D composite materials on their effective thermal properties and comparison with effective mechanical properties

Abstract

In this paper we study the effective thermal behaviour of 3D representative volume elements (RVEs) of two-phased composite materials constituted by a matrix with cylindrical and spherical inclusions distributed randomly, with periodic boundaries. Variations around the shape of inclusions have been taken into account, by corrugating shapes, excavating and/or by removing pieces of inclusions. The effective behaviour is computed with the help of homogenization process based on an accelerated FFT-scheme giving the thermal conductivity tensor. Several morphological parameters are also taken into account for instance the number and the volume fraction of each type of inclusions,... in order to analyse the behaviour of the composite for a large number of geometries. We compare the results obtained for RVEs with and without variations, and then with the mechanical results of such composite studied in our previous paper., Comment: 27 pages, 14 figures
